    The subject of this series:
    WE HAVE JUST completed one of the world’s longest and remote public tracks. (July 2017). This is the fabled Canning Stock Route. The Canning Stock Route is long, tough, rough but beguiling in its beauty and variety.
    The Canning Stock Route is a track that runs from Halls Creek in the Kimberley region of Western Australia to Wiluna in the mid-west region. With a total distance of around 1,850 km (1,150 mi) it is the longest historic stock route in the world. Once used as a route for cattle droves following a series of wells, it is now mainly used by adventure seekers looking for a challenge and solitude in the Australian outback. The last cattle drove the route in the 1930's.

    Great work Andrew, very informative. I agreed with you 100% concerning the transition from mirrored to mirroless cameras. I too was a Nikon enthusiast until I came across the Sony mirroless, and boy oh boy! What a beautiful little power house these little cameras are! I was a bit hesitant to make the transition but after doing my research I discovered the experts were all making the transition too. What makes the Sony mirroless so awesome is that they are so affordable in comparison to other manufacturers. I currently have the A6000 and my wife has the A5000, the quality of these cameras blows my Nikon D5100 out the window, not to mention it’s versatility and being able to connect to the internet makes the transition of images so easy. My next stop, the A7, but right now it’s out of my budget.

    3:37 If you want to get rid of camera shake easily and effectively get Olympus E-M1 Mark II with their 12~100mm F4, both body and camera have stabilisation and they work together to give even more stabilisation, and you can still use external mic, dual SD cards, because camera and lens are same brand, auto-focus is not an issue, though I agree you probably will need to use manual focus from time to time especially for video but that’s more or less the same for any camera using for video, try it first and thank me later if that works for you.

    Thank you for sharing your camera gear and explaining why you use each piece. Just like the rigs we drive, we each have a personal preference. I noticed that in the shots from your Osmo mounted on the windshield in the cab, the picture "swims" because the camera tries to remain level inside a shifting vehicle. Sharp turns create the same effect. Does that bother you or is the alternative worse?

    Another excellent video for those who like photography and video. I did my first video shooting this year on the Pirenees on a motorcycle trip and have been posting some videos on my channel - it's for me and my trip friends so super personal view and super amatour as i know nothing about video, but i fully apreciate what you said about choosing the perfect music for a video (on another video you did if i'm not mistaken). Bought a 98 euros Denver 1080hd action camera as i couldn't justify the price of the GoPro 5, the Denver is similar to the Hero 4 if i'm not mistaken at a fraction of the price, which is fine for a 1st adventure in filming.
    However, for what i've seen online, many consider the Sony FDR-X3000R superior to he GoPro, specially because of the optical image stabilization, although the downfall is it still needs the hardcase for being waterproof. Since you use a lot of Sony material, what are your thoughts on this?
    Thank you so much!

    I'm glad you touched on the batteries, but a "walkthrough" of how you manage the batteries for all that gear akin to what you did describing how you handle SD cards and file transfers to HD would be helpful. It very much sounds like you have a system that works for you, but it's perhaps less obvious to those of us who don't have to manage so many devices, but want to learn.

    • @4xoverland

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  6 років тому

      I have no 'final solution' for the batteries yet. By that I mean Heist overland and Redarc have not yet delivered the unit where I can measure and manage the batteries. Right now, they are working, but how well, I still cannot tell. I am chasing them for this product now and will let everyone know as I start phase-2 of the Troopy build in January.

      4xoverland I’m looking forward to it. I’m having issues with the CTEK system I have on my Landy. I switched to CTEK from a National Luna solenoid as the Landy doesn’t deal with charging AGM very well. Unfortunately I’ve had a couple of dead battery situations in the last couple of years, despite using the managed load output. I like the looking your new system so keen to hear if it lives up to expectations

    Hi Andrew, thanks for a great gear run down! Do you shoot with either LOG profiles on the DJI camera and mavic? Ive liked the dynamic range I can pull back into the images in post. Also having a ND64 POL filter for the mavic has really helped keep that shutter speed at 60 during the middle of the day.

    Hi Andrew, I have a question about your Osmo when you mount it on the windshield. Do you have issues with the gimbal playing up over rough surfaces? I used mine yesterday and found that even on just unsealed roads, every now and again, the gimbal would just spaz out and flop on an angle like it's sea sick haha. Kind of annoying but I'm assuming its a protective mechanism to prevent sudden continuous jolts ruining the motors. Just curious if you had experiences this also? Kindest regards.

    Hi Andrew, this is very interesting and informative. As an amateur 4wder and photographer its always interesting to see how the two hobbies come together. With regards to the go-pro, i'd love to get one to mount in my fortuner to record some of my adventures. As you're using the gopro 5 now, do you think that the stabilisation is enough to counteract the vibration from the engine etc? I'd love a 6 but they are still quite expensive. Thanks

    • @4xoverland
      @4xoverland  6 років тому

      Vibration from the road is an issue. If you want to shoot 4K, I have to ask why? It makes things challenging. I am looking at upgrading to the 6, but its expensive and I am looking at the Sony alternative right now.

      The list would not be unlike the one I use. It's not about the equipment so much as the storytelling. I could buy really expensive cameras, but those would just slow me down. I would change some of my lenses. But not much else, I'm happy to say. I would spend the money on crew, I think.

    • @interdec
      @interdec 6 років тому

      I'd be glad to hear the results of your research and your thoughts. I shoot in 30fps mostly because, just occasionally, I use a little bit of footage from my iphone 8, which is only 30/60. The only real problem I find with 30/60 is that occasional, with some incandescent lighting in the shot, there's a flicker caused by the 50Hz power supply here in Aus.

      4xoverland Hi Andrew, You have inspired me to not only become interested in overlanding, but to also start a UA-cam channel. I've been filming a few of my adventures and thought it's time I shared them with the world. I've been trying to work out whether there is a noticeable difference between 24fps vs 25 fps vs 30fps. Here in Australia we use PAL with the AC power being 50Hz, therefore I guess it makes sense to film at 25 fps (with a shutter speed of 50). But if you're filming outside, away from indoor lights, then it probably wouldn't matter, right? I've also heard that most computer screens display at 60Hz, therefore perhaps it makes more sense to film at 30fps?! I'd be interested to hear your thoughts.
      All the best,
      Attila

    What is the reversed plate on your wall?

      I stole it on a trip to Munich in 1985, from a boarding house when I stayed there. It is a genuine Nazi dinner plate.

    I cannot believe you have so few subscribers. If you hadn't "trashed" the UK recently you probably could've been a Sir but now it looks you'll have to stick with St

      It was actually a hidden COMPLIMENT attenborough vs ASPW hands down ASPW because he is just a great film maker but attenborough does a good job of narration. But trash away I can take it.

    Very enjoyable but what is actually on the back of this plate on the wall. A Nazi fighter plane maybe? Will there be a special unveiling video…?

      Its a Nazi plate I stole from a boarding house when I visited Munich in 1985. And the plane is a Hawker Hurricane flying low of the Kent wheat fields during WW2. I grew up in Kent. And no unveiling video is planned.
