One of the great things about Sheeran is that he takes beautiful old traditional songs, like this and “The Parting Glass”, and makes them cool for young people to listen to. They’d probably never hear them otherwise. And maybe it gives them an appetite for more great older music.
He also has a wonderful voice, of course.

Oh the summer time is coming
And the trees are sweetly blooming
    Where the wild mountain thyme
    Grows around the blooming heather
    Would you go, lassie, go?
    And we'll all go together
    Where the wild mountain thyme
    Grows around the blooming heather
    Would you go, lassie, go?
And I will build my love a bower
    And yon pure crystal fountain
And around it I will place
All the colors of the mountain
    Would you go, lassie, go?
    And we'll all go together

I Like it, Wild Mountain Thyme" (also known as "Purple Heather" and "Will Ye Go, Lassie, Go?") is a folk song written by Francis McPeake, a member of a well known musical family in Belfast, Ireland, and of Scottish origin.[1] McPeake's lyrics are a variant of the song "The Braes of Balquhither" by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill (1774-1810), a contemporary of Robert Burns. Tannahill's original song, first published in Robert Archibald Smith's Scottish Minstrel (1821-24), is about the hills (braes) around Balquhidder nearLochearnhead. Like Burns, Tannahill collected and adapted traditional songs, and "The Braes of Balquhither" may have been based on the traditional song "The Braes o' Bowhether".

I am curious as to what people here consider the 'original' version? It is basically an, at least, 200 year old folk song from Scotland which has slowly been edited and adapted by countless artists. You can have favorite versions, but an 'original' version is not something I think we can know. What are these better versions? I fancy a listen to see if I agree.

    Idly raves 'roun' oor dwellin'
And the roar o' the linn
On the nicht breeze is swellin'
    So merrily we'll sing
As the storm rattles o'er us
    'Til the dear shielin' ring
    Wi' the licht liltin' chorus

    Noo the summers in prime
    Wi' the flooers richly bloomin'
    Wi' the wild mountain thyme
    A' the moorlan's perfumin'
    Tae oor dear native scenes
    Let us journey thegither
    Whar glad innocence reigns

    Let us go, lassie, go
    Tae the braes o' Balquhidder
    Whar the blueberries grow

Actually, much of the Lyrics also came from the Scottish Song 'Braes O Balqudhidder' But have been altered to turn it into a love song.
Examples side by side (Keeps in mind I am translating the Scots into English):
Braes O Balqudhidder: let's go, lassie go
Wild mountain thyme: will ye go lassie go
Braes O Balqudhidder: the summer is in its prime
Wild mountain thyme: the summer is coming
Braes O Balqudhidder: the blueberrie Trees are richly blooming
Wild mountain thyme: the trees are sweetly blooming
Braes O Balqudhidder: and we will journey together
Wild mountain thyme: we will all go together
Braes o Balqudhidder: there sits wild mountain thyme
Wild mountain thyme: picking wild mountain thyme
Braes of Balqudhidder: wild mountain thyme in the purple heather
Wild mountain thyme: wild mountain thyme grows in the heather.
Braes O Balqudhidder: Glimmering crystal silver foundation.
Wild mountain thyme: on pure crystal fountain.
      The list goes on ....
The issue is you Irish don't speak Scots so they don't realise how much this song is similar to the original Braes O Balqudhidder.
This Basically a English version of Braes O Balqudhidder where the words have been shift around so the object of love is not nature (like in the original) but the girl.

I definitely prefer the traditional Scottish song to which this song was inspired by when it was written in the 1950s. I would love to hear Ed Sheeran sing the original version.
The issue with the modern song is its about falling in love with a girl. The original is about falling in love with nature.
You can listen the traditional version here:
    m.ua-cam.com/video/k6mKGvr15Wg/v-deo.html (A more modern version).
ua-cam.com/video/iov2P5nmIuI/v-deo.html (A older version sung in the 1911 before 'Wild mountain thyme' was even written).
It is 400 years old, the traditional version and is called, Braes O Balqudhidder. Braes means mountain side, Bal means 'where you come from'.
This version, Wild Mountain Thyme, is 70 years old so it is interesting to compare the difference of the times And I would Love to heard Ed sing the combination song of Braes O' Balqudhidder and Wild Mountain Thyme, it is so beautiful when you put both songs together like some versions have done in the past.
    Example of that Here:

If you actually heard the hills of aberfeldy, a song on subtract, it actually kinda sounds like this song and sounds exactly like it in some bits of this with the rhythm. I don’t know if this song inspired the hills of aberfeldy but I think they sound really alike, especially when Ed sings it. Am I the only one who thought this?

Luke Sullivan Jensen actually does have Irish blood. He's Scottish, Irish and English. that being said i think this song is actually derived from a really old Scottish folk song.

    • @chicmac1
      @chicmac1 9 років тому +2

      Luke Sullivan A common misconception.
There is a 20th C Irish rewrite but the original lyrics were by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill, a contemporary of Burns, which may have themselves been based on an even earlier Scottish song and the tune used is an old Scottish air called 'The Three Carls O' Buchanan'.

The lyrics and melody are a variant of the song "The Braes of Balquhither" by Scottish poet Robert Tannahill (1774-1810) and Scottish composer Robert Archibald Smith (1780-1829), but were adapted by Belfast musician Francis McPeake (1885-1971) into "Wild Mountain Thyme" and first recorded by his family in the 1950s.
