  • Thanks for tuning into another episode of Ryan and Bethany Board Game Reviews!
Today, we talk about our process for how we teach board games to people. It can be a daunting task, and it's not really a one size fits all solution. But if our goal is for our friends and family to like gaming as much as we do, then we need to kick things off properly with a fun, entertaining, teach of a game. And let us know any tips or tricks you might have as well!

I admit, I'm the worst teacher! And I'm the one who always does it!

Came across your channel while researching Space Battle Lunchtime card game and enjoyed the content! It was a bit older so I'm glad when I looked you guys up on UA-cam you were still making content! Subscribed and looking forward to watching this video as I'm the main rules teacher for our group and have been struggling recently to get a good flow as well as with people tuning out during longer teaches! :D (Also - you convinced me to pickup the space battle game :D)

That's awesome! I hope you enjoy Space Battle Lunchtime. We had a good time with it.
Teaching games can be tough. People are very distracted and impatient and want to get right to the action. I hope the video helped, and after the rush of Gen Con dies down, I plan on making more content about this as well as some design videos (in addition to our reviews!). :)

I usually feel terrible when I don't get all the important rules or strategies across and it makes me not want to teach games for a while, but at least I'm trying to teach them.
We've had a miniatures games player who would try to teach games and just steamroll people because he just had to win; that's why Infinity never really took off around here.

Yikes, yeah that's definitely not the way to teach. But the fact that you've seen a bad teacher probably makes you a much better one! Keep up the good work teaching your group!

Ryan, when the heck are you gonna teach me a game?? I might actually win a game for once 😅 Bethany isn't allowed to play though because then I probably won't win 😝

I'm definitely the one who teaches games the most in our group. Second would probably be my brother. I have a question! Do you often teach games you haven't played yourself yet? I find myself doing that A LOT and find it very challenging and tend to try my best to play competitively (as best I can without ignoring the teach) because at that point we're essentially on the same playing field. Now that I'm writing this, I think I'd want to do a whole topic on this lol I'm going to reach out to y'all!

I agree, it's the hardest to teach games that you've just learned cold from the rulebook. But I'm looking forward to making our video! We both have a passion for teaching and spreading the joys of gaming. :)

I disagree, reading the rulebook is 50% of the fun for me 😁

Lol, it can be for me too as long as no one else is waiting on me to soak in all of the rules. It can be therapeutic in a way. :)
