“There’s a part of me that low key wants to somebody who sings country cover this”. Way to predict the future and the whirlwind renewed success of this song as covered by Luke Combs in 2023! I just watched their Grammy performance and I was crying.
Yes, this is incredible - and he saw it years ago! When this came out I noticed a white friend of mine liked it and I saw it had this resonance that I didn’t expect. Luke Combs felt it as well; it was great to see Tracy reach a new audience. Country and soul are part of one American music spectrum.
And she lost the Grammy for song of the year to a song a five year old could have written..Don't worry be happy. That was when I stopped watching the Grammys. What a joke.
I remember when this first came out...completely unpretentious, humble, and honest storytelling through song. She had another big hit with "Give Me One Reason." Tremendous talent.
She went to the new city across the border with her father didnt she? But he kept drinking at the new city aswell so I think the morale of the story is that you cant run away from ur problems? Sorry for bed english
Its possible. I'm 28, and until a year ago I was only familiar with the riff. I listen to mostly rock and hiphop when I was younger, so whenever something like this is on the radio, I just switch the station. I only listened and realized this was something amazing because someone special sent it to me. And with streaming nowadays catering to your taste, sometimes its even harder to find something outside of your taste.
Girl I didn’t listen to the Beatles until I was 15, plus I didn’t listen to biggie until this year and I’m 23. People miss things, america has a lot of pop culture, being happy that someone is experiencing Tracy Chapman’s beautiful song fast car for the first time is way more fun than being a bitter Betty ✌🏻
it was the time of chapman, lisa loeb, eddi brickel, kate bush, suzanne vega, alanis morrisette, avril lavigne, tori amos, fiona apple and and and... and today we have to listen to no voice bitches like gaga, swift, grande, gomez or cyrus... what a shame...
Tenitri it’s not her situation, the story is fictional, she made a song that others could relate to and to keep that positivity while constantly seeking for better regardless if things don’t turn out better according to the plan you have for your life, but to get in the car and keep going because the only happiness is the pursuit of a new start.
In all the years that I've known about this song, I never paid attention to the lyrics. They're very sad and I completely regret having been so dismissive for so long. This is a really beautiful song.
same.. it's strange, even long before I knew my father would become an alcoholic and die from it the lines about her father really touched and resonated with me.
it gets like that sometimes hu? growing up i was into drum n bass, hip hop, metal, grunge, all pretty hard hitting stuff. at some point i went back as an adult and really listened to all the music my parents used to play when i was a kid, stevie wonder, pink floyd, tracey chapman, i cant lie it all moved me.
@10 27 There is a difference between folk and blues. Not a massive difference, but a difference. I had a large selection of black blues artists via several box sets (Chess and Atlantic) and individual artist CDs, but only Chapman and Leadbelly for folk. Two extremely different eras.
When she first broke on the scene, we all fell in love with her heart instantly. There used to be some wonderful footage of her still in college playing guitar as an unknown on the steps outside.
Love how the last lyric is "You've gotta make a decision... leave tonight or we can die this way" Then the last part of the riff doesn't complete at the end, like the question is left hanging in the air.
Nice choice! Tracy Chapman is an underrated talent. Unique voice and great writing. Oh and yeah that's her playing the guitar. I believe she was discovered singing on a street corner. Probably why she's so real. She has plenty of good tracks. Try "Talkin' about a Revolution", one of my favs. Bravo...
She wasn’t discovered on street corners. She was playing in bars and gigs like that while in college. In college she met the son of a record executive. Couple years after college that record executive and ended up signing her to record deal. So it was actually the son of the record executive that got her the intro into the record business through his father.
even non english speaking people knew this song when it came out..............either some people just live in a bubble filled with only 1 type of music, or they lying.
Robert Rijkers pfffttt it’s the story of my life, It’s not that sad, once you realize half the issues are outside of your control what can you really do? Sometimes I believe folks are just dealt a shitty hand and no matter how much you shuffle the deck and hope for change negativity follows and they’re dealt the same shitty cards.
Fun fact: She wanted to be a Veterinarian, but chose music. I used to work at a vet hospital in SF, she used to take her dogs there. She only gets rescues and she loves them so much. Hella down to earth and real.
This song helped me when I was younger and it still does even now. It's a song with an emotion to it that stays relevant throughout time, imo. Kind of like "Cats in the Cradle".
Dude I first heard this song back in high school 20 years ago. Just what you said-goosebumps. Still hits me the same way every time! Beautiful song and so simple. I get on the verge of tearing up every time. Thanks for this one ✌🏼
The vocal timing, extreme pain over a sweet tune, it changed the way I listened to music when I was a kid hearing this for the first time and still hits deep after all these years. Timeless classic!
Great song. Fun fact The movie studio tried to pull the plug on the Malcolm X movie and Tracy chapman gave like a quarter million of her own money to finish the movie.
This song is so powerful...one of the most ever. I find myself singing it and thinking about its theme all the time. Why a fast car? Because you need power, speed to blast out of a lifetime, an intergenerational rut of patterns, out of what you’ve been told, taught, out of the grip of everything that is going to try to pull you back to earth, the life you’ve known. I get the image of a rocket blast, the sheer energy it takes to overcome the earth’s gravity, the hold of the atmosphere. In this song it takes as much courage and faith for her to “get out”.
What I like most is how your face lights up when you realize how amazing the shit you're watchin is. And I gotta say, you're pretty fast in realizing it. Faster than me, anyways. I first heard this song 30 yrs ago and it still kicks like a mule.
Gorgeous song, Tracy touched our souls with this one. So happy you found it and brought it back for us to enjoy all over again. A song like this should never be forgotten💜🙏💜. Yep, I’m 😢
That was one of very cool thing about the 80's and early 90's. Many, many one hit wonders.. This sound crossed music genres back in the day.. Rockers, rappers, techie, Pop, and even some goths would play this sound... That says tons
oh yes! tracy is amazingly talented...tho as a kid, i thought she was a man ( i only heard the songs on the radio and did't know a woman could have such a deep voice...forgive a 5-6 year old me, lol)
Yes! I’ve recommended The Joke to so many people now, and almost no one reviews it. Her vocals are powerhouse while having the lyricism of a great folk artist.

Tracy is wonderful, I have been a fan of hers for a long time, her voice is just so unique, songwriter skills she has is unbelievable. Please do more reaction because she has so many great songs with that beautiful voice.
you shoulda watched her live performance of this song in Wembley Stadium. just a humble girl and her guitar captivating a sea of people with her music. i love her
I can relate to this song, My father was a chronic alcoholic, I had to leave my little home town, I couldn't be around him anymore. When I hear this song I do get misty eyed.
Great channel man - I've been following you for about a year. I'm a fan of almost all kinds of music. I love how you can appreciate things about all kinds of genres.
I LOVE this song.. It's hard to believe that this song came out in 1988. This is one of my absolute favorite songs. Thank you for putting up the lyrics, I appreciate that.
Nice and Smooth sampled this beat for the song "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow". So when you get a chance please do Nice and Smooth "Sometimes I Rhyme Slow" Its an old school HIPHOP classic.I think I asked you to do it many moon's ago
What amazes me about this song is - everything! The key she sings this song in just emphasizes the yearning and the sadness that overlies it. The best part of it is that she stops counting on anyone else but herself. I get the feeling she will succeed in her life because she has the desire to live better.

Ha. So true and it happened.
Right, I cried too.
Same!! I remember watching this when it came out! It happened! Tracy is a legend 🙏
Guy just nailed it
I love the way she subtly changes the lyrics from "we" to "you" in the lyrics.
Amen
Life's patterns roll on
instablaster.
You are absolutely right. I thought I was the only one who caught that.
She went from being a caregiver of one simply to repeat. Yes caught.
We used to have artists, now we have entertainers.
I will agree to that this is one of the best songs ever written. An entire life compressed into some verses. Tracy just absolutely nailed it.
And she lost the Grammy for song of the year to a song a five year old could have written..Don't worry be happy. That was when I stopped watching the Grammys. What a joke.
I remember when this first came out...completely unpretentious, humble, and honest storytelling through song. She had another big hit with "Give Me One Reason." Tremendous talent.
and "baby can i hold you"
Her best song is the promise, gives me goosebumps every time I hear it.
I liked "You're the One" too. She has lots of good music.
"Revolution" was also a big hit of that first album
Listen to this whole Album Fast Cars.
Every song is brilliant, for me especially mountains o things and Across the lines.
The morale of the song was that history repeats itself. She met a man who became her father.
Exactly what it is, its timeless, it will continue this way for aslong as humans exist
She went to the new city across the border with her father didnt she? But he kept drinking at the new city aswell so I think the morale of the story is that you cant run away from ur problems? Sorry for bed english
Or did she become her mom? Or both?
@@Exstas1 no she left with her boyfriend
Tracy Chapman lesbian I'm going to say she met a woman that was exactly like her dad not a man she's lesbian
I can hear both pain and hope in her voice simultaneously. Exquisite. So honest.
Even if they don't get things accomplished, we are all someone.
How can anybody have lived a life long enough to grow a beard, and not have heard "Fast Car" by Tracy Chapman??
I don't understand it either I mean just listen to the way he talks! I could never be friends with somebody like that! LMFAO 😂
What fukin rock has he been livin under????

@Cindy Thompson ok boomer
Tracy Chapman is truly wonderful, she is real. Not that fake real that's so common, the real fucking deal.
it was the time of chapman, lisa loeb, eddi brickel, kate bush, suzanne vega, alanis morrisette, avril lavigne, tori amos, fiona apple and and and... and today we have to listen to no voice bitches like gaga, swift, grande, gomez or cyrus... what a shame...
It's not a happy song brother. I can hardly ever not cry when I hear this song.
He needs some Zakk Wylde reaction.. Angel of Mercy!.
I openly weep when I hear this song !
@@ryanagee5540 the whole cd is great and for me one of the best ever...
She captures the sadness and hopelessness of her situation so perfectly. There are very few songs that affect me as much as this one. It’s beautiful
Tenitri it’s not her situation, the story is fictional, she made a song that others could relate to and to keep that positivity while constantly seeking for better regardless if things don’t turn out better according to the plan you have for your life, but to get in the car and keep going because the only happiness is the pursuit of a new start.

As a metalhead in the 80s/90s, I don't think I have ever heard this song and not cried
Tracy Chapman is fantastic and a rare black folk singer.
She literally took the music industry by storm. They weren't ready for her
@10 27 There is a difference between folk and blues. Not a massive difference, but a difference. I had a large selection of black blues artists via several box sets (Chess and Atlantic) and individual artist CDs, but only Chapman and Leadbelly for folk. Two extremely different eras.

Oh I love Tracy Chapman! You should react to her song "Give Me One Reason"
Give me one reason is so powerful. Preston this is a must react bro. Thank us later
I love that song I love all of this time she's an amazing singer songwriter
She has a version of this she did with Eric Clapton... Amazing!
That's a great example of a 12 bar blues song...... one of my favorites
Margaret is right. This is another Chapman classic.
This song is perfection. And it's completely timeless. Thank you x million Tracy Chapman for this masterpiece.

Fast Car and If Not Now... are on my all time playlist. "If Not Now" she has amazing flexion in her voice.
I don't thinks she's underrated, her name is eponymous of talent, back then, she sold a lot of records and earned a lot of recognition.
Dude, how can someone that loves music never have heard these famous songs 🤣
By pretending like you haven't so people are more likely to watch your 0 effort videos and make the free money flow.
