It requires you to set up a gated reverb to get the sound Phil Collins got (Collins is the person that basically invented the technique with drums on accident). To my understanding the C-78 was used as background rhythm all the heaving drumming is Collins on drums but the drums mic-ed with a gated reverb, which is to say they are miced on a compressed mic going through a noise gate making them snap- buts still real drums.

theglurgle Dude - "triggered samples" weren't a thing in 1981. Phil used a CR78 for the beat and played his Tama (at the time, I believe) kit for the acoustics. If they sound sampled to you that's probably due to the (at the time) pioneering "gated reverb" effect developed by Phil and engineer Hugh Padgham.
