A good friend came to visit me in Manila, Philippines when I was working for a mission organization there in the 80s. She brought with her an autographed signed cassette from Rich with the note to listen especially to this particular song. I knew him when he was still called Richard, a teen farm boy, and we were in a Christian youth choir called New Creations.
I rewatch this sometimes. I was raised by evangelicals, they rarely played music for us growing up, but besides some black and southern gospel, my parents would play Rich Mullins. We would listen to This is the World as Best as I Can Remember It on tape when we would go on long drives in my mom’s stick shift Honda when I was little, later in my teen years I would get other CDs from the local library and listen all the time. The lyrics of all his songs had a profound effect on me and I can see why, at the end of his life he was converting to Catholicism. I made that choice myself earlier that year, and I’m grateful for his music and his willingness to sing with catholic themes later in his career. What a humble man, thank you for impacting my life, Rich Mullins. 🙏🏻
I was raised Catholic. I saw the same movie about st. Francis at the same theater he did around the same time. We lived a half hour apart. I’m a year older. I would have loved riding with your mom in her stick shift and sharing the driving and cranking up the music. Don’t be a Catholic! Be a Christ lover. A Christ believer. For him it was distaste for farming growing up- thank goodness, cause if he loved farming, like his Dad did, we may not have got to meet + enjoy his very special music/lyrics etc. He knew what he wanted + liked, and never apologized for it. if people didn't agree, it was their problem, not his= CHARACTER! Never met one that wanted the glory or to be a rock star. None of them are perfect but they are annointed and called by the Lord Jesus to make music.
