Make Red Oak Look Ultra Modern | Making a DIY Trivet

  • I took a tile that I found at my home center and turned it into a really cool trivet! I was walking through my hardware store and stumbled across some cool tiles. I bought them knowing that I MUST turn them into something. The tiles were too cool not to. I decided that we need a trivet so that’s what I made. Most DIY trivets are a square, trimmed out with wood. They are a nice, clean look, but not what I was going for. I wanted to make my trivet for something larger, like for the main course of a meal. I made it rectangular with handles. That lets someone easily move it around if need to. Or, you can lay a spoon or ladle on it.
    To make my trivet, I used tile, MDF, and red oak. I used dowel joinery to construct the whole project. I personally do not like the look for red oak or its grain. It’s too grainy for me. I used oak because I have a TON of it and it’s really cheap in my area compared to other hardwoods. To make that oaky oak look less oaky, I filled the grain using a slurry I mixed from water-based wood filler and water. The watered-down wood filler allows the filler to drip down into the pores and deep grain pockets of the wood. Since it’s water-based, it dries pretty fast. I sanded the trivet to 180 grit, just leaving the filler that was embedded into the grain.
    I wanted to make my trivet black so it coordinates with the tile. I sprayed two coats of sanding sealer over the trivet, sanding with 400 grit between coats. I then sprayed the trivet with General Finishes black poly. It sprays like a dream! All I had to do was add a little hot glue, drop in the tile, and I had myself a stylish DIY trivet!

      There may be other water based ones but I've never found one better than timbermate.

    I've made a bunch of trivets using tiles, my only comment is that I leave the tile about 1/16 th proud of the wood in case someone sets a HOT pan on it, the wood won't be scorched.

    I am assuming that you fastened that tile in there somehow. How did you do it? It`s the only part that wasn`t detailed so that`s the part i wanna know lol. 5 minute epoxy?? Great video as usual. Thanks

      You can certainly use epoxy but some hot glue works fine.

    Great job Billy! I’ve made some trivets from David P’s (Make Something on YT) book using 6x6” tiles. Got them at Habitat Re-Store for .50 cents each. I’ll check next time to see if they have larger tiles. I’m not a fan of red oak either! 😀

    Just make sure it does not end up in the sink or dishwasher. The MDF will swell and fall apart.

    Awesome project man, love seeing you use a stain/paint/poly/whatever the heck that stuff is! Would love to know more about it, because it looks sweet!
    Side note, why can’t you sand grain away? I know you can’t (just in case anyone sees this comment and thinks I am dumb), just odd when you think about it……….you would think you could make oak smooth, but instead the grain keeps getting deeper as you take a layer off…..
    Ok, done on the ramble/pondering why grain is the way it is.

    • @miki09876
      @miki09876 2 роки тому +1

      As I understand it, the dark parts are a different hardness, so they sand at different rates. Particularly noticeable on softwoods. Also, if the pores are super deep, you can't sand them away.

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  2 роки тому +1

      The grain runs all the way through so it'll NEVER go away. Stuck with it for eternity. The black poly is amazing stuff. General Finishes makes it so I dropped a link in the description. It's poly, just like you would put over the project when it's completely done. But it's dyed black. No need to paint. It sprays like a dream. It's not thick like paint. It's a lovely finish to use.

    Looks great. But wondering why you filled the grain only to stain it black.

    It looks nice but if you're going to hide the grain and paint, why not.use steel tube and weld it

  • @jasonlovell3891

    As someone that loves the look of wood grain, i thought it looked amazing after sanding that wood filler. But why not use something like poplar (super cheap where i live) if you are just going to paint it? Still looks great.

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  2 роки тому +1

      Like I said in the video, I have a ton of it. I don't have a ton of poplar. Work with what you have.

  • @kanedNunable
    @kanedNunable 2 роки тому

    why not just use MDF if you want to lose all the wood grain tho? maybe im just envious that you have so much red oak and its crazy expensive to buy hard wood at the mo in UK :(

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  2 роки тому

      You certainly could use MDF but it wouldn't be as strong because the edges and "end grain" is pretty weak.

    I think if you stopped the music and added more voice over instructions people would feel more connected to your channel. Your personality and projects are dope but the music over the working shot montage is a turn off. Love your stuff though

    • @NewtonMakes
      @NewtonMakes  2 роки тому

      I believe the video shows perhaps 45 total seconds of music. Maybe that tiny bit is a turnoff, but that's okay! Almost every maker channel produces voice over videos. There are millions of options for people looking for those types of videos. I have to make videos that I am passionate about and at this time I don't enjoy making voice over videos. I'm perfectly okay with that not resonating with some people.
