Story is so bad
Every moment of MGR is just the rule of cool the video game.
RULES OF NATURE
I need to replay metal gear
Every character is the rule of cool
Standing here I realized this
I literally just murdered sundowner for the third time
Modern doom lore goes kinda crazy. It went from "demons killed my rabbit and home" to "demons killed my rabbit and home, and so i started an interdimensional war with hell, became the king of another civilization, and killed GOD!"
Hence: Rule of Cool.
@@aidancalfee2634 you see, they wrote the game by doing the rule of cool then writing around it. So fans who care see why and fans who dont can ignore it.
@@aidancalfee2634
Yea but you don't have to read ANY of it, turn off ur pickup notifications and you'll play the game the exact same, rip and tear, the story is just another excuse to kill more demons.
this is how stupid nudoom is
I like the old doom guy better, he was a cackling mad man that you werent supposed to take seriously but the new tries way too hard
The doom series is *the* definition of the rule cool. in the game you're a fucking marine that's plowing through hoardes of demons carrying like 8 heavy duty weapons in your pockets while moving at supersonic speeds. dear lord.
yeah and in the newer ones you are God slaying (not even kidding with the God slaying part) Marine with Divine powers plowing through different dimensions without giving a fuck

I truely understood the definition of cool when i saw Raiden stop a building sized blade that's wielded by a giant Metal Gear and then proceeding to cut it in half all while Rules of Nature soundtrack is being played in the background
and then you got schooled by the living and breathing rule of cool that is jetstream sam
Fun fact, that building sized sword was able to be used for Zandatsu. A technique that is fast enough to cut through most things in milliseconds. Raiden used a blade larger than a building to cut through a robot of the same size in a near instant in real time.
After DMC5 was announced, my very first thought was,
“Damn, I guess it’s been a million years.”
a thumbnail that I *had* to click
Okay, now I want to find the rule of cool in something like architecture
lmfao
Flying Buttresses, that is all
You know what could be even better? Finding the rule of cool in healthcare 😎 especially if it's surgery
Imma just say towers existing purely for the sake of being tall to flex on other cities is pretty rule of cool to me. Those weird buildings that could be rectangles but the architect was like nah, lets twist it around a bit. There's plenty of buildings that do weird crap just cause its cool.
Oh boy, wait till you find out about gothic architecture! They were rule of cooling shit in the middle ages!
5:55 the thing is, he IS the embodiment of rule of cool. He already died like, 5 times, and he's back again and no one complais because he's cool.

And then the Master Chief said:"I need a weapon" and the whole room went crazy.
What I like about Halo's rule of cool, especially Halo 2, which is my favourite, is that it inspires hope: Chief's coolness gives a sense of safety
Your honour, I was simply applying the ‘rule of cool’
Metal Gear Solid plays the rule of cool so hard through the whole franchise with MGR diving head first into it and not stopping.
A line from penguinz0 from his playthrough is the perfect summary of it, "Every line in this game should sound cringey, but in actual context, it sounds so cool"
Then There's Max0r's videos of it where it's two long shitpost videos parodying the game it yet it still has to tell us when he uses actual game dialogue because the game is just that goofy and cool.
Devil may cry is the total opposite of “cute girls doing cute things”
It’s literal cool men doing cool things.
I'm only gonna say "This"

Opposite of this would be "ugly boys not doing ugly things"

Noble 6 was actually wearing a suit for re entry. I thought he just survived the fall from orbit for years, but I replayed it recently and he has a jet pack thing. That’s also why he’s the only one who survived
He was wearing a Re-entry pack which is also where he got the pistol from.
And he looked pretty shaken by it as he was limping away from the landing site.
Makes me think, I like a rule o' coolio moment better if it's paired with something beforehand or after that explains it. An example of the former is if the character got some sort of power up that allowed them to act above their usual abilities for that moment, and an example of the latter is the character is weakened by the exertion or pays some sort of price for it.
The Halo Reach moment is a fair example, with the power up being 6 was equipped with a re entry module or whatever and the price was he looked injured when he landed. It would be better if there was more gameplay involved with both aspects but it's more than adequate.
The games are kind of shaky with the logic of fall damage. Master Chief fell down from the sky and his armor lock saved him - this was before armor Lock was an actual ability though, implying that all Spartans IIs can lock their armor
@@shrimpfriedrice3929 Sure, but Master Chief didn't have an external armor lock module with him. He was just on a ForeRunner ship. You think they're just going to have some of those laying about? No, it's integral within his armor.
Even had bungee thought of implementing armor abilities by then he wouldn't have one
Actually, Kill La Kill is defined by the dramatic acid usage of the entire studio behind it.

I feel like the 'spice' that makes "Rule of Cool" work is 'stakes'.
Cool for the sake of cool is always uncool, but stakes being involved helps provide a motivation as to 'why' something is cool. The reason why most people find skateboard tricks 'cool', is because the stakes are that if you fail the trick, you literally fall down, suffering an unknown amount of injury in the process. The skill needed to perform the tricks with as little risk as possible is what helps solidify coolness.
Watching someone do incredible feats in games like Doom Eternal, Devil May Cry, etc. is cool, because you understand that the stakes involve you not only possibly dying due to a lack of skill, but also looking 'stupid', which ... let's be real, is a fate worse than death. :C
The Rule of Cool also comes into play for Serious Sam, I think. A dude without armor in a t-shirt and jeans takes on an entire alien army by himself? Yeah, right, right? But goddamn is it cool to feel like a one-man army with a massive array of unrealistically destructive holdable guns and weapons
In AC4 Blackflag, I'd go and raid a fort, just so that when I raid the fort I could walk like a badass amongst the fight, and then shoot my 4 pistol like a badass, and walk again amongst the ruble and battle to the commander HQ to kill him, not run, walk, 2 blade walking is cool
OMG bro i love AC4 i played it a lot some 5 years ago, now that i think about it i may play it again sometime
dude you get to be a pirate and assassin. that itself is pretty much a rule of cool
Stranger of Paradise is actually amazing and very self aware, which is weird coming from Tetsuya Nomura
That's honestly good to hear and gives me hope for kingdom hearts 4.
Less Nomura, more the localizers lol. There's a reason English speaking fans like it, while Japanese fans hate it, and that's because in Japanese they tried to play everything 10)% straight and serious.
@@gunnarschlichting9886 localization more like official abridged version
@@gunnarschlichting9886 Nomura will never once think of putting "bullshit" *blasts linking park* in his game. The localizers knew how dumb the game is and took their funny spin on it. Chads.
Just the Slayer himself, not even the entire game franchise, is already the rule of cool.
He's as strong as the "gods" cause why not?
He's annihilating, cqc-ing, executing & purging demons cause WHY NOT?
He did survive being in hell yeah, but he got the power of gods before eternal started so that’s why

You can definitely play DMC5 as "Cool Rule May Cry" and it definitely isn't a visual novel series like Zero Escape where I'll feel justified in calling out skippers, but still.
DMC5 hits different without context from 1, 3 and 4. MGR is a similar story I'm sure, but at least presents itself as fairly detached with in game codex to cover some gaps. DMC5 actually pulls from the anime, manga and novels too when the other games didn't give them too much attention.
DmC ironically is far above average for an action game (narrative and style isn't too good though) even if part of it comes from copying and misunderstanding DMC's strengths. Still it was fine before the Definitive Edition and mods took DmC further. Now I think it shouldn't have been a DMC or delayed the series for over 10 years, but it is far from bad.
Basically rule of cool works the best in action games where writing and consistance don't really matter too much but in RPGs where lore and writing is the key it doesn't work nearly as well as devs think it does and it just makes fans annoyed with constant changes to the lore just to have cool shit added into it.
The halo cutscenes looks so good on remastered graphics
Sonic : say something good about me
Stryxo: no lol
The rule of cool is something of a reminder about the entirety of fictional media: It's art. It's meant to be a momentary escape from reality, not something hyper realistic at all times and at all costs. The single most important thing is that it's entertaining, even if it needs to not make sense realistically to accomplish that.
Just wanted to say that i've seen examples of the rule of cool being used without breaking the logic of the universe and it is definetly the best option you can have
Learned this from the coolest guy i know:
Rule 1: dont ever try to be cool
Rule 2: entertain yourself, while doing your best to not offend others
Rule 3: be friendly
subbed after reading the channel description, that’s a noble goal
Another underrated series that lives by the rule of cool: Darksiders.
1:38 in the level "Quarantine Zone" you can see the In Amber Clad hovering low above the Library. It's not far fetched to imagine a pelican was boarded by the flood and flown up to the ship, where the flood took the ship. Still cool but not exactly requiring a level of suspension of disbelief above the basic premise of the series.
Don’t you even hear that over the radio? I swear the game directly addressed the infestation of the In Amber Clad.
That “straight ass” line earned my sub be proud of that one bro
Gusty Garden Galaxy is my favorite mario song and the intro nailed it. good vid
5:45 I love you Stryxo. You just introduced me to my new favorite workout song.
Strange as a paradise is a masterpiece. Dunkys video convince me of that
I appreciate rule o cool moments better when they're contextualized in some way beforehand or after.
An example of beforehand is if the character got some sort of power up or anything that explains them being able to act above their abilities, and an example of something happening afterwards is that said power up coming at a price, such as the sacrifice of another character or it was a one shot thing that had to be used in an emergency or simply show the cool character being really weak and exhausted after the cool act.
Story wise this would help increase stakes if a sacrifice or something similar was involved and gameplay wise it allows for a fun moment and an explanation of why the MC can't do cool stuff like that all the time.
Bro I legitimately would love this guy to do more in depth video essay style videos.
Honestly, when I think rule of cool the first thing that inmediately comes to my mind is Gurren Lagann. The rule of cool is LITERALLY part of the world and story as a fundamental force and it's absolutely amazing
That is quite literally the greatest thumbnail I have ever seen, and with god as my witness I swear that is the truth
DMC wasn't made by the same dude who made Bayonetta or Okami, he merely did the first game, sure he planted the seed and the concept and whatever, but Itsuno is who made DMC what it is today!
This miiiiiight just be the best thumbnail I've ever seen
Fair enough I agree with that first line
I now know that rules are very cool, thank you space dog dude.
That thumbnail is Sus
It's Cum
This is the first video I’ve seen and “honestly how do you not have more subs” is all I can say
Rule of cool often is abused by Tabletop RPG players when they want to do something against the rules (typically because what they want is super overpowered or just not fair) and they justify their desires by saying "C'mon DM, it's the rule of cool. Let me do the thing."
To be fair, sometimes they are right and it would be way more fun to do the cool thing.
I usually don't watch video essays, but this thumbnail got me.
MAN your videos are good, I love video games and I'm trying to start an indie game company and getting your takes on such specific aspects helps me learn about stuff I hadn't even thought of. Definitely got a sub out of me
one punch man is such a good example for the rule of cool, genos a hero who has some of the coolest moves and fighting animation out of any anime ive seen, but he always losses as hes just not yet powerful enough to defeat the villain. He strives to become stronger and cooler (somehow) but his motivation to live up and finally sort of defeat a villain really sets the motion of the rule of cool, but also harks it back to a person just trying to do better in life.
I think a key thing to make the "rule of cool" that much better is to ground a character, make them be relatable, or have major flaws. Then allow the rule to aid those flaws and improve the character, one punch man as an example again can one shot ANYTHING, (some complications) but hes annoyed that he dosent have an opponent that would be anywhere near close enough strong/powerful to fight him. his rule of cool aids him in that it flaws his character and sets him as a person who wants to enjoy a fight once again, but hes just too powerful.
That's like.. The hardest hitting thumbnail I've ever seen

Rule of Cool first, then Back-build logic, repeat. Not a bad strat.

This is so important because cool is also fun and thats what games are supposed to be.
Noble 6 had a re-entry pack on his back when he fell to reach, you can even see it on his back when Jorge picks him up. It's also what he takes the magnum from in the following cutscene i think
Beautifully put together bro. When you showed the Vergil storm video I was screaming on the Inside! I really like the difficulty of Devil May Cry just like DOOM and while its over the top, you have to embody the difficulty to be able to play the game.
I literally just clicked on this because Doomguy standing in a red screen in front of the letters C U M was just too much to pass up. It immediately made me think that he gets off on killing demons and I'll watch this simply because you put that idea in my head lmao

An appreciation of the rule of cool is an acquired taste if you ask me. I used to think Metal Gear Rising was lame for example, until I watched Super Best Friends play it(back when they were still posting, RIP) and the way they spoke about the game, and it just opened up my eyes to the whole idea that sometimes, you just want cool shit to happen cuz its fucking cool and memorable.
MGR is chalk-full of moments that are just there to be cool as fuck, especially the entire last boss fight. The new Doom lore is also just basically that. The entire first game(that being 2016) is spent genociding Hell AGAIN while you occasionally listen to the talking magic WARNING stones that are literally placed throughout Hell to remind demons about the Doom Slayer and how they should prevent him from awakening again AT ANY COST cuz he is so strong he killed a skyscraper sized demon on his own, who's corpse you literally visit at one point and you enter the level THROUGH IT'S ROTTING MOUTH.
And yes, that scene in Halo 2 with the bomb is the quintessential rule of cool moment. The dialogue, the pacing, the OST, the visuals, especially in H2A are just 👌👌👌
That moment in DMC gives me chills every time, its the epitomy of rule of cool
