  • So out of all the brand name intake and custom intake options for the H2 Hummer, there is not a snorkel kit available. So today we begin mocking up a custom snorkel intake for the H2.

Nice!!! I can't believe you can see the hvac fan from that opening!!! Not sure I'm ready to cut in to my H2 just yet! Currently my mod that I'm doing is a winch bumper....a Brand New Boulder Accessories winch bumper!!!😈 someone had it sitting on the shelf and never installed it. Hopefully I'll have it put together this weekend.

That sounds awesome! I definitely need to do bumpers soon, don't wanna do all this work and let a a rogue deer ruin it all 🤣

Great video Tony! I want to put one on my H2 as well, but was wondering if one of the ready made Snorkels designed for other SUVs could be fitted with a lot less work, since most of them end up with the air intake in the same area under the fender as the H2. Did you check out any of those other ready made snorkels if any of them might work before you did that major cut job for yours? Most of the commercial ones also have the snorkel right against the windshield so they do not obstruct the vision much. I own an original M998 Military "H-1" HMMWV with the issue snorkel in the same location as your project, so know what inspired yours. So have you finished it yet?

      Hey Dan, thanks for watching!
So I did do extensive research, talked to other owners who have done similar intakes, and unfortunately there's no way to make any commerical unit work properly without extensive modifications as well - the popular ones that exit through the fenders such as on Tacoma's and 4Runners won't work as that section on the H2 is part of the hood, and the space in between where the current intake sits is far too narrow to fit anything. Hardly enough room for proper airflow actually.
The only real option which will not bottleneck the intake with a very small diameter is to do as I've done here - hence why there's no commerical kits available for the H2, there's just not many options on how to run it, and none that would be "bolt on".
Funny you should comment today about finishing it - I actually just ordered the last piece I need to get this bolted on. I've been busy converting the interior into a mini RV for overlanding, so this project took a slight backseat. But the last pipe I need will be here Wednesday - everything should bolt up pretty quickly, I'll make a handful of brackets to hold it securely and then drop it all off for powdercoating. So I'd guess the end of next week I may have it all bolted together and done, so a video will follow shortly after that.
I appreciate the insight and questions, I'm definitely not the professional and one may chime in with a better solution than mine, but this is what looks like will work best to me! There are some others I've seen with their snorkel directly centered on the plastic cap, but those are so narrow, around 2 inches, that I can't imagine it's the "best" solution, albeit it is aesthetically better than what I will have to end up doing, which is placing the pipe on the far right of the plastic cap.
When it's said and done, if you'd like to do something similar I am always happy to chat and send over my part numbers for everything!

@@TonyMaples Hey Tony, I have now built and installed what I believe is a functional snorkel/supplementary air intake, by buying an $80.00 Toyota Landcruiser snorkel off of eBay, cut it down to fit into the driver side plastic vent cover of my 2003 H2, and with a little bit of interior hole drilling and sealing, forces air into to same metal channel that the normal air intake comes in under the hood and into the air filter. This simple mod doesn't modify the exterior body at all except for the one cheap plastic vent cover and definitely brings MUCH more air into the air filter, and on the rare occasion I might need to use it as a true snorkel, I simply have to take about two minutes to duct tape the the stock air intake ducts under the side of the hood shut. The whole thing was completed on a weekend and looks like it is an OEM part --- as good as the ones actually made for the H3! . I am curious to see what you think and if I may have overlooked something. If there is any way this could hurt the vehicle's operation, it can be restored to its original condition in a matter of minutes, and the purchase of just a new plastic vent cover and reopening the sealed areas.. I have never made a UA-cam video before to show this, but could post images somewhere for you to see, like if you are a member of one of the Hummer Facebook groups, or someplace similar.

@@danpeterson114 hey Dan! Sounds like you found a great solution for what you need 🤙🏼
If the truck starts properly and accelerates at WOT as normal, you haven't caused any issues 😎
Id definitely love to see it! If you have an Instagram you can send me a DM @tonymaples.
I've been slacking on videos lately, the camper conversion I've been working on has been taking all my time, but I have about an hour of filming left to do to finish up my completed snorkel video. I should have it posted next week, and then I'll have a video on my extensive camper build I've been doing to the H2 the past few months.
