When I have to bust rounds down I use the chainsaw. I've used a wedge and maul before no fun with aching shoulders.

I purchased a makita 30lb demolition hammer used from a rental yard for $200 and welded a wedge to one of mole points and use that to split oversized rounds. Keep up the great work.

Oh boy does this bring back childhood memories. We had to split everything large with wedges and a maul. That's because we definitely didn't have a splitter. I'm thankful for my hydraulic splitter and don't miss those days.

I don’t have a splitter, so I use a combination of noodling, 4 wedges and a sledge to break down big rounds to be able to lift in the truck to take home!! I try to make 3 ft. diameter my limit!! Natural seams like you have in that maple can be a godsend!! If there are no seams I take the saw and cut maybe a 2 to 3 inch groove in the top for the wedges to get started!! Also putting big rounds on end and noodling it down is a great option!! Enjoy your videos, you are a hard worker and a good guy👍👋

Doing fine, I used to start off sinking a chopping block that was on solid ground, the roll the piece I wanted to split over the chopping block, then start the wedge about 4” in from the edge. All wood behaves differently and I used a 2lb hammer the set the wedge, all this was 42 yrs ago. Good for you for trying the old way! 👍🏼🇱🇷

Love your channel! I’m sure your getting lots of advice and sorry for giving you mine too. Lol.
Those big rounds are best to start the split close to the edges. Use a sledge hammer to hit the wedge. About a 8 lb one. The splitting maul is not heavy enough. And good to have two wedges in case one gets stuck. I saw your slow mo of that wedge jumping back. My dad always warned me about that possibility.
Keep the vids coming. Stay safe.

I start at the outer edge of the round. A lot of times I hit the outer edge with the fiskars and don't need a wedge.

I use a 6ft pry bar to finish separating rhe wood, I've broken a maul handle off using it to pry the pieces apart. I waa splitting BIG rounds of oak, gave up on the wedge and maul (wedge kept popping out like your's) and just used the saw to rip them down into more manageable pieces.

A short chopping block helps. The soft ground is absorbing the blow. Forget the wedge. Swing the maul outside first then work to the middle. You know across it lol. Eat Wheaties. Use it as a table on the patio. Well all of these things should be options for next time lol

That's how I grew up splitting logs with my dad. It's a lot of work, but great exercise too! One tip I would suggest is to place your rounds on a solid surface. Between the spongy part of those logs, and the layers of mulch on the ground where they are sitting, its a natural trampoline for the logs to absorb the blows. A layer of rock, or placing two of those rounds on top of each other would make a big difference for you. Good luck with it in the future. Love the channel!

In my younger days (I'm 73) I used (and owned) nothing but a sledge, several wedges and an 18# Sotz Monster Maul. The Monster Maul could easily split anything up to about 30" diameter once you learned to let it do the work. (My sons were always challenging me and while they may have been almost as strong they failed to let the maul do the work!) Same with a sledge and a wedge. I used a 12# sledge (The smaller 6# and 8# mauls I found to be a waste of time and required too much energy!) and wedges like you were using. But I learned to never go in a decayed fault line. My wedges would always pop out because the wood was no longer hard and it was moist and slippery. I always started in a place that was closer to the edge away from the heartwood and would drive the wedge. Many times it would not completely split a 50+" round and would require a second wedge at the very end of my split.
Store your rounds and splits on their bark. In a day or two on a cut end and they can suck up enough moisture to take a month or more to dry out. Moisture does not go through the bark very easily!
Great videos and I can see you like the 500i!

Fair play, it makes you realise how much effort a splitter saves!
I use a smaller hammer to get the wedge properly started.
You should start a 30 minute high intensity training gym and just get the local fitness fanatics to come and swing the maul for you. You could charge them a couple of dollars for the privilege.

Hello Dan, thanks for the 😆 😀😀, next time try a new profile on the wedge, and take a wire wheel to the paint on that wedge and remove all of the shiny slick surfaces, to add to the grip of the wedge. Forged iron is porous and when painter it seals up the outer surface making it easier to jump out instead of gripping in!
I have found many people will buy a shiny new tool and expect it to work right out of the box, but many times it is the opposite that is true, give it a lot of use to fine tune it for you and you will have better results! Not everything manufactured tool today measures up to what our parents or grand parents had used, then we are disappointed with the product or the outcome, when it needs to be worked to get past the break in period!
Find two or three used and abused wedges at a flea market dress away any mushroomed heads, and resharpen them to the profiles they come with, then try again using 2,3 or all of the wedges you have, in one round, but don’t work one wedge at a time, take a hit on the farthest, then move to the next closer wedge and repeat keeping all of your wedges snug in the wood until the split.

Me and my buddy would split wood like this when we were younger. I was swinging a sledge hammer and the head flew off it, missing his face by inches. It was then that I learned to pay attention to what was in front of me when I'm swinging things like that. I still split by hand every once in a while. But for the most part I'm a splitter kind of guy now haha.

That 500i wedge would be faster! 😁 But that wood being green makes that wedge squirt out. Try using just the maul to get the crack open, then use the wedge. Also have a few wedges so when you jamb one you can get them out. Or you could buy a vertical big box splitter (I like Whackin Axes' model). Oh, ...Me and you seem to be in shape about the same ... maybe you should go ask Amanda to do that part .... 😁.. just kidding!!

Better option is to use my friends splitting unicorn that attaches to his Kabota and you drive up to the big ones and let the unicorn drill do it’s thing. As a young man did that type of work a lot, you need thinner wedges to start the split then the wedge with ears might have worked better. need to get the round up on something that will allow you to strike the wedge about waist high and straight on. what also was happening the rounds were bouncing when struck, throwing out the wedge. Now a days i just use the chainsaw to split them up, a lot easier

With a bit of time doing this you will improve, as with everything else we do! Next challenge using the maul and wedge to make kindling from those rounds!

  • @Redneck_Ed

I have that exact wedge but I only use it in conjunction with a narrow wedge which I drive in first. Otherwise you just get the bounce. I could grind the taper down as others gave suggested, but you kinda need to operate with 2 wedges anyways. I've cut slits in red oak before to start out and still had bounce. It just depends on the piece. It's a lot of work doing this stuff by hand. This is where your "stay safe" suggestion really comes into play because this kind of work will ruin your back if you don't use a proper technique for bending and lifting.

Potential BTUs recovered, 2,642,587: BTUs expended trying to recover them, 2,642,588! That tree had a lifetime of resilience built into it where that seam is so if it pops the wedge out, the only place it's going to split under human power is near the ends, usually on the more pointed side. If it pops out there also though, time to rework the bevel cheeks for harder wood as it must be set up for softer wood.

It's okay to put the wedge in a slight check crack. But the opening and or any punky wood will act as a spring and shock. You need healthy unfrosted wood for proper penetration and leverage!

Way to go! A few big rounds a day just to keep us honest. Don’t have a log lift, so familiar territory. Diddoztoday

Tip for you gentlemen, with the chainsaw, put a 1” score the round first and just drop your wedge in.

The way I do it is... I use 2-3 wedges, and a 15# sledge, and I don’t use checks as starting point.
