The Thousand Year Door? Paper Mario 64? NEVER PLAYED ‘EM. But I have played what many consider to be the bad Paper Mario games, and well..I enjoyed them quite a bit actually. So, if I was able to enjoy games like Super Paper Mario and Color Splash as much as I did, I can’t even imagine how much I’d enjoy the actual good ones. So, let’s go all the way back to the very first Paper Mario on N64 and see what I’ve been missing out on.

Not many consider Super Paper Mario as bad these days. In fact from my perspective, fans consider it definitely as a good game at the very least.

Super paper Mario is my second favorite
Also thanks for bringing up the point on how leveling up works. I'm so sick of those certain people who clearly didn't play these games make it out as if you had to grind for exp in them.
I think it would be interesting for if the Paper Mario series were to return to the style of the first two. I think it’d be interesting to have Mario’s partners be obscure characters like the characters from the SNES version of Wario’s Woods for example as a way to experiment.
All the stuff you said about how revolutionary the combat system is once you get action commands really made me happy. I remember once when JoshScorcher made his Mario Spinoffs list and put Thousand Year Door and Mario and Luigi: Superstar Saga above SMRPG, someone asked him how he could possibly consider them better. I pointed out that in a way, both those games are more revolutionary for taking the concepts SMRPG introduced and expanding upon them, and this guy accused me of having never played SMRPG.

Oh Boy, this was a long comment to type but I will say this.
But for everyone and Paper Mario fans
I'm not a fan of Modern Paper Mario, I'm not a fan of Old Paper Mario. I'm a fan of Paper Mario as a series.
Now I never grew up with the last two Paper Mario games but I did play Super Paper Mario as a kid which was my first introduction to Paper Mario getting me hooked on the series/franchise and I'm glad to play it on my Nintendo Wii so many great memories playing it.
I would say this I really enjoy and love playing Paper Mario Sticker Star and Color Splash and I'm happy to give these two games a chance because of trying new things in the Paper Mario series/franchise sure I understand why OG Paper Mario fans want to go back to the original battle system and story heck I play Paper Mario 64 on the Wii U Virtual Console great game and a perfect way to start a spinoff/franchise but if you continue doing the same battle system and story it will get boring in my opinion.
I think Paper Mario Sticker Star and Color Splash version of EXP It’s more so a feeling of progression and self-growth more than lack of EXP. While yes Sticker Star and Color Splash lack EXP, it still has Mario grow by getting more HP Hearts, Coins, Secret Doors, and Extra Book Pages to store more stickers and for Color Splash it's the Mini Hammers to upgrade your Paint Storage and you get more powerful battle cards as you go on with the story even getting an HP Heart at the end of the Chapter/Big Paint Star which I thought was pretty cool and unique in my opinion.
I enjoy and love every partner in Paper Mario from Goombario, Kooper, Bombette, Parakarry, Lady Bow, Watt, Sushie, Lakilester, Tippi, The Pixls, Kersti, Huey, and finally Olivia each having unique and cute personalities to them.
Of course, not all the Paper Mario games weren't perfect, nothing is perfect, but all of them were still fun and exciting also cool to play all the way through.
I'm really glad to play Super Paper Mario, Paper Mario 64, Paper Mario Sticker Star, Paper Mario Color Splash, and now finally Paper Mario The Origami King in my humble opinion.
At the end of the day, we can all agreed that Paper Mario is a great and fun series/franchise that everyone can enjoy old and new that's the true magic of Mario games anyway peace everyone.
The problem with Sticker Star and Color Splash is you are rewarded with coins for a battle, and after a while you have so many coins that you don’t need to battle anymore and it gives you no incentive to want to battle enemies

I recently played paper mario 64 the whole way through for the first time recently as part of playing the whole series to prepare for origami king and to be honest I think paper mario 64 is better than the thousand year door since the game was a lot more consistent throughout where as ttyd fluctuates a lot more. Probably my favorite paper mario honestly.

Getting the action command star certainly makes a big difference, but so does the fact that you start getting way more options with badges at around the same time.

In the games coding the star rod doesn’t actually make him invincible just raises his defense immensely

I love the classic paper Mario battle system I'm surprised we don't have a Pokemon go style mobile game. Make the player Mario with a customizable color scheme put all kinds of Mario characters in the wild a gotcha system for deluxe characters. Items and badges possible to get in the over world but a store for specific items and bam!
Those are them fighting words if you think Super paper mario is bad.

ive been in an rpg kick since KKonatine started, just finished bowser's inside story for the first time and honestly PM64 is high up on the next one to play. it's such a comfy time and this video is just pushing me more to rev that fryer up!!!!

There's something on PM64 that makes me like it more and think it is better than TTYD but I don't know exactly what... like, TTYD's battle system is overral better than 64 but still...

I love the first 2 games, super paper mario was ok and so is origami king. But they are still far off from the originals. I hope they take a note from Bug Fables for their next game, that game felt like a true paper mario game just without mario :)
Love your vids for the longest time but with every new video you seem to have lower energy and your voice comes across as monotone and boring. That would be my only complain, you're awesome KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK!!!
My problem with the new entries is less about their quality and more how they continue to make it such a horrible series to like in any capacity. Everyone just shows loyalty to what they think makes the series and with Origami King showing no signs of stopping with the new approaches I’m fed up with it. Pick one and stick with it. No one can just like the series anymore, the more different you do the more divide there is in the fanbase over what works.
