To explain the seemingly pointless locations in parts of this game, Humongous Entertainment games were known to be sort of rogue-lite adventures. In this game, if I recall, the locations of the golden pipes and the culprit of the whole mystery could all change for each playthrough!
@@Trishpaytaxes It's random, decided from the start. This was an era without much in the way of free games online, and games didn't cost much less despite your dollar being worth much more. So your average kid would end up playing most of thier games over and over. So Humongus got the idea of making multiple potential spawns for items and collectibles, and depending on the game they might change your cultprit or neccessary sidequests. So the kid would still be able to explore this world a few times through while keeping it fresh! Great if you were like me and only got a few new games per year.
“Geeeee, that fish looks like it’s really hungry for those _kelp vines_.“ “I sure wouldn’t want to get my tail caught in that clam’s sharp, *scissor-like* jaws.”
So the Humongous Entertainment games, with maybe one or two exceptions, are notorious for having alternate paths and solutions for different playthroughs. Using this game as an example, the next you'd play, the golden pipes will be hidden in different places with different solutions to get them. As a result, some areas are irrelevant for certain playthroughs
@@WriteWrongsNot all that complicated, technically, but it's great that they put so much love and care into making something kids could replay and have different experiences with (in computer class and stuff).

I got the cd-rom for this out of a cereal box, and I remember playing it so many times that eventually the game ran out of puzzle patterns to throw at me
The building with the pipe organ is a fish. A living fish, going by his eyes moving when you exit. And when you're inside him, you can see the gut cilia that make up the carpet, and the left entrance is a giant fucking goatse anus. It only took me 25 years to see that. Thanks GameGrumps.
My favourite thing about this game is that who did it changed every time you played it as well as where the urchins and pipes were, which is why there was art style difference in that panel on the plane, sometimes a pipe is locked in there
The really odd thing about the premise of this game world is most sea life gets to be sentient, except for the sea urchins, which is instead of being sentient, is currency instead. Maybe sentient currency?
I did not know that there were more games than 1 Freddi Fish. I had the 1st one when I was young (Freddi Fish and the Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds) and I remember how much I loved it. Since my niece has a daughter now (she's 4 years old), I might look into getting them all and play them with her. As I'm her godmother (and I unfortunately struggle with kids), it could be a bonding experience.
