I bid & won a 1876 seated half dollar for $35 about 6 months ago on eBay after losing the better one that I really wanted from the same seller. I figured I'd settle for the VG after losing the fine one. I received the coin a few days later, looked it over with the eye loop & found a faint but visible CC on the reverse- I was like a child on Christmas! I just started collecting about a year ago so I'd say that's some nice beginners luck. I'm assuming the seller was an amateur also! When I went back to the eBay picture they had up, sure enough, you could see the CC, faint but visible.
I have a one of the earliest ones that was not only scratched, but clipped (or something similar to clipped) on an edge both during production. It is in XF condition.
I know it's hard to believe, but I metal detected an 1870 CC quarter 3.5 years ago. Had a nail against it in the ground leaving an iron rust zit (easily removed by professional cleaning) and was only a F-12 but valued at $17,000. Sold it to Burton's Rare Coins, Grants Pass Oregon for $13,500. Maybe should have run it through an auction. Pictures available if anyone is interested.
Your 1863 seated liberty quarter has not been cleaned. The way to tell if a coin has been cleaned. Look around the edges of letters, stars, bust ect. basically the edge of all the raised surfaces on the coin, also if any indented groves in the raised surfaces look a lot wider or deeper then a normal example of the coin you intend to purchase it has been cleaned. Cleaning those grooves people will use a metal cleaning pick to dig out the dirt but this also ends up removing some of the coin's material it's made of. If there is a lot of fine scratches running parallel and very close to the edge of any or all the rasied object's or a very distinct and noticeable dullness from the rest of the coin's indented surface around any or all of the coin's raised surfaces on the obverse or reverse of the coin this is also a dead give away it has been cleaned. When people clean coin's they get really particular about the entire coin looking very clean. They end up using a toothpick or some other non metal object to try and remove the dirt from along all the raised details. Hope that helps you in the future when looking at coin's you intend to purchase.
I have an 1843 seated liberty one dollar, in good condition, as comparing on your grading, I wonder how it got here in the Philippines. I'm not a collector, I'm just curious. Nice video.
That was great, as I recently bought a seated liberty dollar and have been studying and reading about it. I wish your video would of came out a couple months ago, that was a great lesson. Thx for your vids!
Someone selling to me the same coin, year 1844, my query is when i weighed the coin i doubted to buy, because it weighs only 23.0 grams, is it fake? The coin was not attracted to a magnet & the sound of coin was unusual & i searched in numista the weight of coin is 26.73 grams, is the coin selling to me is fake, counterfeit or restrike? Pls enlighten me about the fake and the genuine coin, thanks.
Look at a high grade clean lustrous Morgan dollar using a single light. You more often find them in uncirculated condition than a peace, but wobble it like that it's easier to see cartwheeling on the bigger coins that have not circulated.
Nice coins SS, curious what the price difference and grade would be, being that you didn't mention it on the cleaned XF40 coin. So what is it worth before and after cleaning and did the cleaning change the grade? Thanks for sharing. aka Desert Rebel.
Au Rebel I added a price breakdown to the description for the new coins. As for the Standing, You get different opinions depending on where you look and the winds of collecting may change but I'll try to answer your question as I understand things. For a really high grade coin (MS60+) cleaning hurts it a lot. Those coins have high values because they are in original state and the cleaning completely disqualifies them from that. For a low grade coin (G-VG) it doesn't hurt it as much as most of the luster and original surface is gone. For my coin, one coin shop said cut the value in half, another another one just downgraded it to F (from XF). While they are probably right they are also probably low balling me a bit because they are a business. So, value wise the quick and dirty answer is that I went from about a $80ish coin to about a $50ish coin. I'm not happy about that. But, learning costs money and I learned a lesson. I also still think the coin looks very nice and, if grading standards change to be more forgiving to light cleanings, it may increase substantially in value to a collector.
Thank you for taking the time to answer my questions. I'm not into grading at all well because I know nothing about it yet. So thanks for helping out a lay person. :-)
Au Rebel No problem, and again I want to state that I'm very much an amateur at grading. So I could be wrong about virtually anything at any time without warning.
Sensible Silver I have a 1853 quarter dollar with an O mint mark right under the eagle. The outer ridges a still visible on the coin, an the letters on the shield are still in visible condition. is this a common coin. I'm subscribing to your channel pls answer me back when you get a chance. thank you
HorizonHunter The cleaning thing is a constant source of frustration for me. I'm trying to learn how to value things and what they are worth and there is this one variable that throws the whole thing completely off by a huge percentage and is very hard to pick out or even know what to look for.
Im going against popular opinion but I'd rather have a cleaned coin that shows the coins details well than an uncleaned one with dirt and shit all over it blocking the details.
I’ve always been hesitant to buy stuff online. Amazon Walmart Littleton: just no enthusiasm. There’s a coin shop I like but ultimately coin show is my preference I guess. I’m just done buying stuff without clarity. Costs more but it’s ok. Bill
I have some of the best seated and bust half I've every seen I use to collect coins 30 years ago they've been in a safe ever since that time. The bust I have are like 1824 26 and the seated are like 1863 67 range, I'm not sure on the dates Haven't looked at them in about ten years.
Thank you Kindly I just recently inherited several interesting coins, one that tickles my curiosity is a Liberty(seated) 1868 s. My grandfather never formally had his coins graded and written on the container is unc and after investigation , obviously I am biased :) , it appears to be in much better condition then is written. The details on this coin are extremely well defined and and it has a great original shine(despite some of the minor oxidation ). Any thoughts ????
