I would say, keep them and when they start produce alates let them take a part on the naptual flight and record it for us, it will be amazing to see this colony reach that level!
Nice relaxing video, keep them if it isn’t too much of a hassle. But yeah with the drone thing a friend of mine left his higlighted yellow shirt out on the line and there were hundreds of drones on it. The drones are just attracted to everything.
Hello I need some help my coloney was doing well until I put them on hibernation I want to take them out but I don’t know if I should they have been there for two months now should o take them out
I love Iridomyrmex purpureus... My queen unfortunately die without no reason. Will buy them in the next year probably, I've never had a queen that I liked so much and unfortunately she died. Wish you good luck with them, they will thrive in the near future and hopefully they may be mature colony in about 2 years :D
Thanks so much Raf Ants! I too absolutely love this sp. I've heard quite a few people have had troubles with this sp. If you do buy another one in the future, I Wish you all the best with her. Let me know if you do get another one!
Do you know what species of ant this would be? Black ants with 2 white bands on the abdomen Larger than black house ants Non dense trails, but similar to the black house ant. Unfortunate dont have any pictures, i could get some though
Even though it is an indigenous colony it has come to rely on you for heat and food. My concern would be that they would not be adapted at this time to living in the wild. I don't know much about ants, I do love watching them build their colonies and grow. My experience though, having been raised up by Yellowstone Park here in the United States, is that once a creature has adapted itself to humans it generally will not survive well in the wild but, then again I'm talking about things like bobcats, skunks, raccoons etc. I am also sentimental and would be hard-pressed to let go of something that had so successfully survived and thrived. My best to you as well as to your ant colonies. 🐜😊
honestly i think you should release them since they´re in your area and native as well they are important to the eco system all the more because of the dangerous invasive species that live in australia like argentine ants every colony matters
To Keep Or Not To Keep The Golden Tail Sugar Ants. That Is The Question
Keep them there beautiful 😀

Keep!! It would be cool to see them live and grow in a bigger, naturalistic-like formicarium.

I've also had quite a lot of success with black light (after watching your video). And I also get waaaaaaaaaaaayyyyyyy more drones than queens.
That's awesome! Im glad Im not the only one getting so many drones! What have you caught so far?

Sugar ants can benefit from a source of urea, mealworms can contain high amounts of urea and there's likely more sources. There's also pee I heard 😳
Oh wow..I had no idea

Maybe the male ants are the only ones drawn into the black light, and the soon-to-be queens are attracted to the males' pheromones?
Plausible theory. I wonder if anyone has tried to work that out before 🤔
