The DARK Truth About In Living Color | Censorship, Why The Entire Wayans Family Left
Вставка
- Опубліковано 15 жов 2023
- American sketch comedy television series In Living Color was the definition of an overnight success. Premiering on Fox on April 15, 1990, the show immediately became a pop culture phenomenon when more than 22 million people watched that first episode. The fact that a predominantly Black and entirely irreverent variety show would propel the network to new heights was ironic given that most Black comedies of the time were respectable, family-friendly efforts. In Living Color tapped into the burgeoning hip-hop culture and delivered laughs with edgy sketches that made Saturday Night Live look outdated in comparison. The star status of the show would only last for so long though. By season three, a negative snowball effect took over starting with creator and star Keenen Ivory Wayans getting tired of the network's meddling and censorship efforts. By the end of season four, the Wayans family was no longer involved, the quality suffered, and the show ended after five seasons on May 19, 1994.

Two words describe my feelings once the Wayans family left:
HATED IT!!!
For real! It was CRINGE! 😬
😂😂😂😂 totally agree
It wasn't as good in general, but the "All Up In The Family" sketches were great. The best "All In The Family" send-up ever.
I'd say " two snaps in z formation"
I agree 💯
Unpopular opinion I think living color and Mad TV were funnier than SNL 🤷♀️
Same 💯💯💯
Still are. Except for the Eddie years
I agree! I mean SNL??? Homie don't play dat!
Come on you left out the Dave Chappelle Show
Unpopular to who? Lol. That is a 100% true comment
If "In Living Colour' was rebooted it be an insult to the legacy of the original series and it would be impossible to have the same level of comedy without getting canceled.
I'm just glad I was able to watch it when it first aired back in the day.
It would damage the legacy
They did a pilot for a reboot a couple of years ago but it was never released. Keenan felt the pilot wasn’t up to par with the original.
@@Nick_Nightingale Keenan made the right call!
Agreed
i miss the 1990s entertainment has been destroyed
Calhoun Tubbs was my favorite character on the show. His catchphrase: "Wrote a song about it, like to hear it? Here it go!" was used in the intro for En Vogue's hit "Free your Mind."
Calhoun Tubbs came a guy that used to be at the Eastern Market in Detroit. He would always play a quick song and say, "Wrote a song about it". Facts
Fun fact: the catchphrase Mo Money uttered by Damon Wayans ended up becoming a film starring him, Marlon Wayans, and Stacey Dash. Mo Money the movie also takes bits and pieces of the skit Homeboy shopping network that Damon and Keenan did.
If you're black and over 35 and didn't know this hand in your black card
Keenan did a great Rick James , Billie Dee Williams, and he did sound like Eddie's cousin as Frenchie
Also Sexual chocolate was also based on Rick James
@@brooklynbred1460FAXX!! 😂
Even Damon brought that Anton The Homeless Man to the movie Mo' Money
They also did a movie based on Handiman. Called Blankman because the disability community were offended by the name Handiman.
The first three seasons were HILARIOUS especially when Damon Wayans OWNED it in most of the sketches. 😂😂😂😂😂
Sidenote: It sucks the greatest sketch comedy shows I've seen-In Living Color and The Chappelle's Show-had such a SHORT run. I wonder why. 😫🙄
I need to go back and watch it. I was so little when it came out
Same reason why every other great black sitcom had short runs.... They never fail to ruin things! 😒
(season 1, episode 5) May 12, 1990
"Three Champs & a Baby"; "A Date With Grace"; "Homeboy Shopping Network." that is a one of my favorites.
Because strong black men don't want to be puppets or sellout
The entertainment business is tough, even when you are 'in'.
Two more years until the 35th anniversary of In Living Color
In Living Color. Very cutting edge and ahead of its time. Keenan Ivory Wayans should always get his flowers for providing this classic, as well as putting his family and so many other talented people on.
Streaming sites…what’s the hold up?!?!
The streams don’t want to offend anyone outside of the black community.
I hate that it’s not available unedited; and I hate how Nickelodeon did the same to All That; All those iconic music performances from both sketch shows just cut
The shorter sketches is what made IN LIVING COLOR. SNL would go on for 10 min and not one joke said. The only sketch comedy that could do that was Carol Burnett Show
Want up reg
SNL can do a whole season without telling a joke. Matter of fact, they haven't told a joke since the late 90s.
Carol Burnette show doesn't always get credit it deserves for TV comedy. Glad you mentioned it. 💯
@kevinwaddle447 They were awesome for a looong time (SNL). Everyone waited till it came on every Saturday nite. Sadly, last decade or so it lost its flare. -NY
I liked "Hey Mon with the Hedleys." I learned about Weat Indian immigrant hustling. "You so lazy, you only have four jobs! When i was your age i had six!"
Vera De Milo was also funny too.
...was that the sketch where Kim Coles (as one of the Family's Sisters) said, "..I tink I love HE!..." ...I STILL use that line! ..ha-HAAA!!

Just the intro song to In Living Color makes me want to put on my cross colours, tims, and dance my heart out. Then, go change into dress slacks, a multicolor button up shirt, and dress shoes, and go dance my heart out again. Lol!
True fact: Carrie Ann Inaba of "Dancing With The Stars" fame was also one of the original Fly Girls. You'll see her at 4:48.
Damon and Kim's sketch about Reds Foxx was so funny...and Kim's impression of Lawanda Page was also hilarious.
Another fun fact: AJ Johnson best known for her role in House Party opposite Tisha Campbell was asked by Keenan himself to choreographed the Fly girls for ILC. But since she was told she couldn’t do both, she decided to focus on doing the House Party movie.
My favorite Tisha Campbell appearance (that's not in Martin) is Little Shop of Horrors.
I always knew that about Shawn Wayans faking the funk as a DJ
😂😂😂 I had no idea.
He’s a real DJ now. Crazy ain’t it? 😂
So many stars were born from that show. It will always be iconic
First in living color, then scary movie. Leave the Wayans family alone and give them their 💐 and 💵💰🪙✅️!
Seriously How does hollyweird have the nerve to take real talented artist hard work and act like they are the owners of it just because they gave them a time slot on tv. If it was done in today’s time they wouldn’t have needed a spot on TV straight to the internet 🛜
1st was I gonna get you sucka
Those dumb kids didn't even know they were being insulted by Homey. I never cared for Jim Carrey or Lopez, but that show was funny!😆
So thankful for UA-cam and the people who uploaded all the clips including the video parodies ❤
Agreed, the people who recorded the episodes on VHS are the true heroes
The In Living Color Super Bowl Halftime show special was awesome!!
"My favorite teams are the Oilers and the Packers!"
I still maintain that the main reason why Spike did Bamboozled was to get back at In Living Color for making fun of him on that Spike's Joint sketch.
Great flick
Hey you think on your next video you could talk about what happened to the Apollo
In Living Color:Fox Sunday Night 90s Classic…….This was the show to watch before school the next day……when the Wayans left after 92-93 season, it stopped being fun……RIP Marc Wilmore And Jay Leggett…..
Casey Lee AKA DJ Twist later went to appear in shows and movies such as The Wayans Bros, In the House, My Wife & Kids, Carmen: A Hip-Hopera, just to name a few
The fallout of In Living Color all started with the tension between Keenen Ivory Wayans and Fox.
But blame Fox
I think it was family favoritism
Too bad it's not streaming anywhere. I would love to go back and rewatch it and see what was so edgy
you can find episodes on youtube
It would just be heavily edited and censored anyways.
crystal waters was one of the artists upset with their parodies. she tried to sue them for their take on ‘gypsy woman’.
that was a great skit, yabba dabba do yabba dabba dee!!
I found episodes from season 1 on UA-cam.
The part of the parody video with the breakdancing homeless dude cracks me up till this day. Everything on the set was white except a dirt spot where the dude was dancing.
Not just her but arsino hall was pissed when Kennan made fun of him even though they both were cool with Eddie Murphy
@@darrylhenry3188 wow.. didn’t know that.
Hearing this in the background pretty much surmises my childhood. I remember saying homie don’t play that in school bc I heard it the night before. The fact that this is not streaming anywhere is absolutely insane. There’s no reason for it other than the fact that the powers that be are really trying to stick it to Kenan-stull
Rosie Perez should have gotten Jhos career. She actually has talent and is humble. I lived down the street from her in Brooklyn and she was a sweetheart
Jhos 😂
I can believe it! Rosie is an Oscar nominated actress and she's STILL great at what she does! Still aging well too! ❤
Even Tommy Davidson called her out for being cold when they saw each other in more recent years. Jennifer has been called out for being arrogant numerous times. 🙄
@@danavixen6274Ole Jennifer has always represented us Jennifers not too well 😂
@@danavixen6274
Rosie is a better actress, better singer (she sang in Spanish had me smitten ❤) better looking and was actually Puerto Rican
They was right for not rebooting it 💯
Let's just enjoy what we had , because I watch it frequently with my son
I remember watching In Living Color with my parents back when I was a little girl! It definitely informed my sense of humor, thinking on the point brought up that it was so fast-paced. It also sort of rang the death knell for my edgy goth phase. I remember being fourteen and more excited about watching the DVDs of the first season than in reading the vampire book a friend had loaned me.
The original airing of the Michael Jackson sketch did NOT have cheering at the end. After "I guess I AM black" , the audience said "OH!!!!! Oooooooooooo". Cheering and clapping has been edited in.
Girl, you're on a roll and I'm loving it!!!❤
Yes and yessss! I’m excited you are doing a video on this!! Funny how Rosie Perez and JLO bumped heads while they did ILC, two Latinas from the Bronx chile…
I remember her saying they wanted her to lose weight, because they (she didn’t say who) felt she was “thicker” than the other dancers. But she stayed true to herself and never bowed down to the “skinny girl troupe”.
I loved the “Jeri’s” Kids skit. Complete with dripping activator. I was 12 when that skit aired. I cried with laughter.
This show was amazing. My family watched so much of it we still use some of the phrases to this day.
Men on film was hilarious 😂😂😂
"Pretty Woman. Hated it." 🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Two snaps up!
@@danavixen6274 🤣🤣🤣
I loved when Jodeci was on there too (performing X’s We Share). I always wondered why Kim Coles was only on one season. I’m glad you included the info about the Super Bowl. They owe In Living Color that.
Coles had other commitments
I love this show Growing Up homie the Clown and Fire Marshall Bill are classics
The music video sketches were always hilarious😂
GREAT VIDEO! Please do one on MadTV!
I Grew Up On In Living Color. My Favorite Seasons Was 1 and 2. Season 3 Was Ok Though Those With Eyes That Can See, Season 3 Was The Beginning of The End For In Living Color. For Me At Least. The Wayans Family Did It HardBody!
Forgot to mention one
The sketch Kim did making fun of that woman song the singer was uppppppset
Crystal Waters's Gypsy Woman (She's Homeless). I know for a fact she was upset.
@@danavixen6274 she was she felt they was saying she couldn’t make a good song no lie it was hilarious
@@kingbrahma5005 I love Crystal Waters and this song. But, the parody is funny! 🤣
@@kingbrahma5005she couldn't
Keep them coming 😀👏🏾👏🏾👏🏾. Thanks.
This was must see TV for me back in the day. The first couple of seasons were brilliant.
Soooo nostalgic! The theme song gave me goosebumps because I haven't heard it in so long! Takes me back to the times where cellphones were barely making waves. Therefore, families could enjoy quality TV and movie time together without cellphones being a disruption in most households. We all sat ours asses down together as a family and watched these legendary shows laughing our stomachs and faces to pain.... No comparison these days, even with all of the graphics and technology we have available today. Forever classic 💜💜💜
This was a good one. Are you still doing music? Can you do one on R&b group Prophet jones
The musical performances and the fly girl segments were and will always be the best parts of the show!!
Yessss!!!!
Huh the best, so not the jokes 😂😂😂 really.... ok if you say so
Homey D Clown is pure genius. They did a sketch on a hard-working Carribbean black family that you couldn't do today. People would think it offensive but real folks from Trinidad thought it was great!
You only got 5 jobs? You're so lazy!
With the level of single parent families there...they should call it...Trini~mom.
That last season was so weird. It relied too heavily on Dirty Dozen "yo mama" jokes and Chris Rock doing that cheap "good lord that's a lot money" character.
This show brought different people together in harmony. People got along so much better during these times. They couldn't allow that to continue.🤐🍻
So did ya sleep through the Rodney King beating and the riots and Matthew Shepards murder or...?
My favorite sketch: Men on Film😂😂😂😂😂😂😂😂. "it's raining men, hallelujah, it's raining men... Never missed an episode in the earlier seasons.
JLo wasn't the best dancer, but I'm not one one for gossip, so you aint heard that from me.
😂😂😂
Still dropping hot content, i see
I remember that Bolt 45 sketch, used to wonder why I never saw it again, I thought it was pretty funny.
John Leguizamo went onto do his own version called House of Buggin'.
I miss the 90s thanks juicy pop
Do the Arsenio hall show
She called JLo a singer 😂😂😂that’s a good one 😂
Tell that to Chante' Moore and Mariah Carey. 😏
You gotta do the Wayans bros whats happening good times different strokes
I loved their music parodies for Whitney Houston, Vanilla Ice and MC Hammer. They were so good! Karrie Ann became a judge on Dancing With The Stars. The show picked up where I Gonna Get You Sucka left off. I always laughed now that the character of Calhoun Tubbs was the inspiration for Taylor Swift’s relationship songs.😂 It was the funniest thing on TV at the time. I have all the DVD’s!
Another great content keep more coming
In Living Color was a one of a kind TV show that will never ever be duplicated. So glad I'm old enough to remember the show in its original run. In Living Color is one of the main reasons why I'm glad that I grew up in the 90s.
Great story on In Living Color
Great video as always JP
I hope one day you make a video on the Wayans Bros tv show
I hope you do a story on MadTV
Great job on the videos my sister. I love these deep dives 😊
No matter how long it has been since it originally aired, it's still funny. Handi-man was my favorite.😊
Juicy Pop you done it again. I just love your channel. I was waiting for this one. In Living Color was so funny and raw they even made fun of the songs that were out during that time. Keenan Ivory Wayans pissed off a lot of people. That's why Him and Arsenio Hall were really beefing hard. Damon, Kim, Shawn and Marlon and everybody had me dying 😅. But when Keenan Ivory Wayans left in mid 1993 that's when the show died. And during that time Martin skyrocketed on Fox and so did Living Single. So in May of 1994, In Living Color got cancelled along with Roc and The Arsenio Hall Show. Funny a year after ILC went off the air, MAD TV comes on. Oh yeah can you please do a episode on those Fox TV shows Juicy Pop?
I don't like that Keenan fired Kim Coles. I mean damn, he had her legs wide open on the Bolt 45 sketch, you would think that would afford her at least another season on the show!
I just wanna say I live for ur videos! Honestly, wait to eat my meals to them lol always really interesting, and cool facts I never knew
Could you do something about Full House or Step by Step or Kenan and Kel?
They did a story on Full House already
I was a young teenager and this was a weekly staple for our family to watch. We loved the show and most of all the music parodies. To think the episodes exist without those jokes is so sad, they will live on forever in my memories.
This video ended with me shedding some tears of nostalgic joy. Thanks!
Well said.
This was a show my parents and I all watched. I was surprised to learn they wanted to watch the show. Their friends even watched it as well. I really loved the show, it was always funny, cleaver, sometimes silly but had so many great comedians/actors.
Cleaver?! Sounds dangerous.
Show ~ enough...
Absolutely one of the best tv shows.
It made u laugh and think at the same.
One of my favorite episodes were vanilla ice and milli vanilli.
I dead ass wanted to be a fly girl.
I love In Living Color. My dad and I use to watch it in the couch the old reruns. It was too funny!
Great video. In living Color was ahead it's time, I still laugh at the uploaded sketches that are on UA-cam. Tom & Tom the brothers brothers, is funny, so is Keenen's Mike Tyson and Arsenio Hall impressions were so on point, I can see why they were mad.
Yup
This is going to be a great one 🎉❤
O this is great, thank you! They need to do a documentary-style thing on this show. Bet there's still soooo much behind-the-scenes drama we don't know. Ditto MADtv.
First time here!! That intro is the illest!!
Good video. Well researched. Nicely done. 👍
Interesting, I watched a documentary on In Living Color. It was stated that Rosie and JLo did NOT get along, and JLo had an arrogant and entitled attitude towards her and the girls. The doc stated that she and Rosie almost came to blows, with Rosie threatening to kill her outside. Jennifer has NEVER been talented and sold out to get to where she is.
There's an audition video on YT showing JLo BOMB 💣 at dancing and singing. Wonder who she slept with to get on! 😒
Did JLO has a attitude ?
You are right.! I met JLo when she was a fly girl and her attitude was absolutely terrible. She was stuck up conceited and very arrogant. She was obviously a plant. Rosie was a far better performer and human being than Jlo. I think they didn't further push Rosie at the time because Rosie looked more Black than Puerto Rican. Then where as Jlo could be transformed, manipulated and controlled more easily. Rosie had spirit and spunk and had deep morals. They needed a pawn. Jlo was that. JLO can dance but she had to keep practicing. Rosie gave her that ethics. Jlo can't act and she can NOT sing. Who she slept with? Tommy Mottola and Puffy and others to get where she is at today. The horrific thing is she is worse than she was back then as a person and she wasn't even JLO yet. Every time i hear someone share their encounter with her it solidifies to me that when I was younger as a high schooler meeting her for the first time "she was an absolute detestable person." I judge her by her actions because that's what she put out. 🍷🍷🍷🍷
There was a story about a crew member who knew Jennifer Lopez when she was on the show. Jennifer was a sweet, friendly girl. Years later, the same crew member ran into J-Lo. The crew member greeted her. J-Lo replied that she no longer recognized that part of her life.
@@juicyfruit6311 Sounds like something she'd say 🫢. Lol, she may have come in the door "sweet and friendly." Something always turned me off about her; I've never been a fan. If she was picked over better dancers, I'm sure her arrogance eventually shot through the roof, and 'Jenny from the block' was no more.
IN LIVING COLOR was one of the funniest shows on tv. SNL was no longer funny to me when Eddie Murphy left.
I don’t like the politics in anything but Keenan was trying to get executives at FOX to understand something that they’re not a part of. Now I’m not going to go in on the network because I don’t have that much space to write but majority of us know what’s up. FOX wouldn’t’ve been my choice to air my show.
As far as Keenan’s opinion of JLo…surely he jested. I could tell she was humble and ready to give a good show. This show probably was her catalyst to be a performer…breaking a possible shell. I wonder 💭 if she knew Keenan felt the way he did about her?
With everything that happened maybe it was time to go their separate ways.
Also, the original theme was supposed to have been the Living Colour song, What Your Favorite Colour, but the theme was done by Heavy D and the rest is history.
The great Heavy D also sang the MAD TV theme. ❤
In Living Color was such a great show! It was a must see show for me!
I love this channel❤ its reaallly nostalgic even know i was only like, 5 when a lot of 90s stuff was poppin.
The last season was still funnier than snl And madtv
I grew up watching this Amazing show. Watch it anytime it was on and i go back to watch till this day!
Wow, glad I got my DVD a long time ago- I don't recall all of those cuts to the DVDs.
I looked forward to watching this show every week.
12:34 Cladia (my classmate) did have a short stint on In Living Color before JLO.
I was too young to understand now it's funnier now that I'm grown so blessed I lived it...
Awesome video
One of the best shows ever to grace the screen. It put SNL to shame. I miss seeing this raw talent on display, and the small details characters would add was second to none. I own the seasons on dvd, so they can be watched at any time, and during any political climate. Keenan, Jim, Tommy and all the rest, thanks for the memories. Your skits were top notch and laugh out loud funny.
I absolutely LOVEDDD the theme song😮😢❤
St8 up hands down, this was the funniest comedy show I have ever watched in my life! Every Sunday my neighbors could hear me hollering laughing my ass off! I couldn't eat my supper until a commercial came on! I been watching this show from day 1 until the last show aired. Sunday's without "In Living Color" were not the same again :(
STRAIGHT, not St8, loser.
Well put. 👍🌩✂️
I still randomly think about the Mo Betta Butter Dispenser w/ Spike's mouth spewing butter. It makes me LOL every time. Such a brilliant show!
Great video
I for one am glad that Keenan Ivory Wayans got talked into doing a TV show. The first three seasons of In Living Color were hilarious and some of the best sketch comedy ever put on film/video. I also doubt that I would have found I'm Gonna Git You Sucka if not for my familiarity with In Living Color, and that would just be sad.
Make a Death Wish absolutely aired. I remember seeing "dead Jim Carrey" on a roller coaster and thinking, "That's where the Fire Marshall Bill face came from"
