Metallica - Overload - Mucho-Demo (Fan Can 3, 1998) + B-Side Demos (1995-1996)

- "Overload - Mucho-Demo" is a set of demo recordings from the writing sessions of "Load" and "Reload", released as part of MetClub's Fan Can 3 in 1998. The tracks were recorded in Lars' basement studio (properly named "The Dungeon") between December 1994 and January 1995, mostly by just James - who did all guitar and bass parts on most songs - and Lars. While some of the featured material had been previously seen as b-sides (such as the demos for The Unforgiven II and Fuel), most of it was still unseen at the time. The three tracks that were released as b-sides but did not reappear on the compilation are also included here.

Holy fuck
Wanna know something even more impressive? It was all at once!
And all solos by James
he can also somewhat play drums and piano :D
yeah all at once james did but the albums load and re-load should have never come out. LOL
kashsoldier Why? Load and ReLoad are fantastic hard rock/heavy metal albums. James wanted them to be thrash, but the rest of the band didn't, I'm quite curious how 1996 Metallica Thrash metal would sound, I think it would be fucking epic, but I think that Load and ReLoad are a good substitution.
These demos make me realize 2 things. One being how genius Hetfield is - and two, how Jason must have felt at this time. Like, the songs are virtually done before he even plugged his bass in for Load and ReLoad on 90% of them. He must have felt like a hired hand by this period. Guy had writing credits you could count on one hand after 14 years with the band.
Not really, Metallica has always worked like that (with the exception of St. Anger, that was more democratic), but even on the Cliff Burton days, it was James and Lars demoing the stuff, with sometimes Kirk doing a quick solo here and there. So this wasn't anything new for Jason. Funnily enough, this was probably the best time for the band while Jason was in there, they were really getting along and having a great time.
Every ship has its captain.
James and Lars were always the song writers in the band. Many bands have a similar writing process.
It's pretty much Ulrich's ship. The other 3 are invested in the journey.
@@tun-tunninc.6492no its james and lars. james is more integral coz he writes nearly all the riffs and lyrics

true
It's an uncommon Kirk lick. He uses it very little as the Dyers Eve and My Friend of Misery licks that he plays in the San Diego guitar solo
@@sancamilobad Might be a Kirk lick, but all the guitars, including solos, on these demos are played by James. I think he's always just jammed whatever comes to mind to act as a placeholder in the songs.
brilliant material for really Metallica's fans
I never thought there would be an album where it's just James singing "YEAH! NAH! OHHHHH! YEAH!"
And it's amaze.

Must been your first time listening to their demos then. Literally all their demos have this except maybe their first couple. Literally can here scat lyrics of every single album they have ever made.

My parties are gonna rock.
Excellent. Really weird to hear this version of "ain't my bitch" with James singing "yeah yeah na na na" all the way through. I remember an interview in which James said he struggled with the lyrics for Load and Reload. At the time I thought "why did he struggle?" but looking back it was a huge increase on what he originally had to come up with for a Metallica album. It wasn't just that it was 2 albums. It was compounded by the CD era. 8 or 9 tracks was usual for an album in the 80's. In the 90's artists were under pressure from record companies to come up with more tracks for Cd albums. James wrote lyrics for 7 tracks on RTL and MOP and 8 on AJFA. on the Black album with the advent of the CD era that went up to 12. On load and reload he had to come up with lyrics for 27 tracks (14 on load and 13 on reload). Thats more sets of lyrics than he wrote for RTL, MOP and AJFA put together. In the 80's, with an instrumental on each album 27 tracks would have been enough for 4 albums. No wonder he was happy to share lyric writing with the rest of the band on St Anger.
Also, this is the time he was really starting to write more personal lyrics, things about his upbringing, his addictions, and the mindfuck of becoming famous and rich. Personally, I think these are some of his best lyrics, because they're so personal.
You made your point pretty early there, no need to beat a dead horse
@@shytownmofo Well, Hetfield tries. Keyword "tries." It gets spread so thin across all the songs that it almost becomes laughable at times (looking at you Thorn Within). Vague allegories just don't hit hard, frankly.
Wasting My Hate is my all time favorite Metallica song. Wish they played it live more
Jacob Madden it's too bad this song has no solo
The solo doesnt matters
Yeah i love the riff
@@PaulPodcastOFFICIAL1 its not bad, but its kinda weird that his favourite song is that

Damn jaymz has a badass bass tone going on devils dance. He could seriously make anything sound good.
So... Low Man's Lyric had a solo, and even more then it! It was another song!
I really like James' solos
Devils Dance has always been a personal favourite of mine, so thick and heavy, and sounds heavy as fuck on this
Drums sound like Death Magnetic
Same drum kit. Tama Starclassic Maple & same Tama PM426 3mm thick Bell Brass Snare he used in studio since 1990 and live of 91-2000.
sucks

Thanks man! excellent work, this is gold!

Mama said sounds amazing with clean solos (the beautiful chorus pedal adds a next level to it )
I really liked the so!o on load (king nothing).
Great !!!!
Mine eyes - awesome!!!
Fascinating insights into Metallica's songwriting process - to see what the original ideas for each song were, what was deleted, what retained ... I think most changes they undertook afterwards were probably for the better (Fixxxer is better off without that "Time waits for no one" lyric), but it's also interesting to see that something like "Low Man's Lyrics" could have been developed into a very different song ... I think James was at his songwriting peak here
the outlaw torn sounded good
unforgiven 2 sounds like a heavy metal love song.
Это тоже из папиного диска.

mola, es inspirador
I can feel a strong influence from Iommi in his solos.
"What I've felt, what I've known, yeah, nee yeah neeeaa yeah.." Lovely jj.
So much feeling in Mama Said
Thank you Kirk for the solo that ended up in Devil's dance, it's insane! but this shit is pure gold, amazing material!
That is James, dumbass.
45:25 yeah non in yeah neee no no no yeah!
Cool. I prefer these songs much more than both albums.
Jason and Kirk was atleast on Until It sleeps demo. James said he come up with the song in the studio and all played along to it live on the demo
Some of these songs were recorded by James and Lars in Lars' home studio and some are from the Load/ReLoad sessions and therefore have Jason and Kirk on them. 👍
wah-na-na! \m/
This really shows still how much Kirk & Jason still didn't get to contribute when they said these 2 albums they let them run free
When you let Kirk run free, you get lyrics like "my lifestyle determines my death style..."
Just sayin'.

Bleeding Me demo called "Boss"

For a demo, them guitars sound really powerfull.
Was James using wah on Fixer?
That guy either had a vision or was losing his mind
he was using a yeah or wah nah
The lyrics are somehow more positive/affirming here.
SWEET EVEN I´M NO FAN OF THE LOAD PART....OKAY THATS 15 DEMOS OUT OF ALL THE SONGS COULD BE COOL TO HAVE THE REST OF THE SONGS AS DEMO AS WELL
Fuck yeah.raw heavy
Haha James is more creative with his solos than Kirk. Also, James is a pretty good bass player. The man can do it all
Johnny Utah420 this is just Lars and James?
Yes, just lars and james. And yeah James is for sure. He hasn't trained himself to be a lead player like kirk has, but he's definitely got better musical sensibilities.
James is not just more creative than Kirk but surely better too. 90% of the riffs, rhythm and lead come from him alone. Even drunk, his stage performance was solid and faultless except when he decided to improvise without seriousness. There is also how to play and the way he holds his pick with 3 fingers (thumb, index, middle finger). A technique that I use myself but is not given to everyone. I learned this way and it can be more precise, fast without the assistance of the forearm for up & downpicking very fast. We have seen it a few times on the Making Of that Kirk had trouble following some of James' rhythm riffs. In addition, the few solos signed James (1st solo Master, Nothing Else Matters, his solos on Load & Reload and even that of Just A Bullet Away EP in 2011 are deeper, expressive, more emotional. It could do without Kirk, but if he was playing rhythm, lead and solos and singing, it would be more like a band but rather a solo artist with musicians under contract. To return to Kirk, he was very good on the first 4 albums When his solos were technical and without Wah Pedal ... Since their apogee, his solos have become ordinary, lines of guitars just to say that the song has his solo and on stage, ca Wah Pedal rack format, the modulation adjusted to the more broadly camouflage his false notes or the forgetfulness of certain passes .. Too much alcohol and drugs I imagine ...
@@jean-pierrebernatchez1100 kirk can still write good solos I just don't think he puts in efforts and just improvs it all. death magnetic had some great solos from him but hardwired and the new song are just ehh. He needs to be pushed to get the best out of him, james seems to be naturally very creative.
I prefer this Low Man’s Lyric to the final one. Much heavier but still a ballad. It sounds much better. I actually think if Load and Reload were combined into one album it would have been one of the best they’ve made. Both albums are cool tho
Still waiting for TAB on wasting my hate unused solo. That solo is amazing
Yo la puedo sacar
Hard to believe how fast times goes. How the fuck in Load 20 yrs old already?
Thesis is just James and Lars correct? So this is James soloing? Refreshing....
yes
actually you can see james doing solos in various songs and lives, and if im not wrong he records lots of solos and not just in the demos
One could guess since the solos aren't dogshit like what Hammet plays.
The intro to Ain't My Bitch is so much better than the album version. Would have loved hearing Jason tear that up live.
interesting to see that appearently James writes the riffs first and the lyrics afterwards... I personally prefer doing it the other way.
Marshall_MfH it works for him very well.
Paul Simon does similar, if I recall. Something about a bouncy ball, a room, and bouncing the ball at tempo against the wall.
Pay no attention to the idiot rambling, he needs sleep (as is evidenced by him speaking in third person)
He writes The best riffs when he's in a good mood and when he's in bad mood, he writes The best lyrics
I have to write riffs first so I know what kind of lyrics I can put with it. If I write lyrics first I won't know what kind of riffs to put with it. It sounds weird but it's a really effective method for me
Makes sense really as lyrics are secondary when it comes to this form of music. It's like a puzzle, you fit the words around the music. Most rock & metal bands with non-guitar playing frontmen also work this way
Imagine if we got Overload instead of Load and Reload?
And imagine if the production on the albums was a tab bit worse? And it was released in 1996 and then we got Garage, Inc? And then S&M, then some missing album?
ehhheeeeeeyeah!
They should have kept the "Yadda nay yaaaaaa" part. lol
Ain’t My Bitch sounds great with the bass intro
I see you I see me?
I see you! I see me! I see you! Now Meeee-eee-heee!!!
This list would actually have been quite good just as one long album. No Slither :D
So true.
Only negative, looking back, is that there was too much filler on those albums, condense them in to 1, with the best 13 to 14 songs, would have been magnificent.
Tell me about it... Slither is actually the ONLY MetallicA song I don't like. Hate to admit that. METAL UP YOUR ASS 🤘🤘🤘
@@diesel3333 I prefer Slither to Am I savage?
Mine Eyes (Low Man's Lyric) Sounds great, I like this version better.
the demo contains the best from the two albums... they should have released a single album with the songs from the demo. Though I saw also the making of Ronnie from the same period, why this is not in the demo ?
