From what I have read and observed, weight lifting can definitely be of benefit to the boxer. For example, sprinters are of course one of the most fast twitch-dominant athletes out there and they train with weights to help them become even more powerful/faster. So weight training wont necessarily decrease speed, but it has to be highly specific in order to promote fast twitch development such as the Olympic lifts and heavy functional movements such as squats, deadlift variations, shoulder presses etc. In any case, most people should worry about getting the boxing fundamentals down before worrying about weights. You have to decide on where your priorities lie. Great video as always.

It's common sense if you do resistance training that when the resistance isn't there you're going to be able to move faster. Say you carry a 50lb rucksack and wear 40lbs of body armor while road marching 12 miles then the next time you road march 12 miles with no rucksack and body armor on. You will be faster with nothing on. In fact, you might be able to run those 12 miles with ease. So yes, resistance training will make you faster in whatever you do when the resistance isn't there.
Let me tell you from experience. I lift heavy. as long as you goal is not to gain weight. Plus lifting heavy does not limit your fast muscle fiber unless you are looking to be a body builder. So lift weight and as heavy as you want
What’s happening brother, personally I prefer plyometrics and bodyweight exercises to weights although certain drills with very light weights and resistance bands are also good!
Look into contrast training, heavy lifting superset with an explosive plyometric exercise to stimulate, strength, power and speed. If you're only working on gaining strength, then yes you'll be slow because lifting heavy weight isn't typically an explosive movement. But if you get strong and then learn to use that strength with speed and power then that's the secret recipe.
There is a reason why weight classes exist tho. Weight is one of the biggest factors for Punching Power, if u have the boxing fundamentals down. Also there is an intimidation factor if you are big, which is good for Self Defense purposes.
Force = mass × velocity squared. So in reality size helps but speed is much more important if your too big not only will you be slower but often with huge bodybuilders they are too big to throw straight punches .
@bosniakslayer6614 bodybuilders are definitely too big I always look up to Tyson, Evander or Ngannou when it comes to explosive power and no homo, they look strong af
Been hit by guys who look like bodybuilders 200+lbs and been pretty much fine and also hit by guys who weigh 170lbs or lighter and been put on my ass hard and left me feeling it for a week. ( I'm not a fighter/boxer I work as a bouncer, just my opinion from personal experience)
Well that's kinda hard to judge then since you're getting hit by bare knuckles but I say I agree with you. Back when I was a weighylifter and i first entered my gym when I weighed (190) and my punches were slow and didnt feel like they had much power now that I weigh (150) I feel like I hit way harder then when I was in my bodybuilder state idk.
Your rotally correct mate, boxing skill and correct technique combined with old school conditioning is all you need, i think modern S/C is overrated , mostly personal trainers trying to make a living.
Hey coach, Im 6'6 tall and In skinny as a rail at 200 pounds, I wanna be a heavyweight so whats the maximal upper limit weight that doesnt slow down my punches?
Wait you are aware you can develop explosiveness and strength from weight lifting without gaining size or getting slower right lol my over head press and squat are all way more than when I started and I weigh less and I am forsure faster and more explosive now than I was before I think you mean body building. Not strength training. 😕
Hey coach v. Wouldn't you argue the best strategy when it comes to boxing is to avoid getting hit rather than landing more hits in the round? Remember you saying you want your fighters to reach an amount of strikes by the end of a round...
I believe he was talking about amateur boxing. Which makes sense it’s 3 rounds at 3 mins. It’s kind of hard to win a 3rd fight when your being conservative or waiting on a counter punch
I run 30min, box 30min, do 1-1.5hr full body workouts at the gym using compound movement & progressive overload 4 days a week. Marathon runner (10yrs) that loves the gym (4yrs) & just started boxing 6months )
God is the greatest he always confirmed things twice to me I was just thinking that it makes sense how you said it the thinner boxes are the best boxers cuz you got to go 12 3 minute rounds so the less wait on you the better
the only thing ive noticed is more stability in your joints. Some people just have a very heavy hand when they punch and Yes they are born like that, with technique and conditioning forget it! Some guys do train and work on some punching power but its not the same and its sad because one wishes to hit harder but its just not meant to be, if you lack power perhaps speed and foot movement is your strongest trait
Its beneficial depending on your natural weight class. Lifting for strength and not bodybuilding is always the way to go. It helps. Just understand your boxing is more important. If you're below cruiserweight, lifting 1-2x a week is good, if you are cruiserweight to heavyweight 3x is fine because theres alot more pushing and mauling
@Symbol not in the beggining when he was at is best because i think i’ve read that cus d’amato didn’t believed to much in weightlifting for punching power
Personally, I’m not too big on weights, although I noticed sometimes after doing a lot of running doing some leg presses can help alleviate the tension and make your legs a little stronger, but you have to use full range of motion so you can still run properly
@@coachv3436 ok so what was your routine like in your strength training . For boxing . Like how much time you used to lift weight for boxing and how many times a week .
As many say weight lifting will slow down boxing. But now wonder if keep weiggt lifting light. If avoid heavy lifting. I made that mistake. Combine weights with boxing.
Some light weights are relatively necessary but not heavy weights and lowe reputation. Boxers need to be doing explosion exercises not for muscle mass. The training for boxers is for indurance and speed. No heavyweights are good for Boxing. Other than maybe some deadlifts for the lowe back and leg power. But the boxer should keep a lowe Bmi and work on the stamina gain not muscle mass that will only slow you down and make you fatigue quicker .
Lifting weights for the purpose of lifting more weight will definitely fuck you up from a boxing standpoint, lifting weights for the purpose of lifting the same weight faster over time will help increase whatever power/explosiveness you have without adding the unwanted bulk
Powerlifting if done right won’t put on huge muscles it will only make muscles dense and stronger . Imagine a small guy twice as strong but no or little weight as before . Powerlifting focuses on dense muscles , and not big ones . I was explosive when I trained or spared . I would find a new leave of energy . Right when I was tapped out ready to give up . My punches were unbelievable strong enough for the guy I’m sparring with to ask me to stop hitting hard . I would brake through guards or blocks . But I will say it was moments I had this great moments of strength . My punches were juiced up speed too . It actually made me faster too powerlifting . I lost over a 100 pounds and put muscle lean muscle on too . So it depends on what weightlifting you talking about . People who ride bikes do powerlifting for more speed and power . It’s used in different sports .
Hello roman thanks for your comment it was very helpful for me..can you tell me what is the powerlifting program or routine you used for being strong not big for boxing..
What do you think about calisthenics with boxing? I basically only do bodyweight exercises and go for explosive movements. Thanks for being so consistent btw man, really keeps me in the zone when I’m outside the gym.
For real. You put on that muscle thinking you're going to hit like a hw, you're going to get put on that weight with actual hw WITH that actual power, then you're going to get embarrassed imo
Agreed just like there are some lil dudes that can ko the average big guy, there are some lil dudes that could rep out on the biggest dude in a commercial gyms max
That’s not what he saying. A lot of boxer go up or down weight classes. Just don’t go up because you lifted weights is what he saying because weight lifting don’t mean you hit harder
If you start at 15, i would instantly change to MMA, it has developed so fast and its not one dimensional or do Thaiboxing/Kickboxing. Because at that age you can get really flexible and get some bone conditioning, not bashing boxing or anything thats pure art but we life in the 21st century, fighting has developed.
@@jorgebush7519 I agree. But if he's training to be a professional boxer he should stick to boxing. If he wants to finish fights on the streets, then a combination of Muay Thai and BJJ will suffice.
Do gym machines dull fast twicth muscles?
Let me tell you from experience. I lift heavy. as long as you goal is not to gain weight. Plus lifting heavy does not limit your fast muscle fiber unless you are looking to be a body builder. So lift weight and as heavy as you want
Calisthenics are beneficial. Less stress on the body.
What up coach V. What's your perspective on calisthenics and boxing??
@bosniakslayer6614 bodybuilders are definitely too big
I always look up to Tyson, Evander or Ngannou when it comes to explosive power and no homo, they look strong af
What about evander holyfield who gained 30 pounds of muscle during his boxing career? I didn't like affect him or anything
Your rotally correct mate, boxing skill and correct technique combined with old school conditioning is all you need, i think modern S/C is overrated , mostly personal trainers trying to make a living.
I never bloody thought of it going over the extra i did with my boxing mentor years ago bend down to touch your toes scissors jump
I just started lifting and I'm skinny and I'm doing boxing soon so I'm going to get a little muscle not to much
Hey coach, Im 6'6 tall and In skinny as a rail at 200 pounds, I wanna be a heavyweight so whats the maximal upper limit weight that doesnt slow down my punches?
200 pound is already considered heavyweight in boxing.
Wait you are aware you can develop explosiveness and strength from weight lifting without gaining size or getting slower right lol my over head press and squat are all way more than when I started and I weigh less and I am forsure faster and more explosive now than I was before I think you mean body building. Not strength training. 😕
🔥
Hey coach v. Wouldn't you argue the best strategy when it comes to boxing is to avoid getting hit rather than landing more hits in the round? Remember you saying you want your fighters to reach an amount of strikes by the end of a round...
I believe he was talking about amateur boxing. Which makes sense it’s 3 rounds at 3 mins. It’s kind of hard to win a 3rd fight when your being conservative or waiting on a counter punch
@@nathanielhernandez2992 oh makes sense
I run 30min, box 30min, do 1-1.5hr full body workouts at the gym using compound movement & progressive overload 4 days a week.
Marathon runner (10yrs)
that loves the gym (4yrs) & just started boxing 6months )
I do it but only for strength not for muscle building (hyperthrophy)
I'll say calisthenics or bodyweight exercises are the go-to for boxing, just like Mike Tyson.
@Symbol not in the beggining when he was at is best because i think i’ve read that cus d’amato didn’t believed to much in weightlifting for punching power
mike tyson was also on steroids
Coach what you have done like in your prime time do you lift weights or not .
I returned to boxing 6 years ago i was gone from the boxing for 23 years i made a come back
Some light weights are relatively necessary but not heavy weights and lowe reputation.
Smart man
🙌🏼🙌🏼💪🏼
Do you have any workout plan for boxer
Yes, but they are all customized based on the individuals needs for more info you can DM me on IG @COACH.V_
Lifting weights for the purpose of lifting more weight will definitely fuck you up from a boxing standpoint, lifting weights for the purpose of lifting the same weight faster over time will help increase whatever power/explosiveness you have without adding the unwanted bulk
I get it now, the people who lift weights don't hit harder BUT can take a harder hit due to their body having plenty of muscle
How many times should I run a day if I’m trying to lose weight
A couple miles and sprints also.
to loose weight you dont even have to workout you just need to be in a calorie deficit
What if im really skinny?
I Say Just workout bro u won't turn into a mass monster
I hear what you saying but then it’s guys like Anthony Joshua and etc. how would u explain them?
I think you have to take this video with a grain of salt. He’s talking certain weight classes and more bodybuilding than strength training.
The current heavyweight champion Tyson fury has a video somewhere of him heavy deadlifting.
What do you think about calisthenics with boxing? I basically only do bodyweight exercises and go for explosive movements.
Thanks for being so consistent btw man, really keeps me in the zone when I’m outside the gym.
Absolutely, that's my favorite way to go. That and plyometrics in circuits💪🏽
For God so loved the world that he gave his one and only Son, that whoever believes in him shall not perish but have eternal life John 3:16,
For real. You put on that muscle thinking you're going to hit like a hw, you're going to get put on that weight with actual hw WITH that actual power, then you're going to get embarrassed imo
Powerlifting yes, bodybuilding no
Nahhhh cali’s only
@@LukasP143 What's a "cali"?
@@mrt445 6 months later but calisthenics bro
Agreed just like there are some lil dudes that can ko the average big guy, there are some lil dudes that could rep out on the biggest dude in a commercial gyms max
Mixing Olympic lifting, compound lifts and calisthenics is the way to go
Light heavyweight on down shouldn’t be lifting
Look at Antony Joshua tho he’s a big weight lifter
he a heavyweight bruh he already slow
1:44 didnt Roy Jones go from middleweight to heavyweight
Yh but he’s probably the most naturally gifted boxer of all time, I’d say
Exception don’t make the rule🤦🏾♂️
@@bigslime2235 James Tony did it aswell
@@mistaoutcome9936 it's possible I guess
That’s not what he saying. A lot of boxer go up or down weight classes. Just don’t go up because you lifted weights is what he saying because weight lifting don’t mean you hit harder
Im a boxer but i still lift weights because it makes you look good
Weights is definitely the way to go to maximize aesthetic perfection
Should u spit or swallow
Its different when you 80kg +
2 many dudes wannalook pretty for the beach
I mean who doesn't
I’m starting at 15 hopefully not too late 🥊
nah bro not too late. I'm starting at 25
If you start at 15, i would instantly change to MMA, it has developed so fast and its not one dimensional or do Thaiboxing/Kickboxing.
But to be honest any fighting experience will give you a massive advantage in a street fight cause most punks can't throw proper punches. It's best to just pick anything because making the wrong choice is better than making no choice at all. Pick whatever you enjoy the most and can stick to.
Errol Spence started at that age and look at him now.
@@mkminor3398 Randy Couture, Mark Hunt, Yoel Romero, Kimbo Slice, Brock Lesnar, and Chuck Liddell all started in their 30s.
if you can lift some more than your body weight your probably good
Definitely 💪🏼
Just look up Mauriz Pudz. He's literally one of the strongest men on the planet, put that never translate to power when he fight in MMA. I don't think he's even scored a clean ko.
Very interesting that you pointed that out. I have always tried to explain this to people on the outside and they will see a guy like triple G compare him to a guy like Aquaman, and be totally devastated if they ever witnessed them fight to the death lol.
@@coachv3436 exactly. You seen the video of Connor Mcgregor sparring the strong man Thor? Look that up. Pretty much shows exactly what you're talking about.
@@coachv3436 Eddie Hall sparring Vidal Riley too.

Lol
It's been said that Tyson only followed a calisthenics based routine with little to no weight lifting
