Got myself a bargain as I paid £299 for my Terra Nova Pioneer 2. Absolutely love it. Bought the footprint as well. Getting it out next week for a three day hike in predicted windy weather.
I’d love to own a Terra Nova tent, they do look very good and like the idea of buying from a UK based company. Unfortunately out of my price range. Good review. Thanks.
Ive had one a while now i would highly recommend for upland use, bit heavy for valley camping really. Free tip its easier to pitch if you slide both poles in first then tension them, rookie mistake😘 btw i only paid £330 for it during a promo. I bought the footprint too which is pricey for what it is though UK made so understandable. What i love when using the footprint is how it makes (in my perception anyway) the vestibule feel very usable for storage and cooking. I took it out on dartmoor in one of the named storms and while i did double peg it in a couple places with big msr cyclone stakes it withstood heavy winds without damage. I was worried about the top ventilation leaking too with wind driven rain but it was fine.
Great review Abbie I’ve got this tent around 2019 and I was Jammy they were selling at half price £250! They do sell off early designs at great prices always worth giving them a call to ask
I think the comments about the expensive price are slightly unfair. If you want to go wild camping, it might be quite windy you need something high quality, budget tents are for the summer but for all year round winter camping you’ll need a tent like this. It’s a fair review.
Thanks for the great review! I’d absolutely love to do a summit camp here in Scotland with my partner (and mad spaniel…), so looking for a decent tent to carry between us 😊
Thanks for the review - be nice to hear your thoughts on the comparison to the SC1 or 2. Given your view on Terra Nova as a company - would be great to see a factory visit or similar to see the people, hear their views on tents and how they source materials etc.
Excellent review I own this and quite often it is much cheaper on offer than £500 . it is on offer at the moment if you purchase the ground sheet with it and makes it much much cheaper. An amazing tent that pitches fly first people don’t realise the importance of fly first in the UK. only downside to this tent is it is slightly heavy compared to others but bombproof quality easy to pitch especially in bad weather and freestanding makes it so it is easy to find the perfect placement.
This or the Laser Compact 2 or the Helm 2? I guess it depends on whether my son will camp in the same tent as me or want to be separate. The Helm is the largest. This is nice. The Laser is the most expensive (but someone has it at £400 at the moment - I just wonder if they're genuine) I've been using my old fashioned Vango Force 10, so after that anything will be featherweight, but the 10 is bombproof and comfortable even in things like Scout Winter Camp.
Hi Abbie I love the look of that tent. I have a helm1 compact which I love that looks like a bigger version of it the other problem I have is I love tents and would love to buy all of them 🤣🤣🤣 Atb Graham
Had mine out the other night for the first time and it was wet and windy! I was convinced this would happen but it didn’t. There is hardly any gap between them but the inner stayed dry!
Hi Abbie, great review, as always! Just wanted to say that I have a Terra nova tent that I bought about 6 years ago. I opened it up at the weekend only to find the fly was so sticky that I had to almost rip it apart to separate it out. Terra Nova have said that degradation is to be expected and there is nothing they can do; they can’t even replace the fly for me, as it is a discontinued model. Like you I expected the tent I saved up for to last a lot longer. I so don’t want to give up on this tent (as Terra nova have advised) as I love it. Would you happen to know if there is any way of reproofing the fly? Any advice much appreciated 🙏
Thanks Abbie, I did contact them but the only thing they could offer was a discount on a new tent. I have now embarked on reproofing it myself, which is proving to be a very onerous task indeed. Many thanks for your response.
I think also this tent is the same as the wild country Helm 2 by Terra Nova with a polyester fly and is cheaper I myself don't see the point of the second zip exit if it is not easy to vacate like the other entrance also no second vestibule on that side it is a shame you don't get a separate footprint with the tent free instead of extra cost I myself use a light tarp cover from poundsavers is very light and waterproof and has eyelets to peg as a footprint I have no doubt thou that the components are of high quality and will last I wonder what the condensation is like in winter with the fly being low to the ground the ease and manovreability of the tent looks good and headheight carefull pitching also I enjoyed the review and found useful there was good honest opinions and examples showing Matt's and space great for me
Thanks for the video Abbie. Unfortunately Terra Nova tents have consistently let me down. Sometimes my car was nearby so I could retreat to that for shelter, other times without that option I just had to ditch the tent and shelter in public toilets. I have nothing but bad memories of using Terra Nova tents. Terra Nova seem more focused on trying to continually hold the Guinness Book of Records for the lightest tent in the world rather than producing products that are genuinely fit for purpose in the field.. Never again TN.
I have the Solar Minor from over twenty years ago. Still works just great. I got the footprint and that is the part that shows u the wear and tear so I would recommend using a footprint either the official one or make your own out of some cheap tarp material. Also, its very unlikely that a colour-blind person would mix up blue and red!
@@paulmckearney4945 Great! I've got a Solar Minor too, but as usual with my experience of TN tents the pole failed even though it was pitched well in an appropriate location. On all of my TN tents the poles snapped or the inner/flysheet got shredded so not fit for purpose; and those stupid 2gm pegs they supply. Do me a friggin favour TN! Rubbish! I've had several (the clue is in the word "several") Laser Competitions and every single one failed, and they could not cope with normal 3-season conditions. Splash out on a Hilleberg or an MLD - Buy wise, buy once.
Thanks Paul! The joys of backpacking eh?! 🙂. Terra Nova make outstanding heavier duty tents, but unfortunately 4 Laser Competitions, a Solar Minor and a Photon all failed on me. On one occasion of these failures it could have been fatal - hypothermia as I and all my clothes and sleeping bag ended up utterly drenched at 2am. The only way to avoid hypothermia was to pack up and walk vigorously around the village until the first bus arrived at around 8am. It was terrible weather and I was absolutely freezing. I had to go to a pub and as discreetly as I could hang up my clothes all around to dry. I've subsequently endured far worse weather (extremely strong winds at -9c) in my Hilleberg Enan at 1.2kg and felt completely safe and secure. I'm glad your TN Solar Minor is performing well. I do have fond memories of my first backpacking trips in one of them.
Poor, unreliable pegging (those stupid pegs TN supply!) and poor poles that have consistently failed on me making the tent unusable. Just go for a Hilleberg. Buy wise buy once as the saying goes.
7:30 Abby, I think a few weeks of service with the armed forces will teach you what green this is - Army/Navy Green, don't you think? 😜 And maybe we will see you putting up some camouflage on the tent as well. 🤣
I have the compact laser and the weatherproofing is awful on that pole seam, Terra Nova has now lost my custom, to be honest, I have now just gone to Hilleberg and stuff the expense as I know my Akto, an extra 500gs I know, but I will be dry and safe and will last me, OK I'm 63 so it should, lol... Great channel Abbey, always love your bad jokes, lol... :) :) :)
You know, Abbie, if you go out to Roswell, New Mexico, they rent out the UFO that crashed in 1947 as a temporary shelter to hikers and campers. Apparently there's an ice cream machine on the inside. 😛
I've found the customer service terrible with terra nova when a voyager I had the poles rubbing together, they wasn't interested . So hilleberg for me as there service is bar none
3 season , to much mesh on the inner to trust up a scottish mountain in winter , any warm air will be vacumed right out of it , ABSOLUTELY NOT 4 SEASON , Theres NO mesh on a 4 season tent if there is it has zippered material pannels over the mesh ! Its ok for southern winters odd night camping , a january week up a mountain in sutherland isnt reccomended with any mesh on the inner ,
Funny that Iv had my TN pioneer 2 in terrible weather in the alps Patagonia Italian Dolomites lot worse conditions than Scottish winters it’s never let me down

Nice review. I got this tent recently and love the headroom.
Hey Abbie just read that you will be talking at the Keswick Mountain Festival - congrats on the gig!!!

Great you just did this video. I was only just thinking about this tent, perfect timing.
Is there a light hook in the ceiling??

Hello, I was wondering if on the none vestibule side of the tent does the inner stick to the outer when wet or in windy conditions ?

Hello, I suggest you contact TN themselves. They have proven to be very helpful for me and I hope they can advise you! Take care and happy camping 🏕

Almost went for this tent in the sale but in the end opted for SC2 based on the price and use. Again, great review Abbie - thank you.
Southern Cross 2 is the one for me - but seems to be sadly sold out now - can't find it at all.
@@kierandorman9634 Helm Compact 2, another great tent?
This tent now on offer on TN site for £349 including footprint.
Poles have been upgraded as have pegs which are now Terra Firma rather than wire ones
Is there a lamp hanging loop in there? I’ve heard people say it’s missing
