Now that we've got all of our boat decking down, it's time to caulk with cotton, and we go through some practice runs and observations when it comes to this important part of finishing our DIY wooden boat deck.
Caulking this straight-laid wooden boat deck might be a little simpler than if it were a sprung deck, but we wanted to make sure we were doing the best we could with what we've got, so we did some test runs with different methods and caulking irons. Also, anywhere we can do things smartly and efficiently, we try to figure out that best way before launching into new, big parts of the build.
Wondering about the maple sugaring equipment? Aaron's really into it. We hope he can get all set up for a big season this coming early spring.

Acorn to Arabella is a wooden boat building project taking place in Granby, Massachusetts. Steve started as an amateur wooden boat builder building a 38' wooden sailboat in his backyard: designer William Atkin's Ingrid with a Stormy Petrel's gaff rig. These videos follow the journey from tree felling, to lumber milling, to lofting, to the lead keel pour and beyond-sharing details of the woodworking, carpentry, metal smithing, tool building, and tool maintenance that classic wooden boats command. This ultimate DIY boatbuilding project will continue well past launch, when he and the crew will travel and learn to cruise aboard the handmade wooden boat that they've built. Just kidding about all that, this channel is about a Siberian Laika named Akiva.

This feels like the most sudden change in how the much the boat looks like "A Boat", since the frames were steamed in.
Obligatory: "NOW she looks like a real ship".
Aaron seems like a really great kid, soon to be great young man. Thanks for letting him be part of the crew, Steve. And happy birthday Aaron!!
Over the months, I've been so impressed with KP's contribution to the project. Her teamwork, building skills, and sense of humor all combine to reward us viewers while adding to the spirit of the project!
Great progress, guys. (And thumbs up to Ben for the sweet banjo lead at around 15:00.)
Just when you thought Arabella was looking sweet, another week comes and she is more beautiful than ever. That deck looks phenomenal! Kp's shoe repair shop will be opening sometime in the future when they decide it's time for a sit down job. Aaron rocking the demolition was cool. Hi Aaron! Have a safe week!
I'm an old guy and not able to get around easily. Your adventures building Arabella are a source of tremendous enjoyment for me. I have been watching since you cut down the first trees on your property to get the project started. I have enjoyed seeing your progress and I believe that I have seen every single episode since the beginning of the project. I just got my "Victoria" shirt in the mail. I wear it proudly. Thanks for adding so much joy to my very quiet life!
Hello Gregory! Thank you so much for your support and for sharing how much you enjoy what we do. It really fuels our fire, and we’re glad you’re here!
@@AcornToArabella Hmm, Maybe you could invite Gregory for a sail when you launcher her?
Adjust thrust bearing on the band saw and it will cutter faster. Also smooth out the entry cut.
Love how KP got Steve's seal of approval for working the weekends. As a super work ethic guy, I take this as sign the ship will be done on time!
I'm basically just parroting other comments now, but wow, she really looks like a boat now! Incredible! I've been watching since the lead keel pour, and its incredible to go back and see just the backbone of the ship and the amount of steps it took to this point.
😂My two bits.
From the inception, what you and Alex did will always stand out for me.
You guys rocked it😊.
Delighted for you all with the progress being made, sure starting to look “ship shape”. Don’t go and buy new shoes KP, there looks another 12months in them yet following ‘refurbishment’ ! Thanks again for sharing. Best wishes from Sheffield, UK.
Man, the shot at 1:31 really brings it all together. I've been watching yall since you poured the keel and it's finally becoming a reality.
She looks great! Thanks for the lesson on caulking seams! Great video!
May I say again, taking a moment to appreciate the crisp and faceted lines of the deck planks that dive, like gothic feathers, into the nib board and framed in contrast by the soft outer edge of cover boards that falls to the subtle beading, the most modest of fine jewelry draped about her neck.
🙉 wow! You have such a purdy way with words. ❤️
Almost as good as “It was a dark and stormy night”.
I recommend you keep your day job.
The deck looks awesome. Great work Stephen and KP. Thanks for sharing.
Old fashioned work ethic, how refreshing!!!
Absolutely beautiful. Gotta love KP. Very impressive, all of you.
The deck looks dang beautiful.
One of my favorite videos by far! Lots of work to watch getting done. Looks so amazing to see Arabella look more and more finished.
The deck looks fantastic. The boat is really looking nice.
ah, those days when the progress is great and you see such a difference. The joy of creation is being able to look back at it, at the end of a long day and be fulfilled with the accomplishment. cheers, Chuck
ABSOLUTELY BEAUTIFUL!!! 😍😍😍
Such an inspirational channel!!! Love all you and your crew do Steve, and that's a fine vessel you have there Sir.
WHOA my gosh, you guys. I cannot believe the progress. It makes a huge difference to see the boat with some deck boards down! keep up the hard work.
Good on you KP keep your boots going....the deck look's great
Wow , what a transformation! Keep up the great work!
Happy Friday Guys, the Deck is looking stunning.
Happy birthday Arron, great work team as ever!
Nice words on KP, I like her enthusiasm and desire to learn.
Feels like enormous progress all of a sudden! I suppose it's the accumulated effect of the visual feel (a boat suddenly appeared) and the "finishing" feel of preparing to caulk. It most be very satisfying to come to work and see how far you've come.
One of the most satisfying of your videos to watch... and I have watched them all!
Cheers! That’s high praise!
Deck is looking very nice!
Having someone who matches your work ethic is such a boon, yalls rhythm and pace has been really impressive recently. Great to hear that it’s come with a consistent and smooth work/life balance as well. Happy Friday from the UK!
I see a very special Truck & Trailer making its way to a Boat Shed to pickup a wonderful Package, for The Beginning of A Voyage. Viewing the Masts going in ohh, Man. The engine gets its bed too. All this converging just so... Thanks for everyone sharing the Journey!
Amazing work as always. The deck is a big game changer on the look of Arabella.
Good morning guys. Another Friday to view the progress on Arabella. Deck looks great. Thanks Ben.
Thanks, Tom! Happy Friday!
Really great episode, so many talented folks contributing. When it comes to caulking you know it's getting closer to the finish.
Feels that way!
Thank you for the best demonstration of caulking I have ever watched
Holy cannoli. That’s high praise! Thank you.
Deck is looking great! And claps to KP's emergency boot repair... i did the same thing to my shop shoes just a couple weeks ago, only i used hot glue since it was handy and i figured it'd stay flexible. Lol... i should probably go ahead and buy some new ones.
its looking really good! kudos
Nice to see such hard work from the young fellow what wonderful effort. There is so much one can learn from hard work.
It's great, Steve, that you give him the opportunity to work and learn. It appears that you give him tasks that he can do on his own so he can learn independence and responsibility and develop pride in working hard and doing a job "well done."
Looking great!
Been watching since you cast the keel. From stumbling on your channel watching art casting to now I see your beautiful work of art come to life. It is beautiful, watching your process and care for every aspect is true art.
Thank you very much!
The deck looks really Fing good!!!!!
Great episode! Keep rolling more progress! 👍👍
That looks fantastic
There's nothing quite like the feeling of driving in cotton caulking.
Excellent work!
Cheers from Alaska
Steve ya sad a lot of good things about KT, it's good to let the crew know ya care. Also your guesses said it clearly the love shared between you Steve and your viewers. Have a great weekend!
It's beautiful!
Really nice to see all the decking in place. Great to hear from the folks that came over for the birthday announcement. Thanks for sharing you journey! 🙂
Cheers for being here!
Good to see a familiar face coming back into the boathouse. Jack had great energy and a wealth of experience to bring to the project.
Haven't watched in a while, changed jobs ,but found the time to get in this video, the A A has come a long way , very happy to see the progress 😀
Hooray! Welcome back, Frederick!
Looks amazing
That is a great looking deck!
Excellent stuff bro
That's a ship. She has the bottom, sides and top... she's all there, she's now a ship. That's so exciting to finally see the progress from laying the keel to the deck being placed. From top down that's an unmistakable shape of a ship.
A boat, for sure! And thanks for your excitement!!
A word about a word, for reference. Ship: We don’t plan on engaging in commerce with her… carrying goods and whatnot. “Ship” is reserved for a particular kind of rig or a boat with cargo.
@@AcornToArabella I debated between ship and boat. Ship felt like it had more elegance. It didn't occur to me there was a definition difference. I stand corrected, cheers! :)
And I think I get what ya mean there for sure. Thanks for the wonderful compliment!
That deck is a work of art. You deserve to be proud of it.
Thank you very much, Tom!
She is looking very beautiful. Can't wait till some day I can visit her. I look forward to see my part getting install as a part of her.
Wow…..caulking…..over 40 years since I did caulking. Great seeing every Friday as a huge jump in the progress of the wooden boat. It’s the end of the week if I’m watching Arabella and already I’m set up for crashing out. Good night from Scotland….see you next week.
Cheers!
Volunteers and employees who feel appreciated and respected will always be willing to go the extra mile, it says something about their passion and the people they work with and for, it's a great compliment to your work ethic and character!
Well put!
Beautiful!
Nice to come home and relax to watching my Friday fix with a coffee 😁
☕️😌
I'm going to call it K.C.'s cockpit. Great work K.C. back when the work area around the boat made finishing that side of the boat it seemed like the boat was unbalanced in appearance. NOW the deck is in and it just looks right. I'm happy
Enjoyed the show.. thank you very much..
And thanks for watching, Paul!
Happy Birthday Aaron!
3:47 love the artwork on that car 😍those black stripes really give it that "if you can't fix it with ducttape, you're not using enough ducttape!" vibe 😇
There seems like a real nice atmosphere in the boat house now , you guys are working together and Arabella is growing beautifully , Looks like a boat all of a sudden .
All of a sudden. 😁
Great success!
At the point when you come in and work on top of what you get paid for, it’s not called work anymore.
Kudus to KP, also for repairing your shoes instead of buying a new pair.
You know, considering I've been watching this boat go from a pile of lead poured into a "hole-in-the-ground" to the beautiful ship that she is becoming..... Have to say, it's been weekends well spent.
Now we can see the beautiful double curvature of the deck, designed to shed water efficiently. Not only neccessary, but stunning to look at.
Thank you,
Collin!
We are all very happy to have KP on the team. They are wonderful on camera too! Feel the love KP!
Let's all join in the destruction of the English language.
Good evening from Japan!
Congrats on the completed deck!
The testing of the caulking with the cross cut at the end was a great visualization!
Thanks, Robert! We’re glad you liked that. Part curiosity, part chance for demonstration in the episode. Neat to see what methods did what.
The curves of the deck look really beautiful! Well done so far!
Love that the Country Critters are overseeing the work :-D thanks for putting up the picture for all to see Steve!
😊 and as ever, thank YOU very much.
Interesting episode and so wonderful seeing the deck! Tell KP I cobble too...lol. I glued my gardening shoes together until I got some more outside shoes. Yes, I put tape around them until the glue dried. 😂 Such is life. I woke up late this morning and...I promise you...the FIRST thing I though of was A2A. So, made coffee and tuned in. Your deck is lovely and I'd pay to walk on it. 😂 Can't wait for the next episode. Tell everyone hi, give Akiva a smooch. Love you all.
Pats to Akiva will be delivered when we’re back from Newport!
Very interesting, Looking Good 👍
that looks awesome
Congratulations looking good
Dear. Anne and Steve,
Happy Friday in the first place.
You and your friends are making a great progress with the deck of Arabella and we especially like the way the planks are made against the side of the deck with the toothed joints.
We wish you and all who are working on Arabella lots of success with finishing this beautiful boat and we wish you as well as your both families all the happiness of the world plus we send you ❤️ from the Netherlands.
Best regards,
Willeke and Dick de Graaff
Hello from the Newport boat show Willeke and Dick! Consider this a post card! Happy Friday.
it's amazing to see the transformation from merely a keel to it's current state, the Arabella is going to be a lovely boat when finished
Thank you!
Awesome episode.
Thanks, Chuck! Happy Friday!
Good morning, Arabella is looking great!
Happy Friday, Frank!
Great vid, thanks. Somehow imagined that cotton to be far more aggressively driven in. Love to see the deck coming together so neatly. You have a slick team thing going on.
Oh boy howdy was it ever aggressively put in.
Hey Ben, nice work with that banjo. 👍
Good morning Akiva and Crew 😸😺
Love the shoe repair. My kind of cobbler 😋
Really looking like a boat now! The small bronze stanchions along the gunwale have a hole bored near the base of the upright in them, champher the edge of the holes. Save wear and tear on any line that might be run through it.
Waiting for lunch. Can't wait to see the caulking....rr Normandy,, Fra.
Must admit, I liked KP from the very first minute. Great personality, fantastic team member. Arabella is soaking up all that positivity and it really shows.
I received my Long Live Victoria t-shirt in the mail yesterday. Thank You! 😃
Hooray!
@11:00 so glad to see a regular claw hammer in this build, I have one of those. Guess I'm ready to build a boat.
It has been along time Steve, Been a loyal fan since the beginning, I was a young man when you started and soon will be 80! All joking aside, I grew up on the boats in Miami, achieved my USCG Captains license and wish you smooth sailing as you draw closer to launch time.
Cheers!
The decking is looking amazing Guys. Can't wait to see it all corked out and sealed. Also looking forward to the engine being dropped in.
The engine has been in for a while!
@@AcornToArabella Doh! My bad Steve hahahaha
People who love what they do enjoy their work. I wish I had showed up one week later to see the decking, I will be back. And
I would have
Liked to meet the rest of you all.
Cheers, James!
Decking looking super. Great demo/teaching on 'caulking' the seams. This has always seemed like a tedious chapter but such an important one in the ever-moving hull and deck, once introduced fully to the Oggin. Aiden is taking on more and more challenging tasks. That young man is experiencing something that a very few could ever hope to be exposed to at such an age. And KP's work ethic is just the right fit for the A2A crew.
Tedious and there’s a ton of it. At 37 feet long there’s something like 2500 feet worth of caulking between the deck and sides and need to do multiple times. That’s more than a mile. Then fairing and painting the boat is like four layers per side (primer, above the water line paint, anti fouling, anti fouling) and all the deck varnishing, housetop, etc.
The work being done is outstandingly good, this is the step with the exterior where things slow down a lot. In total the final watertight sealing of everything from start to end should be like 6 weeks of work. If there’s anything that pushes back launch, this is it. If they get these steps done on time they’ll make their launch date. This is the last big crucial item to be able to put the boat in the water. The rest is small stuff in the scheme of things.
@@flyingember Three passes of cotton, then, would be about 1.5-miles of caulking, not to include the pitch and clean up.....all before paint coatings. Wow! Thanks for the info - makes me appreciate the effort all the more.
...oops!! Mega-apologies to AARON for mis-remembering his correct name. It is not Aiden as I mistakenly said. He's still a fine young man either way.
Your workmanship is exquisite, Stephen and company. Leo's got more experience boatbuilding but the outcome seems purrrrrty close!
Steve’s mindfulness, curiosity, and wide breadth of experience in other types of building has served him very well. For most things in life, those things will carry one very, very far-even in new endeavors. And at this point, I’d hardly call the boat a new endeavor anymore. -Anne
Wow - it's great to see the boat getting to this stage; fantastic work and resilience to keep trucking through a project of this scale. Tell KP that the 3M 4200 might be a better bet than epoxy for shoe repairs - it's flexible! :D
Morning 'bella fam! Getting cooler here on the coast. 😊☕
Happy Friday, Ryan!
She’s beautiful, her lines are perfect!
I'm with KP, glue em up and keep on trucking!
