I was wondering about this, too. Powder-based items are usually safe to keep using (I use an alcohol spray on mine to kill bacteria), but the lipsticks can cause skin problems if they’re too old.
I’m amazed at the amount of product at the bottom of the lipstick casing, when you think it’s done, it’s really not. I think it’s worth buying one of those scrapers and a small empty cosmetics pot to decant it and still use.

The cold, from chilling in the fridge, helps the lipstick to contract juuuuust enough to be able to slide it from one container to the other. It's also a really easy way to clean candle holders, empty candle jars, etc. Just freeze them and the wax pops out.
