You saved me a TONNE of money by posting this very detailed video, I thought the install was going to be easier than the removal....boy did I have some headaches working backwards but my car is running much better now and I don't have oil spewing in to my engine bay anymore! My car: -2004 VW Jetta GLS 1.8T
Excuse me J Renner, but I happen to have the exact same car and I need to do this job as well; you think you can tell me what was the kit you bought for your maintenance project?, I´m a bit hesitant about what to buy as I've found that the hose setup for this car changed since 2004, many thanks.
Thank you... kind of you to say. Sadly, the majority of people watching... can't follow along with what is happening, because they need to see every little detail. =(
What's your favorite engine to work on? In what platform? And what's the one vehicle that makes you cringe when you see it pull into the lot? Every technician has at least 1
Touareg's come to mind... but then again, it's probably because we don't get that many. I don't like anything that I have not done / worked on before (or have seen more than a few times). So I guess if I worked on them more often, then they would also come off of my list. I like all (up to 2005) 4 cylinder engines... everything newer has too many gadgets / parts attached under the hood. Again... the more I work on the stuff, the more comfy I guess I will be. We don't do anything & everything and we don't see anything & everything in the shop. We are mainly a PM (preventative maintenance) shop... and seem to get more 4 cylinder customers than anything else. I used to like rebuilding aircooled engines (when I first started, we saw lots)... now a days, it seems that brakes, clutches, oil changes, timing belts etc keep us busy.
Any jeep up to 2005, Chrysler did not pay attention designing that that. Take the steering box out to remove the radiator that always crack. And like like you, anything I haven't seen/done before. Timing belts on Honda v6 can make me cringe. Love working on Ford, and Hyundai. We are mostly a PM shop as well. We don't see or fix everything and anything. It gets interesting though
Great video, the crankcase breather is putting up a real fight with me, disintegrating and the stupid copper part of the breather is now stuck in breather hole with disintegrated rubber around it. I have also managed to crack / snap one of the solid vac lines that are under the metal piece bolted to the inlet with x2 5mm Allen bolts. Oh and the 10mm bolt that holds the air pipe to the underside of this is rusted solid. So.. any ideas on part numbers for the hard lines and I'm thinking it may be an inlet manifold off job to gain enough access.. grrr cars lol

Hola thomas espero me puedas ayudar con una falla que presenta mi jetta 1.8t 01 en relenti bajan las rpm y después de 3 o 4 seg se normaliza y no Enciende luz del check . De antemano gracias
I just got a 03 gls 1.8T and the breather hose is not in place. At 6:10 you removed a clamp and I don’t have that on my car. Is anything else supposed to be holding it? Inside the hole ?
It's a "C" clip... the housing has 2 slots for the C clip to sit in. The C clip is what holds the plastic elbow in the housing. If there is no C clip, then the elbow should just pull out. Over time, the rubber seal (at the base of the elbow) can get stuck to the housing making it difficult to remove the elbow. Breaking the elbow into pieces and picking out the pieces from the housing is sometimes necessary when trying to replace it.
I just tried to replace the elbow hose, sadly it waa already broken by the joint and the plastic all fragile. While pulling the metall ring out, alot of pieces fell down that I did not manage to pick up with any tool I had, which left me quite devastated. But after googling around and founs you video, I will try to use our Dyson Vacuum with a smaller hose, HOPEFULLY it will get all the pieces out. If not, I'm screwed and have to take it to a mechanic. Passat 1.8T, AWT -04.
There's a metal gasket between the breather housing & engine block (part #10 in the following link / image). Anything that falls into that PCV hole, will sit at the bottom of the breather housing. The gasket has slots that prevent stuff from falling into the engine / oil pan. A narrow vacuum tube should be able to suck up what fell in. Thank you for watching! img.7zap.com/images/oem/vag3/VW/Bilder_zgd/194/194115500.png
Some of those hoses have special bends in them (the hose was "molded" into that shape). If you try to replace one of those hoses with a regular hose, the hose might kink and not pass any air. Otherwise, any hose that is straight(ish) can be replaced with an equally sized hose.
What tools were you using at 9:30? I’m having trouble getting the metal part of the elbow tube out and that’s the only thing that’s stopping me from completing the fix
Something like this: www.amazon.com/GearWrench-84061-Panel-Remover-Black/dp/B007QV4L1A/ Twist the crap out of the metal ring and then remove it. Don't forget to vacuum out the / broken bits that fell into the breather housing.
At 3:35 what are those small skinny hoses that u are pulling off that connects to that little metal plate?? I’ve been trying to look it up but I have no clue. One of those little hoses snapped so I need to figure it out
I accidentally broke all three plastic/pvc on the metal plate that connected to rubber hoses 3:48 min. Would you please kindly tell me what parts that I need to buy to replace them. My car is 2005 VW Gti 1.8t. Thank you.
You can buy a complete kit: www.ecstuning.com/b-genuine-volkswagen-audi-parts/vacuum-pipes-set-egr-valve/06a145691cb/ Or Match up vacuum pipes / tubing to fit, at your local hardware store.
Hi I finally able to order the parts that you’ve suggested from ECS. I have one question about how did you disconnect the metal plate the one on the left side. I kept re-playing the video in 2:21 min mark just to make sure I get it right but I couldn’t get it disconnected. I really appreciate it if you can tell me how. Thanks
Thomas EXOVCDS I have a 2001 jetta 1.8t. I've noticed that smoke is coming out of oil filler cap and oil dip stick at the same time. Car doesn't run bad. Do you have an idea of what the problem could be? Thanks in advance
Depending on engine & ambient temperature, it is normal for the PCV system to smoke... when removing the oil filler cap or dipstick tube. If it smokes as soon as the engine is started (cold or warm), then you might have piston ring problems (compression blowby). Does the oil filler cap dance when you leave it loose? instagram.com/p/ywFjz7FDfW/ Press the play button.
Would this procedure be similar for a 2002 MK1 Audi TT 1.8T? I am having idiling issues and think that I have leaks in my vacuum system and have oil leaking out of the engine too. Thanks for the video.
Great video, i have a hissing from the front of my TT and i'm pretty sure i need to change these pipes as it's also throwing a lean code from time to time and idle fluctuates.
Broken PCV hoses usually set a different code... I can recall ever running into P1176. Code info can be found here: wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17584/P1176/004470 Checking PCV components would still be part of "checking intake system for leaks'. Also check the exhaust for leaks (ahead of the rear O2). If your scan tool can view "fuel trim" values... check those, as they can point to a leak before or after the throttle body. MAF sensor, cleanliness of throttle body bore, coolant temperature sensor and even correct thermostat operation can play a role In fuel metering / O2 sensor operation. Unfortunately there's never just one cause for a specific code... well, some codes have specific causes.
Eyyy Thomas, here in Mexico that replacement parts (Valve&Hoses) are to expensive at VW shop, is there to many problem if I delete this with a cap down there and a plug on the superior "Y" hose?
You can eliminate the PCV... but you have to keep it open at the engine with a small air filter, so that the crankcase can breathe (not build up pressure, which causes oil leaks). Google Search "1.8T PCV delete".
+Thomas EXOVCDS Thanks a lot!!! I found this, what do you think about these two mods?? It look's pretty useful, don't you think? myfastgti.com/volkswagen/threads/15839-MKIV-GTI-GLI-1-8T-PCV-Delete-Catch-Can-Install-amp-Brake-Booster-Mod#/forumsite/21118/topics/15839?page=1
Thomas EXOVCDS Enjoy your videos and subscribed. I wonder if you could help me where to start with my jerky 1.8t AUM Golf/Rabbit 2002 model. It jerks from cold at low revs (under 1500 rpm) like a mild kangarooing. You can feel the power almost doing a little surge and then cutting out. It's pretty much ok once warm. Is this likely to be a vacuum leak? If I drive fast the power and boost seem fine. I've cleaned MAF, renewed N75 valve, new diverter valve, cleaned throttle body but only allowed car to reset that by waiting to start the engine with ignition on for a minute. Where should I check/renew next? Pcv hoses, pcv valve or throttle body alignment? Something else? Thanks for any advice!
Hi there Sir, excuse me but I have a vw jetta mk4 1.8T 'late' AWP and I´ve been told that the AWP engine has a different hose setup since 2004, could please confirm me if this DIY is for the late AWP version or the early one? (99-2003), thank you very much for your time.
The process is similar... just the parts are different. Buy the parts that are correct for your vehicle and then follow this video... as a general guide. A parts store that specializes in selling VW parts, will sell you what applies to your engine. If you would like to check for yourself, you can do so by using this online parts catalog: volkswagen.7zap.com/en/usa/jetta/jem/2004-270/1/ Select the vehicle, year and then Engine 1... look for "ventilation for cylinder head".
Great video! What is that part called the one that you have in your hand at 7:57 ? What hose is that? Or set? One of those certain hoses broke and need to replace it, can u send me a direct link to where I can buy it?same car VW 02 Jetta 1.8T I'm having a hard time finding it online
@@EXOVCDS not cheap, could only find the 90deg piece of hose I found that was split direct from skoda at £117 available as a group of hoses and fittings preassembled. Luckily I have most of the other hoses left over from a kit and can replace most everything so hopefully this cures some of the errors flagging up on my scanner.
Hello Thomas quick question why or how would coolant be getting in the intake threw intercooler on a 1.8t jetta im loosing coolant every few days i have to put coolant in the bottle and engine stumbles from coolant thanks
You verified that coolant is in the intercooler? The turbo is oil & water cooled... it could be that the turbo is leaking coolant into the intake. I have not seen this happen before. Are you sure that there are no external leaks? Coolant flange at the side of the cylinder head is a common leak source... as is the water pump, radiator and heater core flanges.
@@EXOVCDS I took the hose off the throttle body and it was wet with coolant not alot but had a film of coolant. Im going to check the the intercooler after work today and see if it has coolant in it im 90% sure i dont have an external leak theirs no visible leak that i see. I did a compression test all 4 are 120 not great but the same. Its weird once car cools down i take the cap off the coolant ball its like theirs vacuum because the coolant comes rushing back in is that normal? Thanks for your help i really appreciate it
I took the intercooler off and it just had oil in it maybe a cup. Im not sure what it would be somehow i believe coolant is getting in the cylinder somehow could a head gasket go bad and still have decent compression?
I dropped a small piece of plastic from the elbow inside..i tried to vaccum it out you think itlp clog something up or the pick up tube filter will hold it back
There's a gasket between the block and the pcv / oil flange housing. Most likely, the piece will stay in the housing (#1 of following image). Yes, worst case, it will get stuck to the oil pump pickup tube screen. img.7zap.com/images/oem/audi/Bilder/194/194115500.png
@@EXOVCDS thanks for the reply and photo..I was worried it would get sucked up and lodged in the turbo..if worst case it gets stuck in the screen thats not bad. I can drain the oil see if it comes out or drop the pan. Id say odds are its going to be pulverized by the crank if it makes it that far lol
How would I install this way on a TT 225 bam I've got a pcv valve inline to run back into the nipple on intake most block off, but still not got the correct suction on my oil cap, it's like it's a pulsating suction it's strange
The crank case has pressure pulses... that's normal: instagram.com/p/ywFjz7FDfW/?igshid=YmMyMTA2M2Y= (Press play). If your pcv has been modified... install all factory components.
Hi Thomas, can a bad PCV valve cause oil burn in boost? my passat 1.8t smokes a litle when the motor is hot and when i hit the gas after a stop signal.
We deal with local wholesale suppliers... there are many Euro parts stores that will carry what you need. Some are: Ecstuning.com GermanAutoparts.com IDParts.com ShopDap.com
Many things can cause that code: wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/16555/P0171/000369 Even a faulty EVAP Purge regulator valve. What are the long term fuel trim values for Idle & Part Throttle?
I'm getting low MAF readings even after cleaning it, and low boost. I've replaced SJP, the 3-way check valve next to it, DV, lots of hoses under the manifold, and made sure my N80 is working along with a new check valve after it. Cold start is a bit rough but, no high idle. Also I can feel blow by pulsating out of the oil fill hole when I remove the cap during idle, and I hear a quiet hissing sound under the intake manifold which I can't track. Do you know if it is PCV, PRV, or maybe a leak somewhere else? Been trying to track down this problem for months and it's really bothering me. Thanks
Normal oil filler cap dance at idle: instagram.com/p/ywFjz7FDfW/ Smoke test the engine for leaks... if you can't see the leak, smoke might help find the leak / the source. If you don't have access to a smoke machine, remove the intake manifold so that you can see all of the PCV hoses & plastic tubes.
is there a short cut to just changing the pcv valve, or should i be prepare to change all the components, dont want to disable car in driveway waiting for parts. alway big help thumbsup Thomas EXOVCDS
Depends on what you need... if all the PCV hoses & plastic tubes are soft, cracked, broken, then replace everything. If only the check valve is bad, replace the check valve. It's a good idea to replace as much as you can, so you don't have to go back in there at a later time. Replace every 5 to 8 years... depending on driving habits.
Hey Thomas, I'm video hopping here but I'm not seeing one of these for an AMB 1.8T found in my B6. Off the top of your head, are there any possibly brittle parts that would make doing it from under the intake manifold a risk, or would it be fine?
This video shows most of the common PCV parts (under the intake) that fail. ua-cam.com/video/rjdTfETe5Dk/v-deo.html This video will give you an idea for removal (you will have more room on your car): ua-cam.com/video/_bB3nY0NiP8/v-deo.html The Jetta / Golf PCV components are similar to yours. I always leave the intake in place... some guys remove the intake (takes longer, but you have more room).
LOL...I replied via my UA-cam comments page and didn't realize you were watching / posting under the video that I linked. The first link applies to your car though and gives you can idea of the components.
***** The bits can't fall into the oil cooler... just the block PCV vent chamber. I'm sure that's what you meant. Just clarifying for others that might be reading this.
You pretty much have to break / bend the piece to get it out... then, use a vacuum cleaner to suck the broken pieces out of the PCV chamber in the engine block.
would you keep stock or go after market upgrades? silicon hoses etc for replacement parts or did volkwagan get it right and not ripping you off with weak stuff? replace with non oem or oem?
thomas im having issues with a p0171 code on my mk4 gli i have a tear in that pcv hose so its def leaking would that cause the cel to turn on and pop up with unmeasured or too much air in the system ?
ok awesome i was worried i have a stock tune and a front mount intercooler didnt know if that was causing the issue cause how big the cooler is compared to the stock one
I'm still at work... go to www.ecstuning.com/ and talk to someone (phone). Tell them you are replacing PCV components. They will have all you need. I'll check back in on you after I get home from work later tonight.
Bro these cars have fixed alternator pulleys, not freewheeling ones, and that doesnt mean they are bad.. The car still runs smooth, as it is supposed to. The freewheeling alternator pulley can reduce vibrations when a heavy mass alternator is installed. These are fixed from the factory.
Bro... not all. As can be seen at 0:13, only clutch pulleys have plastic covers over the face of the pulley. A non clutch pulley does not have a plastic cover... and in that case, you will see the 24mm mounting nut for the pulley.
@@EXOVCDS Ok, thanks for the explanation. I thought mine was bad because people on youtube are saying this. Then a mechanic told me that mine is fixed from the factory and that thats petfectly fine.
I have been trying to do this project for at least a month now but I can't seem to find the part number for the crankcase breather hose? The plastic elbow hose that goes to the crankcase.. I've ordered at least two or three different kinds and they do not seem to fit for some reason could you please help or send a link to that hose
What's the 3 letter engine code that is stamped on the cylinder head by the timing belt cover (it's also on a sticker that's on the timing belt cover). What year? Golf, Jetta?
Have you looked through this site? www.ecstuning.com/Volkswagen-Jetta_IV_GLI--1.8T/Search/SiteSearch/pcv/ Post a video on your channel of what part you need.... so that I can see.
There's a part number in the link and in the web page... simply google it to find an ad in the UK, or phone your local VW / Audi workshop or independant VW / Audi workshop (quickest turnaround most likely).
I just took off the intake manifold on my 2001 Audi TT 225hp 1.8 it was much easier than what your doing. So while I have it off do you think I should replace what ever is under it? Thank You L.A.
I need help the hoses right under that bracket holding the dipstick broke, actually the plastic nipple on the sensor broke and I have no clue what it called were I can get a new one ????
what parts should i grab if i go to wrecker, engine mostly and drive train. new used owner, 03 vw jetta gls sedan 1.8T 150 000kms. what to grab because i will need?
I ordered a 034 Breather Hose kit but I didn't received the connecting hose that you removed... what would that connect to on the 034 breather hose kit?
I'm not familiar with the kit.. there are slight differences between different 1.8T engines. Did you order for your engine code? Did you contact the seller / manufacturer?
Thomas EXOVCDS I did order the correct kit for my engine code... I have that same vacuum line that connects to the end of the intake manifold but the kit doesn't come with anything that connects to the vacuum line that separates and connects to the breather hose
Hello Sir.I have a 1.8t jetta 2002 and im getting a lot of air in the engine. my oil cap is dancing on the cover when unscrewed. So I did change out the small crank case PSV and the PRV valve ( the pancake looking valve) and checked for plugged lines. everything was clear. But Im still getting lots of air in the engine. any suggestions?thank you
A "dancing cap" is normal. I would need to see fuel trim values to see if something was off (air/fuel mixture wise). Here's a sample of a good running engine with dancing cap: instagram.com/p/ywFjz7FDfW/
that's good. I was kinda worried there. It is exactly what my cap is doing.Other than that everything else looks good so far. is it worth doing the emissions control delete?thank you Sir
It's a good time to do the thermostat if the car needs it usually I go with the scan tool for a test drive and see if the temperature reaches at least 90 deg C. Before taking it apart theses days I like to offer the silicone kit the only thing I seem to get issues with figment for 2004 and 2005 car one hose seems to be too small and I have to put a stock rubber hose. Don't you think that they made too many of theses parts for the 1.8 T engine. engine codes years models etc it gets confusing.
V10PDTDI Our customers are usually of the "only do what is needed / what I am in for" type... meaning that once we tell them they need more (even though it is easier & cheaper to do while we have everything apart) they usually pass on the suggested repair, since there are no current symptoms to what we would like to add to the repair. Yes, those 1.8T's have way too many versions & part!
I have a 2003 audi tt 1.8L and it is missing the hose you took off at 7:20 min in your video. wondering what is the name of the part and where can i buy it? thank you for all the videos you upload it. they have help me fix my car.
You probably have something else / that looks different. This video is for a VW A4 / mk4... Audi's probably have a different setup. Phone your local Audi dealership, give them your VIN number and have them email you a parts diagram for your PCV system.
+vwivancc I believe they are the same... the letter is the version, K being the version more recent than F,... if I remember my part number break down correctly: blog.europaparts.com/audi-vw-part-numbers-demystified/ If you google image search, you will see both numbers come up with the same looking part. I'f I am wrong, sorry.
***** Thanks Thomas. I have found the difference. The part with "K" is longest than part wtih F ending. Their position is the same but the use is for different vehicles. F is for A4 Platform and K is for Sharan.
vwivancc Thanks for the info! I'm lucky to not have to worry about ordering parts that often myself... I usually just get them handed to me once they arrive.
Hey so I've been getting an check engine light that has emissions workshop come on the dash on and off for months it comes and go as it pleases and has been off for a month and randomly came back two days ago it's never been a problem before except that my inspection is due in a month and I need to be able to pass emissions. Any idea what could cause it to be going on and off so infrequently?
The fault code will tell you... could be a number of things. Why guess when you can scan it and read the code. Even if the light is off, there might be a code in memory. If the light is off for the inspection, it might pass. If the light comes on before the inspection, read the fault code and let me know what it is... then I can help.
Can anyone help..... What is the pipe called that he lifts up at 1:07? Mine has snapped whilst working where it was so fragile. I need a replacement. Thanks in advance.
That's a Secondary Air Injection pipe. The long one goes down to the Airport Pump... the shorter one goes to the combi valve. I can find part numbers for you after I finish work tonight.
I just found them. I was being lazy and typing sai lines and what not but then I typed secondary air injection line and it came up. Thanks for the help though. Hopefully this will help someone else out. Cheers mate
I have a 2003 VW Jetta my engine shake every time I start it for the day. Once the engine is hot the shaking stops. Could it be the pcv ? It has not yet turn off on me while driving
Shaking as in running rough? Is the check engine light flashing? If it is, then the engine is misfiring... and that could be due to PCV components that are bad / broken. Open the hood and listen to the engine... listen for hissing sounds (air leaks). If the engine is not misfiring, it might me shaking due to bad engine / transmission mounts. Which engine? 1.8T? Check for fault codes (even if the check engine light is not on) and also check "fuel trim" values (if the scan tool is able to read them).
@@EXOVCDS Appreciate the quick reply! I'm looking at doing a lot of preventative maintenance and I'm trying to learn more about the different systems specifically on my 1.8t. These videos help a lot. Would the PCV system have anything to do with a boost leak? (probably a dumb question)

@@EXOVCDSThanks for your message, 2005 Skoda octavia vRS 1.8t engine code AUM. I am also getting few more problems, 1. Light smoke from exhaust on idle. 2. Engine oil cap bouncing on idle. 3. In 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th gear at 3k-4k rpm performance loss. Are you active on your forums, Can I start questioning there with videos and pictures? Thanks.
Performance loss how? Just lack of power or is clutch slipping? wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/Fuel_Trim_Info Are all the splash guards in place in the intake camshaft? How many km's? As engines get old, they will have more blowby gasses in the crankcase... when then goes through the PCV system. Check for excessive oil at the base of the intercooler at every oil change. Check the turbo shaft for excessive freeplay. Check engine compression & leakdown and the spark plugs (to see if all cylinders behave the same). How much oil do you have to add at every 1600Km? "I think" VW says 1/5L for every 1600km is ok.
They could all be related... a vacuum leak can can cause misfires (p0300), incorrect SAI flow (p0411) and the lean code (p0171). Check vacuum hoses, PCV hoses etc.
Nice one... i changed twice some pcv hoses that worn early..... i will apply this next time, for the other pcv components, cuz i dont want 2 do the bypass :P
Remove the valve and then try to blow through it. Little air pressure should pass in both directions... when you use lots of air pressure, then the valve should BLOCK air flow.
@@EXOVCDS Are you sure it should dance like that? Mine does and im afraid its something wrong with the pcv, as ive heard for volvos alteast that there should be a vacume instead of a blow? Thanks ! =)
It's very similar... as long as you have the correct parts, remove what you have to, to get at what you want to replace. The beetle has the vacuum solenoids mounted above the intake manifold, the Golf & Jetta below. The PCV stuff for both is below and to the side of the manifold (as shown in the video). If you run into any issues... just post a message.
Order according to your engine code / vehicle vin... or talk to someone at a VW parts store ECSTuning, Germanautoparts, VW Dealer... so that they can match things up correctly.
Carlos Porras This piece: techtonicstuning.com/main/images/06A103213F.jpg If you have the new part, you should be able to see the metal ring on the inside.
Have all the old pieces been removed? Should pop into place with a bit of effort, but should not be impossible. I use a long screwdriver and push from the top. Be careful, as a screwdriver can bit into / break the plastic if you are not careful.
Hey Thomas, I have a gli 1.8t 8t( first time owning a turbocharged car) and I've noticed oil on the hose shaped like a Y(min 7:20) on the combi valve and by the turbo(all that side has a thin layer of oil). The car was working good, but I 've noticed a boost leak and the turbo sounds different. I already checked all the connections and hoses for any air leaks. I'm guessing it could be the pcv, combi valve, n75 valve or the turbo. Could a bad turbo still works without burning oil (smoke)coming out of the exhaust? Not happening in my case. Thank you!
It's common to have oil at various PCV locations such as the one at that Y. A good PCV tune-up (replacing various hoses, check valves etc) can solve those oil leaks & PCV fume smells. Boost leaks can enter the pcv system if the check valve is bad. If you are not getting any boost codes, boost should be within spec. Clean / shampoo all the big intake hoses & intercooler, so you can see fresh oil / stains from any air leaks. Check the intercooler itself for excessive oil (at the base of the cooler).

Our local parts supplier. You can order them online from a variety of vw / audi parts stores. Send them an email and ask for a complete kit... or remove only the broken pieces and order them.
You can block off wastegate control (be careful, turbo will overboost) to check wastegate. If you have good power when it is blocked off, then look for wastegate control issue (N75 etc). Air / boost leaks, fuel restriction etc need to also be checked.
Thomas EXOVCDS ive swapped them and replaced cylinder 1's. the plastic inside of the pig tail has cracked and broken pretty bad so I'm thinking that may be it
Thomas EXOVCDS so far now ive replaced the coil, swapped coils around, gotten new plugs (bkr7e) gapped them to .028 (stage 2 ecu) and replaced the pigtail for the mifiring cylinder and I still can't get rid of the misfire. now the car is smoking a little (smells like oil) from somewhere under the intake manifold. what else can I replace or check to find out what's causing this damn misfire?
the misfire also pretty much goes away while driving. the car runs normally but is also (pretty sure) in limp mode because its only boosting 5 psi. can the misfire code cause limp mode too?
Check compression... oil burning smell is common if valve cover oil is getting on to the exhaust. Unless PCV fumes are leaking out of broken plastic pcv pipes / hoses and you are smelling that. If you have a local tuner (that installed the tune)... have them check the tune again.
What up og would a clogged pcv system cause a oil leak and that last piece u took out mines is completely broke in half thanks for the great vids u do a good job
Yes, if the PCV system / fumes are not vented (into the intake system)... pressure in the crankcase / oil pan will increase and oil leaks can develop. It's a good idea to check / replace all those plastic PCV components every 5 years or so... or replace broken plastic pieces as soon as you spot them.
You saved me a TONNE of money by posting this very detailed video, I thought the install was going to be easier than the removal....boy did I have some headaches working backwards but my car is running much better now and I don't have oil spewing in to my engine bay anymore!

Very good details especially at the end 12:00 min how they all fit together. Easy to forget once you take apart. Thanks
Thank you for watching & taking the time to comment!

Enciende luz del check .
Thanks Thomas I will check it out it also makes a little whistle when cold start for like a minute
The whistle is the SAI pump (most likely).
The 3 oval slots are the pcv breather holes for the crankcase.
The other holes are covered by the breather housing & engine block.
Oil passages.
The assembly of hoses that you removed at 3:50 is it possible to repair those if 1 joint leaks? Or do I have to get new ones?
Some of those hoses have special bends in them (the hose was "molded" into that shape). If you try to replace one of those hoses with a regular hose, the hose might kink and not pass any air. Otherwise, any hose that is straight(ish) can be replaced with an equally sized hose.
What tools were you using at 9:30? I’m having trouble getting the metal part of the elbow tube out and that’s the only thing that’s stopping me from completing the fix
Something like this:
www.amazon.com/GearWrench-84061-Panel-Remover-Black/dp/B007QV4L1A/
Twist the crap out of the metal ring and then remove it. Don't forget to vacuum out the / broken bits that fell into the breather housing.

Would this procedure be similar for a 2002 MK1 Audi TT 1.8T? I am having idiling issues and think that I have leaks in my vacuum system and have oil leaking out of the engine too. Thanks for the video.
Yes... similar pcv design / issue.
@@EXOVCDS thanks. I'm also trying to figure out where I would inject smoke into the system to find out where the bad hoses are.
Great video, i have a hissing from the front of my TT and i'm pretty sure i need to change these pipes as it's also throwing a lean code from time to time and idle fluctuates.
PCV components is always a good place to start with (to solve running / lean issues).
May i ask a question? I have the same engine and i have a fault code P1176. Is that hoses the reason to showe this fault code? Thank you
Broken PCV hoses usually set a different code... I can recall ever running into P1176. Code info can be found here:
wiki.ross-tech.com/wiki/index.php/17584/P1176/004470
Checking PCV components would still be part of "checking intake system for leaks'.
@@EXOVCDS Ok thank you i will check it
Did you put clamps on the new parts?
Yes.

The process is similar... just the parts are different. Buy the parts that are correct for your vehicle and then follow this video... as a general guide.

I did a compression test all 4 are 120 not great but the same.

Smoke test the engine for leaks... if you can't see the leak, smoke might help find the leak / the source. If you don't have access to a smoke machine, remove the intake manifold so that you can see all of the PCV hoses & plastic tubes.

Depends on what you need... if all the PCV hoses & plastic tubes are soft, cracked, broken, then replace everything. If only the check valve is bad, replace the check valve.
Hi Tom. I do have a Passat 1.8 T AWT and it blows air and fumes thru the oil cap above the engine. What it can be? Thank you.
Loosen the cap at idle... if it dances, that's normal.

Loosen "the cap" at idle... sorry.
V10PDTDI can this cause the car to ovee heat
I have a 2003 audi tt 1.8L and it is missing the hose you took off at 7:20 min in your video. wondering what is the name of the part and where can i buy it? thank you for all the videos you upload it. they have help me fix my car.
You probably have something else / that looks different. This video is for a VW A4 / mk4... Audi's probably have a different setup. Phone your local Audi dealership, give them your VIN number and have them email you a parts diagram for your PCV system.
The part that you set on the counter at 8:45. Is that a part of the vacuum line/pipe? Where can I purchase the part?

Hey Thomas, please help me. Is there some difference between this part 06A 103 213 *F* *and* 06A 103 213 *K*?? Thanks

Do you happen to know the part number to the line you removed at 8:34?
I'll have a look when I'm at work tomorrow / Friday.
The part number should be on the pipe... could be this one:

Mr. Thomas, I ordered a vacuum kit from ecs and I have 14pieces and really not sure where they all go. If you could help that would be great.
Which kit?
Vacuum hose kit
Have you got a link to their kit?
let me get it for you sir.

Should the battery be disconnected when doing this?
You can if you want to.
can this pvc valve be the cause off small cutoff in idle ?
I don't know what you mean by cutoff in idle. It can affect idle, yes.
What would cause the turbo to flutter when letting off the gas. I had a new DV installed a month back and this started happening today
Ty White Check for correct DV operation... broken vacuum line / hose, faulty vacuum solenoid, torn DV diaphragm etc.
Ty White did you ever fix this? Mine was a bad n249.
_Jetta GLI_ turned out that the new dv was faulty. Got another one
Not Airport pump... AIR PUMP. LOL
What did you take out at 10:04 and 10:11? I know I'm pretty late to this video but hopefully you have time to respond. Much appreciated.
Or anyone can respond, doesn't have to be OP.

Not a dumb question. A bad PCV one-way check valve will set boost / pressure drop codes.
where did you buy your hoses for the pair
Daniel Georgescu We use local parts suppliers.
What are those lines you cut? I broke them and can't figure out what they are call.
The generic vacuum hoses? You can get generic vacuum hoses at any auto parts store. You can buy them in various sizes (inside diameter) and length.
And the two you used the hose tool on are vacuum lines as well? Used this video this morning to change my breather tube. Very helpful
I haven't watched the whole video... if no coolant or gasoline came out... vacuum / PCV hose.
How much did you charge for replacement!?
I don't handle invoicing, sorry.
My check engine light keeps coming on my V.W. Passast 1.8 turbo 2005. Should this be a concern?
Barbara Taylor I don't know... what's the fault code?
Misfire
Barbara Taylor Yes... you should be concerned. Misfires can damage the catalytic converter. 1 cylinder or all? Idle or when driving?
It went off but came back on after a changed a broken vacuum valve.

@@EXOVCDSThanks for your message, 2005 Skoda octavia vRS 1.8t engine code AUM. I am also getting few more problems,
1. Light smoke from exhaust on idle.
2. Engine oil cap bouncing on idle.
3. In 2nd, 3rd, 4th, 5th gear at 3k-4k rpm performance loss.
Are you active on your forums, Can I start questioning there with videos and pictures?
Thanks.
Yes, I read the forum... I'm at work, so I won't be able to reply until I get home later tonight after work.
Performance loss how? Just lack of power or is clutch slipping?

Are all the splash guards in place in the intake camshaft? How many km's? As engines get old, they will have more blowby gasses in the crankcase... when then goes through the PCV system. Check for excessive oil at the base of the intercooler at every oil change. Check the turbo shaft for excessive freeplay. Check engine compression & leakdown and the spark plugs (to see if all cylinders behave the same). How much oil do you have to add at every 1600Km? "I think" VW says 1/5L for every 1600km is ok.
Thomas I have a 2003 vw gti 1.8t with the codes p0300 p0411 p0171 can u help me out on this?
They could all be related... a vacuum leak can can cause misfires (p0300), incorrect SAI flow (p0411) and the lean code (p0171). Check vacuum hoses, PCV hoses etc.
replace clamps with what clamps? preferred?
I like reusable screw clamps.
Nice one... i changed twice some pcv hoses that worn early..... i will apply this next time, for the other pcv components, cuz i dont want 2 do the bypass :P
hi. sorry for my inglish. how i know if the valve pcv its ok or bad? the engine is 1.8t vw jetta. thanks from argentina
Remove the valve and then try to blow through it. Little air pressure should pass in both directions... when you use lots of air pressure, then the valve should BLOCK air flow.
Thomas EXOVCDS
whitout removing the valve i can know? what symptom would i have?
Oil filler cap should "dance" if the PCV system is working correctly: instagram.com/p/ywFjz7FDfW/
Thomas EXOVCDS
my engine does exactly the same then it is correct. thanks regards
@@EXOVCDS Are you sure it should dance like that? Mine does and im afraid its something wrong with the pcv, as ive heard for volvos alteast that there should be a vacume instead of a blow? Thanks ! =)
Could you do this on a new beetle 1.8t since they're not identical?
It's very similar... as long as you have the correct parts, remove what you have to, to get at what you want to replace. The beetle has the vacuum solenoids mounted above the intake manifold, the Golf & Jetta below. The PCV stuff for both is below and to the side of the manifold (as shown in the video). If you run into any issues... just post a message.
@@EXOVCDS I really appreciate that. I'm just trying to simplify my engine bay.
all 1.8t the same setups when it comes to changes the hoses ?
Similar... some differences.
Thomas EXOVCDS yea I bought a kit but it doesn’t seem to fit . Do you know how I can go about getting the right hoses ?
Order according to your engine code / vehicle vin... or talk to someone at a VW parts store ECSTuning, Germanautoparts, VW Dealer... so that they can match things up correctly.
whats that part that you took off around 10:09?
Carlos Porras That's the metal support / the inside liner of the plastic elbow.
Carlos Porras This piece: techtonicstuning.com/main/images/06A103213F.jpg If you have the new part, you should be able to see the metal ring on the inside.
Hey Man,
Is there any trick to getting this elbow to seat properly? Mine seems to be rocking back and forth without seating.
John Thomas Make sure that all theold pieces have been removed. It can take a bit of pressure to pop the new one into place.
Have all the old pieces been removed? Should pop into place with a bit of effort, but should not be impossible. I use a long screwdriver and push from the top. Be careful, as a screwdriver can bit into / break the plastic if you are not careful.
What is the hose you took off at 7:57
Michael Bravo That's a combination of pieces... what year & engine (production code) are you working on?
Thomas EXOVCDS that hose is broken off of mine too what hose is that. 2005 gti 1.8t
Check the intercooler itself for excessive oil (at the base of the cooler).

about how long should this take with right tools in a shop?
That depends on how many things need replacing and how many things break unintentionally trying to get at all the PCV stuff. Some guys remove the intake manifold, I don't. either way 1.5 to 2hrs should be plenty of time.
Can this crank breather hose cause the engine to over heat

where did you get the hoses?
Our local parts supplier. You can order them online from a variety of vw / audi parts stores. Send them an email and ask for a complete kit... or remove only the broken pieces and order them.
Where are you located?
BC Canada.
I have Jetta GLI 1.8t, on 3500 rpm start problem, wastegate or ????
I don't know... what problem starts at 3500?
Thomas EXOVCDS Loses power as if there is no turbo
You can block off wastegate control (be careful, turbo will overboost) to check wastegate. If you have good power when it is blocked off, then look for wastegate control issue (N75 etc). Air / boost leaks, fuel restriction etc need to also be checked.
Thomas EXOVCDS I have to manually put on the air hose from the wastegate valve when air is blown wastegate opens only 1 millimeter
If it only opens 1mm, then you should not have power problems... unless you go into overboost. Any fault codes?
can a bad pcv cause misfires? cylinder 1 for me
Bad PCV will affect all cylinders... usually. Swap coils if you have individual coils.
How much does this cost to get done?
I don't handle invoicing, sorry.
ok, ok, I'm learning, I'm learning and then BAM at 2:25 wtf?..why cut tubes?..
Because they were old vacuum hoses... they got replaced with new hoses.
