      It not having an onboard sequencer still is something I can not go over. My interest in workstations, as opposed to simple synths, is being able to let the creativity glow and compose on the spot, without having to be tethered to a computer.

    Not a popular opinion, I know - but pianos are the least interesting thing a synth/workstation does. We're in 2019 - EVERY major brand does a wonderful signature piano. Yes, minor variances between the manufacturers, but really? A piano review?

    I listened carefully and IMO the Nord has the edge when it comes to piano, although between all them they’re so close that we’re splitting hairs. Choosing monitors or a PA system to play them through will also have a bearing on the tonal reproduction, so you’d have to ensure that they were each played through exactly the same system/set-up in order to achieve an accurate comparison verdict, even then it’d still be close.

    • @johnnyg9597

      I feel the Nord Stage is somehow closest to a real piano, I have been trying it in music shops and I really want one. The Roland has some "pad" feeling to the piano sound, Yahama is somehow thin sounding - lacking some character, and the Kronos piano sound "starts" funny, i.e. somehow not natural. ....difficult to explain.
      I have the Roland X8 and I like playing it, but I like the key-action better on the Nord and feel Im one step closer to a real piano somehow with it. ...my 5 cents. ;-)

    Rolands new Fantom has the easiest UI, very simple and quick access, has great sounds, the montage has a more in depth ui and you will spend more time learning all the features, they both sound great. I dont own the Nord, and the korg kronos is a beast (I sold mine for the montage) but has many layers deep in the ui, I love many of the korg sounds but may not be suited for all users. Its all about preference.

    Speaking from my own experience.... (and you need headphones to realize the dynamics that so many sampled pianos lose.) the Nord blows them all out of the water. The tone, especially when sustaining, is just like a real piano. None of the other hardware synths have been able to match that. I can close my eyes and feel like I'm playing a real piano with the Nord. And I've owned Yamaha, Kurzweil and Roland. If you go to Nord's site and listen to the different piano samples, they are all like this. It's pretty amazing.

      Daniel Eaton I genuinely don't know how people can't hear the difference. I've listened to countless demos, enough that compression or bad playing doesn't unfairly effect any one keyboard. To my ears, Nord is so far ahead of the competition that I have no choice in what to buy.

    • @TheBjp0001

      Similar to my experience - It took me less than a minute on the Nord in comparison to the Yamaha CP88 and Korg Grandstage and Kronos to realise that the piano sound is just so much more realistic. Particularly with the White Grand sound.

    • @danieleaton9988
      @danieleaton9988 4 роки тому +5

      TheBjp0001 funny thing, I still remember to this day, I went into a guitar center for something else, and decided to play the Nord off the cuff. I already had a Motif ES and a Kurzweil module I’d been happy with, but was just curious to hear some sounds and they let me borrow headphones, and I started going through the pianos and was just blown away at the uprights with the resonance turned on... completely took me off guard... I pretty much started looking for a way to afford a Nord that day.

      I' don't and I can't own a Nord Grand, and neither have I played one. But as a Piano student in my childhood, (studied it for about 6 years), I cannot agree more with the points Daniel and the others shared here. I'll most probably buy a Roland FP 10 which sounds decent especially for the price; so the need to find a good and affordable keyboard made me here countless demos online. Once, I heard a small peace from Rachmaninoff played in a Nord Grand and I couldn't believe it. It's unimaginable how wonderfully it replicates an acoustic piano, at the point that someone with experience and good musical ear can actually confuse the two. It's incredible indeed!
      Wish you all well!

  • @94808G

    I’d take the Roland or Korg for a live band setting, simply because the mids and highs are more pronounced. They’d easily cut through the mix and in the hands of a skilled player and sound engineer, do all of that without being overbearing. Nord and Yamaha take the cake for the most natural sounding. Nord has the edge on expressiveness, Yamaha has a beautiful warm sounding tone. However, these won’t stand out as much in a full
    band setting. And I’m only talking about the piano patches alright? Cut me some slack.

    All of these keyboards sound great. I think the Korg Kronos sounds best. I have a Kronos and I LOVE it! I would give the Nord Grand second place, and the Roland Fantom 3rd place.They sound very similar, but the Nord just seemed a bit warmer and more natural to me. I didn’t care as much for the Montage. The piano was almost too bright, and not as warm as the others. I own a Yamaha MOXF, and while it had some great sounds, the pianos are not nearly as inspiring as the Kronos pianos.

    If people comment that this or that keyboard is great, they should also say why, because it looks like people just have different preferences or perceptions.
    I have not sampled these keyboards much, but I have noticed that for some reason, many digital pianos sound like door bells to me, except for certain Yamaha digital piano settings; they have a piano sound where I can sense the hammer felt and wood. Maybe people like a loud, bell-like ring from their pianos, but personally I usually prefer the slightly softer sound. Or, maybe I only listened to the cheaper keyboards.

      I agree plus if you buy a Korg, you feel like you're in a desert wasteland, other than the user groups, Korg seems to be more about getting people to buy than support. With Yamaha and Nord, you get passion and support, Yamaha is everywhere, their head demo guy has even helped me once. Don't have the sound you want? Yamaha will find it for you. Roland is in the middle they'll fix issues but your better off with Roland Clan, who respond pretty fast to questions. Wish I could afford a Nord, but I'm sure they have something in place as people continue to buy them.

    Compared them all. Bought the Korg for a reason ;) as a performing keyboarder. But i admit the GUI and OS is not up to date. So, if you're not into yoga and just want a very versatile good piano, the Nord is the go-to keyboard. Great Kawai keybed (it's from the MP11), but i would prefer the Nord Stage 3 as a better comparison to the workstations. I love the sounds (have a Nord Electro just for access to the Nord Piano+Organ sounds - the other Nord samples are crappy as they lack velocity switching). Yamaha is nice and flashy (looks and sounds), but just not my type of instrument. For some reason i cannot explain, Yamaha never won my sympathies.
    As for Roland - I never played the Fantom much, but the RD-2000 (and had another RD myself for over a decade).
    My bottom line: Whatever you choose, just invest time to get to KNOW your instrument and program it yourself. And you will get the results you want. It's not just the keyboard, it's the keyboarder.

    The nord grand is probably the most accurate then the roland and korg are tied second and the montage was last but as far as other sounds. the montage has a killer string sound. All of these boards are going to offer a variety of patch sounds that will blow the minds of the listener. In the end its about ease of use and comfort level for the player. each keyboard will have pros and cons. Price also can play a big factor. the kronos is a little cheaper price out of all of them because of the release date. but overall all. these boards can sound fantastic mixed in a song or in a live setting.

  • @geoffk777
    @geoffk777 5 років тому +13

    In this demo, they all sound great--and honestly, all of them are excellent instruments. But I basically own three of them (the Kronos2-88, a Montage8 and a Roland RD-2000) , so I can judge a little. I love both the Roland and the Montage, and it's a close call between them. The Roland has a slightly better action, but the sound is really equally good for both. The Kronos is slightly inferior to these two, both in sound and action. The Nord Grand is probably an excellent piano--maybe even the best of th bunch--but it lacks the other capabilites of the Montage or Kronos, so at $3,500, it's expensive for what it is.
    If I had to buy just one, I'd probably get:
    - The Montage for general versatility and sound
    or, if I needed excellent sequencing and on-board workstation capabilities
    - The Fantom
    or, if I mostly just wanted a piano
    - The Nord, or maybe a Roland RD-2000 for $1000 less.

    Just sample all your favorites and throw em on the Kronos Hard drive. Play em when you want. LOL Everybody always has to have "The New". These overall still can't touch Kronos. Sorry. Did you know yamaha patches can be played on a Kronos? Research it. Already got the Original Fantom X patches on Kronos. Sounds better than the damn Phantom did. :)

      @@cap706 I meticulously sampled mine about 7 years ago. 48GB. I mostly use it in Halion. I know theres a dry version for Kontakt about 16.7GB downloadable out there still if you search for it.

    As far as I'm concerned, the ONLY fully fledged sequencer and therefore workstation here is the KORG Kronos. If you wanted an all-in-one keyboard that is. All the rest are performance keyboards/synthesizers (or stage piano's in the case of the Nord). Because wasn't the definition of Rich Formidoni on what a workstation actually is, great sounds, great effects and a sequencer when he revealed the KORG M3 back in the day?

      Hi john, I am on the cusp of buying a new board and it is REALLY a tough decision. Back in the day you went to the music store and sat down with the instrument. Its tougher now. Please don;t laugh but the last board I bought (I am also a guitarist so money goes between instruments (12 guitars 2 boards, 2 drum kits, 1 Roland V-Drums, one Pearl acoustic) the last board I purchased was a Korg Trinity - I still LOVE that board!!! (also have my old old (old) faithful Yammy DX-7 FM synth - you just can't synth FM synth (Ha!) But its time to up my board game - is there a particular reason you would go with the Roland? Is it based on the sounds on the instrument, ease of navigation? feel? I am assuming they all have nicely weighted keys.... I am pretty deeply into orchestral productions now, (including tracking). so more interested in fidelity of the patches to specific instruments (pianos, strings, brass, double reed, woodwinds, percussion) (I am a one woman orchestra! LoL) and less the 'synthy" sounds..this really IS a tough decision! My instruments become very much "mine". If you can spare a minute, I would really appreciate your thoughts. And of course I would never part with the Trinity or the DX-7 - I just keep stacking boards and buying guitars LoL - - i am going to take a good close listen- look at the Fantom....THANK you for your time and your thoughts

      Cynthia Klenk well for the Kronos is a amazing machine with absolute stunning sounds and possibilities. The downside is the interface. The text is tiny -and there is to much on the screen. The other side is that you can tweak and design any sound you want. The only reason for the Roland would be the interface. Sound wise you can’t go wrong with the Kronos. It was and still is a class on its own. BUT if you want stunning absolutely real orchestral sounds the kurzweil was for me the best out there but that micro size interface puts it down. It was unworkable. But orchestral wise it was absolutely for me the best. You have to consider what you want to do. Do you want to program? You can do that with the Fantom as with the Kronos. Do you want to program with a bit more ease of use I think the Roland would be a better choice now. Purely because of the interface. A really good feature with the Fantom is that there are no modes. So not a special program mode or multi sound mode. There is just one mode and you can do anything in that mode which make it a bit easier.

    This is a horses for courses game. If you want a workstation the Roland and the Korg are just fantastic. If you want something that sounds and plays like a piano you will choose something very different. They are all great keys. If you want a piano first and foremost, want to hang onto your hard earned cash, and avoid difficult conversations with your significant other do not under any circumstances demo the Nord. Been there, done that and got burned.

    Not a very fair comparison. Lots of distortion. Too many different players, recording, songs, stere spectrums, and FX. I was surprised how "woody" the Nord sounded. Fantastic! I felt like I was inside the harp assembly. The Kronos and the Yammy have the same ring on C2, which personally I found annoying. I have owned both and know them well. IMO, the Nord sounds the most like a real piano,but the Fantom seems the most suited for study work.

    Sold my Yamaha mortgage, bought Kronos, and few analogs. Much better, especially given what Behringer is releasing these days. Soon they will get the CS80 out according to the roomers.

    • @saladdays180s9
      @saladdays180s9 5 років тому

      The CS-80 is the one synth that will never have a satisfactory replacement. Behringer can tease on that one they want, but just like Deckards Dream, even when paired with a polyphonic aftertouch controller, will never have the creamy dynamics and magic quality of the CS-80. Just my opinion of course. Behringer’s doing a great job and I am curious of course to see if they pull it off. If they get that one right, nothing is sacred and there will be many who hope they stay away from violins.
      I have a couple CS-80s, and it was only after having gotten to play one that I realized what all the fuss was about. I had to have one and wound up with two so I will hopefully always have spare parts.
