Lots of things was expected of Hamsalekha (from an Ardent KFI supporter's point of view, for a normal music lover he has done enough with his great songs!) - because he was the first composer from Karnataka/Kannada origin who made big name in Kannada film music with significant knowledge of ground realities. He could have changed a long of things/problems in Kannada film music world like bringing Local Singers to mainstream, bridging & bringing Kannada folk & light music culture to focus, harikatha saara, and various other great things in Karnataka, because Karnataka Classical music (or Carnatic Music as they call) has been hijacked by other Southern States & mastered them presently, having claims & hold on them (using lyrics as just tool & emphasizing on Music. Even Purandara dasa Kannada poems are just tools for them!), it was high time Hamsalekha uplifted other form of musics in Kannada & showed to the world what we are capable of and what all treasure is there in this land! I am disappointed about it!

Manjula's voice is sometimes definitely False Voice.
    P Susheela's voice is immaculate

Seriously? Then how is Amy manjuLa good at using that particular expression(false voice) only in octaves..
She should probably listen to her rendition of "soorya Chandra" in this clip and assess how shaky and imperfect the notes are.. If she was a good singer as portrayed here, she'd have become as famous as K s chitra with 6 national awards..

Did you hear the original song sung by her at that time? How can you judge someone after crossing 55 years? Is SPB singing same way now (or after 50 years for that matter - live, not in the studio!) What if someone took national awards? C Ashwath is not known outside Karnataka, does it make him inferior? Further... Raj didn't get any national award for acting, so he is an average actor of India is it? Unfortunately our own Kannadigas don't want to project their talents to higher levels and live in the inferiority complex. I can point out umpteen mistakes in your Chitramma's actual songs sung for films after several takes!

Soorya chandra appears as if sung by Vani Jayaram, while most people felt that "Manadase hakkiyaagi" (NMH) is sung by Chitra, her voice is already close to S.Janaki and possesses variations as Janaki does. She has also sung one step (several steps) ahead of LR Eshwari! What more you want? You really can't say that it is she who has sung all her songs, because she hears different from one song to the other! That's why people know her only from her trademark Malashree mass songs! Just hear "Nanna ninna pallavi" (No.1 Movie), she looks completely different! One of the most vibrant singer the land has produced (she is actually a female version of SPB, should have made name like that at south/national level) and you don't want to accept that!

Madhu P Jadhav yes I have heard the original version.. I would never ever be foolish enough to compare this lady to janaki amma, chitramma or vani jayaram..
It's like looking at a housefly and saying "oh!! this fly is as big as a mammoth"..
Vani jayaram - 3 national awards (well established singer in 11 languages)
S janaki - 4 national awards (has sung 40000+ songs in over 15 languages)
Chitra -6 national awards (highest national award won by any singer matching her to spb)
There is no comparison.. It would be appropriate to compare this lady to singers like nanditha, anuradha Bhat etc...

Madhu P Jadhav first of all I don't want to make any comments on C Ashwath or Dr. Raj.. It's waste of time..
And talking about chitra's mistakes, try to list them let's healthily analyse.. And my judgement will be based on my 20+ years of experience in carnatic classical music and film music in various languages..
She has sung highest number of songs for AR Rahman..
This lady is not even 1% match to her experience in the industry or her talent or personality or humility or humbleness..

Well Film music is not about expertise in Classical music. 95% (or even 99.99% at present) film songs are far from Classical Music. Even in 1970s, 1980s the classical requirement was at the most 20 to 30%. The reason is films were supposed to get closer to common people. So it is the expression and bhaava that presides/takes the front seat in film songs! In fact if I am not wrong both S Janaki and SPB didn't had academic classical study before entering the film industry! That is why in Karnataka there is a separate section called "light music" which emphasizes on this "Bhaava" and utmost interest is given to "lyrics". It is supposed to form the bridge between Classical Music and film songs, but it was never utilized this way, and it is discarded by the purists! Because at the end of it, films, film songs are supposed to convey the lyrics to the listener in a convincing manner! It is not about getting any accolades from classical connoisseurs! (the awards in your sense) That is why I felt Mr.Hariharan (I guess he is one of the TOP classical connoisseur in your world!) sort of raped Ravivarmana remake song in one of the Upendra movie, compared to the shuddha bhaava in the original song rendered by PBS! Hatsoff to PBS for learning the language thoroughly to an extent of writing poems in that language, before singing the song in that language! Only then the songs can reach the listeners. This trend was continued by SPB also who also emphasized on expressions. If Chitra, Hariharan kind of singers had sung Kannada songs during 70s & 80s I am sure it would have not reached any Karnataka mass, and the blame would have gone to the composers/lyricists/directors and the taste of Kannadigas & the inability of Kannada language, market, and what not! (I guess this is the reason why so many people had complaints with Dr.Raj singing songs, even though he came up with TOP-notch efforts in the toughest classical compositions!) What I am trying to tell here is if people like Manjula Gururaj, C Ashwath, etc, had given the same chance and exposure like S.Janaki, SPB, then they would have in fact went on to grow in the same stature. I believe in that, you may not - that's your opinion. There are some real hard workers in Classical music like Rajkumar Bharathi who never got their due attention (not even known as much as Manjula Gururaj! He is an ant/mosquito/amoeba in your terminology probably), likewise there are many who may not even have got chance to sing any film song or actually get the attention of mass!
Anyway I said film music is not meant for expertise in Classical Music. Chitra, Hariharan, etc, may have sung well in Tamil & other languages, I never denied that. Maybe they are closer to those languages and the nativity (actually they are serious about those languages & market!) But definitely they are weak when it comes to Kannada and the expressions in lyrics, it appears robotic most of the time and also absurd in places (Sakkareya maathu ond helu mellage - in Shivasainya song! Do you know what helu mellage means in Kannada, the lower "l" ? This song was such a big joke during my college days among my friends bringing unintentional fun!) eLu shiva eLu shiva (Haalunda thavaru) is supposed to be a song of enthusiasm of life (according to lyrics), but she turned it into an intense never-ending pathos with her screeching voice! She may have sung good songs here & there, I am not too harsh & ignorant as you are with Manjula! But certainly it was not required to treat her as main singer during 90s especially when that was the era when the industry was opening to innovations with several singers (like what ARR was doing in Tamil/Hindi) That was the ideal time to explore the local talents. Hamsalekha was the main culprit there (with all due respect to his talent in lyrics & music, he was a dud when it comes to using resources). Prema Loka was not a film which required over-matured SPB & S Janaki kind of singers! That was the time to be innovative, those songs did not require classical expertise or the genius of those singers (Of course those two singers came up with brutal performances no doubt in that, but that was not the kind of challenge for their caliber, it was a piece of cake for them! But Hamsalekha wanted to play safe) In fact 95% of Hamsalekha's songs are very casual, simple & easy style! It really does not require/demand any classical expertise. It is understandable to go with seasoned singers for Ilayaraja/Rajan-Nagendra kind of compositions, but certainly not Hamsalekha especially when ARR who also comes up with complicated compositions but still works with talented rookies, that is how industry grows! The problem is the way Kannadigas develop inferior complex about themselves and how they promote others... Hamsalekha would have made Karnataka folk & light music culture as the gateway to Kannada film music & made it richer! But he didn't! Why he tells that if Manjula is there, then his payment from producer is guaranteed? It is because the burden on the budget goes down so much (Payment to these foreign singers, their travel expenses, boarding, lodging, assistants, studio duration, etc! In fact most of these local singers don't even require a track singer!) The saved money can be utilized for other important aspects of filmmaking (as Karnataka Market is small as claimed by many! How will it grow after all if we have all these constraints?)
By looking at your name I thought you are from Bangalore, but probably it seems you are a Tamilian residing in Bangalore practicing Classical Music! If you are not interested in reading my long post, then leave it, because I am interested in the whole upliftment of the Kannada industry rather than the knowledge/practice of any particular form of music! Film industry is a commercial medium and utmost importance has to be given in utilizing the available resources... I won't say that Manjula Gururaj can compete with Chitra or anybody in a classical concert, but certainly she will comfortably outshine her in expression based songs like Olage seridare gundu... And I know very much that this is not going to bring any awards, but who cares! It gave almost 500 days running movie to satisfy the so called small market Kannada crowd! That is what people come to watch film for... Hence this is (singers like Chitra) are one of the reason why KFI's market went down during 90s, 00s...
