  • We have heard over and over again maybe for the past 15 years that Jamaica has a significant potential to develop as a major producer and exporter of freshwater ornamental fish raised for the aquarium industry. Jamaica has an excellent climate and location to produce some of the best fish in the world.
Despite investments in training and resources provided to farmers and newcomers to the industry, there seem to be hindrances to getting to that potential. I discussed with Raliegh who himself is a hobbyist, creates videos teaching about fish keeping and has a very good blog on fish farming in Jamaica both under the name of Fish Keeping Jamaica.
We discussed what are some of these obstacles which to name a few are lack of trust between farmers, government beauracracy is a hindrance to exporting, resources are not available and shared equally between farmers within the industry. We also discussed how the industry has been divided into different groups over the years.
    .
With obstacles there are solutions and we delved into possible solutions to move forward.
