    They're exactly the same chemical-wise.
    Lab-created gems are less likely to contain flaws and impurities, and don't have the blood of exploited workers and possibly slaves on them.

If you try to pass it off as a natural ring that would be an issue for sure. The people that have looked at it have no idea that it isn't a natural ring.

      Also why does resale matter, you buy the ring which you keep and if you want to upgrade you upgrade and since all jewelry is all about looks why spend thousands more on a 1 carat natural diamond when you could spend the same on a much larger lab diamond.

    Hey Michael! Long time listener, first time caller here. I’ve spent s few years researching stones and stone options. I’ve found your videos to be extremely informative, non biased, and educational, and I’ve made a lot of decisions based on advice you have offered. My question to you is this- how do you feel about these small time jewellers like “diamond concierge” that come on UA-cam to convince the general population that mined diamonds are the only way to go. I’ve watched people claiming that lab diamonds, moissanites, and CZs are not only the same thing, but are fake diamonds.... and also poor alternatives to mined diamonds.... do you find yourself needing to re-educate customers who have been misinformed by these people?

    • @FireandBrilliance
      @FireandBrilliance  6 років тому +7

      Hi Gigi! Thanks for your comment and insight. Great question by the way. 😊
      The diamond industry has been around for many years and the traditional way of doing business is being disrupted by modern alternatives.
      Jewelry companies have a choice to adopt and embrace the different and newer options that are available in the market or to simply disregard it altogether. Many prefer to preserve ideologies of yesteryear so they’ll push an agenda that suits them best. It’s neither right or wrong as it’s a matter of personal preference in my opinion.
      I hope that our videos are serving its purpose by providing unbiased information to assist those that are seeking for it. I believe that it’s only fair to showcase both sides of the spectrum and allow people to make an educated decision on their own terms.
      Thanks again for following the content. It is appreciated! - Michael

    I get the hate out there about lab grown but if I am buying a diamond I am buying the highest quality diamond that I can I don’t care if it was grown in the ground or in a lab. I don’t get the comments on natural diamonds being rare that’s such a marketing tool from DeBeer’s. Diamonds have been giving as engagement rings since something like 40s or 50s along with countless pieces of jewelry since then, how many diamonds do you think have been sold and in circulation since then? If you want to buy one today there are plenty available.

      A Diamond is a diamond because it's rare, not simply because of scientific elements. A Synthetic Diamond is NOT rare...therefore....they are not the same on that scale alone. Rubies and Sapphires are both categorized and sold in the market by Geographic Origins and priced accordingly. A Burmese Ruby will cost you much more than a Vietnamese Ruby. Price compare a Synthetic Ruby to a Burmese Ruby. Where are we now on price? Exactly! They are not the same.

      Eventually no one will be mining gems and they will all be grown because mining will become environmentally frowned upon so all gems will be lab created when people realize they don’t need to wreck the environment and they can spend less.

    As a collector one important aspect that draws me to natural stones is rarity and that there are natural chaotic forces that can create something beautiful, that is why I would not be interested in a lab created stone.
    I collect gemstones that cannot be replicated in labs like tanzanite and tsavorite garnets, and those that have unique natural inclusions.

    Nice video - As long as you are being educated about your purchase, I don't have a problem with either natural or lab created diamonds. DeBeers monopolized and manipulated the natural diamond market, running up prices and making natural stones seem more valuable than the market would otherwise bear. Lab stones will continue to get better and better, along with more of them, they'll lose more value over time.
    Regardless of which diamond you choose, it's like a car, as soon as it leaves the store it loses lots of value. (Different from Gold, a gold maple or gold eagle has worth near the spot price after purchase.)

    In my mind's eye, I don't see any difference in gems natural or lab grown. Plus, I try to avoid the word "synthesize" because that just makes them sound fake, as in worthless glass. The way I see it, gems are grown in these huge facilities that simulate the peculiar environments and conditions that make gems form, kinda like how Dinosaurs were reanimated from strands of DNA in Jurassic Park, and the dinosaurs are living, breathing, thinking beasts. So, by that logic, what does that say about the authenticity of lab-grown gems? If I had my way, I'd build one of those facilities so that I could grow diamonds in 12 different colors. One for each element

    I've always thought it was crazy that Lab would cost less than natural. What people don't realize, is that you need millions of dollars to buy the right equipment just to make a gemstone. Plus it takes time to grow these... they don't grow overnight .... It still takes time to grow them in labs... It's all mental when it comes to gemstones natural or lab created... In my opinion they are both the same ... Way better to go for lab if you want perfection and cost ... I feel lab is for the people who can't afford $60,000 ruby or a diamond worth $10,000 ... Funny how now they are selling more lab created diamonds than natural ones... and the prices on those are really high ... yet the prices for sapphires and rubies remain the same ... supply and demand honestly... I love lab gemstones just as much as I do natural ... For me as long as it's lab or natural ... I'm cool... it's the glass ones or plastic ones you stay away from :) ... When people ask me if my ruby is real... I say yes... even though it might be a lab created Ruby... It is still a real ruby... Now if they ask me if it's natural... that's a whole different story.... Love the video!!! I a big gem collector :) One day lab created stones will go up in value ... many mines are beginning to dry up ... think about that one :)

      Have you looked at any? They are not all D colored nor IF, please go to places like James Allen, Blue Nile, Clean Origin, etc and view some as the majority have inclusions and lower color grades just like earth mined. This is a simple case of confusing lab grown for stimulants.

    Thank you for the info on Lab created vs natural in gemstones. I know this video is from 2017 and things have changed, but I am a bit confused especially when it comes to the violet blue colored gemstone tanzanite. It seems that experts agree that there is no synthetic lab created tanzanite, yet, I see syntethic tanzanite being advertised everywhere, OVC, JTV, as well as online retailers. Can you provide any clarity on this? Is there now a synthetic lab grown tanzanite or not? Thank you again for you expertise.

      Never mind, I thnk I have figured it out. I believe that some Chinese labs have figured out how to color cubic zirconia to display some of the D Block tanzanite character and it is being sold as a tanzanite stimulant or man made tanzanite. Some unscrupulous people though, are selling this lab made material online as natural D Block tanzanite. I hope this helps someone from getting burned for thier hard erned money.

    If it is literally impossible to tell a top grade lab grown from a top grade natural, why are naturals still so valuable? Surely you could knock out millions of lab grown ones and wipe the value off the whole gem market overnight? Or are they still stupidly expensive to make in the lab? Supposedly natural diamonds aren't even that rare, and Debeers allegedly have billions worth in storage, but keep them off the market so as to deliberately keep prices high.

    • @msk3905
      @msk3905 2 роки тому +1

      It is possible to tell the difference between lab grown and earth mined with the right testing equipment, using just your eye is very difficult because they are both diamonds. People just don’t get or want to accept this fact. As for the price of earth mined being crazy expensive you can thank DeBeers and greedy diamond salesman. Like you said they are not rare but there is a demand for them so if you charge more and get it why not?

    you can only compare moissanite to other diamond simulants never to actual diamonds , and being the most marketed simulant does not make it the best, diamond nexus makes a far better stone that not only looks more like a diamone with pure D color but also has almost the same refractivev index as real diamond unlike moissanite, so it has diamond fire , moissanite does not its a double refractive stone

    I been hearing about the different types of growth methods such as Flux, Flame Fusion, Pulled etc. I was reading that Flame Fusion gemstones are basically just glass and nothing like a natural gemstone at all. Is this true? Also what method is best for lab created gems that are just like those found from the earth? Would it be Flux? I ask because I am wanting to start buying lab created gems, but after reading the different types of growth methods I am not so sure now. Some lab created gems are just as high priced as earth mined, and the ones that are affordable seem to be Flame Fusion, and from what I am reading that type of method is basically nothing at all like a real gemstone.

    • @matthew46502
      @matthew46502 6 років тому +3

      No...the Flame Fusion Process is still the same Gemstone Species (not glass) and it is a process is used with Colored Gemstones. It is a cheaper and faster synthetic process. Flux synthetic colored gemstones are usually a higher grade of synthetic and can contain inclusions that mimic natural colored gemstones. When it comes to Diamond Synthetics, there are two known methods for creating them. They are CVD (Chemical Vapor Deposition) and HPHT (High Pressure High Temp.) Again, Flame Fusion (not glass), Pulled (not glass), and Flux Synthetics are processes used for Colored Gemstones (anything but Diamond.) HPHT and CVD Synthetic Processes are used to manufacture diamonds. Flame Fusion and Pulled Synthetic Colored Gemstones should cost around the same price....and you will find that they are much lower in cost than Flux Synthetics because they are made cheaper and faster in the lab. None of them are rare at the end of the day though, so the rarity classification does not come along with the price.

      There are a number of Corundum (Sapphire/Ruby) synthetics of which the Verneuil Process (Flame Fusion), can comprise a significant share. Essentially a Verneuil stone can contain curved colour striae, as well as included air bubbles and several distinct absorption wavelengths on a spectroscope. Flux or Czochralski (Crystal-Pulled) stones also possess their own identifying characteristics - the former can contain undissolved flux particles, and the latter, curved striae in addition to looking unusually clean.

      They come back from testing with results saying they are both diamonds (the same) but the one difference being the original diamond/carbon seed was grown into the same final diamond product differently. What the lab test show is a slight difference in the crystallized structure, some lab grown could pass as earth mined but when the tests the chemical make up guess what they both come back identical.

      It often depends on the supplier you contact - sometimes there are wholesalers who sell directly to jewellers (and sometimes the public) at reduced prices. For instance, a jeweller might buy a 1.05 carat African Ruby for $2100, then put it into a ring that costs them $1500 to make, and then sell the whole thing for $7000. There are several suppliers in each city around the world (and online), who cater to just that.

  • @matthew46502
    @matthew46502 6 років тому +2

    They are not the SAME- Growth Patterns and Trace Elements are Different...if they were the same, then there would not be Phosphorescence Spectroscopy Machines to tell naturals and synthetics apart. In addition, strong fluorescence can make a stone's Cut Pattern appear oily or cloudy. That is the look you get with most 1.00ct+ synthetics. This is also why most synthetics are being used more as diamond melee and being mixed up in the market today. Quality/ Clarity has nothing to do with it when you're growing diamonds with just Carbon (such as synthetics.) I would assume that without trace elements colliding with carbon crystals over a long periods of time, you would not have to worry about a Clarity grade in synthetic diamonds (unless they contain high amounts of flux metal inclusions.) IN THE END....a diamond's price is assessed by RARITY ALONE....Lab Created Synthetic Diamonds are NOT RARE and not hard to come by. If the Global Diamond Mining Industry stopped mining because of synthetics, that would truly increase the price of a natural diamond because no one would be able to get one at all. With that said, there is a place in the market for the synthetic diamond (just as there is for emeralds, rubies, sapphires, etc.;) but it is not anywhere near a Natural Diamond. I guess you're going to tell me Colombian Emeralds and Synthetic Emerald are the same next!

    For personal preference, I still prefer natural gemstones (comparison is like natural mineral water vs manmade filtered and added minerals into water). The natural imperfection and inclusion give the added value to my liking.
    I own a manmade perfect gemstone without knowing at the beginning, and there’s something unexplainable about it that I dont like as much as other stones. I quickly got bored with it as opposed to other stones which I love to watch.
    HOWEVER, i may support lab gemstone for the fact that unethical labour still occuring in many places i believe? If all are ethically sourced, labours well paid, nature is somehow preserved, then I will continue to value natural stones more.

      Lab-grown or synthetic diamonds (not simulants) and natural diamonds are both made of almost 100% carbon in a cubic structure; therefore, it is the same. The difference is that one is formed in nature and the other is grown in a lab.
      Gem laboratories; such as, GIA are able to identify and separate the two stones by recognizing the variables in growth structure from an atomic level. This is not done by a simple microscope as you are insinuating. Instead, it requires complex and sophisticated equipment along with trained industry professionals. Many jewelers are not able to recognize the difference with the naked eye alone.
      This information can be found from credible sources by a quick Google search. Here’s a link about it directly from GIA if you wish to learn more.

      Here’s a direct line from the link: The material ‘diamond’ is defined as carbon atoms in a cubic structure; both natural and synthetic diamonds are made of this material.
      This UA-cam channel’s playlist is to help educate people in the market so that they are aware of more modern options vs. traditional ones. It is not made to deter people from choosing one or the other. It’s up to them to choose based on their own personal preferences as the choice is theirs to make.
      You’ve also mentioned in another comment that I “have a bunch of lab gems to sell obviously, or just want youtube money, Gem Labs would laugh at him.”
      - Yes, I run a jewelry business, but I also sell natural diamonds by request quite regularly. We’re not bias against one or the other. You are welcomed to shop natural diamonds with us if you prefer natural over lab-grown.
      - We do not monetize our program to gain "UA-cam’s money." That’s not the business we’re in nor do we care for it.
      - Lastly, I’m a GIA Graduate so the information that I’m providing is what was taught to me.
      It's not made up out of thin air.
      Hope this helps.
      Thank you,
      Michael

      Unless you can tell with the naked eye it doesn’t matter. If you have to resort to looking at the atomic structures that’s grasping at straws as eventually technology will improve and that difference will fade.

      BOOM!
      I work at a jewelry store, and even with my discounts, I prefer lab grown over earth grown.
      They are often prettier stones at a fraction of the cost. I prefer them because, THEY ARE THE SAME GEMSTONE!
      I educate my customers each day on this topic, comparing gemstones to roses. A rose in your yard is natural, a rose from a store is greenhouse grown. A rose is a rose!
      Thank you for this video!
      And for your amazing response to the previous reply.

      @@jackussery2184 Many of us here are in the industry - I personally prefer natural gemstones, as some of them are exceedingly difficult to replicate in a lab - for instance, Australian Parti Sapphires. Despite what some people think, Synthetic gemstones do have their place, especially for those who are unable to purchase a natural stone due to their own financial situations.
