this is my favorite ep of two and a half men yet
Nice
With vinegar, I've personally found that etching works so much better when applying the vinegar directly to the blade by rubbing it on with a cotton (makeup removal) pad as opposed to soaking the blade in a container of vinegar. A few small drops of dish soap mixed in the vinegar will make sure to get rid of any surface tension between the vinegar and the steel so that it evenly coats the blade as opposed to it tending to pool up in random areas (credit for where I first learned these tips from goes to Nick W 👍). If you want to get extra fancy pants, etching with lemon juice (also cut with a few drops of dish soap) after a vinegar etch will bring out even more details and color in the hamon.
It's also a good idea to never etch right after using acetone. Acetone is good for cleaning off heavier stuff like grease and grime etc, but not for preparing a blade for etching. I've also found that cleaning with acetone should be followed by cleaning with denatured alcohol, or even rubbing alcohol, because acetone will leave a bit of residue whereas alcohol will not. If you try to clean a window with acetone as well as alcohol and you'll see the difference between. Just my $0.02, take it for what it's worth :) . It's turning out nice though, looking forward to seeing how it finishes up. 👍
Jelte Woestenenk - IMHO, if it's done well it can look much better than a hamon etched in FC. Many (but not all) hamon etched in FC tend to have a dark and muddy/dirty look to them (again, just my personal opinion), while a hamon etched using vinegar can look "bright" and frosty. There are a lot of variables to how the final polish and hamon turn out, but doing many short etching cycles with a weaker acid such as vinegar brings out the subtle details a lot better than a longer etch in a stronger acid (or even a long etch in a weak acid).
I've seen some guys do multiple etch and polish cycles using a very weak Ferric Chloride to water mix and they have turned out very nicely. It's just something you have to experiment with to see what you like best. Some guys use something like Flitz or Mother's Mag to polish after the etches, some guys use a loose abrasive like 1500 grit silicon carbide power or pumice powder, some guys using both and then more to polish. It can be as simple or as complicated as you want to make the process, but it all depends upon the specific result you are looking for in the final hamon. Once again though, I personally like to apply warm vinegar by hand with a cotton pad for a few minutes, then neutralize and polish of the oxides, clean the blade and then etch again. I do that for as many cycles as it takes to get what I like, and I may do a few lemon juice etches after that, just depends. FWIW, these techniques are all western "hybrid" polishing methods, not traditional Japanese polishing as they don't use any acid to etch but instead many special and natural stones and pieces of stone. Hope that helps
Those are some nice grinds!
Hamon is super close to the tip there guys
Great video...thanks guys!
another quench? Great video.....have fun guys!
Vinegar definitely works. I etch in apple cider vinegar overnight. Seconds in Ferric Chloride=Hours in Vinegar
Very nice
I missed why you did a water quench instead of oil quench...
So...why??
Also, why make the blade so thin?
Elastic and plastic deformation at its finest.
How big is his belt grinder motor looks massive!
You look like you’re wasting away Liam! Need to bulk up on those carbs... like pizza!
...that you could eat in slow motion.
...during a cinematic sequence.
:)
Why no spine bevel?
Vacation or playcation!
Forgot there are 3 knives
the best wqay to degrease the blade is with toothpaste. works wonders
How tall are you
Put it in instant coffee and the edge will darken
I wonder if lemon juice would be a more aggressive enchant ? It could be to harsh, I believe Walter Sorrels uses it on his swords. It looks very good as is though. 😎
make videos arm wrestling challenge!!!
Didn't someone say that it would be funny if it warped

No, below here....
I would have cut all of my fingers off by the end of the video.

Hand sands.
Just saying.
Tehcarp He also has a very Zen-like aura when he does it too. Not his first time.
