This gave me 'nam flashbacks. My entire degree rested on a 15,000 word final dissertation, with zero words written the night before it was due. Had primary research and sources prepared, just no paper. Sheer panic, fueled by cans of monster mixed with water to prevent dehydration. Besides the pain (like your DNA is being damaged under the stress and sleep deprivation), the worst part was getting halfway through and thinking "this could've actually been good if I started this sooner". Thinking about how disappointed my family would be at 4am. 15 minutes of sleep to prevent death at 5am, got up and continued. Finished an hour before the hand in, still at digs with no time to get it bound professionally, my only hope being a long-arm stapler. 3 years and tens of thousands in fees and living costs in the hands of a fking stapler. If the staple didn't go through the pile of trash that was my dissertation it would've all been for nothing. Prayed to every god I knew as I put my entire weight down on that thing. Got to uni in absolute shambles for the hand-in with 5mins to spare. Somehow got a 2:1 on the paper - to secure a 1st overall and entrench my bad time management habit - but that night shaved several years off my life expectancy. No stress at work has ever compared. If you got this far why are you still here, go do your paper

I once wrote an 8 page essay 2 hours before my college level English 2 class. Once in my social studies class, my group had to do a presentation on a chapter from the text book. I did most of the work and when we got to class we all found out that we needed a 15 minute introduction that none of us had written. In the span of time it took 3 groups to go in front of us, I flipped through the chapter and wrote that intro based on the subheadings in the chapter. The teacher himself clapped for us and asked if he could use it as an example in the future. It's the most impressive thing I've ever done in my life tbh.

for me it's usually 3 days before the due date for me to actually start writing so that I don't lose my shit halfway in because I know I can't make it

Goodnight everyone.” (they were all well-aware of what was going on and were very sympathetic). Then I sat down at my friend’s desk and started writing. I think a key point here for a lot of us procrastinators is found near the end of this video, "That wasn't my best work, that's for sure, but I finished it!"
Over the years I've found that my procrastination stemmed mostly from my own ego, my worries that maybe I'm not actually as good or as smart as I'd like to think. Procrastination was a way to distance myself from my work. If I did well enough then it was proof of my intellect, but if I did badly, I always had procrastination as an excuse for my shortcomings. However, when it comes to doing my own personal projects (writing a book, etc), I don't have that pressure of the deadline to force me to do even my subpar work. I only have procrastination to protect me from discovering the truth...that maybe I'm not as "smart" or "special" as I'd want to believe. Still trying to fix this issue myself.

    • @moethemoon
      @moethemoon Рік тому +7

Hmm you know that’s really interesting. I’ve always pondered about the sources of procrastination. I once heard someone theorize that it comes from being irreverent to authority and given obligations. While that could be the case, I personally feel like that’s something more juvenile, like when you didn’t wanna do an uninteresting book report in high school and decided to read the sparknotes instead. It’s a completely different ball park when you’re in college for a field you ACTUALLY have interest in. Then that reason for procrastination is nonsensical, because I genuinely think all my classes are useful or interesting.
For me I don’t know if it has to do with ego.., I was smart as a child (as I was told; I never fully believed it) but I’ve always been aware that the application of my intellect would decline with age. So regardless of what grades I get, and they’re usually over 80, I still think I’m not as smart as I’m made out to be. But the worst of it is that I’m always rewarded for my procrastination with good grades, so my brain sees so incentive to change the habit. I convince my dumbass that I work better under pressure when it’s not even necessarily true (when I look at the way I tackle my dopamine inducing hobbies it’s totally different- too much pressure or boredom completely puts me off).
I guess from me it’s really a matter of brain chemistry. Procrastination permeates every aspect of my life. I do not like to sleep or eat. In fact I’ve got to consciously remind myself to eat or acknowledge cravings because I get no indication that I’m hungry until it’s too late (I start shaking). I only sleep for the prospects of having nice dreams, I love to dream, but I begrudgingly admit my body needs it. I resent having to do these things for survival when I want to do other things that are much more interesting. And it’s such a struggle to know you have obligations, wanting to do them but not being able to do anything. Makes me wanna crawl out of my skin. It’s real hell. But maybe that’s ADD

Here are some tips I've learned from procrastinating long essays:
    1. Quantity over quality. Focus on meeting the required lengths/word count so you at least have something to turn in, before using the extra time to polish your essay.
    2. Write down whatever you think of. Even if it's the kind of thing you'd delete once you look back at your writings. We're out of time so we need to focus on turning in the assignment on time, so write down everything. It's like writing a story. If it's about a meet cute at a coffee shop, you don't need to start with the girl's morning routine, how she chooses her outfit, how she borrows her dad's car to drive there because her sister is using her car... These are all unnecessary details, BUT, if you're trying to meet a certain word count, then you're going to need these. Do the same for your essay. Write down ALL the unnecessary details and polish them later if you have time. A C+ grade is better than a F because you didn't turn it in on time.
    3. Organize your essay into paragraphs and write an opening/thesis sentence for each paragraph and assign it a specific word count first before writing anything else. This way you'll know how many words to write for each paragraph in order to meet the word count requirement, and it'll help you organizing your thought process because all-nighters tend to make you forget where you plan on going with a certain idea.
TL/DR: Quantity over quality. Your goal is to reach the word count requirement. Worry about its quality after you have something to turn in.

I once started an assignment as the teacher was collecting it. It was homework for 8th-grade science class, so it didn't hold that much weight, but the scenario itself was exhilarating. I had to write 24 definitions on Quizlet to match 24 images about the chapter we were covering that week. When I realized I was about 1 minute away from having nothing, I frantically began writing down definitions. By the time she got to me, I only had around 7 or 8 definitions completed. I was doing it on my phone since I didn't have my laptop open yet and she was just checking for completion, but that may have helped me. When she came to check mine, I started at the top, scrolled through the first few, then quickly scrolled all the way to the bottom, and instantly went back up. The blank definitions and images didn't fully load, so she couldn't see that they were incomplete. Once I scrolled back to the top, I just stayed there. She just nodded her head and went to the next person. I got a 100% on that assignment.

The best paper I ever wrote has an insane backstory to it.
It was Writing and Rhetoric II and I was 18, we had to write a paper about our towns history and base it off of our own research from historical places in our town (I chose my topic related to medicine which I was warned by my professor that it was a total pain in the ass).
The paper I ended up writing was a 200/200 and was given praise from my school. My professor even recommended that I submitted to the downtown library to have a chance at having something officially published made by me…and I was the fourth best essay out of over 70 submissions, but unfortunately they only wanted the top two.
    Now here’s the kicker.
Since this was my second semester, my young fuck-all attitude got to me saying “it’s just two months of work and all I need is a week, I’ll be fine”…well a week turned into twenty-six hours and I had NOTHING.
So basically I speedrun the fuck out of my essay and research, literally breaking PB’s and finding new strays to lower my time on the fastest essay I ever wrote…my favorite part was arriving at one of our historical hospitals at 2AM asking for research (thank god their history was plastered all over the building).
I ended up finishing the essay with NINE MINUTES to turn it in and all I could really think of was “well…I met expectations”.

I never got overwhelmed enough to be pushed to tears because I did this SO often. I always knew I had ADHD, but I had no health insurance at the time or knew that there were resources that could help me. The hardest thing for me to pass was math. I had to take a reduced schedule just so I could focus on ONE class. I would drink redbulls/rockstar energy drinks and get all pumped up and let the adrenaline take over. Now I am 30 and was recently properly diagnosed with ADHD. I'm just glad I survived college and now have a "real job." I wish I could have gotten a masters, and the thought of getting one still appeals to me, but idk if I could get through a Master's if I was barely able to get my BA.

Currently writing my first ever thesis (30 pages/ 15 000 words) - it’s due on Monday. I have procrastinated - gotten an extension - and continued to procrastinate. Thank you for this realistic video because I’m so over myself and I don’t understand what’s wrong with me. You’ve given me the motivation to just get it together haha. I hope you’re doing well 🤍

I was about to comment the same; I got diagnosed right before college graduation, and it explained sooooo much for me. (Though it was too late, in many ways. 😂) In any case, really grateful you depicted this so honestly. Every assignment submitted as a procrastinator is an accomplishment: to live this weekly for YEARS takes more resilience than people realize. It can take a toll on you, too. I hope you’re gentle with yourself for that and I hope we all find ways to a more sustainable pace. 💛

I did my 15000 word Masters Dissertation in the 4 days before it was due - handed it in 10 mins before the deadline, the moment I finished writing up the references. That was all the writing and all the research. Got a distinction - the stress still wasn't worth it.

I’m a Psych major in college, and have been diagnosed with ADHD for at least a decade now. This certainly looks like dysfunctional execution, although I can’t confirm it either. I know I’ve had my fair share of situations like these, but I always somehow end up over performing due to the time pressure.
