    You do really nice work! It’s looking fantastic in there. Replacing the stock input jacks with shunted Switchrafts (like you did with the speaker jack) and installing a virtual center tap can help quiet these Silvertones down a bunch, too. This amp is lucky to have you.

      Thanks! Yes final step will be the input jacks (and maybe a high/low setup like fenders).

      Did the fender inputs to mine it worked great, i installed the solder lugs for the caps on the open part of the masonite board, worked very good

    As another has said, shunted input jacks and a virtual center tap on the heaters will quiet things down alot, also shorten that output trafo ground.

      I was going to add a virtual CT but then I realized it'd already got a CT. Did yours?

    Nice video. I am just finishing one up myself, same upgrade. One thing I am noting is the power tubes seem to run hot even though the bias voltage is close, -35. But it sounds very good. The tremolo is a bit weak and the reverb pan was taken apart at some stage is missing a tiny piece of metal? that has paper on one end and couples and decouples the spring via the piezo elements - have you had the sincere pleasure of opening up and working on the reverb tank yet? It is a strange one and I wouldn't mind the opinion of another tech on it if you can spare the time. I know what you mean, these amps are a bit odd in terms of layout and not fun. But for the most part besides the reverb issue it has a uniquely crisp clean sound and an edgy distortion that the treble control influences greatly. Thanks. Oh and the unit can be noisy with no input because the input jacks do not shunt to ground and could stand to be replaced otherwise it is an easy workaround - plug the guitar in before you turn on lol.

      Thanks! Yeah if you check a later video I do the Fender input jack setup on this one. Reverb worked on this one.. Well it "works" as it should which isn't particularly a great reverb. If it didn't I wouldn't bother honestly, it's not worth the effort imo

      @@YeatzeeGuitar By the way, nice audio mix too, loud and intelligible unlike some, that is important on an educational video. I hear you on the reverb, I am letting my fascination with it keep the repair of it alive - never seen one quite like it before. But many have said what you have and there are mods out there. Be well!

    At 10:38 you said "the new wire" will go from the base of the fuse holder to the power switch-( replacing the white wire that went to the ground switch).
    Question- what wire gauge is that new wire?

    • @YeatzeeGuitar
      @YeatzeeGuitar  5 місяців тому +2

      18 iirc. It's the biggest that'd fit in that tiny hole the fuse tags had. The wire is deceptive because the insulation is extremely thin, it's that really cool ptte or whatever aerospace grade stuff from tubedepot. Used all over my vox series.

    I have a customer dropping off a Silvertone 1485 next week and I do not look forward to it. He bought it new in 1965 and actually wanted to wait while I do any work, I told him I can't do that, especially since it's never been serviced or worked on.

      Oh man… I did that once. And only once. Dude wanted to chat the whole time and I’m ADD all the way, couldn’t focus for nothing. Never happened again.

      Oh wow! Normally I'd say at least you know it wasn't messed with, but the way they were built originally is just as bad as a fender being tinkered with lol. He wanted to watch you while you worked on it? Oof. I've actually had a couple people interested in doing that, but these videos are a great solution. They can see what's being done, I can do it on my time, and it serves as a good record/advertising.

      @@YeatzeeGuitar, back in the 1980s when I was installing car stereo for a living, there was another local installation shop that had a sign: "Labor Rate: $30 an hour; $45 if you watch; $60 if you help". 😉

      @@YeatzeeGuitar Yes, he wanted to come in and wait. I explained that my bench is in my basement and part of a very large bedroom and not set up for visitors. I wish I had a repair shop with a neon sign in the window and old electronics piled up everywhere.

    In case you want to delve a little deeper into reducing some of the noise in this amp, I found this guys series on repairing one, and he goes the extra steps of reducing the noise. ua-cam.com/video/KQY9uxYn8nc/v-deo.html His channel is called Retro Tech & Electronics. I just finished restoring one of these myself (I still have to re-cover the chassis' cabinet) and I got everything to work. I also removed the hard wired speaker cable and installed a jack for a 4 ohm speaker or a 2nd jack for an 8 ohm. I am not technically trained so I have a question regarding the shunting jack. Should I go back and install two shunting jacks, since in my case the 4 ohm jack will not currently be used? I too try to make nice and neat solder joints, but on this amp, the original builders did multiple wire wraps on just about ever connection point, so I had to resort to soldering my connections on top of the lug, or in some cases I left a portion of their wire and soldered to it. I know that is not ideal but sometimes you do what you have to in order to make it work. I commend you on the quality of these videos, and the way you explained what your were doing. I definitely gave you a thumbs up.
