  • This explains the basics of how to run the ignition and chargin system wiring for automotive (and other) projects.
    Please note: Months later I looked at his and found a small error. The "ground" wire from the coil should have run from the coil to the green wire on the distributor. A link to a 69 beetle wiring diagram. www.jbugs.com/VW-Tech-Article...

    I'm going to be wiring an old hotrod, I thought I had it correct in my head and this verified it. Thanks for taking the time to make this video. Very helpful!

    Dr. Clueless here, THANKS, about to buy a LONG sitting dune buggy rail, and just want to get it running to pull my pull behind grass cutter on my farm, THIS may get me up and running.

      There are two starter solenoids you don't need the external solenoid here.

    Very good. Just want to clarify that the coil is not a capacitor. It is a transformer. It boosts 12V to 30kV or more. It is always doing that while the ignition is on. The distributor "distributes" that 30kV to each spark plug when that cylinder is at TDC of the firing stroke.

    • @Reloadinggeargmailcom
      @Reloadinggeargmailcom 3 роки тому +1

      Doesn’t really matter what it is if it’s wired as shown in the video, as there will be nothing for the distributor to distribute.

    • @LeadfootOnline
      @LeadfootOnline  3 роки тому

      @@Reloadinggeargmailcom You are correct. The "ground" wire from the coil should be going to the green wire on the distributor (points and condenser). This is why I expressed so hard to double check my work. www.jbugs.com/VW-Tech-Article-1968-69-Wiring.html

    For anybody using a remote starter solenoid as seen in the video, there are a few types available and not all get wired the same way so be sure you know what you have before connecting any power wires. The large post are the same on all types, when the solenoid is energized there will be continuity between the large post. One side goes to the battery positive and the other side goes to the starter. Polarity does not matter through the large post. The difference between the types of solenoids are in the little post. Some solenoids will only have 3 post. Two large and a small. This type uses the body of the solenoid as the ground path. You only need to connect a single wire from the ignition switch START position to the small post. When the key is in the start position it will energize the coil and close the internal contacts between the two large post. The second type has 4 post, two large and two small post. One of the small post will be labeled with the letter “I”. This style was used for vehicles with ballast resistors in the ignition circuit. Engines with points distributors anD early electronic ignition used this type. The ignition switch START position is wired to the small S terminal and the solenoid body provides the ground path. The “I” terminal will have battery voltage on it during cranking only. A wire is routed from the I terminal to coil positive. This bypassed the ballast resistor in the ignition circuit to provide the coil with full 12 volts during cranking. When the key is released after the engine has started, the “I” terminal will no longer have power. The last type also has 4 post. Two large and two small and as described in the video, a wire from the START side of the ignition switch will be routed to one of the small post, the other small post will be routed to ground. I hope this clarifies the start circuit. I think this next topic was addressed in the comments already but the negative side of the coil goes to the distributor, through the points to ground. When the points open the ignition circuit opens. This causes the field within the coil to collapse and the energy is released to ground through the spark plug. When the points close, the circuit is closed, the coil primary is again energized

    Could you wire the switch to the solenoid and then to the battery?

    Would you be able to point me in the direction of a website or some info on the best engine and transmission layout for sand rails/ baja vehicles? I want to design my own but I'd prefer to know the best possible configuration to go with, I want to build the chassis/frame around it.

    • @LeadfootOnline
      @LeadfootOnline  5 років тому

      I don't knoiw of any websites but I can tell you a few things. Naturally VW engine+transaxle, you can also attach many other engines to a vw transaxle with adapters. BUT.. in these modern times, pretty much anything front wheel drive could be used as a rear axle. If I were to look into something more modern, I'd look for something that used a subaru engine. Even using a street bike engine makes for a pretty peppy sandrail these days.

    Negative side of coil goes to the distributor not to ground.

  • @curiouscarly1148
    @curiouscarly1148 3 роки тому

    That negative from the coil goes to the points and condenser?...in the distributor?...and the hot stays hot for the engine to run?..and the switch stays on until you want the engine to stop 🛑?

      I believe the answer is yes to all of them. Take a look at this wiring diagram for 68-69 beetle. www.jbugs.com/VW-Tech-Article-1968-69-Wiring.html
