Life in kenya is good for middle class people at the expense of the maid/workers who earn 8000ksh(on a good day) for back breaking work all year round. Cost of living is sometimes more expensive then living abroad. Serious labour laws are long overdue. Just saying.
@Anonymous You get what you pay for; don't enslave someone with pennies on the dollar, and expect them to act like heavenly beings. If you cannot enjoy doing what you hire them to do, why would expect them to enjoy it, while being overworked, earning peanuts, and not getting days off? Even with a washing machine, you still need to pay more, if you want one that can also dry your clothes.
@Anonymous Why hire someone with Psychological issues? I will tell you why. You're not willing to pay what a person can live on decently. Instead, you want to treat them "nice" and pay peanuts. Hire a professional housekeeper or someone trained as an early childhood care giver, and you can stop worrying about getting help from someone with psychological issues. Moreover, don't let your home be a cage, give your housekeeper/help a day off every week. Let them have a social life outside yours. That's how you live and work with a grown-up person.
@Anonymous If you earn that little, and pay her that little, you are not generous. You are oppressed, and you are oppressing someone else. Which is interesting because it has been proved that someone who has been oppressed, is more likely to do it to others, than someone who has not been oppressed. Having said that, I do agree, there are a people who are just inclined to harm others, or enjoy the helplessness of others. And for most of them, it start when they were children, in a home of abusive parents/guardians, who were also being abused/oppressed elsewhere. Paying someone 600 a day, means paying 18,000 per month, without an off day. There was a time I earned that much, with two days off every work. By the end of each working day, I as was so tired to even make a meal for myself. The only thing that kept me going to that workstation each working day, was the promise of an increment after 3 months. After the increment, I quit after 12 months, because I realized I was in a rut. Thank God, I did not have any dependents then! Now, if I think of a babysitter who doubles up as a handmaid, and getting paid 4000-8,000, working 7 days a week, 365 days a year, with only 3-4 hours of sleep each day, and feeling exhausted everyday, I have no doubt, they are going to change for the worst, unless they are saints. There is a reason that God said people should take a day off. It was not for him, but for us. We all need it.
@Anonymous That's true. And if you do a followup, you will find out they come from a family, that was never truly loving and supportive. So if you are going to hire someone to live with you, the least you can do is to learn a few things about their family. Can you imagine the president of any country, hiring just a random person to help them raise their family? Background checks are important. If someone has had a difficult past, they need counseling/reformation to move on, if they can. I have seen it work for a few, as long as it's done before it's too late. Overall, before you hire someone to work for you at home, learn who they are, challenges they face, what you can do to help, and what they are planning for their future. If you cannot have that discussion, or you start on a path of lies, then you may have trouble ahead.
@Anonymous I agree, and that's what needs changing. We're literally driving each other to slavery, while the few elites live like kings, and amass wealth at alarming rates. In Kenya we need to start giving and demanding better remuneration for our labour. There are actually hand maids who work that long, in setups where extended families live together.
Absolutely understand what she means by saying there are too many bends & folds in Kenya. In other words corruption. Once you live for a long time ( in my case 21 years) in a country where corruption is non-existent and the institutions work efficiently as they should... the though of trying to start over again back home is alien and frightening. Especially when you have a family, relatives and even grandchildren... For example the traffic in Nairobi is terrible...Sarah is right about the difficulty of living here but life is great when you have the right to live here, work and pay your bills and help orphans back in Kenya. The village life here is lovely when you find your purpose & reason for being as Sarah has.

Heavy punishment was for it untill it ceased. The country is populous so many people work outcountry to promote their economy.I think its the best idea
