The first fencing compilation I ever saw was @JesseMorrisAUSfencing 's [Yuki Ota: Fencing Highlights - Athlete profile #1](1). Now, 10 years later, I've wasted my life ayooooo :]
I first saw Cheung Ka Long 張家朗 fence at the 2015 Fencing World Championships, where he fenced Yuki Ota in the top 16 (2). Ota was in control of the entire competition, and the only major wobble was when he fenced Cheung Ka Long 張家朗 (aged around 18 at the time) where after being down 11/4, Cheung Ka Long 張家朗 managed to push the score to 11/11 before finally losing 15/12. The kid was good.
Then the next year Cheung Ka Long 張家朗 won Senior Asian Championships - beating Shikine Takahiro 15/14 after being down 10/14 (3). Then Cheung Ka Long 張家朗 qualified for the Olympics as an Asian individual spot, losing to the man who beat Yuki Ota a round earlier Guilherme Toldo.
In 2017, Cheung Ka Long 張家朗 won the Junior Championships pretty handily (4), then won his first Senior World Cup medal at St Petersburg by beating Gerek Meinhardt in the quarterfinal, before finally losing to Garozzo in the Semifinal (5). By this point, most people on the circuit knew that he will be a regular contender at high level competitions.
Over the next few seasons, Cheung Ka Long 張家朗 kept on getting results - making the Final of the 2019 Turin Grand Prix (6) and Bronze at the Anaheim Grand Prix (7). There were a few Asian Championship medals too of course.
Fast forward to 2021Tokyo Olympics, and this might be controversial, Cheung Ka Long 張家朗 was one of the favorites going into the Men's Foil Fencing Individual. Cheung Ka Long 張家朗 might have never won a world level major at the senior level before this, but the last time he had met the World Number 1 Alessio Foconi (who he drew in Top 16), Cheung Ka Long 張家朗 had won 15/4 (8). Then he would have to beat whoever won between Nikita Itkin, Borodachev K, or Lee KwangHyun, which would have been a toss up, but as long as it wasn't Itkin, chances were good. Then it's the semifinals. But hey, I'm not trying to downplay his achievement, it is still really really hard to win the Olympics. All I'm saying is, when Cheung Ka Long 張家朗 won, not that many people in the broader fencing community were surprised. The general feeling was, 'Eh, cool.'
And that brings me to the next point, at least Cheung Ka Long 張家朗 is fun to watch. Walking forward, beat flick always looks cool when it works.
