@@gymnasticsrov5953 Yes, I never knew of this until the last year or so, I will never understand why this wasn't aired, one of the best beam routines I have ever seen. And yes, this would have been a gold medal routine.
If that was the case, she’d be WEARING that gold medal… just like in 1997. If a gymnast wanted a gold medal they had to make as few little errors and checks as possible. She DID NOT and that’s why she never won a beam title- period.
@saragrant9749 she fells from the beam in the compulsory competition and that's why she never made event finals at this Olympics. She did record the highest optional score on beam and could have theoretically won this final had she qualified for it.
One teensy balance check after the second back tumbling sequence, and it was barely perceptible. This is a perfect routine with no wolf spin to detract from it!
Fun fact; this got the highest beam score of all the gymnasts in the team optionals (9.875) Shannon Miller & Roza Galiyeva were joint second with a 9.862
To be fair scores in team finals were always a little more generous than event finals in those days. Amazing routine but Miller deserved the event final gold
@@kakumei77 well Shannon won the gold and still has it so stay pressed. Unless you wanna host your own Olympics, you be the only judge and award gold medals to your favourite - oh wait, no-one would turn up 😂😂😂
Only by the 10 scoring system and nothing more. She had a more difficult set than Gogean… but more noticeable checks. Gina had a very clean set and that’s what it took back then. No fault of the judges or anyone else save for that scoring system.

I believe this was the highest beam score in Atlanta, how is that NOT getting rewarded? We all wish she hadn't fallen in Compulsories, but your comment doesn't apply in this case.
Not as much as you might think actually. The acrobatic series would still receive credit but the leap series would lose a lot of value as it’s the same leap repeated multiple times- which doesn’t get recognized now. You have to do two different leaps in connection. It would still get a good score but not quite as high as it might seem.
Not that high actually. Several elements were repeated, rather than combos of varying skills so her SV wouldn’t actually be that high. The acro series would be worth quite a bit though.
She was a world floor champion so I have no doubt she’d be able to fix the dance elements, and clearly she’s flexible. She would be dogwalking girls on beam today. No one can compete with those acros.
@@aquajosh I’m not saying she couldn’t adapt to today’s code- that I have no doubt of her being able to. My point was that this exact routine wouldn’t score as highly as some might think, simply because of those dance elements.
Chinese gymnasts wobble a lot because they have a low center of gravity with their longer torso and shorter legs, so their top half often leans sideways, causing them to lose points despite how much they excel.
She fell during compulsory competition was her issue. Same story I’ve seen from countless (in particular Chinese) athletes- have the best set on paper, produce nothing in the moment it counts.
There was talk of getting rid of compulsories years before this. It was known going into this Olympics that this would be the last time they are contested. Generally the countries that did better in gymnastics were in favor of keeping them and the ones that weren't wanted them abolished. Makes sense really. A lot of the dominant countries in this sport were communist so they could afford to have two routines trained on every apparatus.
@@bbhouk1 that's not the point, the points is, she should have qualified because she got the highest scoring beam and should have not been hampered by her bad compulsory. Anyway, only optionals are done in the final, and no compulsory.
Nothing but love for Miller, but this was the gold medal beam routine of this Olympics.
It is an incredible routine!! I always wished that NBC had aired it.

What’s more insane is that her routine at the 1997 Worlds BB Final was even more difficult than this one.
