I went to google about it, and found it on Pinterest, and his weapons make much more sense for a spider-climbing ability: br.pinterest.com/pin/68257750576104254/
I like how the bosses in this game are a mix of the more obscure TMNT enemies from the '87 cartoon and the comics. It gives it a nice breath of fresh air so to speak from the villains that would normally be used. The TMNT would get another "Metroidvania" years later with TMNT Danger Of The Ooze from Activision & developer Wayforward based on the 2K12 series.
Dirtbag also was a boss in TMNT3: The Manhattan Project on the Nes. Radical Rescue sounds interesting...but sweet mother of Obelisk, Osiris, and Ra, THOSE MAPS ARE HUGE!! And didn't this come out before Metroid 2?
Another name for the "metroidvania" genre that I've seen used by one developer is "search action" game. I've only seen it used the one time, but I quite like it. I see a few mentions of other people liking this term as well, via a web search. I don't mind the term "metroidvania" myself, but if you're looking for an alternative, I recommend it.
Yes please. Also there is so many different things in all those games any way that the excuse that such a broad blanket statement needs to be used to describe a game to ppl is just bs
I have first played this game on a knock off cartridge with 50 games from a friend. This game though the best turtles for the GB system was also had the flaw of being really difficult as well! If you didn't had a pizza on your inventory, and knew the pattern good for each boss you were as good as gone.I have the pleasure of beating this originally on the handheld with great effort like the nes first turtles game. But from the first nes turtles this is much better developed as a game i believe.Speaking about the first nes game that game also shared a similar style close to a metroidvania, not exactly metroidvania but you know where this is going.
Another Metroidvania style Ninja Turtles game, one I’ve actually played is Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles Danger of the Ooz which is available on PS3 and Xbox 360 (I believe on 3DS as well). Also, speaking of underrated handheld games with similar mechanics where you unlocked characters with unique abilities that help you unlock areas, you might wanna check out GG Shinobi 2 on the Game Gear, you’ve already covered a Shinobi game so maybe give the GG ones the proper exposure they deserve.
Great coverage on an overlooked Gem! 💎 Never got to play this at the time because I never had a Game Boy! Now I gotta get a copy to add to my ever growing TMNT Collection! Also, I look forward to seeing your wifes video on the PSX Console Wars! Should be AWESOME!
4:50 would Dragon Buster also be considered a "metroidvania" that predates both games? it seems like a good example. maybe nintendo and konami got inspired by it.
Ah yes, I remember how fascinated I was by this game when it first came out. I even tried to draw up designs for a similar game on the SNES, to take advantage of the greater capabilities of said system. I had forgotten this game, but I hope that this video not only reminds me of this classic, but also inspires some home game maker to create a new version or inspiration from this game.
That last gauntlet leading up to Shredder is hard as hell! Also I think Goonies II was the first Konami Metroidvania-style game, I believe it came before Castlevania 2!
This was a personal favorite of mine in my childhood & I was devastated when it got stolen with my Gameboy in college. Glad I got to re-experience the game thanks to the Cowabunga Collection.
They need to remake this game, but they should add a new area (like SOTN's inverted castle); however, the new area should be the Technodrome. Like SOTN's inverted castle, the new Technodrome area would be completely open to explore. Maybe the Turtles have to destroy the Technodrome's power generators to win. Along the way, the Turtles could find new powerups and/or characters.
Well, you're right! I never knew Turtles 3 for the GB was this kind of game ^^ It reminds me a lot of the GG Shinobi games, where you also had to save other ninjas (4 of them this time), and their abilities would unlock new parts of levels, and finding all ninjas and special items would unlock the final level. It wasn't as maze like as Turtles 3, but the ninja powers gimmick was pretty similar =)
Honestly, I have never heard about this one. But definitely agree it was a missed opportunity for its concepts not being used on console, vs a handheld. Neat idea, and exploration. TurtleVania. Would be awesome if a new game took a chance to create an adventure like this.
That PS3 game from a few years ago from Wayforward is also like this and other Metroidvanias. Danger of the Ooze I think it's called, and also on the 3DS.
I had Fall of the Foot Clan back in the day. Did not play the second game on Game Boy, and When this one came out, I ignored it, since the name sounded too kiddie for me at the time. But seeing this video has made me think about giving this one a go. Sounds quite fun!
Can someone say what version of Symphony of the Night is shown, as the PS4-version doesn't look like that on my TV. ☹️ It's pixelated, not heavely but noticable (enough). 😕
I did try this game a few years back. i wasn't really into metroidvanias so i didn't finish it. I do remember where i left though so i can probably go back to it and finish it.
So many people who had Mario ot Tetris or something as their starting game. This was mine. And I've played it for hours and hours upon end. And I only recently picked it up and finished it. Still one of my favorite games ever. Highly recommend it.
It was power rangers, they pulled the turtles audience away. While I liked power rangers at the time, they didn’t replace tmnt for me like most kids and I still love tmnt today. I can remember looking for new toys when playmates continued to make them for a few years after the show was relegated to a b slot on fox kids and picking up mutating tokka and the mini mutant sets which were the best.
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is my favorite game I play this game I was young kid and older age 43 I still play these great and greatest video games that I ever played I still need to see more new teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game video play u tube
These videos have made me want to hunt down all the GB TMNT games. I loved the NES, SNES and Genesis beat em ups but for some reason, despite being a big TMNT fan, and owning a Gameboy, I never had an interest in the handheld titles.
Despite of Symphony popularity, I'll never say "Metroidvania games". Symphony borrowed from metroid, so the correct term should be "Metroid like games", including Symphony. To call it "Metroidvania", implies that Symphony and Metroid are the birth of the genre, and it's simply not true.
That box art, though. Why does it look like a Wacky Packs parody version of the Turtles? Why is Leonardo melting while having 'roid rage at the same time?
i didnt know this game was like a metroidvania! i thought it wasyour typical gameboy plaformer... wow.. they need to definietly make a new version of this. kinda like rescuepalooza..but more metroidvania style..that would be amazing
I would love to hear more thoughts from you similar to your dislike of the "Metroidvania" which I also dislike. I'm not a Patron, but would you consider a list of "great" or "favorite" precursors to "Symphony of the Night"??? Great point that Castlevania is mostly level-based.
Omg, I can't believe I never heard of this one. It looks so awesome! If it had a game boy color tune up, that would've been nice. Regardless, this looks like it would be one of my favorite games on the platform.
yeah, bought this back in the day, it was fine at best, not what i would call a classic, i remember the boss guantlet at the ends, was not a fan of this, but it had really good graphics, but i don't know, didn't really feel it that much .......

When you said Rembrandt, I thought the game introduced a fifth turtle!
I went to google about it, and found it on Pinterest, and his weapons make much more sense for a spider-climbing ability:

That actually made laugh harder than I should've. Caught me off guard lol.
That Donatello
I've rewinded a few times to confirm what he said.
Yeah this surprised me also. Not sure where Rembrandt makes any other appearance other than this game.
This game foreshadowed Mikey as The Last Ronin years ago.
If the next issue has him helicoptering into battle I wouldnt complain lol

Dirtbag also was a boss in TMNT3: The Manhattan Project on the Nes.
Radical Rescue sounds interesting...but sweet mother of Obelisk, Osiris, and Ra, THOSE MAPS ARE HUGE!! And didn't this come out before Metroid 2?
After Metroid 2. This was pretty late into the Game Boy's lifecycle I think. I wanna say late 1993 or early 1994.
@@BB-te8tc Ahhh, okay. Thanks for that info.
NES Turtles 3: has Triceraton on the cover
Game Boy Turtles 3: has Triceraton in the game

Nice to see this game finally get some attention from a big channel
I’m sorry, Rembrandt?
He meant donnie
@@avalond1193 He meant it as a joke.

I was just about to say this bro wow
Loved this on the GB. "BIG DADDY TOP-HAT GAMING HERE!"
Finally somebody gave this underrated classic some love.

I got this game with my Gameboy for Christmas and loved it to death. Absolute gem of a game on the Gameboy.
That last gauntlet leading up to Shredder is hard as hell! Also I think Goonies II was the first Konami Metroidvania-style game, I believe it came before Castlevania 2!
Do a vid on why they need to get rid of the word metroidvania. And how it's just concepts and mechanics from many different games.
My god man, between this and the 2007 tmnt gba game, I may need to splurge so I can re-live my childhood because of your videos
This was a personal favorite of mine in my childhood & I was devastated when it got stolen with my Gameboy in college. Glad I got to re-experience the game thanks to the Cowabunga Collection.
Dive deep into the Battle Nexus games from the GBA.

I'm now even more upset we don't have any Turtles games on the Virtual Console.
Fun fact some of the guys who made this tmnt game boy game went on to make Castlevania SOTN which started the metroidvania
I was waiting for you to cover this game. One of my favorites from the OG GB.
Favourite tortoise: Still Rembrandt
Keep up the good work fella and stay safe!
I'm not going to lie this is my favorite one of the game boy series. I don't know why, but because of the Metroid playstyle, I just loved it

I had the first 2 gb tmnt games this one flew under my radar cheers I’ll have to track this down

I view turtles 3 on gameboy as a real sequel to tmnt 1 on nes where its allow exploration instead of just a linear beat em up
Man this was cool hope you do the TMNT 03 GBA games

I hope like hell that when you get to Out of the Shadows from 2013 you recognize it as the rightful holder of the title “Best TMNT Game of All Time”.
That PS3 game from a few years ago from Wayforward is also like this and other Metroidvanias. Danger of the Ooze I think it's called, and also on the 3DS.
Also on the 360.
This TMNT game looks to bad ass! ~_~ Imagine a follow up on the snes.
Best metroidvania gameboy game!
Definitely underrated, but I think its because people had about had their fill of the franchise at that point.
Top hat gaming man is the best
go ninja go ninja go
I loved the background music in this game! Amazing soundtracking!
And y’all are going to stop disrespecting the trilogy movie. 🤣

Tournament Fighters for the NES is pretty damn decent for a two button fighting game
Rembrandt? You mean Picasso. It's been a long time since I've watched the show but I'm pretty sure it was Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo and Picasso.
That game is quality!!!!!!!! I remember it.
Very awesome review!

This game deserves a rerelease and remaster
Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles is my favorite game I play this game I was young kid and older age 43 I still play these great and greatest video games that I ever played I still need to see more new teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles game video play u tube
This game could have really gotten a benefit from better SGB support.
Now Konami needs to give us remasters of the first three Metal Gear Solid games on the Switch! Those would sell like hotcakes if they did!
I knew of this game, but not nearly this much detail! Now I must get a copy to play on my gba sp!
Leonardo looks like he's seen some shit on that boxart
This was my favorite game on gameboy followed by Batman Return of the Joker
This game is more like Hebereke (U-Four-ia) for the NES rather then the traditional "Metroidvania" games.
Thanks to the Cowabunga Collection I discovered it. ❤️
Cowabunga dudes! I love the TMNT's GB games
I love this Game. I‘d wish we‘d get more turtle games like this
Be careful what you wish for; TMNT Danger of the Ooze

I'd like to see you play those Nintendo 3DS wayforward Turtles games
Splendid job as always old chap! I just wanna point out that turtles are REPTILES, not amphibians. The BATTLETOADS are AMPHIBIANS
Never knew about this one. I gotta play it now!!
"Radical Rescue" such an apt name
That PowerPack in the intro mmmmmmm
Ninja turtles on the PS4 is amazing game
Play the Japanese version guys. It has unlimited continues and much helpful map.

Is there some sort of ongoing joke I don't know about where he calls Donatello Rembrandt
Might have to try that turtles Gameboy game it looks like a really good Willy Minor game.
You can hate konami but at least they put out a collection so we can enjoy the games we passed on.

I always hated the boss rush at the end of the game!
But it was a great turtle game
Had this been released on the Sega Game Gear, it would have a top title on that platform, known by everyone.
As a kid i liked part 2 the best (Gameboy) but part 3 is by far the best Gameboy TMNT game....3 > 2 > 1
Rembrandt?!! LMAO..I wonder how many folks in the comments caught that?👊💥👍☢️
Mostly just those without a sense of humor.
Who is Rembrandt shouldn't it be donatello
