Distribution feels like one of those problems that everyone talks about, but few people are doing anything about or offering solutions. Not that distribution is the creators' job to "fix" but if we're waiting on Amazon or Walmart to fix it it's gonna be a while.
Definitely need people with strong business sense to have big ideas and really want to reach as many potential readers as possible. It’s not going to be easy and it’s likely to be at a loss for a while, but the long-term payoff potential is very high.
Such a great conversation. So nice to be able to watch a group of people talk passionately about what they love rather than just trying to shit all over other people like you find far too often on "social media". The world needs more of this!

Jeremy Adams is one of Thee best writers at DC, hope he gets to do some Marvel work they need it lol.
The issue with DC and Marvel is that they don’t wanna course correct. They know that the current versions of the characters aren’t selling well and the same fail writers keep failing upwards. Certain writers shouldn’t be writing at DC or Marvel. Jeremy Adams should be on Batman or he should be back on the Flash or a Justice League book.
I gotta agree with Deniz Camp when it comes to the pirate sites. People will end up buying the books if they liked what they read.
Pirating manga was pretty common when I was younger, because the translated books were so far behind. Most people would end up reading it online early and buy the physical copies later.

Love this convo and all these artist. Only issue I take is not enough mention of the success of James Tynion’s books. SIKTC, W0rldtr33, nice house on the lake, Dept of truth are HUGE books. Also, Donny Cates had huge success’s over the last few years (Absolute Carnage sold over 200K copies).

The people who say cancel culture doesn’t happen in comics believe it’s correct to cancel someone in comics. If you don’t think it happens it’s because you know it does.

They keep talking about enticing 'normal' people into comics. What they should be doing is trying to entice the audience that has always been there for comics 10 to 14 year old boys, monthly comics need to be less preachy, more fun and action oriented and they need to be cheaper
I only read pirated and when I spend money on physical comicbooks Its on old backissues, collector's issues, first apperances or ebay lots
I liked the conversation, but wish there were more questions, or more discussion about how to go about "restarting", or "regaining" excitement for comics. There was a lot of discussion about the problems, but not that much talk about solutions, or what worked in the past.
Mark Millar & Adam Kubert started Ultimate X-Men which helped start the Ultimate Universe after the bankrupt Marvel era.
Then, you have Jeremy Adams who has been writing hot DC books during a time where DC is declining.
And then you have Deniz Camp who has the potential to reinvigorate Marvel with his new Ultimate book.
Comics is pretty niche, and it would be better if comics were sold more places and were cheaper so more people would know where to buy them AND afford them. There was a lot of talk towards the end where people remembered how comics were niche in the old days, where they were embarrassed to be a nerd. I think the solution isn't that comics should go back to being niche, but it needs truly passionate creators who write quality stories and/or draw quality images that get readers/fans excited to buy them.
Pirating comics has all the comics in 1 place, and it's free. Similarly, webtoons/webcomics has the comics on 1 site, and it's free. However, passionate fans will want to buy the trades, or own physical copies, or own original art. So there has to be passionate fans/readers, as well as passionate creators who make comics that fans/readers will want to buy.
I got into the Millarworld stuff because the stories and art were stuff I hadn't seen or read before. Most of it was edgy, and shock value, sure, but at least it was different. I think there is manga that is becoming more popular like that too, where shonen readers are transitioning to become seinen readers. Manga like Berserk, Vagabond, Attack on Titan, Vinland Saga, Chainsaw Man replaces interest in One Piece, Naruto, Dragon Ball Z, My Hero Academia like how Watchmen, Dark Knight Returns, Walking Dead, SAGA, Wanted, Nemesis, and Kick-Ass replaced interest in Batman 66 and Marvel.
The Energon Universe has been doing well, but is there something at Marvel doing well? (DC hasn't been doing well, so I defaulted to just Marvel). Is Transformers solely doing well just because of Daniel Warren Johnson? His success, though, probably came from his Marvel and DC work, as opposed to just Do a Powerbomb-- Beta Ray Bill, Wonder Woman: Dead Earth, and Jurassic League? I almost feel like in the case of Transformers, it could just be because people like DWJ's art and writing.
Meanwhile, SAGA is back, but it's not doing as well. Glenn O'Leary said in 1 video how he dislikes BKV takes long breaks since it kills interest.
It seems like Marvel is really hoping their Ultimate titles do well: Ultimate Spider-Man and The Ultimates. Black Panther I've heard is a bit boring, and X-Men seems a bit polarizing due to it's art... which I don't get because Peach Momoko's variants I thought have always sold well, so I have no idea how people are not aware of her art style.
Jeremy Adams seems like a nice fellow, I recall watching a Lego Shazam movie, and when I heard his name popping up more due to his Flash and Green Lantern run, I was like, "Huh? Isn't that the guy who wrote that lego Shazam movie?" lol
That lengthy break killed Saga interest. Book was hot and that long off a layoff will kill just about anything. We can understand there are reasons, but the falloff in hype is understandable as well.

I knew he was corny when he did the beclowned "cancel culture isn't real." schtick.
I recall in the Liefled interview, he talked about competition with his peers and that seemed to help improve his skills as a writer, artist, and desire to make good comics.
I wonder if the fear of the AI art stuff will act as a proxy for this competition. I think manga does, maybe even webcomics a tiny bit... but since all the articles talk about how all of comics are doing well, this might lead people into a false sense of security where they don't need to really "compete" with each other anymore to drive each other to out do each other, if they feel like they're already successful.
I think an issue we have with the top talent not drawing many books is that they make way more money doing commissions and covers than the companies want to pay for regular interiors. Plus, interiors are much more difficult. Work smarter, not harder.

Want to make comics accessible? Figure out how to make them cheap. $5 is not accessible.

That’s not going to happen with new comics. Lower prices are not going to increase the sales enough to pay creators a respectable wage, they generally get paid poorly enough as it is.
Now, the fact new releases are not at a lower price point digitally is a shame. Printing and distribution cost being eliminated should reflect in digital purchase prices. People who buy physical copies are not going to switch to digital en masse, so the price break would not affect comic shops much.
And the facsimile editions are way too expensive. Those dollar reprints they were doing need to come back.

Kaare and Adam understand that by being open on social media about their politics, etc. limits their potential audience reach.
Jeremy understands similar as a writer, taking Mark Twain's approach of "teach and preach covertly, not overtly".
Deniz, and other new writers like him, wear their politics on their sleeve as a way to signal to those on social media to follow them, but how many existing readers is he alienating? He arrived on camera wearing a keffiyeh, an immediate symbol that he is anti-Israel, so has likely alienated Jewish comics fans who might have considered buying Ultimates. After that exercise, I've just cancelled his title from my 'pull list' as he's immediately signaled who he wants reading his title & who he doesn't.
When I was a kid, I bought comics where the writer presented both sides of the argument and respected my intelligence enough to make my decision from there. This is why comics sales are a far cry from eighties sales, because writers don't respect their capacity to think as human beings.

His Our Fighting Forces issues from the early fifties which have a character called Lieutenant NAKAM, clearly named for the Hebrew term for "Avengers," the group of young Holocaust survivors Marvel's led by poet and resistance fighter Abba Kovner, who undertook a mission of revenge against Germany following the crimes of the Holocaust.
What's further funny that the keffiyeh worn by pro-Palestinians and Hamas was adapted by British Officer John Bagot Glubb for the bedouin unit of the Arab Legion he created in 1930, and it was a cheap cultural appropriation knock off of the Jewish Sudra (prayer shawl) originating in the city of Kufa (hence the name).
Monthly floppies need to end. In the age of binge, people want an entire story in one-shot. CRIMINAL/RUTHLESS is a good model. Dogman books are self-contained stories. A reader can pick up anyone in the series and get a whole story. No one wants to wait 4 weeks for the next 20 pages at $5 price point. Also, making graphic novels you can target different age groups. AND you can get into big chain stores that floppies aren’t getting in. Stop the flop!

Corporate greed and the big two not wanting to test the waters with new ideas.
Also I don't think people have realised how quickly behaviours changed during the lockdowns. We've seen it with the movie industry but 6 months without physical comics also changed a lot of behaviours.

Deniz Camp, Kaare wasn’t referring to Harvey Weinstein when it comes to cancelling. That is so disingenuous to the cancellation trend discussion. You know very well how people in your profession can’t find work just because of their political or religious views. People arrested for breaking the law especially like Weinstein is not even close to cancellation in this context.
Cancellation doesn’t exist in one form, it as noted by both Deniz & Mark exists in multiple forms & one of them is terrible but the other isn’t
Let’s take Gerard Jones’ & Ed Piskor’s situations as examples , both were accused of being pedo & it ended up with one being innocent & other not
Ed’s situation is unfair to say the least especially with how it ended but Gerard deserved more than the cancellation he got
You’re approaching this issue as if it’s a one possibility only situation when in reality it is a case by case situation

I read a good chunk of Jeremy Adams flash. It was self contained and i could avoid the rest of ghey dc. Mr terrific was bought in as the diverse handler though. The green lantern run has been affected by the dei characters. I gave up on that

Deniz Camp is acting like ppl didn't get canceled for thinking differently or having a different opinion nd then losing their jobs because of it. How many great comic book writers and artist won't get work at Marvel or DC because they are seen as the political enemy instead of "your work is great lets get you on Spider-man" etc. Ppl acted like the cannibals waiting for the next persons lively they could destroy rather then trying to understand them as another person who many have a different opinion.
