    That is so true about thinking you look raggedy growing your sides out but it doesn't look that way to other people. I'm going to have to keep that in mind whenever I'm ready to try to grow my sides out again.

    This video keeps it real!! There are so many girls on here who have no life except for playing in their hair. They only show the good days. Some only Instagram their wet let length, Etc. Reality is there are more women with tight kinky hair that sticks up sometimes, doesn't look anything like the tutorial, shrinks and sucks up moisture like a cactus. Can we just be happy with what we've got?? #blackisbeautiful #loveyourself #madeinHisimage

    This is just the inspiration I need to continue to grow out my sides and back under cut.
    I’ve cut it at least 10 times after I said I was going to grow them out... the awkward stage gets me😬... but I’m “sticking it out and embracing the process” this time FO SHO!!👍🏾

    Thinking about the after is important before cutting your hair. I cut my hair in a tapered cut because I knew I was going to grow it back out and The taper would give me that shape i wanted.

    • @askpRoy
      @askpRoy  8 років тому +9

      +Jasmine Denson See that's what you call forward thinking! I totally agree - the tapered will keep your hair shape in tact while you're growing it out and it will look good for months without a touch up!

    I'm in the process of growing back both sides and it's annoying to say the least. I had the thought of cutting it all off but I know I would miss my go to ponytail, lol. Then I had the idea of growing one side at a time and just covering the side that was growing. Now I'm on "eff it" mode. Thank goodness for headbands and beanies, lol.

    I'm currently growing my under cut out. I've done Pin Curls , Twist Outs , Curl Formers Roller and for my undercut I use Pomade or Oil & Conditioner I have curly hair so I might straighten the top and attempt to smooth the side. Your right don't fight the growing out stage use Accessories and different ways of styling. Patience is Key... Awesome video just subscribed.😁👏💻📹

    Oddly enough, I didnt mind the awkward phase and like you said it goes by so quickly I dont even remember it. I do think I took leaving it to itself a little too far.. I haven't been creative or even cared and sharing your stories/memories has made me remember how much I love my hair and style and Imma give it some love tomorrow and start having fun again!

    That's really true about time flying. I big chopped to a tapered twa to get rid of damage caused by a bad flat-iron job, and my sides and back were ungrippable. 5 months later, I've got like 2 inches of hair on my sides and back and I can now do a twist out. I didn't even really realize it until my sister pointed out that the sides of my head were looking rough, lol.

  • @v.kelsey5960
    @v.kelsey5960 5 років тому +5

    Wow, so validating to hear a similar process from someone else. A lot of my fellow black friends would never sacrifice length for style. And I agree that you have to mostly leave your hair alone for it to grow. But just as i always wanted to age gracefully, i also wanted to grow out my hair gracefully, haha. So, like you, I'm all about the shape. 🙂 i think few and strategically-done trims can help make it easier to adapt to your hair situation by helping make it into a fitting style.
    When I did the big chop last year, my hairdresser accidentally gave me shaved sides instead of a tapered fro. It took some months before I left it alone and let it grow out. It was difficult at first to not project my insecure thoughts onto others- thinking my awkward stage style looked unintentional. But like you said, you adapt to what your hair looks like at each moment and just style accordingly.
    And after a few months, i had finally grown out that awkward break bewteen the sides and the top of my hair so that I could taper my fro. Which means, after several months of being natural, i was starting with the style i had originally planned for. It sucked that I had to wait (after originally doing a big chop no less). But like you said- time goes by so fast; and when i decided to just rock my new style instead of worrying about it, i got a lot of compliments.
    Now that its been a few months since i tapered my fro, im in the midst of another Awkward stage. But i just moved to China for year, and i don't plan to let a local experiment in cutting their first black person's hair. So I'm just going to enjoy myself and think about the big fro I'll have when I return. 🙂
    If you read all that, bless you, lol. And please keep making vids. 💕

    I get so many compliments on my hair. I just love it. Its amazing to me how many black girls/ladies ask me how do I get my hair the way it is. Lol Sometimes I hear people say She has a texturizer in her hair or a jerri curl. Its crazy. I tell them. You have to take a chance with your natural hair if your permed. Cut all the perm off and you will see what your real hair that god gave your looks like and the real texture of it. It might shock the hell out of you. and change your life as far as perms go.

    I;m like you. I let my shaved sides grow back without bothering it too much. I did do a sponge curl on the side for a while but now i can 2 strand twist my side. Its amazing how natural hair can grow so fast. Also the different textures of hair on our heads. My sides and the back of my head its so soft it will curl up with just water and oil. But the crown of my head is a tighter coil and needs more work. Crazy I just love my natural hair. i will never perm my hair again. natural for 10 yrs

    I've grown mine out. I wore wigs for 3 months which got them going well. Now they are almost as long as the rest of it. SMH the back and sides are a looser texture and always grows faster and break less.

    love the advice! I'm growing out my sides now and its interesting because I was natural my whole life and the sides being shaved was the shortest it was since I was a baby. So this is definitely a new experience for me but it seems to have grown well. I am tempted to cut it again because I miss the feeling but U want a full head of hair again. I'm thinking about getting a undercut and I wanted to know was the process of growing it back made you not want to get one again or you would be willing to repeat the whole process ?

    • @askpRoy
      @askpRoy  8 років тому

      I would cut my hair off again in a heartbeat. LOL
      It isn't the easiest growing out process, but it's not too hard either. All about perspective.

      I personally regret it. I'm in the process of growing out and I'm 3 months in with 1 and a half inch of growth as the result. Thankfully I have enough length on the top to make it look like I didn't even cut it. But yet and still I find myself stressing over it everyday I'm so obsessed with growing it back! I wish someone would have convinced me not to but it is still hair at the end of the day. I just miss it lol but it will eventually grow back again.

      I am so down for getting another undercut, its awesome and you get lots of compliments. Growing it out is a long process but its easy for me to cover it. I recommend you try it once in your life for the experience.

    I shaved my side and now it's growing out and I hate how uneven my hair is should I cut the rest of my hair to match it?

    • @reshawnsmith5990
      @reshawnsmith5990 7 років тому

      it depends on how attached you are to the length of the longer part of your hair

    • @Blackmixdwitblack
      @Blackmixdwitblack 7 років тому

      Reshawn Smith I am very attached

    • @reshawnsmith5990
      @reshawnsmith5990 7 років тому

      so then cutting it all off maybe isn't such a great idea, I'm going through a similar situation and have decided to just grow the sides. if you are very attached then maybe that's what you should do as well

      Call me Poetic I did a big chop in Jan .. and I cut off my sides too.. for me I'm trying g to let them grow the way it was going to and when it gets to a good length then I'll cut my hair to match.. try that

    Any advice for extremely slow growth at the crown of your head. My sides & back grow crazy fast. I can't retain length or volume at the crown :(. I feel like Bozo the clown with the way my hair is growing out smh.

    Women who wear perms are so jelous of natural hair women. We can wear it curly, blow it straight and flat iron it to make it look like a perm, roller set it, braid it. We have the best hair in the world and we are enveyed by many. Trust me. Naturals Rock
