I really believe in the power of turning away- my farrier said 50 years ago you’d never run a horse for 12 months of the year. Eventers would turn away for the winter, hunters for the summer and he really thinks there was a lot less lameness. I’m sure it will do her the world of good. She’s young which is the best time to do it!
I am in the same position as you. My boy has suspensory issues, had the surgery 4 years ago, rehabbed and turned away. Brought back into work this summer and he went lame 2 months later, nerve blocked and turns out it’s the suspensorys again so the surgery has failed. Tried medicating, that hasn’t worked, tried daily pain relief and it works only if he is in the field. As soon as we try and bring him back into work he goes lame again. Final decision has been made to retire him in 2 weeks time. Because of all of the stress/pain with his legs he has also been diagnosed with ulcers, we are treating them now and he will go to grass retirement for the rest of his days in a couple of weeks. We try the best for our horses ands that’s all we can do. I hope it’s good news in 6months time for you and snippy❤
Thank you, this is my fear with Snip and I can see us going down a very similar path. So sorry to hear about your boy, it's such a hard thing to go through ❤️
I am keeping everything crossed for you and Snip! I’ve had a similar chaotic year with my mare. Finally in June, after failed hock injections and a long and frank conversation with my vet as well as other professionals I trust, I sent my mare to rehab. I’m lucky that we have a fantastic barn very close, but it still felt like turning her away because initially she was in full rehab 5-6 days a week and because of my work schedule I could only see her once a week. To cut a long story short, we are now 5 months into our journey at this new barn and have moved from rehab to training. No injections or other veterinary intervention has been required, my mare is no longer sore or lame, and we are starting to canter again next week (fingers crossed!). More importantly though she is looking and feeling absolutely amazing and finally, for the first time in 15 years, is pain free. I really hope you and Snip have a similar experience. I wanted to throw this out there as something to think about after her 6 months of turn out. If you’d like to chat further comment. Horses are such a roller coaster of emotions and you’re doing a great job ❤
Thank you so much for sharing your story and so glad your mare is doing so well! We have been rehabilitating for 2 years now and did see huge improvements but she is now back to the start again hence the decision to turn away. Everything crossed the break will make some difference to her ❤️
Youd be surprised how much turnaway can help a horse! Iv known one before to be turned away for a couple of years due to a mysterious lameness that no vets could pinpoint, to then have the owners bring back into work slowly and then the mystery lameness was gone! Horse was sound the rest of its life and now retired happy hacker! I hope its a similar ourcome for you and snip ❤ but if not as long as shes happy xx
In July 2023 I decided to retire my 12 year old boy after 2 years of 2 steps forward and 1 step back and always going back to square one. Physio’s, rehab, saddle fitters, ground work. Everything thrown at him. We moved yards to a big paddock with field shelters and I’ve built a track system where all 3 of mine live out 24/7. He went barefoot and completely left to be a horse. A year on, he is a different horse. I have made that huge decision to fully retire him and it is hard. But he is the healthiest and happiest he has been in the 4 years that I’ve owned him. He has built up more strength than when he was ridden and his demeanour has changed a lot. I think it will do Snip a world of good. And fingers crossed she comes back better than ever. But if she doesn’t, making sure she is happy is the best thing any horse owner can do ❤️
@@lilpetchannel take care of yourself. You have done everything you can possibly do for snip and maybe a turn away for the next six months is what snip is needed.
Aw god Georgia I'm so so so sorry About Snip I'm sending all my love to u both I really hope she get better Sending my wishes for you both such a shame Poor Snip And u xx
Aww, she looks happy in her new field. I've cared for horses who have been turned away for a few months and most have come back fantastically, especially the ones who you least expect to return to work, which is lovely. Also is this why you have been advertising to buy a new eventer recently?
Thank you and yes we are on the search for my next event horse mainly due to feeling Percy is happiest at 80/90 and I'm looking to move up the levels but also to give me something positive to focus on at the moment while Snip is turned away and Percy enjoys his winter break x
Charlie is on lease still, right? In regards to Snip being turned out for 6 months, I think all that depends on the horse and the injury. She seemed to enjoy all you did this summer and as long as she's having a good time being a horse I don't think that getting her back in shape after her vacation is going to be a problem unless the injury isn't healed, but that's something you shouldn't worry about until you see how it goes.
Georgia, I’m so sorry to hear about this with snip, but try to look on the positive side, it’s probably exactly what she needs just to rest and be a horse for a while, and who knows if she comes back into work then just take it slow do whatever she needs and just don’t put to much pressure on yourself, it doesn’t matter if she doesn’t become a event horse, you still have Percy for that, just love her for herself and give her the life she deserves, your a loving caring person so she’s in good hands. Horses are not machines like us they get sick and sometimes things don’t work out but it’s not the end of the world .
I hope Snip does well in her temporary home. I'm impressed with your dedication to your horses' health and happiness! I hope Snip's health improves! ❤
Thank you, she always comes first just hope it makes all the difference

I bet Snips Had An Adventure
At my barn we turn away all the horses for a month and a half during winter maybe even more depending on the weather
So sorry to hear about Snip, but I know that you've made the right decision. Love your honesty Georgia ❤❤ xx
Thank you, I think it's so important to share all the highs and lows of owning horses🤍

Yes he is. The problem is it isn’t an injury it’s arthritic changes so there’s no guarantee of her improving, we just have to wait and see
