- In this video I show you how I sketch and draw faces. I cover basic concepts and techniques that'll enable you to draw better portraits. For this tutorial I have used Clip Studio Paint but the methods explained in the video apply to any medium, so feel free to use paper and pencil, the iPad Pro & ProCreate or anything else you have!
(Please keep in mind that this video focuses on the technical aspect of drawing faces. I wasn't trying to create a nice and appealing illustration.)
I hope this drawing tutorial helps you in becoming a better artist :)

Have you ever painted with oil paints? 🙂
Yes they r really gd , but I don't prefer them personally 😹
Yes and I got some on my hands...and it wouldn't come off xD
@@bucketthief5197 isn't oil toxic? I mean when you inhale
Noo .. wish i could
They're my favorite medium because it makes the pieces I do go by so much faster. I can finish a portrait piece in 3 hours in oils vs the 9 it takes in the medium i use most often (colored pencils)

Circles are not hard to draw. (For me) This is just my opinion.😓
This is the first “drawing faces” tutorial that I’ve actually found insanely useful. Took my reference drawings from a 5 to a 10 instantly

I’ve been an artist all my life, and even with all my knowledge, talent and skill, when i draw people it’s hit or miss, either I draw the face realistically the first time and I love it, or I cry and get frustrated and redraw for weeks because I can’t get the proportions right. This video helped me draw a portrait I’ve been trying to draw for a month, in an hour. USE THIS EVEN IF YOURE AN INTERMEDIATE/EXPERT AT FACES
I've been an artist all my life too. Even though I love drawing portraits I find it difficult to get right ratio. Art is hard and expensive but it is my identity. Hope I can get better with this video
i personally have a problem with chin. i'll never draw the chin the right way. what helps me personally, is to take a pic of my sketch and then bring it to photoshop and lay it on top of the original reference pic, then i crop out each feature (ear, eyebrow extr) and fix it on top of the reference, until i compose my "second version" of the sketch. that's how i see where my mistakes are and how to improve. sometimes when i ask for critique, people can't see all of the mistakes but with PS you can apply this technique. i mean, i would have never noticed that i had a problem with the chin on each portrait if i didn't use this method lol. hope this helps
I definitely agree with this. I've been drawing since I was 6 (40 now) and even took a multimedia illustrator course in the military and still this tutorial helps out alot. It's always good as artists to stay active in perfecting our craft.

can you do a tutorial on how to color hair? I’ve had a problem with this since the beginning, and I’ve been drawing for 8 years 😂
kat and more kat sameeeee 😂 drawing hair is a nightmare
Look at hair like it's a three dimensional shape. Study some photos where it is clear where the lighting is coming from. I find it easier to go light to dark.
Try doing several drawings that focus on just the hair
Of course I'm not a pro like he is these are just some tips for you until he responds :)
I usually just follow these steps and it turns out fine
-Colour flat with base colour
-Add in darkest shadows
-Add in other, more transparent and faint layers of shadows
-Add sharp then soft highlights
-Smudge and blur a bit, rather unevenly, so it'll look more realistic
Lol with my art style i just draw the shape of the hair and then just draw lines in the hair shape. Then i add a few strands and boom.
Do draw hair you just need to know how to shade with lines thats the easiest way
What i love about this video, you do things that remind me of constructing a face. Paying attention to the distance between the nose an cheek. Looking how shapes intersect. That is something that helps so much. Seeing theses techniques payed out step by step help a lot. Thank You.
Thanks! Glad you found the video useful. The relation of features and the distances between them help me so much when drawing. That's really what I wanted to show in this video. Thanks again for your comment :)
ericanthonyj hey whenever I hide my line work layer, it always looks really bad and undefined. I know you can refine it after, but you got any additional tips that you know or you use in your paintings?
Thanks to you i got my drawing confident back.. after 5 years of giving up.. 😁

This video was more like "how to correctly use a reference". Really useful, thank you so much.
hello! i am a self taught artist and i have been watching your videos for a while now! i work really hard on realism and anatomy but when it comes to creating my own art style, nothing good and satisfying comes out, but nor my realism is perfect- but i will keep rewatching your videos to get better, thanks !
Hey! Don't worry too much about your own style. It'll develop automatically over time. I always struggled finding my own style and thought it was the most important thing ever but it's really not. Focus on the fundamentals and learn the basics first. :)
I have the same problem. Looks super easy, but nearly impossible!
Usually i try not to draw in any type of style, I just draw in any way that fits at the moment. But recently I don’t know what I like anymore and I’ve been struggling with drawing anything.
Man, I am sketching so fast and effortlessly after this, I never learned a lot from tutorials, but this one is great!
I used to take 30 minutes to do a sketch (ikr?!), But after this tutorial I am doing sketches in 5 minutes!
honey i am skethcing in 2 hours more🤠
5 minutes? Wtf you kidding me? What do you sketch in that super small amount of time, an eye? 😂
@Hollie Ane that's why you're here
@@isisphoebedenc.delsocorro7807 there are some drawing exercises in which you draw in 1,3,5 and 10 minutes you should try to draw them without an eraser it will be difficult in the beginning but the sketches will improve after some time!
Comments like yours make me feel so confident that i should try it asap!
This is the best "How to draw" vide. Its literally helping me. In other videos people be like speeding up to process and it really annoys me
After watching this I realized that sketching the guidelines over top of the image is probably a really good way to learn shapes, perspective, and anatomy of the face. Thanks for the video, super helpful!
I’ve learnt more from this then all my high school art classes
I love how you explain every detail in your process, it really helps a lot. Thanks!
Hey Jorne, thanks a lot! I always think I'm over-explaining things to the paint it gets annoying, haha. Good to hear you liked it :)
Thanks for the vid! Very helpful reminders in there

I got a drawing tablet for christmas, just found you on youtube, awesome ;)
Hey, that's awesome! Much fun and success with your new tablet! And Merry Christmas to you 💜
your so lucky ! ! I hope I can get it soon 😭
If u ever give up on drawing give that tablet to me
Space time why would he do that lmao
One thing I’ve found that helps me a lot with drawing just about anything by reference is to look for shapes, triangles, circles, squares etc. . So I look for shapes not only in what I’m drawing but where there is nothing or the bg, so if I draw a face and the hair flows I look for the shapes where there’s no hair in the wind and draw them out.
30 minutes of a youtube sketch video taught me more than art class ever did. Thank you mate! Just got a new pen tablet, was tryna figure out how to draw with it...and I'm not really a person that draws so...this video helped me a lot!
I watched this on my TV, but logged onto the computer to say: This is the most helpful video !! Thank you for taking the time to go through all of this.
This is probably the MOST DETAILED video I've seen about drawing faces using a reference. I learned more from you these last 25 minutes than I have the last week researching techniques on how to improve my skills. thank you for this.
I've been drawing an designing for about 22 yrs and you this tutorial by far is the best one. You nailed alot of great points that beginners may miss when drawing faces.
Can we all just take a moment to appreciate how wonderfully skilled this person is, people say art can never be perfect, but all I have to do to prove them wrong is pull up this channel. Well done with your fantastic art. I have been working on drawing people for around 4 years now, never really found someone to teach me how to draw in the style I want. I have been struggling with anatomy as well but then I stumbled along your account and I have improved so much, I wouldn’t be at the skill level I am now if it weren’t for you. And one more thing, I am not sure if you already have it, but there is an app called DeviantArt, it is a positive app to post your art, I think you will be quite loved there. (Edit: I was reading the description and you asked for us to comment what we struggle with most, for me it is face shape.)
When will you be doing a tutorial form beginning to the end
The complete painting process? I can definitely do that but it'll be a long video :S
@@ericanthonyj I don't mind it being long I just have a problem with blocking out the colors and it bleeding through the other colors when I go to Shadow
@@ericanthonyj Could be 5+ hours. I'll watch for sure ✊🏽
@@ericanthonyj hey man I've spent thousands of hours in the pursuit of knowledge and improving so a 1-2+ hour video is no problem.
@@novaboom9920 if you're worried about colors bleeding over you can try using clipping mask. So you make one block out in black (for example the hair), then clip each layer on top of it (color, shading, ect).
My art teacher is so bad, so I was watching this trying to figure proportions out myself and this was SO. helpful! Thank you for showing me this.
I’ve literally worked through this tutorial 3 times. Watched thousands of tutorials and this is god tier. The difference in my work is absolutely nuts.
Thank you for the video and happy holidays! I just got a lil thing to say and that is this type of videos "the one you talk about your process and break things down" is better and more helpful than just cramming like 2 hours worth of awesome art under 10, this is just my opinion since i really enjoy watching your videos! Keep it up man and again happy holidays :D
Hey there, thanks a lot and happy holidays to you too! Thanks for the feedback, it's good to know what people enjoy more. I definitely know what you mean. In-depth videos are more helpful than 10 minute speed paints. Thanks again!
I remember watching this video about a year ago. I’ve applied almost everything I’ve learned from this video, and I have to say, my drawings have come a long way since then! Great tutorial!
Your technique is actually VERY helpful! Also your tone of voice is very calming and the things that you said about not rushing - it's like you follow my thinking process when I'm drawing 😄 I'm always very critical of myself, so the way you mix the technical part and the potential thoughts that might occur while drawing, really defeats the that inner critic within myself and helps to see what I actually need to focus on! 👌❤ Thank you!
Eric!! This video help me soooo much! OMG THANK YOU! Everything are more easy to find! The angles ♥️
this is literally the most useful tutorial i’ve ever watched, i’ll make sure to practise this everyday
I've just started drawing with a pacer and sketchbook, and while I've been learning about proportions through tutorials that talk heavily about guidelines, this helped SO MUCH more - so much so, that the sketch I was working on while watching is by far my favourite of the dozen I've done previously. It looks so much more realistic and similar to the inspiration photo I'm basing the sketch off already, without all the fancy detailing and whatnot... Can't thank you enough on this extensive demonstration, it was incredibly helpful!
This was soo helpful for me as a beginner artist, I've always had trouble drawing faces, and this helped me a whole bunch. Throughout this whole thing, I used a different reference photo as I know I tend to just follow what the person, whoever I watch, and copy it. My drawing actually turned out a lot better than I expected it would. Thank you!
I tried following your second way of drawing and im actually proud of mine ,this was really useful, im more motivated to reach my goal in doing this type of artstyle,Thank you!!😊😊😊😊
Just got my first tablet, is touch screen and I want to use it for my digital art, this is really helpful, thank you
Awesome! And thx so much, I'm happy you liked the video :)
I’ve been in a huge slump when it comes to my art, I can’t thank you enough for this video. This really brought me out of my dread and I feel better for drawing with you here.
Michael Hampton was my anatomy teacher, I learned so much from him, so I totally agree with you on getting his book. He does a really good job explaining how to do the anatomy on top of showing you how to layer it. He also suggested Loomis.
I took Comparative Anatomy with him too and when we were drawing dogs one day, one of the pics was from a site that sold dog sex toys... it was a dog mounting it, it was pretty funny because he was dead serious about us drawing it and someone was like really? And Michael said really. I was the only one who laughed because he did it to troll us. He earned even more of my respect that day.
Super nice approach with the distance and volume before illustrated. Quiet and well explained ! Thank you keep it up Eric!
Thx buddy! Really appreciate it :)
I literally struggled with faces today so this video couldn't have better timing. Thanks!
I was struggling with faces and how to put pencil to paper to actually make that first mark, this tutorial breaks down those barriers for me - Brilliant well done.
I really appreciate that you're not just sketching. The lines you're creating have purpose and you explain it very well in the video! I'm attempting to take myself back to basics to build a stronger foundation and anatomy practice is right up there. This helps greatly and I plan on referencing this quite a bit to remind myself to slow down and utilize landmarks and proper distances on the face.
Thanks again for a high quality video!
I really would love to see you do more drawing styles like the first one, the mainly lines rather than circular one, more measuring and stuff. That’s the way I’m going to start drawing from now on so I’m hoping to improve 🥺 I’d love just a sketch drawing video so we can draw along!! ☺️
Learned and helped alot.
On your video tutorial how to draw eyes this one was different. Now i know 2 ways to draw eyes.
Very interesting techniques thnx alot.
I'm 4 minutes into the video and I love the way you're explaining all of this, it's something I've seen few artists do when making tutorials. You teach really good
THANK YOU from the bottom of my heart for sharing this video. I have become so frustrated with trying to draw portraits that I stopped drawing completely for a long time. Today, while watching your video, I was able to sketch out a decent looking drawing during my break at work. I am really happy you mentioned how it's easier for you to draw using angular strokes. I discovered I am the same way and it's been disheartening for me to follow along to the many tutorials that use lots and lots of flowy, curvy lines. I can't wait to try out this technique again and again!
Thank you for helping us to develop our skills!❤️ I love your style🥰
Thanks so much! 💜
Omg thank you soooo much for this video. It helped me a lot with my drawings. It's very well explained.
this video was a blessing. I've been struggling with faces after focusing on figure and gesture for so long.
This is pure Gold. Thank you so much!
I recently started to learn how to draw and due to lack of materials i just went for digital art instantly (which feels like it makes it harder) and this breakdown is super healpful.
That is actually helpful thnx ❤ and merry Christmas and a happy New year 😸
Merry Christmas to you too 💜
Omg! I was so excited when I saw you uploaded this in my homepage aha
Wow, this is the tutorial that actually made sense. It felt like this is the way of sketching that actually fit for me, thank you
I've been sort of scared of tackling portraits for awhile now, and I just wanted to say you video helped me such an insane ammount. I've been an environment artist for awhile now, sticking to less organic things because of the difficulty involved, and literally in 30 minutes i've gotten x10 better. Awesome video my man. Absolute legend.
I love your tutorials so much they really help me develop my art skills, thank you!
Welcome :D
Thank you for your method, it help me a lot
I've seen a lot of tutorials on drawing faces but this is the first one that delved into drawing the eyes in such a fast and easy to remember way aswell as the lips. Thank you so much!
Thank you so much for this video. This is by far the most useful tips on drawing faces. Other vids on faces usually are pretty vague, don't explain anything, or explaining later/finishing details. Something that has always made it harder to draw faces was never knowing how to approach it, so this really helped!
I'm trying to improve in sketching and this helped me a lot! Thank you for this video!
Glad ya liked it :D
Your tutorials are so sweet, I really like how you break everything down, explaining it all and taking it nice and steady. It helps a lot!
Thanks Angelica 🙂💜
Thank you, this was really helpful!! It's the first time I've actually captured the correct angle in a portrait, I used the first method, the measuring of the distances and seeing things as simple shapes was really what helped me the most :D!
i just want to thank you for making this video.i am working on my digital art and i am planning on making it my career when i'm older.the little things that you said help me so much that it made me cry. i had been struggling with my digital art for the passed month and i really considered quitting.i came across your video when i new i needed to sit down talk to myself and watch other people work.you helped me a lot and i can't than you enough.i also had been drawing along with you and i had never seen my art work look so good.i'm looking forward to watching more of your videos and what i can learn from them.thank you again from the bottom of my heart.:)

I recommend trying out both methods even if you don't have much experience because I'm not that skilled or experienced, or maybe not even in the slightest, but still I ended up finding the second method much easier and my sketch turned out more accurate than when I used the first method.
I just want to know how you can draw in the reference that will make things alot easier 😭💔💔💔
I’m currently only 17 mins in and I can certainly say this is the best drawing I have ever done. You are always told oh yeah eyes in the centre of the face etc etc but somehow this has been quite easy to follow so far and I’m so happy I found this video!
Great video very helpful!!!!! 🙌🏽
Thx u dude best tuto ever
I watched this like so many times... And these days I'm sketching my portraits while watching to your videos... And I'm getting better everytime to draw free hand without rulers.... Thanks a bunch!!
This is literally how I draw portraits...from the first feature to the last, it the exactly same process I follow. This was so good to watch and realize someone else does things the same way I do. Kinda felt validated...thank you so much!! From locking in the eye brows first to drawing the nose curve to drawing the further eye first ....damn this was so relatable! This trick is actually fucking insane...I've always measured the thing I'm about to draw to the nearby features. I actually never saw it anywhere else but something I just started doing subconsciously over time but since no one has ever written about this in a book or tutorial (so far ) I always felt I'm probably not good enough yet to just eyeball stuff or you know aww people better artists just know how lines flow and shit. But this legit made my day!
Wow this was an amazing video, you actually taught me! I’m actually beginning to feel more confident. Thanks so much for this video
Great to hear that you liked it! Keep studying, the rest will come :)
ericanthonyj had followed your tips and actually went along with it and it’s coming up nicely, considering all my other portraits are SUPER bad... the guide lines helped a lot btw imgur.com/a/UCsPwm9 FYI my shadows aren’t perfect I know, just wanted to add more life to it.

@@ericanthonyj No problem I always admire your work. I hope to get there one day :)
This is the most helpful video on youtube. I rewatch it every time I draw a protrait and and it takes my drawings to a whole other level.
I'm someone who paints hyper realistic portraits digitally and i want to start painting more stylized portraits. I tried the two methods and to my surprise the second works better for me. Just the angle of the nose ridge and the line for the eyes is enough to get me going. Thanks a lot Eric!
You are a really cool guy. Very helpful advice 👍.
Perfect. NOW, I can draw a face.
Perfect. NOW, you can draw Nina and me. 🙂
Bro, upload some more videos! 😋
@@ericanthonyj Lol I just pictured a drawing of Me, you, and Nina.
Your instructions helped me to recognize certain things about my reference sketching process that I'd settled into and stopped thinking about. For example, I usually draw the whole outline of the eye, nose, or mouth before focusing on the curve of the iris, nostril, or lip. I think your technique may be more useful to help me remember to focus on what I see instead of what I think I know, which has always been something I've tried to do. Thank you!
This is probably the best video by far!!! I have been struggling with faces and trying to get better at it and there no other video that makes it so easy than this one! Thank you for making this video ☺️👍🏻
Thank you so much for this video❤️❤️❤️

You rock! super helpful tips!
Thanks Tom! Appreciate it :)
"It doesn't have to be perfect"
Thank you so much for this. I am very OC with my drawings that there are times they come out bad, I don't continue drawing it anymore. Yet thank you for the advise and tutorial. Keep it up, always!
This was put down in such a simple manner, in a way where I can learn how to do it on my own.
Good tutorial, much appreciated.
I really recommend drawing while he is doing it mine turned out so good I'm really proud of myself 😌
About CSP, agree with you. Best program for me :>
OMG, thank you so much, I usually just guess all the proportions and have zero clues on where to start, but you taught me something really useful! I didn't take any art courses but want to do architecture in Uni and you just helped a ton with my portfolio, so thanks again, your teaching methods are just what I need.
this is the most useful tutorial I've ever seen. I finally didn't struggle while sketching, everything went so clean and relaxing! thank you so much, I'll definitely recommend this one for the others who's struggling with sketches.
Really love your art and all your tutorials are very useful! I am learning to draw and I believe I am doing quite well with drawing from reference. However, I struggle a lot from drawing from pure imagination, as the proportion of things in face or the angle always looks wrong. At the end, it always ends with me copying parts of face from different references. Do you sometimes draw without a reference and how do you accomplish that?
Literally wanted to rip my hair out while doing this. But I think it turned out good! Thanks for the tutorial! I struggle a lot with sketches so this really helps!
I'm a person who never practice anything n try to be the best on the first try. I've searched a lot for sketching faces, I found yours very useful. My portrait after trying yours for the second time it matched exactly to the reference. 🥰♥️
I tried your second method as I have a fundamental understanding of how to map out a face, and it worked rather well. It was a bit janky at first, but easily fixed with a few tweaks, but overall, I was able to draw out a face faster than I have ever done before. I really like that technique, thx for sharing!
the best i´ve ever seen!!
i can learn 2 things at the same time!! english and drawing.
Thank youuuuuuuu ❤❤❤

Very Helpful, Could you show us a demo on painting on procreate please!!!
Yes yes, working on it!
I kid you not this video really helped a tons! I've been struggling for so long but the way you went through step by step how to observe and transfer the drawing into lines and shapes by paying attention to distances was super helpful! I also really liked that you added a more advanced option at the end. Will be back to learn the advanced steps after practice :)
wow i loved that you showed two methods; i always wondered how someone goes from doing a framework set up to just freehanding it and you did just that! i followed along myself and it was the perfect pacing. your tricks were really useful, thank you again for taking the time to break it down. 30 min well spent.
thank u Eric very cool
