- Gymnastics experts had a love affair with Ling Jie. Listen how commentators Tim Daggett, Bart Conner, Kathy Johnson Clarke, Elfi Schlegel, Maura Driscoll and Carol Angela Orchard salivated over this great gymnast on bars and beam.
Ling Jie (born October 22, 1982) is a retired Chinese artistic gymnast. She was the 1999 World Champion on the balance beam, the 2000 Chinese all-around national champion, and the silver medalist on the uneven bars at the 2000 Olympics in Sydney.
Ling was also a member of the bronze medal winning team at the 2000 Olympics, but the medal was stripped by the IOC in 2010 after one of the Chinese team members, Dong Fangxiao, was found to be underage during the competition. In March 2012, the 1999 World Championship Team Bronze was forfeited by China and given to Ukraine in light of the same information.
She is the innovator of a skill on the uneven bars that bears her name in the Code of Points: the "Ling," a full pirouetting front giant starting and ending in the inverted grip.
Here is the original skill description of the Ling from when it entered the COP after the 1999 World Championships:
'Handstand on high bar - giant circle swing forward in L grip with stretched body to handstand with hop to regular grip on one arm during 1/2 turn to inside and continue with 1/2 turn outward to end in L grip in handstand phase.

Big fan of Ling Jie! She got a lot of hype on UB, but I always felt she was a bit soft in the low back which made a lot of her skills look over-arched. Funny enough on BB where she was a true master and a World Champion, she didn't get talked about as much. Her 99 and 2000 BB routines were a bit watered down, probably for consistency, but when she debut in 1998 she was stunning.

This is a lot of discipline and hard work, but their small slim body type helps a lot on beam and bars, especially those handstand pirouettes on bars.
OH MY GOD! A gymfan with a BRAIN! Someone finally says it: small, slim body type gives gymnasts an advantage. It’s why many Russian, Chinese, and Romanian used to and still do rely on young gymnasts. And recently Japan has gotten a lot of exposure due to this. Sadly, gymfans don’t recognize that the huge difficulty doesn’t usually translate to many senior careers due to growth and burn-out. That’s why the age limit was raised. But you still ignorant fans ignoring this and “stanning” juniors…
