So my french horn mouthpiece was crusty, musty, and dusty. BUT BOY it didn’t allow me to play good. I dropped it in soap and water to let it soak Did the trick
Bar Keepers Friend foaming spray will work wonders on raw or plated brass. I came back to playing this year, after a break of nearly 20 years. My mouthpieces were all badly tarnished. A couple squirts of the cleaner on the cups and a little rubbing made them look pristine. To finish, I rinsed them off with a little water and alcohol, and dried with a microfiber towel.
Longer than 15sec, wrap the foil around the mouthpiece so its touching, keep adding more baking soda, let the water cool till you can stick your hand in, touch the foil to get electrons to transfer to the foil. Only works on silver.
I have a bronze cup. It’s supposed to be a matt finish but I’m one of those irritating people who needs something to fiddle with, constantly. I spend a lot of time on Zoom (Union stuff mostly) - so my mouthpiece is constantly shiny. Still sound rubbish though!
The sulfur (that bonds with silver and creates the tarnished looks) more easily reacts with aluminium than with silver thus reversing the tarnish without using any abrasive methods. Baking soda is just a catalyst and you don't need to boil the water, hottest from your tap will be enough. You can also leave leave the mthpc or instrument or anything silver for a while in such a bath without any adverse effects. Gently polish with silver cloth (which is very very slightly abrasive) afterwards to completely remove any tarnish left.
I used to sound bad. After cleaning, my mouthpiece is much shinier when I sound bad. Thanks, Scott!
you're welcome.

Does this work for trombone too?
Hey I played this background music as a solo last year, got a 1 😊
I polish my mouthpieces with silver polish when they get bad. They end up looking pretty much perfect.

Lol. Been there done that
What microphones and what recommendations would you give to record yourself playing?
If you get a different bowl and then out the boiling water in it and leave it for like 10 min it cleans it a lot better
Can you do this with a gold plated mouthpiece?

Still sound rubbish though!
Do you have any tips for fh players that struggle with high notes
Wait so I bake the mouthpiece in soda?
No no you get baked so da mouthpiece gets clean

How to increase your range by 3 more octaves (I heat my trumpet mouthpiece in hot water to get full range and make octave slurs easier)

What's the piece playing in the background?
Horn Concerto No. 1 by Richard Strauss
@@mellomagnum7120 Thank you!
@@rippy62 Of course. :)
What does the foil do?
The foil causes the chemical reaction with the baking soda that cleans the mouthpiece

use a stainless pot
I cant't focus on the actual video because of the Strauss Concert in the background which I'm currently learning Lul

Have you ever met someone with the same last name that you weren’t related to?
I haven’t yet
Why not just put it in the boiling water without the tin foil?
The tin foil causes the chemical reaction with the baking soda that clears the tarnish
I clean my mouthpiece with germ x lmao
