Just crossed 150mi on these after picking them up a few weeks ago. A true game-changer in several ways as it relates to the health of my feet. I had been dealing with 5th metatarsal issues on both feet, and these shoes have significantly reduced that pain. He's a 225 marathon guy @ 43yrs old and runs in these almost exclusively excepting races, so they can be a great workout or even all around shoe for any level of runner.
Had it since it was released - agree wholeheartedly w/ your review. My review on RW: Phenomenal fit for my duck-like feet, w/ a cushioned - but not sloppy soft - stable feel. I’m reasonably light at ~130 lbs., but the sidewalls, saddle-like fit, and flared midsole, I’m guessing would pretty much accommodate much larger runners. They pretty much cannibalized the Rebel upper w/ the best features of the Mach 5 to make my perfect, and long-awaited, Pebax trainer - at a reasonable price, no less. My first Topo road shoe.
I mostly wear barefoot/minimalist shoes and bought these as soon as they released. As far as I can tell, these are the first, maybe only, reasonably priced premium-foam shoes with an anatomical toe box. I used the rebel v2s and have been trying to get some of the saucony models to work for me, but they all ended up too restricting my wide feet lol. With the modest drop, wide toebox, and light weight, these things are by far my favorite "traditional" shoe :)

I really love my Topo Athletic Specter shoes, and use them as a daily trainer. I used to get bad planta fasciitis, but switching to the wider foot shaped shoes, allowed my toes to spread, and helped me develop a stronger arch, so can run pain free, now. I have done 1200 km in the Specters, and they are going fine, apart from some splitting in the upper, on my right foot, which is slightly bigger than my left. I think they have another month or two left in them. The idea of the Cyclone 2's looks great, a light, fast responsive shoe, without forcing any particular running mechanics on you, which the carbon plate shoes tend to do. These are so expensive in Canada! $250. For reference, the Speed3s are currently going for $210 CAD. These sound great, but I don't know if I could justify trying them at that price.
I finally got Topo athletics Runventure 4’s for my 5-10K trail / obstacle runs, just to try out a similar show compared to Altra’s… It exceeded my expectations 👍🏽
Reminds me of the Takumi Sen. Wondering if I should grab whatever version of these is out next time I need to replace mine. Seeing as I’ve only run 50 miles in a few months, won’t be any time soon.
I second this motion. I Love My Pair Of CYCLONE 2! My review is on the shoe site. This is a must own light weight, speedy race day or daily trainer for people who need toe room. The upper is top end, and they finally Nailed midsole at Topo! Cancel your Endorphin Speed 3 WIDE purchase and get this lighter cheaper shoe.
Hey Kofuzi! Thanks for the video- I love your channel. I was wondering do you think you could use the Topo Cyclone 2 as a half marathon racing shoe? I don't like to use plated shoes for racing, and from everything this shoe offers, it seems like it might be able to function in that capacity? It might be just a bit too long of a distance though for it though... I used to race in the Launch 6 but looking for something new - I would appreciate any of your thoughts! Thanks!
Upgraded version of the boost would be floatride foam from Reebok in my mind. They use beaded E-TPU which is marginally lighter than traditional boost but probably not as responsive as Pebax foams. I heard of Topo before but unfortunately they don't ship to where I live. Sounds like my kind of shoe.
You are extemely knowledge and talk about your products im a easy way to understand. Looking forward to more reviews. i subscribed. I do have a question. do you do running plans for ultras? Like to train for a minimum ultra. Im at 33 miles at one time but mostly comfortable at marathon distances.
Completely unrelated to the video… but Ko, I know from watching your marathon blogs you’re a beer guy and foodie. You may want to check out Kishwaukee brewing in Woodstock on fridays. The beer is good and there’s a taco truck that’s really solid. They have a veggie taco too made with creamed corn and poblanos. It’s called El Chido tacos.
I feel this shoe reminds me a lot of the Nike Lunarlon racers from about a decade or less ago. I also know now that I needed to go down a half size because of length.
Man. Love your videos but I always end up buying another shoe after watching. Hope these companies are at least hooking you up for all the work you do!
I think Topo is better known on the trail side of things. My fav trail runners are all Topo, own four different models and they're all great. This may be the first road Topo I buy.
My favorite shoe of 2023! Interesting comparisons. I don’t think they are that similar to saucony. I love this shoe. I find the EP3 too soft, unstable, and takes a lot of work to run in Vs. Other carbon racers. As for the rebel, I would agree that they are similar as you described with the rebel having that bottoming out feeling while the C2 being even better the more you hammer it. I’m considering the C2 for a half marathon in 2 weeks. If all works out, maybe a full? If you can, snag the mtn racer 3 from TOPO (don’t know when it comes out) and test on the trails. Would be curious to hear your thoughts.
How does it compare to the EP3 or Rebel from a sizing perspective? I've been eyeing this shoe for a while, but having never owned a TOPO shoe in the past, am unsure about what size I should get. I read somewhere it runs a little bit large (probably because of the wide toebox, which I love) and as somebody who tends to be between sizes I'm debating going half down.
@@ElteHupkes I have a slightly wide foot. I would normally wear a size 9, but with my flat, slightly wide foot I usually wear most shoes in a 9.5. All that said, I wear a size 9 in the cyclone 2, 9.5 in the rebel, and 10 in saucony.
@@ericletasse5129which Saucony are you a Size 10 in? I am a Size 11 in Kinvara 13 wide (unfortunately still not wide enough, pinkies squashed), I am wondering if a 10.5 or 11 Cyclone 2 will work better for me
@@ericletasse5129thanks for sharing. Have you tried Topo Fli-lyte 5 and Ultrafly 4? I tried 11 and they felt ok (width wise). I usually go to 11 due to the width and I need 2E width most of the time.
Such a competitive market hard to stand out as a somewhat smaller company. Love their roomy toe box . pebax midsole that isn’t max stack without a plate is hard to find, just a few in this space in the market ? Streakfly competition maybe ?
Hey Mike (and crew), I love topos and am pretty comfortable during long runs. Could these be used for marathon running training? (super shoes aren't an option for me) I've used and loved Hoka Mach 4s for training over the last year for reference.
I would love to see it compared to the Altra Vanish tempo. Both footshaped fast paced shoes. The heeldrop is the biggest difference, and would be really nice to know how they compare
@@kofuzi the tempo is just the daily trainer of the carbon, from what I understand. I have been running a lot in altra provision shoes but no longer need the stability after I switched my daily footwear to barefoot shoes. So I am inbetween getting the Topo or a new faster altra
I ran in the older topo teraventure and I loved them. They had a very simple design with forest green and black but were extremely attractive. The follow up model was so dang ugly and I couldn’t get over it. Topo makes great shoes and their designs are getting sexier but lord did they have some ugly designs in the past. Glad to see the designs are getting more gooder looking. With so many good shoes, it’s hard to purchase something that feels good but is as ugly as a 1980s RV. I ran that pair of topo teraventure into the ground. Good long lasting shoes.
First time here thanks for the great video. I'm coming from the kinvara 13 which I ran my first marathon in and loved (and still love). The only downside for me is the narrow toe box. So I've tried a pair of altras (I use barefoot shoes daily so wasn't too concerned about the 0 drop), but I've not really liked them, too heavy mostly. So I'm thinking of trying this cyclone 2. Do you think this is a good kinvara 13 replacement ? I ask as the kinvara 14 is just a massive disappointment.
#MexicanGreetings Congrats Ko for going outside the norm and share other types of shoes. I think maybe this one can be paired with the Altra Carbon for a good one two punch. Lower drop shoes (or 0) don't get any love!
I have that shoe. it was my most underrated shoe of last year (with this Topo being my most underrated shoe of this year). but they're so similar that I consider them competitors more than complements
@kofuzi so would you consider it for a full marathon instead of the Carbon one by Altra? Maybe that's a good head to head video 😆 anyways thanks for being clear and including this type of shoe since it's not mainstream and most won't even give it a chance
these look absolutely amazing looks wise and spec wise. This is everything the rebel should be but better way better. I might be getting a pair. How high is the arch tho? I have tried on the phantom 2 and 3 and the Ultrafly and the arch on those shoes killed me. Im beyond surprised we don't carry these at fleet feet. but we do have the phantom and the ultrafly which tbh feel like every other shoe. As u mentioned this sound way better then the endophin pro 3 to me. similar underfoot feel but that upper on that endophin pro 3 just isn't it not sure why a uptempo/racing shoe has a regular daily trainer upper is wild.
I tried these on at a local store and the arch was way too high for me even with the soft midsole! If it wasn't so high it would definitely replace the rebel v2 as my favourite lightweight tempo shoe
Oh that makes a lot of sense the phantom and the ultrafly witch we carry in store the arch is way. to high for me. It sucks that this has a high arch as well. other wise it would be really nice
Thanks for this review. How would you compare it to the New Balance Rebel (V3)? Would someone with a very wide toe splay be able to run comfortably in this shoe?
@@kofuzi Honestly, this seems like the perfect shoe for my needs, especially after considering your (and others) reviews of the Rebel v4 (3s no longer available in Canada). I like the wide toe box as I have higher arches with widely splaying toes, but an otherwise width heel/midfoot. Unfortunately, for some reason, the Cyclone 2 is more expensive than the Saucony Speed in Canada. (In Canada the Speeds 3&4 retail for CAD $210-$220, Cyclone at CAD $250. ) I wish there was something that would replicate the Rebel 2-3 feel (and price). maybe the new Hoka Mach, but I've always had issues with durability in those shoes (with the exception of their trail shoes).
they absolutely need to produce and sell a Size 12.5 - MY SIZE (EU 47 1/3 precisely)! I was already going through online shops, ready to buy, but that's the only site they skip in their size chart 😢
Question…. How does the height of the ankle sidewall match up to the Specter? I returned the Specter because the ankle cuff came up to high… I need a shoe that has a lower ankle cuff.
I've had my eye on these since they were announced. I tend to be an Altra runner, and have had topo trail shoes. I like relatively low stack, but I'm curious to know if I could get away with these as a marathon shoe (can't justify the price of carbon for a 3:40 race) or if that will lead to trouble.
Topo lists this as a half marathon shoe or session shoe. I think it would depend on how heavy your footstrike is. If you could run a marathon in a Kinvara or an Escalante Racer, then this is also a marathon shoe for you
I’m hoping someone else in the comments can help out. I don’t have experience with their trail shoes (this was my first Topo), but I’m hoping to try one of their trail shoes next
@@adamfeerst2575 - I have tried Hoka torrent on trail and they don’t have enough cushioning after 31 miles. For 50 and 100 mile races, I would rather have more cushioning to save my feet a bit
Tony from Topo here, you might check out the Ultraventure 3, or if conditions are more technical the MTN Racer 3 coming in June is my favorite, a little more stack than the 2 and a new foam compound. While we're at it, like many of you, we also think Kofuzi does really thoughtful objective reviews! The feedback we get from all of you only helps us get better.
Is this good for long distance run on the treadmill or recovery run? I got the NB sc v2 & the ON Cloudsurfer shows but it was too squishy and clunky for a petite person like me. I like less squishy, less heel stack, and more ground feel. Now, I’m debating between the Topo cyclone 2 and Nike VaporFly 3. I have flat feet with neutral landing. What would you recommend?
@@brandonm4664 saucony tempus. I’ve used those for tempo runs and they feel good. It’s just a moderate arch profile, so if your feet are flat, it’ll take a few miles to break in
I feel that, but I generally try to avoid making comparisons to that shoe, as it seems the shoe everyone compares back to whenever they really really like a shoe
@@kofuzi you might consider my suggestion that when you recommend other shoes to go with zero drop, wide toe box shoes, those other shoes be also of that design. that way your runner readers won't make the mistake of getting shoes that would be too tight or cause injuries / bunions, etc.

these are the quirks of a smaller company in a global market, unfortunately
If I didn’t still have a 2nd newer Hyperion Tempo to use up, I’d try this now! My kind of shoe…..
I finally got Topo athletics Runventure 4’s for my 5-10K trail / obstacle runs, just to try out a similar show compared to Altra’s… It exceeded my expectations 👍🏽
This shoe is a absolute game changer. Never felt pebax cushion till now. lightweight yet so much spring and responsiveness in the shoe! Topo rocks!
Glad to hear that you’re enjoying it!
You had me at Triumph 20 and Kinvara 🙌
Reminds me of the Takumi Sen. Wondering if I should grab whatever version of these is out next time I need to replace mine. Seeing as I’ve only run 50 miles in a few months, won’t be any time soon.
I second this motion. I Love My Pair Of CYCLONE 2! My review is on the shoe site. This is a must own light weight, speedy race day or daily trainer for people who need toe room. The upper is top end, and they finally Nailed midsole at Topo! Cancel your Endorphin Speed 3 WIDE purchase and get this lighter cheaper shoe.
thats called compliance and resilience. terms of art. for the foam. being cushy and responsive.
And on the firm side as an option if thats your thing.... the adios 7, for even less money. Like well under a benjamin.
I need to try this. Sounds fantastic.
Great review. I've been enjoying this shoe the last few weeks for track workouts.
Great to hear!
Thanks!
yes
I’m afraid I’m not a coach and don’t write running plans
Completely unrelated to the video… but Ko, I know from watching your marathon blogs you’re a beer guy and foodie. You may want to check out Kishwaukee brewing in Woodstock on fridays. The beer is good and there’s a taco truck that’s really solid. They have a veggie taco too made with creamed corn and poblanos. It’s called El Chido tacos.
hey, that sounds nice
I feel this shoe reminds me a lot of the Nike Lunarlon racers from about a decade or less ago. I also know now that I needed to go down a half size because of length.
I think beaded peba is pretty different from lunarlon though
Please do a review on the Topo Specter shoe
Hey! Thank you for this informative video. How does this shoe perform compare to novablast?
Man. Love your videos but I always end up buying another shoe after watching. Hope these companies are at least hooking you up for all the work you do!
Amazing review!
thanks for watching!
I've wanted these since first hearing about them. These look tough.
Love the rebel v3
Topo shoes have replaced Altras as my trail shoes last year after several disappointing LonePeaks by Altra.
I think Topo is better known on the trail side of things. My fav trail runners are all Topo, own four different models and they're all great. This may be the first road Topo I buy.
this experience certainly makes me feel more interested in trying another Topo. I think a trail option could be a lot of fun
I am a Size 11 in Kinvara 13 wide (unfortunately still not wide enough, pinkies squashed), I am wondering if a 10.5 or 11 Cyclone 2 will work better for me
@@fransera I am a size 10 in the kinvara 13, 9.5 in the ride 15, 9 in the TOPO.
@@ericletasse5129thanks for sharing. Have you tried Topo Fli-lyte 5 and Ultrafly 4? I tried 11 and they felt ok (width wise). I usually go to 11 due to the width and I need 2E width most of the time.
The folks at Topo is taking it slow, but you said what can be being brewed right now at the HQ: A Carbon Racer Topo! :)
Such a competitive market hard to stand out as a somewhat smaller company. Love their roomy toe box . pebax midsole that isn’t max stack without a plate is hard to find, just a few in this space in the market ? Streakfly competition maybe ?
Hmmm. That’s interesting. They’re so different, and yet, I find myself agreeing with the comparison
Never heard of the shoe company before but the shoe looks awesome.
Hey Mike (and crew),
I love topos and am pretty comfortable during long runs. Could these be used for marathon running training? (super shoes aren't an option for me) I've used and loved Hoka Mach 4s for training over the last year for reference.
Big fan of the flylite4.
I like the older Topo shoes due to the zero drop. Hence, five pairs of Topo and eleven pairs of Altra.
You should look at the 361° Centauri if you liked this!
I would pair wit with the speed, but I need to cut out holes in the toebox to prevent blisters. The rebel is ridiculously uncomfortable there.
I’m not sure what shoe you’re talking about here
@@kofuzi saucony speed, nb rebel
Just grabbed a pair of Topo Cyclone 2s. Lets see what we got here
I would love to see it compared to the Altra Vanish tempo. Both footshaped fast paced shoes. The heeldrop is the biggest difference, and would be really nice to know how they compare
I haven’t tested that one. I ran in the Vanish Carbon, but not the tempo
@@kofuzi the tempo is just the daily trainer of the carbon, from what I understand. I have been running a lot in altra provision shoes but no longer need the stability after I switched my daily footwear to barefoot shoes. So I am inbetween getting the Topo or a new faster altra
@@kofuziwhat about the width of the Cyclone 2 compared to the Vanish Carbon? Is it wider and more accommodating?
I ask as the kinvara 14 is just a massive disappointment.
yes
Take a look at the Altra Escalante Racer. I had a pair of Kinvara 13 too but sold it, now mainly using Escalante Racer and VFF V-Run
I found the spector is even better than the cyclone and especially as a long run shoe..
Is the Cyclone 2 more stable in the heel than the Triumph 20?
how would you say outsole durability will be and on wet days is the traction?
these look absolutely amazing looks wise and spec wise.
Yes
@@kofuzi Honestly, this seems like the perfect shoe for my needs, especially after considering your (and others) reviews of the Rebel v4 (3s no longer available in Canada). I like the wide toe box as I have higher arches with widely splaying toes, but an otherwise width heel/midfoot. Unfortunately, for some reason, the Cyclone 2 is more expensive than the Saucony Speed in Canada. (In Canada the Speeds 3&4 retail for CAD $210-$220, Cyclone at CAD $250. )
I wish there was something that would replicate the Rebel 2-3 feel (and price). maybe the new Hoka Mach, but I've always had issues with durability in those shoes (with the exception of their trail shoes).
Can you review the new Decathlon KD900 (not KD900X, which is the carbon plated version)?
I currently don't have any plans to review Decathlon shoes
they absolutely need to produce and sell a Size 12.5 - MY SIZE (EU 47 1/3 precisely)!
I was already going through online shops, ready to buy, but that's the only site they skip in their size chart 😢
oh no!
How does this shoe compare to the Hoka Mach 5? They seem to be targeting the same niche.
Can you do a review of the Spectre?
I do not currently have plans to review that shoe
How long is your longest foot in cm and which size did you get?
I got my usual running shoe size, and it was a great fit.
Great video Mike! True to size?
Yes
Runs big for me. I’m a size 10 in a lot of shoes and 9.5 works best for me in the Cyclone 2 with still a lot of room in the toe box.
Question…. How does the height of the ankle sidewall match up to the Specter? I returned the Specter because the ankle cuff came up to high… I need a shoe that has a lower ankle cuff.
I did not test the specter
@@kofuzi how high does the ankle cuff come up?
I've had my eye on these since they were announced. I tend to be an Altra runner, and have had topo trail shoes. I like relatively low stack, but I'm curious to know if I could get away with these as a marathon shoe (can't justify the price of carbon for a 3:40 race) or if that will lead to trouble.
Topo lists this as a half marathon shoe or session shoe. I think it would depend on how heavy your footstrike is. If you could run a marathon in a Kinvara or an Escalante Racer, then this is also a marathon shoe for you
Thanks for the response!
Apart from Altra (and now I've learned about Topo), are there any other shoe brands doing the anatomical toe box?
There are minimalist shoes that do, but I am not familiar with those
Vimana Hybrid and Hybrid Carbon.
how about the insoles?...please discuss insoles on your shoe reviews...thanks
it's ortholite
Is the midfoot super shoes snug?
Eyeing this off for a month now, can't wait until they are available in Australia 🦘
Hope you get it soon!
Topo responded to me on IG saying there are no current plans to bring it to Australia, which was sad. Hopefully it pops up at some stage
Great review as always. Never used Topo. Is there a bouncy topo trail shoe? I have wide feet, so topo could be good for me
I’m hoping someone else in the comments can help out. I don’t have experience with their trail shoes (this was my first Topo), but I’m hoping to try one of their trail shoes next
Please explain why you would want bouncy on trails.
@@mistatopo8337 - Hi Tony. That’s quality service. Great reviewer and then feedback from Topo. I will have a look at UK sites
I wouldn’t really consider any of the shoes you mentioned for recovery running
@@kofuzi what would you recommend? I checked on Topo’s website but they don’t carry my size 5.
Any idea if they will come out with more color ways?
I hope so. I'm not a fan of this blue
I think i am falling in love…
Regards from Spain
It’s a good shoe
Have u tried the kinvara 14 kofuzi
I have in a store and loved it. Just ordered it from them.
I've yet to find a "tempo" day shoe with enough stability...Rebel, Speed, Cyclone all lacking. Any thoughts/suggestions?
This isn’t as stable as the endorphin speed.
Hyperion Max?
@@kofuzi Thanks...little too firm for my liking. I've been using NB RC Elite v2 which have just enough. But closing in on 225 miles on these...
@@brandonm4664 saucony tempus. I’ve used those for tempo runs and they feel good. It’s just a moderate arch profile, so if your feet are flat, it’ll take a few miles to break in
@@kofuzi Wait a sec,cyclone 2 is less stable than endorphin speed 1 or 2?
Hi, If I use size USA 9 in NB Rebel`s v2 v3, should I use in this an 9 or 8.5, I read maybe half down? Thx
I went with the same size in each of the shoes
I wear 10 in Rebel v3 and 9.5 in Cyclone 2.
Is it suitable for half marathons? Thanks
if you have good mechanics, yes. I find it too low to the ground and too neutral for me to consider it for a marathon.
They almost sound like the OG Pegasus turbo.
I feel that, but I generally try to avoid making comparisons to that shoe, as it seems the shoe everyone compares back to whenever they really really like a shoe
are those other shoes (saucony) also with wide toebox?
some of them are available in a wide
@@kofuzi you might consider my suggestion that when you recommend other shoes to go with zero drop, wide toe box shoes, those other shoes be also of that design. that way your runner readers won't make the mistake of getting shoes that would be too tight or cause injuries / bunions, etc.
Only Altra and Topo shoes come with an anatomical (foot shape) toebox. Other cushioned running shoes may offer a wide variant but footshape toebox they are not.
Is this a Bandit commercial?
