@@grah7187 Also the practice tests provided on the Hunter website are quite a bit easier than the real one so if you can and truly want to get in, ask your parents for a Hunter High School Examination practice workbook, even if you don’t get in, you can use it for the SHSAT (what i am doing now.)
after about two years, this video is a source of memory for me. you could probably find my replies to comments from a while ago, from when i was studying for the hunter exam all the way to when I was rejected LOL
but my primary reason for commenting here is to tell all of you that it is okay if you don’t get in. after my horrendous failure at the hunter exam, I grinded for the shsat, and will now be going to Stuyvesant HS in the fall. moral of the story? don’t let your setbacks define you. I admit, if it wasn’t for the smack in the face I got after receiving my hunter hs rejection, I probably wouldn’t have came this far. and you can too. whether it’s through hunter, or a normal high school, you can do it either way.
I believe in you all wholeheartedly, but make sure to also believe in yourselves.

This video gives me so much hope! I'm waiting on my state test scores, I think I did pretty bad on my ELA test. Let's hope I qualify, I have invested hours into studying.
Wishing you luck! I was accepted this year and my main tip is to be prepared. Math was really hard but what matters most is the writing part. Be prepared to write really dramatic and emotional. Make sure your writing stands out. Kweller Prep is really good for prep books.

i wish you luck :) ! i got in this year as well and definitely, being prepared is the most important ! im not sure what your strongest suit is (math or english) but for me, i mostly had to prepare for math. at the end of the day, your writing is was determines if you get in. make sure to write captivating essays that show personal growth. highly recommend doing practice test, yes kweller prep is good for prep books but some of the preps are extremely pricy so i would recommend just searching up the several hunter practice tests that are available to you and watching A BUNCH of the kweller prep videos or other videos on the kids who got in and tutors talking about the school. i know sometimes it may seem hard to study but trust me, getting in WILL pay off, its an amazing community and genuinely so fun :)
remember, if you get in, thats amazing ! if you dont, there are many other amazing schools in nyc ! i really hope to see you next year, i believe in you, you can do this

I’m going to take the exam this month, so what should I expect?
im going to take the exam this month too, but what i shoudl tell you in order to get into hunter, you must atleast score an overall average of atleast 80% on math and ela. once you make the cutoff (basically if you make the minumum score for the multiple choice) the graders will read your essay, if you essay is in the top 175, they will let you in. make sure to NOT use contractions in hunter essays (contractions are you're wasn't and instead use you are and was not). dont also use dialouge in hunter essays too. try to keep everything in 1ST PERSON!!! (dont use words like "you", "you are", etc...) . for your introduction paragraph make sure to start off with a sentence that grabs you reader's attention, try to make a little scene of a story with sensory details. like if the writing essay was to describe ur kitchen, your first intro sentence could be how the pans are sizziling and the aroma of the fresh and delicious food fills the air. this will grab your readers attention, also make sure to use lots of sensory details, so be detailed. make sure to have a runoff in your introduction. lets say the topic is whats ur favorite book, then your runoff wouold be two reasons why (book) is your favorite book. example: "The book "Tales of Grimm" has celestial tales of two children going through mysterious quests. These quests allow the kids to lurk into a mysterious fantasy and mystery, pursuing my love and interest for this book." u could see my example run off has two details, the book is mysterious and is a fantasy. for your body paragraph, dont start out with, "Tales of Grimm is my favorite book because of its mysteries." this is because hunter graders dont want you to restate your runoff, so instead try to start ur body paragraph with some sensory details. you could say "The kids lurk into the dark, gloomy cave. Ice crystals dangle over them while the faint screams shallowed in the cave signal death." next in the body paragraph, you could want to write more on how this book excites you, so once ur done writing the sensory details, relate this book back to yourself, how did you feel when you were reading this book? did this book seem to effect the environment around you, and while your explaining this remember to use sensory details. do the same thing with the next body paragraph with ur second reason. OOOOKKKK!!!!!!! CONCLUSION TIME!!!!!!! ok so for your conclusion, try to restate everything in your body paragrpahs and intro but with a DIFFERENT APPROACH. so i could do: "The book Tales of Grimm provides several stories that will give the reader a ripple of thrills. The unsolved lore and the fantasy provide the reader an experience that will get them on the edge of their seat." BUTTTTTTTTT!!!!!! THATS NOT ALL FOR MY CONCLUSOIN! at the end of the sentence of a conclusion, i have to leave one impactful sentence that leaves an impact on my reader. lets say our topic is to describe ur kitchen and why ur kitchen is so special to you. i would end my essay with: "Every kitchen is different in its own ways, and no matter the condition of anything everyone should learn to be grateful for what they have". as u can see this sentence is very impactful as it teachese a lesson how to be grasteful while staying on topic about the kitchen.
extra tips for hunter essay:
try to improve your vocabulary and use context relevant words
im not really good at grammar so i RALLY REALLY REALLY RECCOMEND YOU CHECK OUT KHAN ACADEMY AND LEARN SOME ENGLISH LANGUAGE RULES FORM THERE such as syntax etc

I go to hunter currently, all I can say is the math is pretty hard. You should definitely study a lot for that. When it comes to the essay I’d suggest using lots of descriptive words. The reading section of the ELA is pretty easy, you’ll have to look closely at details sometimes but it’s not that hard
I am pretty surprised, but I got in. I thought it was going to be a rejection letter because I guessed on about 4 questions in the math portion. Seeing all those kids made me really nervous so i was sure that I would get rejected.I'm super happy I got in. My advice is to mostly focus on timing yourself during the test. Don't leave the essay for last sonce its crucial that you have enough time to finish writing a good essay. For me, english was the easiest and while the math wasn't incredibly difficult it was still a bigger challenge than tehe english portion.
Update: I went to take a tour of the school and Im going to the school mext year.

I took this test 3 years ago, got into the last 500 of the 2000, but they said my essay wasn't good enough, so I wasn't part of the last 200. Kinda hurt, but I just got into Bronx Science, one of the 3 oldest elite specialized high schools, and one of the most prestigious high schools in the nation, yesterday, so I ain't mad anymore. I was salty back then though for sure.
I know that you said that you are no longer salty, but I would like to reiterate. Don’t feel bad, you got into the last 500 out of probably 4000-5000(they say 2000 students but way more typically show up). Also, within the 500 it is based on the grader, it is subjective for example, i got waitlisted recently, had someone else graded my essay, I may have gotten declined or accepted, who knows. Again, don’t feel bad, getting into the top 500 is still a major accomplishment.

Not to be cocky I took the test around 2 years ago and it was super easy. I got accepted but I honestly thought there were better opportunities so I didnt go to the school
