  • Boxing is not a traditional martial art!! Here I will explain why Boxing is different, and you could even make the argument MMA, has-spawned into its own category with a heavier overtone of sport, leaving behind the art aspect of the traditional background of Martial Arts. I want to hear what you think in the comment section. Why are you believe Boxing is or is not a martial art?
As always, thank you for watching your feedback is greatly appreciated!!

Coach my father was a boxer and I came up under boxing. I'm now an active muay thai boxer & have been for quite some time. I still practice boxing because it's part of muay thai. Boxing is definitely a gentlemen's sport. In my opinion boxing is more elusive and practical. Boxing isn't a form of martial arts but it is a combat sport. Growing up I've seen and heard of a lot of boxers whipping martial artists asses, PAUSE! But it's a fact. No disrespect towards any martial artist or any martial art form but my preference is the sweet science & the science of 8 limbs!!!🥊🥊🐅🐘💪🏽💪🏽💯💯💯

@@FirstLast-cb7sv There's no safe martial art, everyone of them has flaws. I would use Jiu-Jitsu and Wrestling against a boxer. But dangerous people usually have other dangerous people with them. Run, have a weapon, stay out of a dark alley, walk away from the argument. You have to have a mixture of different styles. A MMA fighter will do good in a street fight but the person might have a gun, be too big, and multiple attackers. And just hope for the best or avoid try avoid the entire situation. I jumped in a double attack, even if I knew Jiu Jitsu then, they would still beat me. During the attack, I was able to run away but took damage. If I stayed and try to fight them more, I might not be alive.

I am learn variety martial arts (silat, Muay Thai, karate, taekwondo, BJJ, judo, boxing, wing Chun). I keep what work for me. Not all martial arts perfect but compliment each other.
Actually, silat some part similar to BJJ. For example, Kimura lock similar to python hand lock. The more you learn, the more you appreciate.
Boxing is good. Just duck to low, you will get punch in back of head or get knee. That my advice. Do not duck to low. Except you confident don't get hit at back and knee to head.

I like that you mentioned Kata. Kata in boxing is shadowboxing. Same concept. The moves in your Kata or form (in Kung Fu) are just putting together the different techniques in the style you are learning to mimic what would be done in an actual fight. Same for shadowboxing. As far as practicality in a real fight, boxing is definitely superior in many regards simply because the techniques have a more direct line to the opponent. However, most strikes in both boxing and martial arts are similar. For example, the straight punch in Karate or Kung Fu is very similar to the jab of boxing with the difference being the jab of boxing is less rigid in practice than the straight punch. This is why Bruce Lee incorporated boxing into JKD because of that fluidity in the hand strikes of boxing. Bruce also incorporated the footwork of boxing with his main model being the late, great, Ali. Legend has it that when Bruce was challenged by a Kung Fu traditionalist who was part of a collective trying to stop Bruce from teaching Kung Fu to the masses, Bruce attacked him with a Wing Chun straight blast, which is a series of very fast, straight punches, with both hands, in rapid succession. Supposedly, the opponent kind of curled up in a standing fetal position and Bruce was unable to hit him like he wanted to and that was the end of the fight. At that point, Bruce deduced that if he knew boxing, he could have hit the opponent with hooks and uppercuts even if the opponent took that defensive stance. That was the birth of JKD. Anyway, it's my opinion that it is all martial arts but I completely understand the position that this brother is taking as well.

Boxing as a martial art is just a handy category.
Just to my limited knowledge and experience, typical martial arts haven't really changed for hundreds of years, kung fu taught today is the same as it was taught in the dark ages, same katas, same techniques etc.
I'm struggling to put into words what I mean, because there are only so many ways you can punch, but watch a championship boxing match from say the 50s, 60s or 70s, and you will see a much different fight if you compare it with today's

I agree with the fact that people do generalize boxing and put it in a giant category of martial arts again, without truly looking into what the sport is all about if they did they would see there are so many differences between traditional martial arts, and the sport of boxing the only commonality is that they are both a form of fighting, but to say every form of fighting is a martial art is way too much of a general statement, and to me is not accurate because by its structure, Boxing has no other similarities to martial arts. Other than the fact they have both evolved into businesses that teach self-defense in modern times.

I think that boxing is a martial art -- just not a "traditional" martial art. It's definitely not an Eastern/Asian/Oriental martial art but I'd still consider it a martial art (in my opinion anyway). It's definitely a combat sport and old dirty boxing was like the street defense aspect of boxing. Boxing isn't a complete martial art because it doesn't do extensive clinch work, does no ground fighting and does not teach and train weapons -- but I still consider it a martial art nonetheless -- as limited as it is it is one of the best or the best at what it does do -- and it mixes well with other martial arts (the military uses boxing in it's combatives and martial arts programs for it's soldiers and the word martial arts means "military arts" and implies that the skills taught are those that are "pertaining to warfare or combat"). Opinions may vary. I integrate boxing, kickboxing, wrestling, judo, jiu-jitsu (jujutsu/taijutsu), military combatives and weapons training into my Kudo Ryu Bujutsu martial arts school's curriculum.
Concerning martial arts belt systems -- there's a huge difference between "grade" and "rank". "Grade" is like what techniques and skills you know and possess -- whereas "rank" is how good you are at applying the techniques and skills versus other skilled and resisting opponents /groups / teams / military forces etc. Black belt is not a rank. Being the best boxer, karate fighter, wrestler, judo fighter, military, sports team etc. is a rank. Grade only shows that you have a minimum level of proficiency in a given set of technique or skill sets whereas rank shows you can apply the techniques and skills against other high level, experienced and trained and fully resisting fighters / teams / military units etc.
And one last comment about competition and competitive arts -- competitive fighting is not a "style" of martial arts -- it's a training method. In times of war, warriors are always tested in battle and often -- but in times of peace or in off-duty times competitive martial arts (boxing, wrestling, kendo, etc.) are ways of getting some battle experience in as close to real-life conditions against a fully resisting opponent (inside a rule set of course) to make training as realistic and safely and under as close to real-life situations as possible -- competitive martial arts training was originally added to martial arts training to make them more realistic (but are not "styles" of combat in and of themselves).

Thanks for your input coming from a martial arts background myself after seeing both sides of the fence I can definitely say that Boxing is a completely different animal even though again, there are many parallels they evolved in opposite directions meaning martial arts was meant for self-defense initially, and became a sport as to where Boxing was always a sport that can be used lysed for self-defense but that is not what it is intended for. Like the analogy, I use to compare a sport shooting to it’s applications in a real life scenario where you may have to hit moving targets from different distances with short reaction time that’s not a self-defense system, but it can definitely be applied at such. Boxing will only enhance other fighting styles and not detract from it.

In my mind it's a martial art going all the way back into antiquity. With it's emphasis on conditioning and real time sparring it is much more effective than a McDojo type style. In practical terms it's frightening to think what a proficient boxer could do to the average man in a street fight. Also boxing can be seen as a core art. Throw in some elbows, knees, stomps and head butts and learn to throw and sprawl and you have a fierce streetfighter. Just my 2 cents.

I respect your opinion, brother, and as I mentioned to others I used to feel the same way but truthfully there are a lot of differences between what a traditional martial art is and what boxing is. Since its inception, Boxing was never meant for self-defense. It was a combat sport meant for entertainment that eventually evolved into a form of self defense for non-competitors. And I am no historian but from what I have been taught , Boxing having started with the Sumerians as a form of entertainment and athletic display with no philosophical art/way of life overtones or belt system was a competitive sport not an art. That is one of many reasons I do not consider it a Martial art.

Serious respect to all athletes and disciplines, but boxing training can't be beat for us "average joes". Vs ju jitsu, which i feel is more popular now, you can practice effectively without damaging your back /hips and joints via padwork and technical sparring, and its one of the few disciplines that becomes effective quickly due to its initial simplicity. I played hockey in high school so I thought i knew tough training but holy hell are boxing workouts on another level...I just wish people understood how fast boxers are on their feet compared to the typical combatants in martial arts...so no, not a martial art in complexity and ranking, but gets to the point just the same!

Well, it sounds like we have a case of arguing semantics here. The term “martial art” was first used was to refer to European weapons combat. So one could deduce that “martial arts” simply means systems of fighting. So boxing is in fact, a martial art not a “traditional martial art” like Muay Thai or judo. “Traditional martial arts” encourages traditions like mandatory attires or shouting in the art’s native language

Boxing is the toughest sport of them all. You can’t be just “good” in boxing and hope to become a champion or make it to the big stages. An average Joe would have more chances to become champion in MMA if he’s good at one thing but in boxing, you better have some athleticism, backed up with skills, technique, IQ, etc. And there’s no room for mistakes in boxing.

To me, the three toughest stand-alone combat sports that require the most athleticism and conditioning are boxing, muay thai, and wrestling. But I would say wrestling is the toughest and requires the most athleticism. Terence Crawford is one of the most athletic boxers today and comes from a long line of wrestlers. Artur Beterbiev demolishes people but started off with wrestling in a country that produces some of the best wrestlers in the world. Gable Stevenson is a 265 pound wrestling beast who can do flips and handsprings. Tyson Fury is quick for a guy his size, but I wouldn't say he's as athletic as Stevenson. Also, most UFC champions come from wrestling backgrounds. Other than that, boxing is one of my favorite sports and my favorite tool is the double end bag. What do you think coach? Boxing is a martial art. The term originated in the West, not Asia, and is derived from latin "Ars" art, way or manner of doing something, (it has nothing to do with art in the sense of say, painting or dance or expressive arts, similar constructions with the word art in this sense would include things like "the art of carpentry, or "the art of warfare" and "Martialis "of or related to Mars, Roman god of war, i.e warfare and violence. It's a common misconception that martial arts were an Asian invention (they're not) and additionally the term itself predates most European contact with the Far East. All human cultures have martial arts, and boxing is one of the oldest and most effective of the many that have originated in the West, and is certainly one of the top striking arts in the world.

  • @TucoBenedicto
    @TucoBenedicto 2 місяці тому

It's funny when people argue that only traditional asian martial arts deserve the right to use the name, because the first documented use of the term in the english language is in some European manuals of sword fighting.
The term itself on a fundamental level (etymology) simply means "techniques for use in military/fighting context".
So yeah, I'm going to argue that boxing definitely qualifies. In fact, in practical terms it's arguably more effective than a lot of traditional styles.
Also, even if we are going with the age as a way to build "historical credit", boxing is one of the oldest hand-to-hand combat styles in the world, since its use was already documented in ancient Greece.

Along with Kickboxing/MT and BJJ//Wrestling/MMA. Because they have been tried, tested and documented and witnessed more than any other.
Bruce Lee was about application, the science of fighting which is why he gravitated towards Boxing and wrestling and took from those and made his his own fighting system. Most these Martial Arts and artists are still in theory mode. Sure the average Joe probably would get sonned in a confrontation from a Martial Artist. But those who train aren’t average. The problem here is nobody knows what the term "martial arts" is or where it originated. You all think it has something to do with Asian fighting styles. That term comes from English and it was in reference to sword fighting of old England. But even the original English meaning of the term, means any art of fighting, "fighting art". Not gonna break down the language factor everyone is ignorant on, but yes boxing is literally a martial art by the definition of the actual original meaning.

Martial Arts were and are not specifically for self defense. They were created for war and to kill. The basics and foundations of MA can be used for self defense, but please never ever underestimate the spirituality of the intent behind martial arts. Its original purpose and design and to incapacitate, maim, and kill opponents.
Saying Martial Arts is for self defense is like saying a Gun is for protection. A shield is for protection. A suit of armor, or leather armor is for protection.

I think boxing is a sport which is both a combat and an art form. Some people will prefer the combat side, and likes the biggest puncher and the one who can take a big punch, others enjoy the artistic side, foot movement, body position and speed to avoid being hit. I am personally on the side of the latter who sees it more as an art, and more credit should be given for good defence. My preference would be for boxing to be more like a martial art. Those who see it as mainly a fight are fine, but a big slugging encounter is less martial art. I would say that MMA has much less of an artistic side as all of the martial arts used have been watered down with mainly the fighting elements remaining, it is therefore just combat not a martial art.

My opinion changed on this after a few months in my gym. I view it more of a combat sport or combat hobby (hobby in my case since I'm a in the masters division and not doing it at an elite prize level). Boxing stresses sparring and competition (unless you're boxing for fitness) and has a lot of emphasize on being applicable in order to win. I use to think Boxing was a martial art that was more about physicality [I'm also a Kyokushin karateka and I don't see myself going back after another year or year and half due to wanting a fight or two under my belt (which I seriously believe I'm now better conditioned to spar more effectively )] instead of spirituality.

I disagree boxing is a martial art in the sense it's used in combat, as in martial arts are different methods and techniques to utilize in combat, just not an eastern asian martial art which is what you described when using kata and belt systems. Boxers are technically martial artist since they are skilled in an art of war ,just not in the asian sense.
Martial arts are not just asian,as in every culture uses them from old zulu tribes,to spartans, and knights, its just the media indoctrinated people to believe martial arts are asian men in gi, which is wrong if you are skilled in an art of war you are a marrial artist in the traditional sense.knights, samurais, gladiators, boxers, wrestlers, all skilled in an art of war whether we like it or not they're all essentially martial artist.

Only people that invested a bunch of time and money in martial arts which mostly is wasted because the majority of people teaching martial arts never competed. Well, put what they teach to use in real-time with a real world experience. Want to feel like they own everything. By putting it all under the umbrella of MARTIAL ARTS Since you mentioned soldiers and gladiators According to your philosophy then direct action assaults, CQB would also be martial arts too. Right might as well add air strikes nuclear weapons.you guys own all that too, right 😏

    • @zachariasjames819
      @zachariasjames819 3 місяці тому

@@coachv3436 technically yeah since they're all essentially doing the same thing, teaching to fight or preparing for combat armed or unarmed, how you see boxers train is the same way gladiators trained with weapons, I agree that majority of martial artist can't fight because they have a false sense of reality, I personally think boxing and wrestling is the most practical and realistic. You say it's different cause boxing compete for medals and trophies so it's different, but traditional martial art does too, taekwondo has an Olympic team just like boxing,it's just boxing more grittier and realistic which is why I chose to do it and quit taekwondo. I agree with you as far as the training being realistic but not claiming it as a martial art is not exactly right since it's one of the first martial arts along with wrestling to be used by warriors since the dawn of time, it's just society tricked people into think martial arts is just Asian power fantasies, when in fact martial arts is an umbrella term to encompass fighting styles all around the world ,it's just majority of it's Asian while the western society stuck to really just boxing and wrestling.
One more example the same way a gladiator hit a pell,is essentially the same as a boxer hitting a heavy bag, different context but both essentially training to fuck someone up,both training in an art of war, both are martial artist. I agree too most traditional martial artist can't fight because they train in impractical ways, I'd like to say they're more into the performance flashy side of martial arts than the competitive realistic side of martial arts. People just like to complicate things when really a simple jab cross can defeat majority of people.

Boxing is an effective Combat Style. Call it whatever, but a master of Boxing can adequately defend themselves in a fight. It is one of the oldest if not the oldest fighting style. I think that when most people think of boxing, they are considering the sport. But there is combat boxing that involves, deadly strikes along with elbow strikes (dirty boxing/street fighting) and kicking (52 blocks and kick boxing). Even Jeet Kun Do has elements of boxing in it. But I will admit that boxing is rarely taught for self-defense. Most of the time, you will see it as elements of another named system or taught to win the sport of boxing. But people have died in the ring for a reason.

A Martial art is really is any combat system involving muscle memory. U throw the jab 5000 times u become good at it…u throw the kick same amount of times same situation. Far as the competitive aspects of each art it becomes sport which requires less danger… u have a ref..nobody is gonna come from behind to attack you and u don’t have to factor in if your opponent is going to pull out a weapon. Now mma is mixed martial arts u can mix in what arts u deem most successful to winning a fight. So to conclude with my opinion I say boxing is a martial art and I would say one of the top martial arts because of the practicality of its science. I used to feel the same, way any fighting system would fall under the umbrella of martial art but I think that is something that philosophy has recently been accepted due to the popularity of MMA, which I also feel has moved away from what by definition is a traditional martial art. Originally the definition of martial arts were belt, oriented self-defense/philosophical way of life with heavy emphasis on traditions with from whatever it’s cultural origins were Japan/China in particular then, as civilization involved in the south, defense necessity was the less prevalent it geared towards a Sports/business model instead of being passed down from generation to generation organically. Boxing, on the other hand, since its inception was a past time for the Sumerians and was always a form of competition/entertainment that self-defense, because, as you know, with those times, there wasn’t self-defense, there was just a warfare and hand to hand combat wasn’t really an option in most cases. Also, I feel the evolution of boxing has completely moved away from the art aspect and put much more heavy emphasis on science and physical combat readiness with very little tradition and there is obviously no belt system so it is not a true martial art by definition it is a combat sport with a completely different structure and objective in my opinion 🫡
