I'm always blown away by the amount of obscure games from the late 90s/early 00s I had never heard of until you cover them, that seem like I'd be totally into them.
Even during the golden years of horror games, there are a lot of obscure or lesser-known titles, with some becoming it's own series. Galerians, D & D2, Eternal Darkness, Nightmare Creatures, Alisa, the Parasite Eve trilogy, the Dino Crisis duology, Alone in the Dark(the game who pioneers survival horror next to the late-80s' Sweet Home), and Koudelka/Shadow Hearts are painfully underrated. The former and latter have the main protagonist either become a metaphorical or literal monster, either for evil or good. Rion kills and maims people with his psychic powers for no apparent reason just to act heroic(the same thing applies to Spec Ops The Line, one of the most disturbing games ever released, and aged well considering what's going on recently in the Middle East), whereas Yuri Hyuga takes the form of grotesque monsters he kills, but only on one condition: they cost his senses by Shadow Hearts' very own Sanity Meter(compared to Eternal Darkness' equivalent where the game messes with the player, to the point where it enters mindfuck territory. The bathtub jumpscare and corrupted save-file Sanity Effects speak for themselves). The ending to Galerians makes it a lot scarier since the game's protagonist Rion is in fact a teenager before the change of voice during puberty, and witnessed fucked up shit through philosophical themes, watching people continue to suffer without a breather. Also, the box art reading "50 Hours"? Probably a translation error, but at least Galerians 2's main character looks cool, almost like Tetsuya Nomura designed Raiden from Metal Gear. However the sequel's hot garbage unlike the original, so survival horror fans should give Galerians a go.
I was thinking about Shadow Hearts' sanity meter and the Malice system throughout this too. For those who don't know, the more monsters you kill, the higher the malice rises and it changes the color of the stone in Yuri's necklace. When the stone turns red, the reaper shows up and it's very dangerous. The malice can be cleansed in the graveyard of Yuri's soul accessed via save point.

Still miss the shop after I moved, had an amazing collection of every kind of game, to include old PC titles. I never did beat the game, as I had rented it back then, solely based on the jewelcase and description. I do recall it being quite a challenge though, and now's a good as any time to go back and finish it!
Oh my childhood! I got this game as a gift in my little pink easter basket as a kid lol My dad really was just buying random games without really looking into it.
I played this game a lot as a teen. New-game plus allows you to RUN while you short, which makes it a breeze. However, you really have to put in the work first. This game rewards gamers who are quick, efficient, and pre-plan accordingly. All of this can only come from knowing where important items are and what rooms host enemies, what fights you can avoid altogether, being strategic with your Shorting, and getting accustomed to your charge-up time/distance. I used to zip along the rooms I knew were empty to gather supplies first. Because I knew inventory was limited I would leave specific items behind and later return once I cleared the area (you can always go back to get any items you missed in that section, so long as you do it BEFORE you trigger the boss fight). By the time I explored and gathered supplies, I knew I'd be close to Shorting. By then, I'd return to any rooms with enemies I needed to enter and lay out the pain to clear my way. The game provides you with just enough delmetor to carry you over into that whole section, so if you are fast enough to go through that area, you'll be using that delmetor right before a boss fight. Lastly, don't bother with D-Felon - it's a waste of space. It's just better to clear the way than having to toss enemies aside with little damage done to them and unnecessarily speeding up your AP. The game provides you with TONS of Red and Nalcon to clear out areas with more than enough to spare before an upcoming boss battle. While it does take a moment for them to charge, you'll naturally know how much time and distance you need to charge up as you're playing this game. In close-compact spaces (like in the hotel), it's also just better to run-in and get-out quick instead of fighting. Again, learning the lay-out, enemies, items beforehand really helps.
I somehow love this game ! It was the best idea to make a character as strong as tetsuo with his psychic abilities but still very fragile and depended on drugs to get your powers possible to use or even upgrade them . For me its a clear underrated gem that had a concept that is twisted and bizarre but stylisticly cool and outstanding in its edginess . A bit hard to explain but i would appreciate to have more games when your mind is your weapon too .
Oh yeah, I remember the retsupurae videos on this game. It's a very cool concept for a video game. I don't think I knew there was a sequel. Looking forward to you maybe covering that some day.
Galerians is my favourite game series!! This video was awesome I love when people bring it up. The story is great and I loved the settings and music like you mentioned. This game is such an interesting take on survival horror and even the creator put his own fears in the game about what our future could look like. This video was awesome thanks for talking about my favorite game.
My first thought with the Shorting mechanic is that I wish it could run out on its own. Like, the paper in the very first room seems to imply the pill you take to stop Shorting halts the progression of the drugs in your system? I think? So it would offer an interesting alternative, while making more sense than it just not being able to kill you like Brit suggests here. So you could either let the drugs run their course until it subsides (maybe only to the point of it retreating halfway and the pill being the only way to get it back to zero) and potentially use a limited restore capsule if your health is low enough, or use an equally limited Delmetor and save as much of your health for future fights as possible. It could make putting your save file into an unwinnable state a lot more difficult while maintaining much of the difficulty, since you wouldn't be able to trigger a Short for every non-psychic fight without running out of resources, same as it works currently. Do gotta say, though, the uncanniness of the PS1 graphics really works in this game's favor, at least where Rion is concerned. The creepy look in his eye during the FMVs as he tilts his head down and just glares silently is mildly unsettling. In general, a lot of his unsettling expressions almost feel like they're hinging on the PS1 graphics.
Personally, I feel like the Shorting mechanic in this game is _fine,_ I feel like what raises it should've been more specific. It could've been more fair if it was only when you use your powers and when you refill them (the Dr Lem cutscene implies that was the case at one point, devs likely cut it early on), making it a more "do I attack, or run?" when it comes to decision making. I feel like if the first Galerians was ever planned to be a game with multiple endings, it should've worked like that, considering that you die from shorting in the end. As the game is, I think it gives you enough resources early on, and the amount of Delmetor and healing pills at the beginning is ridiculous (running from encounters also lets you avoid using your powers), it's only act C and D is when they get stingy with it, but on the upside, getting shorted and having to climb up the tower while munching on pills and having enemies around me die made for a tenser situation, because instead of dealing with the awkward combat, I was dealing with my health going down. The fact that they don't even give you at least one pill of Delmetor at the beginning is pretty questionable.
This channel will always be one of my favourites because despite spending most of my time for the last 15 years playing and watching videos about all kinds of games (and even working in the industry), Brit still introduces me to really cool looking older games I've never even heard of a single time before
one detail i liked from the footage you didnt mention is how the armored mech guys make the screen shake with each footstep. its a simple effect but it really conveys how heavy these things are with their slow, mechanical movements.
You've sent Galerians directly to my bucket list, although I've never heard of it before. I had always thought that great games before my time might end up being some of my favorites. I already think this is almost certainly going to be an example of that. I will keep all your tips in mind when I finally get around to it. Thanks, TGB. By the way, descawed's video was great. I'm glad you included it.
Great video! I love this game. Played through it back when it came out and it's one of my favorite ps1games, a real hidden gem. It's a shame the sequil was botched so badly.
literally thought this game was a fever dream for the longest time. couldnt figure out the name and just saw vague images...so glad i found out what it was!
OMG I have been trying to find this game forever!! It was definitely a game that always left an impression style wise for me, and I could always see it my head but never remembered the title of the game! Thank you so much! I’m one of the four or five players whom are going to go try and play it again.
Watched the first 4 and a half minutes of this video and instantly fell in love with everything about this game. Came back to watch the rest after beating the game. Definitely a raw diamond! Thank you so much for showing me this game I never heard of. That "Over 50 hours of gameplay" blurb gets a little funnier when you realize the timer doesn't stop when you pause and this was brought up in bug-testing and never fixed.
I watched an entire playthrough of this obscure early ps1 game. And I thought to myself “I hope someone covers this one day” sure enough the great gamingbrit has answered my prayers.
This popped up for me at the perfect time! I was in the middle of downloading emulators and installing them! Thanks for the recommendation! I'm excited to try it out!
Game Informet's SuperReplay is a great way to watch the game if you don't want to play it - Galerians truly has a special place in my heart when it comes to obscure video games :)
Heck yea Brit showing off Galerians, really love the tone and story of it despite it being pretty hard (as said, Item management is VERY important in this one). Never got to play the sequel, which is interesting with how the first game ends but i guess Galerians 1 did well enough to get one, i'm just happy if few more people know this neat title.
i remember playing this game a small bit a long time ago but could never remember the name of it, all i remember was the shorting system and how different it was in a inital lab setting.
First time watching this channel. Thank you for not doing a 2-4 minute time wasting introduction. It gets really old watching youtube video cheese time by struggling their way through a 5 minute redundant nonsense rant at the beginning of every video. Awesome vid.
Is no one gonna make an Akira comparison??? I’M NOT CRAZY AM I?!? A young telepathic boy going crazy and killing people with his psychic powers in a futuristic post-apocalyptic city, fueled by drugs and anger. Then the migraines killing just about everyone around him? This is literally Tetsuo simulator my dudes and dudettes. The only thing missing here is a best friend and an iconic motorbike….
Got memories of watching a friend play this game in my youth. I recall how we thought the mumbling enemies reminded us so much of Jack from Power Stone.
I played Galerians: Ash as a kid having no idea it was supposed to be a sequel. Thought it looked cool on the shelf in Blockbuster. I spent like a day and half trying to figure out how to play the damn thing before taking it back lol. Would love a video explaining whatever that fever dream really is.
I never played it, but a friend on an MMO told me about it and shared some clips. In particular, I loved the end-credits song. A couple days ago, I was thinking about this, and lo and behold..... lore-accurate irony🥴
Never heard of this game but as a fan of PS1 horror games, I'm definitely happy to learn about it. I actually kind of like games with the weird frustrations and challenges it sounds like this one has. I wish more modern games did this kind of thing even if it's locked off in higher-difficulty modes. I really appreciated that hardcore mode on RE2 Remake had limited saves and ink ribbons.
I'm so glad to see this game get love. I actually REALLY liked it in all its weird glory. I loved how eerie it was and while it was a challenge once I got the rhythm of things it wasn't that hard...except for that damned door knock. That knock sucked so hard. I was actually really thrilled that it managed to get a sequel and OVA with Galerians: Ash. And while I feel like the sequel lost that eeriness the original had going, I still enjoyed it. The story kept me engaged. Thanks so much for putting it out there for others to discover.
I loved playing this game as a kid. From the moment I saw the opening movie, I just knew this game was going to be awesome. Thanks for reminding me of the memories!
I watched the anime/short movie based on this before I knew anything about the game. I remember getting frustrated with it, especially the boss fights, but with some time, I've definitely come to appreciate its atmosphere and story.
I was obsessed with this franchise as a 10yr old ever since I first watched the movie adaptation (very embarrassing memories). I'm glad someone is talking about it, this series was pretty weird, but kinda fun
Great video! I just wanted to mention that I played this game when it originally came out, it is the first and only survival horror game that I beat. I respect it for being unique like that. I'm pretty sure I had a guide with me at the time, because I would have been stuck trying to figure out where to go, lol. I don't remember that annoying knock puzzle but I'm sure I got pretty frustrated. I do agree that I think 50 hours of playtime is exaggerating it, but it felt like over 20 or 30s for me. Thanks for talking about this game. I feel a lot of people missed out on it, but I also understand it will never be as memorable like the Silent Hill games or Resident Evil games.
Never played it but I found 8 part UA-cam video of the animated "movie/OVA" of it 10 years ago and have held an appreciation for it. Watched a Let's Play of Galerions Ash and it didn't impress, sadly
I remember watching gameplay for this and I still have the dvd for the movie (based off the first game). They didn't have a movie based off the second game. I wish both games were either remade or put on the Playstation store so I can truly play these games for myself.
Good game though I can't really compare both. I find Galerians to be more like parasyte eve 2. 2 because that one has alot to do with governmental conspiracy evolving humanity to use as weapons etc.
I remember this, and I remember that damned hotel room. It got to the point where I set up one of those psychic meltdowns for the moment I walked into the room. Bad guys' heads went a-splodey and I went on to finish the game.
Having played this when it came out, Galerians was a massive departure from what we expected of survival horror. You would alternate between a massive power fantasy and feeling helpless. The story had a number of interesting twists along the way, and by the end of it you felt for the Galerians. It is hard, but worth a play through. I think it would certainly benefit from a remake in a modern engine.
Bro this game lived rent free in my head (ash). I never knew what it was called tho and i was ass at it but very spooked as a kid. Thank you for reminding me of it again!!!
What's this? Galerians has a sequel that's completely unhinged and takes the story in bizarre directions? Where have i heard that one before....... "PEEEPOOOOOOOOO!" 😂
I think I accidently noticed the multiple items stacked on each other, but didn't register that was the case. The multiple interactions to get things to happen though was one of the few things I personally found frustrating. The knock was another one. it was funny how hard it was, but not 'alright I'm done' levels at least. Ash had issues, but it was pretty neat in its own right. The combat changes (to be RE4 esque) were funny. It felt fun enough, but yeah it definitely has issues.
Thank yiu for making this i always knew of this game but until now i always thought it was some weird fever dream i had as a kid turns out my older cousin at the time owned this for the ps1 and played it alot
This game sounds absolutely mental and I totally want to seek out a copy now. The PS1 era was on a whole other level in regards to weird, innovative titles.

This is gonna rock to fall asleep to tonight. (Highest compliment)
Glad I'm not the only one that uses these gaming essays to fall asleep
oh yes
Yes im so glad you chose this, such an underrated horror gem
Oh yeah, I remember the retsupurae videos on this game. It's a very cool concept for a video game.
I don't think I knew there was a sequel. Looking forward to you maybe covering that some day.
Galerians is my favourite game series!! This video was awesome I love when people bring it up. The story is great and I loved the settings and music like you mentioned. This game is such an interesting take on survival horror and even the creator put his own fears in the game about what our future could look like. This video was awesome thanks for talking about my favorite game.
Straight to the bucket list for sure, looks very cool. Thanks for covering.
Ah yes Parasite Adam. The lost little brother of the real hidden gem.
A proper remake of this with some minor fixes here and there but similar engine, music and aesthetic would be amazing.
Oh, this one is definitely going on my purchase list for... when have disposable income again.
There is sequel on PS2 named galerians : ash
Great video! I love this game. Played through it back when it came out and it's one of my favorite ps1games, a real hidden gem. It's a shame the sequil was botched so badly.
literally thought this game was a fever dream for the longest time. couldnt figure out the name and just saw vague images...so glad i found out what it was!
I love this silly game. Also the stomping making the screen shake at 5:35? So good.
And in Tecmo's Deception series you were Jigsaw. before Saw was even a glimmer in the writers eye.
OH GOD. GALERIANS. One of the most wild, difficult games EVER.
I watched an entire playthrough of this obscure early ps1 game. And I thought to myself “I hope someone covers this one day” sure enough the great gamingbrit has answered my prayers.
Oh, it's that one game that I only remembered from some group's inside joke.
Man this video unlocked an ancient memory in my brain. I have hazy memories of watching my cousin play this and tomb raider.
We need more reverse-survival Horror games that lets you play as monster - Galerians and CARRION are 2 of the only games that come to mind.
Watching this at night feels like someone threw more than one flashbang
Never knew about this game, very interesting concept!! When you think you know most of the PS1 library of games, you manage to find something new!
Thank you for covering this game. I loved it even if it was hard as nails. The hotel level was absolutely terrifying.
insane output by the one and only tgbs
Omfg I’m having war flashbacks od the Rita boss fight
hahahahaha, you and me, buddy.
we don't have games like this anymore
The MTV English dub of the movie adaptation is hilarious compared to the sub cause of the changed music to edgy nu metal
I saw this game when I was a kid on tv and I tried to find it for YEARS, I'm glad I finally found it, great video. (:
Ah, Ergo Proxy's cousin.
a game of my teenage years, i love it despite its flaws (same with the sequels)
i really enjoyed your video
Awesome to hear this covered, for some reason almost none of my friends have ever heard of this game so it's always fun topic to bring up
I remember watching the CGI movie that was basically all the cutscenes strung together
When I had to do the knock puzzle, I realized it was a slower "Shave and a Haircut" and, thankfully, that rhythm is burn into my psyche.
The difficulty in this game is not as bad as he makes it out to be, but maybe I was very patient and got lucky.
I beat this one back in the day I am glad you enjoyed it as well. Great video!
Damn you’ve been on a roll this year so far!
This was such a wild game to play as a kid. I'll never forget that intro, wish you'd mentioned it.
I kid you not, I saw a sequel to this game, MANY, years ago, and up until recently, I thought I just made it in my head
There was a catchy music video for this song back in the day. I still listen to it, it's the only reason i ever knew about this game.
I always loved the intro to this game. Both the song and the cinematics.
that opening is soooooo good.
IVE BEEN LOOKING FOR THIS FUCKING GAME FOREVER THANK YOU
I remember watching gameplay for this and I still have the dvd for the movie (based off the first game). They didn't have a movie based off the second game. I wish both games were either remade or put on the Playstation store so I can truly play these games for myself.
That door knock,Goddemmit
The 2000s equivalent of this game would be Drakengard
Good game though I can't really compare both. I find Galerians to be more like parasyte eve 2. 2 because that one has alot to do with governmental conspiracy evolving humanity to use as weapons etc.
I remember this, and I remember that damned hotel room. It got to the point where I set up one of those psychic meltdowns for the moment I walked into the room. Bad guys' heads went a-splodey and I went on to finish the game.
I played this game as a kid, could never get past whatever you needed to do in the house! :0
God, I think I saw this on retsuprae a million years ago
it's cool to see it given a fair shake, as much fun as seeing it dunked on was
Man I had this game and beat it I remember this so much it’s crazy how UA-cam reads my mind and shows this video
Thank yiu for making this i always knew of this game but until now i always thought it was some weird fever dream i had as a kid turns out my older cousin at the time owned this for the ps1 and played it alot
This game could rake in 1 million units sold on the first week I would definitely play this
I played Galerians: Ash and it is rare to see anything Galerians related
I remember hacking this game and giving the protagonist an infinite migraine causing everyone else`s head to explode. It was sick
This game sounds absolutely mental and I totally want to seek out a copy now.
The PS1 era was on a whole other level in regards to weird, innovative titles.
