- Опубліковано 15 тра 2024
- The Battle of Plymouth unfolded amidst the First Anglo-Dutch War on 16 August 1652, when General-at-Sea George Ayscue of the Commonwealth of England confronted Vice-Commodore Michiel de Ruyter's Dutch Republic convoy. They clashed off the coast of Sussex. Ayscue, commanding a fleet of 47 vessels, aimed to intercept the convoy, but De Ruyter, leading 31 ships, skillfully maneuvered, forcing Ayscue's avoidance.

📜Thanks to the incredibly talented instagram.com/bobby.donald/ for helping out with the ship rapids!
I sincerely hope you are planning on making a series on the Anglo Dutch wars, some truly underappreciated but very important events in history!
That's the plan!
Great to hear it!
Mooi!
Agree 👍🏽
I completely agree with you on that because like without the Anglo Dutch wars there wouldn’t have been great Admirals like Michiel de Ruyter and also without the Anglo Dutch wars the area of the United States where I live wouldn’t have been under English control but instead Dutch and the area of the United States that I live in at the time of the Anglo Dutch wars was called New Netherland and just saying but I can’t wait to see videos on the 4th Anglo Dutch war since I know nothing about it.
De Ruyter was one of the best admirals in history. He is so underrated.
Great video!
I wouldn't say he's underrated. From what I've seen he'd always rated top 3 in history by historians and often as the very best to ever have lived
@@mkooij yes, but there is no videos about him on UA-cam
@@user-pg9qb3wy7s ah yes then I agree
atleast the made a good movie about him, and yes he is underrated, @@user-pg9qb3wy7s
@@user-pg9qb3wy7snot in English...yet
YES! Naval battles! You will do an incredible job as always! Olease consider Octavian and agrippas ultimate triumph over anthony and cleopatra: the battle of actium
Crazy how few people know of admiral De Ruyter.
Just thought I'd say that the animations of that naval battle are some of the best I've ever seen in any naval battle documentary/history video on youtube.
Thank you, I appreciate it!
This is great! No one has covered these wars on You Tube to my knowledge. It would be great to see a video on each battle. I consider these to be the most interesting naval battles of the age of sail, because they were the most evenly-matched, with many able commanders on both sides.
Awesome topic, naval battles need more attention for sure! Pls continue this series.
This video was awesome. I love this channel. The narration, the way the battle's are animated, the research. Top notch.
So nice to see some naval battles from the age of sail! Looking forward for more of these! Great job as always!
Have been waiting for this to be covered. Thanks! 🤝
Great video! it was exciting and the visual lay out was beautiful. Glad to see De Ruyter get some love.
nobody seem to mention it, but this 8:07 is a critical moment of the battle, in a way that De Ruyter's Flagship managed to get behind Ayscue's Flagship, where De Ruyter can launch devastating attack on the stern(back) of Ayscue's, which is not only a huge target with important "assets"(pun intended. Sorry, not sorry) on it(chamber of captain is there), the cannonballs can pierce through the length of the ship, damaging anything it passes through the stern to the bow(front). not to mention De Ruyter can shoot the stern of the ships on the other side.
Subbed, extremely well done and easily competes with the production levels we see with top historical youtubers.
Another incredible video great work
This is good! More videos about Anglo-Dutch naval Wars plz!
Thanks!
Amazing video as always!
A learned, detailed enough, sincere work. Congratulations. Glad to be subscribed.
Excellent history, above the medium wide quest for video game graphics, and much appreciated. You haven’t finished the Austrian- Prussian War without Koniggratz.
Awesome video HoH ❤
Another incredible historical coverage video about naval & naval trade competition between England 🇬🇧 and Netherlands 🇳🇱 in left 17th century on England channel. Thank you 🙏 ( house of history) channel for sharing this wonderful historical coverage video
Much appreciated!
VERY GOOD WORK, AS USUAL.
Would be great to see more video's on this topic
I hope we see more video's on this war. It sounds quite interesting.
Amazing as usual
This channel is underrated.
Great to see early modern naval warfare getting the spotlight.
Yeeeesss, love seeing and learning about this part of history! I've got a tremendeous book on de Ruyter, it's huge with beautiful prints. The Dutch history of the 2nd part of 17th century is so fascinating and the impact of the Ruyter definitely forms a great base for storytelling
What's the book called? I've been looking for some good sources!
@@HoH Not quite sure how good of a source it is. It's published in 1942, by a dodgy (collaborator) publisher and not much known of the author either. It seems it may have been work to kind of glorify the past under nazi occupation? Nevertheless I find it impressive and informative. It's a Dutch book called: Michiel de Ruyter, 1607-1676, : een heldenleven in plichtsvervulling voor het vaderland by N.Aartsma. Published by Holle & co
Thanks so much, I'll have a look! @@dutchrobb
Very interesting. Hadn't heard of this. Thank you.
Glad you enjoyed it!
Just discovered your channel, love it. I hope you will make a video about the 80 year war between Spain and the Netherlands.
This was a great video in a little known conflict
Really interesting nice work, it would be nice to see such battles as Sheveningen, Four day´s battle, Solebay or Texel, gratings from Spain!
Love these
I absolutely love your videos and especially your narration. You could narrate paint drying in a way that would keep me entertained for hours, lol.
Make this a series please
Note that Douwe Aukes was pecked to be the admiral of the Frisian fleet, but went to the VOC instead.
Excellent!
Make a series on admiral Yi Sun-sin
That's a great idea.
Please do Jules Brunet and the Boshin War!!! That would be so awesome to see it narrated.
I hope you'll cover more of de Ruyter's life. He really should be better known.
Great video.
But when are you going to finish the German-Austrian war series?
good video
Hi mate, lovely video. May I know the sources that you used? I would love to read more about De Ruyter (I have only seen the film). There is also a book about the 4 Days Battles F. L. Fox but it is too difficult for me 😂
You could try the Anglo-Dutch Wars of the Seventeenth Century by J. Jones, but that is also complex. Sadly, there are not many books covering these wars in English.
I really like your depictions of naval battles, would be delighted for more. Also, idk if it’s just me but the audio seemed quite weak on my end.
Thanks! About the audio: I don't notice it but it could very well be.
Agreed, the audio could be tweaked. Lower volume on the music, please. It drowns out the narration.@@HoH
A normal Empire Total War naval battle.
age of sail battles have interesting terms that I have to learn, such as weather gauge and chain shots, also forgot that fire ships set themselves on fire like suicide ships, was thinking about Greek fire....
Naval warfare is an undercovered aspect of military history. I'm happy for my Dutch neighbours that you chose their national hero, admiraal Michiel de Ruyter. I'm not sure if you've ever seen the movie about him, Admiral (in English). Worth a watch!
I saw the movie. Was a lot of self-importance and melodrama tbh. Seems like they poured a lot of money into it but it mainly served as nationalist propaganda rather than be an interesting account on De Ruyter or the anglo-dutch wars. I learned more from this 10 min video than I did from the movie. Great job, house of history.
@@Thomas_Name is it any different from other movies about 'national heroes'?
Still it was not that bad of a movie and it made many people familiar with a historical character and capable admiral that was to most a forgotten footnote in history. I'm Belgian and I never heard about him before I saw the movie.
@@Thomas_Namelike the Brits don’t make movies which are doubtful with the truth, like every movie with Montgomery, who was the worst commander in WW2, even so bad that the Germans were happy he wasn’t on their side.
Frank Lammers plays the role of De Rutter extremely well.
What happened to Tromp's fleet?
how did you make the maps? really good quality
What could you recommend for further reading on anglo-dutch relations in 17th-18th century?
Hi House of History 💙
Would you guys continue the austro prussian war since I as many other would love you guys do the Franco Prussian War.
Cheers 💙
great video can I ask about how you made the effect of the trail of water that comes at the end of the ship ? is it have a name in after effect ?
It's a stack of several effects. Turbulent displace etc.
@@HoH thanks 👍
8:02 Interesting that aftet that era, sea-battles had to be fought strictly in line until the napoleonic wars broke again with this trafitions. But de Ruyter already had the "Nelson touch" it seems.
I was wondering but can you do a series on the northern wars and I am asking because while the great northern war gets the most attention the wars that happened before it are still interesting as these wars show how Sweden became an empire by acquiring what is today part of the nations of Estonia 🇪🇪 and Latvia 🇱🇻 and it also saw the Dutch expand their territory in North America by gaining what the Swedish called new Sweden which comprised of the modern us states of Delaware, Maryland, Pennsylvania and New Jersey and expanded their influence up to the states of New York and Connecticut and link up with their territory up the Hudson River at fort Nassau and the wars also saw the duchy of Prussia become a sovereign state and the cession of most of Swedish Pomerania east of the Oder River to the nation of Brandenburg Prussia and lastly the northern wars would see the end of the Swedish empire.
We lost most sea battles against the Brits (they just had more and bigger war ships, while we focused on trade), but they will never forget the Raid on the Medway, it’s still their worst loss. It’s also the real birth of the Marines, till then they were fighting on the ships, but now they were used as a landing party and did an awesome job.
Not true, the first war was a draw, the second a resounding Dutch victory (Medway!), the third a tactical draw but strategic Dutch win, as an invasion was averted. Only the fourth, much later, was en English victory and sealed the succession of the Dutch by the English as most powerful naval power in Europe.
@@martijnb5887 The first was an english win.
Second was a dutch win but only because england went bankrupt because of the natural disasters like the great fire of london 1666, and great plague of 1667.
The following financial constraints meant that there wasnt enough money to put the fleet to sea and as a result were attacked while in their docks by the Dutch.
And the 3rd counts as a draw because england switched sides and declared war on france.
And 4th as you already know a crushing english victory
Good video.
I did find a mistake in your video. You said: "the English civil war from 1642 to 1649" but Posted 1642 to 1651 in the video. 0:54
You might want to do a correction.
Either date can be seen as the end of the civil war. I was too lazy to alter the narration in post-production to say 49 or 51. The video took ages to create and I figured I'd use text to add the other date.😅
@@HoH Ok, just remember that first impressions are lasting impressions.
I like and enjoyed the video, though you seem to pretty much be reading the wikipedia page of the battle...
There is a very good movie about Michael de Ruyter with the same title.
Another very interesting video as always. However I am still waiting with bated breathe for the final Austro Prussian battle; Königgratze (?). We LOVE us some more Bismark. The good Machiaveliian whose methods (he never forgot the risks of war) were indeed excused by the results. His later warnings about the dangers of wars getting out of hand and the need for German Russian raprochement were tragically ignored (see WW I) by the rather stupid Kaiser Wilhelm II.
The forgotten battles, Engand vs. The Dutch.
This is awesome!
If you would like some help pronouncing dutch names, feel free to send me a message.
Can't wait for the next video!
I really hope the wars between Denmark-Norway and Sweeden will get some serious attention. Its the countries in europ who are in the top battling each other. There has been many kingdoms and Duchies involved on both sides. And it has shaped a lot of nothern europe. And there is periods of peace and alliances too.

facing de Ruijter, I think the English commander faced a raw deal. He is up there with nelson and Yi Sun-sin . One of the most able Admirals in human history
Crazy how the anglo dutch wars arent well known. The biggest naval battles were fought in these conflicts
So how the Austrians doing, it's been a while 🤔😁
Another great video 👍
Thanks! It's still in production, taking quite some time.
@@HoH Excellent thanks for all your awesome work 👍
They are still fighting their sea battles with the Swiss, don’t know who is winning, but I heard it’s a close call! 😉
@@joostprins3381 Yes the Swiss had a ferocious navy back in the day terrorizing the Mediterranean. To bad nobody ever does any videos on them 😔😁
Can't wait till you cover the russo Japanese war
Any news about the austro prussian war ?
Still in production!
can u do the guerra de Castas in Mexico, is in the XIX Century in Mexico when the Mayas revolt against the Newly Form Mexican and they form there on Nation on the Yucatan Peninsula, until they lost and Mexico recover the Yucatan Peninsula from the Revel Mayas of Mexico
I’ve been writing a song about the house of Orange and I can’t find anything that rhymes with it…
Where are the German unification vids?😭
Love to hear the English saying it was a tactical draw. Their losses were tenfold, the English fled the scene. They failed to get the Dutch merchants. But still a defeat? Never!
I always knew my Empire TW naval tactics were based in history.
pronounciation of texel= tessel
I still have nightmares from the TV show Admiral. I'm afraid this will make them worse.
1:36 is this AI art why are the faces messed up lol
ayscue probably did nothing wrong, he was given a stronger fleet but if it is as described he couldn't rely on mercenaries fighting for a wage or loot to risk more than they thought to gain whilst deruyter did have motivated sailors that fought a battle for survival and to protect their merchant marine
2:34 Jack Nicholson?
For one journey… yeah right.. 🤣😂😂😂
Yo... Where's the guy... Who who started and voiced and edited and directed... this channel? Is he dead?
Still me, but I invested to professionalise the channel throughout the years. More animation, better narration etc.
Why don't we see you ? Are you OK ?
Battle of the Line was invented later!! braking the line wassent a thing yet.
De Ruyter was one of the first to implement battle line tactics by using flag signals.
Wrong, Tromp employed it already in 1639 to destroy on of the Spanish Armada's.
De Ruyter is the goat
!!
当谁有下一个七年的战争视频
I liked the video very much. But it is really annoying that you, as a Dutchman, refuse to say the Dutch names correctly, but turn them into some strange English version of those names. You seem to do this in multiple of your videos and I don't understand why. It is so incredibly unnecessary and it makes a mockery of the people who's names you refuse to pronounce correctly. I would understand and totally accept it if you were not from The Netherlands. But as you are Dutch, please stop saying the Dutch names with some made up English pronunciation.
while i like the use of ai images, if you look closely at them they look extremely weird
it's cyrus day
Just call it the channel. Saying the English Channel over and over sounds clunky.
