I have an ‘81 Diesel 5 speed. It’s a weird little truck and gets lots of stares. I’ve had several offers, but it’s not for sale. I found it last year in a tree line in ND. Been sitting for 17 years, most of those indoors I’m told, only about 5 years outside. Odometer showed 84,041 miles. It’s now roadworthy and I’ve got about 9,000 miles on it since I dragged it home.
@@eltico1986 Youre a fucking twat. You shouldn't feel the need to call people idiots for wanting to like older cars. I'm 17 and know more about my older cars than you do probably. Fuck outta here
These trucks are awesome and the diesel version is even better. I've never had much trouble finding parts for my truck. If you ever take one of these trucks off-road, they do surprisingly well with their short wheel base, front wheel drive, and heavy duty oil pan. I have hauled 18 sheets of T-111 with it and overloaded it numerous other times and it always made it home. I laughed when I saw that none of the gauges worked, as this is a common problem, especially the speedometer/odometer. Back in the late 90's when I bought my first VW pickup, they were extremely cheap to maintain as there were still lots of VW Rabbits in the junkyards. I absolutely love my truck; I wish VW would make a new version with a TDI diesel. Thank you for the review and video. Take care.
@@firingallcylinders2949 you got to know where the yards are and collectors. Of course the internet has them all there but finding VW mk1 locally is usually difficult.
Wow. I had a diesel one of these back when they were new! Our family had it for years and loved it. I got incredible mpg (40+) and easily passed other cars in the snow with it's front wheel drive. Someone drove almost every day. So much fun and very handy. I think the only reason I got rid of it was because I got tired of helping everybody move!!
The 'early westy' package you referred to isn't a thing. Early westys were rabbits built '76-'80 in the Westmoreland plant in Pennsylvania. This truck is a late westy ('81-'84) with the LX package. Late westys big wrap-around blinkers, the hatchbacks had longer tail lights, and they had slightly different interiors. The LX package gave it the bed rails, wood grain dash, and a sliver stripe around the grille
The owner didn't try very hard. I have yet to find any parts that are hard to find, either over eBay or any number of resellers, new and used. And the diesel gets between 52 and 60MPG, and if you run vegetable oil instead of petro-diesel, even more mileage out of purchased fuel. I own two, They rock.
The reason modern vehicles can't get crazy high mpgs like the 80s & 90s, emissions and safety. Those older cars had less sophisticated more robust engines with leaner air fuel ratios. Those lean ratios provided amazing efficiency, but created a lot of NOX emissions. The safety part is that the construction of older cars used much lighter frames and bodies that didn't have much crash protection, but resulted in very light efficient cars.
A old man in town still has a 82, been pulling his flat boat with it for decades. It has around 260k miles on it, and still looks good. Mr Fritz must be in his 80s but he takes care of his toys. His buddy also has a forgotten truck from the 80s, Subaru Brat.
Very good video, allthough the company manufacturing the clock is not called quartz. If it says quartz on a clock it just means that the clock works with a battery and a quartz cristall, for example there are even quartz rolexes..
devilskullBEL I completely agree with you. This kid doesn’t know anything about this VW. Towards the end of his “review” he explains that VW made the rabbit pickup for auto shops to haul parts and tools in because of the trucks fuel economy and size? Seriously? I thought the quartz clock comment he made was ridiculous but that wasn’t the end of his total lack of knowledge about the rabbit pickup.
I have an 81 in yellow! 1.6 diesel! Christmas will get here before it hits 75, but I’ve moved a full sized fridge, a mini fridge, and some chairs in one load. I also moved, over the course of a couple weekends mind you, roughly 3 tons of production vinyl. I got a pretty good look at what it’ll look like once I lower it.
I drive one of these trucks and yes people say " I NEVER SEEN ONE OF THESE!" daily. They will run across the street with oncoming traffic wide eyed screaming and waving at the truck. I get people beeping at me twice a day at least. It's like driving a lambo with a supermodel inside.
Very true about not having simple pickups that aren't about going all terrain, towing and what not. Makes me miss lightweight chicken tax pickups, they were really used for work even if they were small.
I love this video. I just bought one as a project car and it's been amazing. These trucks are something very unique and there isn't anything really like them. Even the jdm trucks of the 80s were a little bigger than this
Drove one of these back in the day. And, yup..they made excellent part runners. Fuel milage on the diesel was better than 45 MPG. But ya had to warm those glowplugs. Wish they'd bring back these no-frill mini trucks.
Just found on in Columbus back in April so much fun to drive and gets so many looks and people asking about the pickup in general. If you find a decent one ever I highly recommend it

3 + E, and 4 + E Volkswagen manual transmissions had deeper overdrive gears as compared to the "Normal" manual transmission in a Volkswagen. The +E transmission VWs also came with a shift light, to aid you in maximizing your mileage. The "storage" pod under the Vent/Heat Control was actually the 4th set of vents for the Factory installed A/C if the car was equipped. The owners of the VW trucks really held onto these trucks, they were "rare" even when they were new. I had both a '82 Rabbit 2 door, and also bought and rebuilt a '81 Rabbit pickup way back in the late 80's. Volkswagen also made diesel versions of Rabbits including the diesel Rabbit Pickup, these diesels got 50 mpg if driven correctly. The Gas version with a 1.7 made 78hp, and the diesel version made 48 hp.(same hp of a air cooled VW Bug at the time) VW added a turbo to diesels to improve performance in the 1990's. It was fun watching a kid review a truck that had been made at least 25 years before he was born. I've driven nothing but Volkswagens since I started driving in 1976.

I’m surprised you didn’t comment on why the number 55 was so humongous on the speedometer. Kind of ironic that small unibody pickup trucks are all the rage ever since the Ford Maverick and Hyundai Santa Cruz revisited the same idea as the VW Caddy (especially with the rising cost of gas). Now Ram, Chevrolet, and Toyota are all rushing to come up with their own small compact-based unibody pickup trucks. Ford can't even keep up with the demand for their Mavericks.
Oh man the 1.7 engine in this car is there because of fuel economy thats right and the reason for this is that this car comes from germany, developed for europe, where fuel costs more than twice as much as in the US...
Actually, This was built for the US the European side didn't get it not the Volkswagen Rabbit. The Volkswagen Rabbit is the competitor for the ram 50, the mitsubishi mighty Max, A Ford Ranger, the Nissan hard body, The Toyota Tacoma, And the Chevy S10 in the olden days anyway. Some vehicle companies went for mileage per gallon. While others decided to go for Hp/torque. The Volkswagen sold because it was a diesel engine option vehicle and got almost 50 to 60 miles to the gallon for a pick up!! The ram 50 did the same thing/ But they had options to go for a horse power diesel engine with lots of torque 295' pounds Ford and Chevy came up with 4.0l v6s Toyota And Nissan had options for extended cab long beds. Which is why they sold. The long beds nowadays are kind of a joke 6' 2f Verses the older long beds. Which where 7F to 8f! Long For small pick ups!!? Not to mention they lasted for ever they were built like tanks!! They don't make them like they used too. :(
First thing said: "this truck is everything a truck shouldn't be" continues to say it's a economy car with a 1.8 and doesn't even mention the class of pickup (LUV)

The ram 50 did the same thing/ But they had options to go for a horse power diesel engine with lots of torque 295' pounds
Ford and Chevy came up with 4.0l v6s
Toyota And Nissan had options for extended cab long beds. Which is why they sold.
The long beds nowadays are kind of a joke 6' 2f
Verses the older long beds.
Which where 7F to 8f! Long
For small pick ups!!?
Not to mention they lasted for ever they were built like tanks!!
They don't make them like they used too. :(
How tall are you??
That definitely a unicorn. With the whole chicken tax thing
An orange eject thumb triggered seat buckle!!! Wooow I’ve never heard of such a thing in anything else other than a rabbit truck!
First thing said: "this truck is everything a truck shouldn't be" continues to say it's a economy car with a 1.8 and doesn't even mention the class of pickup (LUV)
Do you like the mazda b2200 pick up truck
Quartz is a company?! WtFuh!...
Ive got one in pistachio with the 1.9 turbodiesel and a 4 speed haha
I can't even drive my Rabbit diesel truck., It gets too much attention. Stick out like a sore thumb everywhere I go. I just let it sit there in my driveway most of the year.
Downside is your head rests on the headliner. Hehe
How can i check my vin # on this trucks? Since it has less numbers.
Like any other...most old cars are missing a digit
Quartz is not a company dufus. It means there's a quartz crystal keeping the time. It's a technology brag.
You’re a clown if you don’t appreciate this beautiful piece of engineering. Saying the displacement is odd makes no sense when you have 1.8 liter Hondas pushing 1000whp.
I have had over 25 of these bought and sold I drive one too still 810-272-8297 have parts and sometimes still some to sell
Do you have an email?
Where are you located im looking for one
I want this truck to LS swap and spend all of my money on
Jeco made the clock in your RX-7.

There are a lot of Honda’s with a 1.7 so there not that unheard of
This truck also has something called wheels. Amazing, since these were invented by a caveman.
some aftermarket parts are good and some are junk on a Rabbit
They were built in the US because of the chicken tax. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicken_tax
Turning radius? How’s the steering feel? Brakes?
