    i had the pleasure to meet this "boy wonder", some 30 years ago, when working in the same field as he, in Providence, RI, where he conquered another masterful career. you knew then that he was a superstar, straight from the rip. not surprised seeing him master this, as well. God bless.

      We know many people that would agree with you! 🤣 The winds were forecast to be 20 knots on the nose after the calm which is never very comfortable so we took the easy way out.

    Your sails look done - the leach on that main has given up long ago. As one of the few UA-camrs that can actually sail.... you know you need to get new sails. Incidentally a NZ company - C Tech - makes almost indestructible carbon battens. Expensive initially but we'll worth the peace of mind.
    The bay of virgins is one of my favourite anchorages, partially because it's so hard to get to. I have been lucky enough to have been there on four separate trips....

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  6 місяців тому +2

      😂😂😂😂 you got that right!! Our main is in terrible shape and I am surprised we can still sail! We began with poor quality, then she was eaten by rats in Fort Lauderdale. The headboard broke during the passage to Panama, we have glued it up and repaired a number of times, the first batten broke (twice) all the stripes peeled off just a few months after we started using it. The Velcro in the batten pockets is falling off and even the manufacturer logo fell off immediately 😂😂😂😂. Yup, a 3 year old sail that looks like a 20 year old canvas.
      Thanks for the tip on c tech, for watching and for commenting! And BTW thank you for the compliment 😊😊😊

    Sorry I was slow getting onto this weeks vlog! WOW, what a great episode and even better - you finally caught a fish and not just any fish a huge tuna !!! YAY! Well Done. This has been a great sailing episode too. Ok, so you ask us what WE would do. Well not knowing just how much provisions you have on board and given the fuel issue at Fatu Hiva (NO fuel in January), I would have made my decision and made it earlier - more on that in a minute. It was funny because you asked this question of us right before the next days footage which showed becalmed seas with no wind. This can always become the case and it's at these times that you need your engines and fuel obviously. You never know when this will happen, and more importantly, how long that condition will last. Knowing these facts I would have sailed further off the wind and gone for more speed even though you would cover more miles (you often see racing sailors do this in catamarans because they have the speed to make it work) - and I probably would have done this earlier rather than later, making us e of the wind while you have it. Hell, you out there to sail and have adventure right? That's why you bought a sailing boat, yes?! Not a stink boat. When the doldrums kicks in that's when you can start up the motors. But it's always a trade off as you 'may' have had to motor a little further if you'd had sailed a little more off course, so it's a toss up, right? I guess you made the right decision and got there early. I hope you have enough fuel for the month. You certainly will have enough food/fish! 🤣 Anyway, you did good and now you can rest at Fatu Hiva safely for the cyclone season. YAY! Fair 💨's and Following 🌊's.

    • @HarborsUnknown
      @HarborsUnknown  6 місяців тому +1

      Thank you!! We were fortunate, later we were able to sail to Hiva Oa with plenty of diesel to spare and the fuel restrictions had been lifted and we filled up.

      We would love to replace the main, but for now we can only replace the batte for a couple of reasons. #1 location, everything is more expensive in French Polynesia and it takes forever to get it. #2 budget, we we planned for at least 5 years of use out of this main.

      @@HarborsUnknown you probably could start shopping around. I'm sure you might make a different material choice or do a square top instead of a high roach, etc.. shopping takes time, design takes time. You could always post-date a future order for example like "may 2025" and use that as negotiating leverage to book a good price for your order. If are methodical in your procurement you'll get exactly what you want at a good price rather than whatever you can get at the price you can afford or the time frame you need it.
