    What's up HACKERS!
    Welcome to today’s video on Parabola/quadratics. We are going to go over the 3 types of questions you must know to answer all the parabola/quadratics questions on the SAT.
    Type 1: Definition of the root / Finding roots
    What you need to know - Recognize that when the equation is set equal to zero, the solution is referring to the root/x-intercepts. (When y=0, it’s referring to the x-intercepts)
    How to recognize - Equation with a highest power to the 2.
    What to be aware of - There are two ways to find the roots - factoring & quadratic formula. Always use factoring and only use the quadratic formula when the answer choices have radical and/or +/- in it.
    Type 2: Sum of the roots
    What you need to know - the equations for sum (-b/a) and product (c/a)
    How to recognize - The question will directly ask you to find the sum / product of the solution.
    What to be aware of - When asked to find a sum/product DO NOT FIND EACH SOLUTION INDIVIDUALLY. You will eventually get the answer, but It’s a huge waste of time
    Type 3: Number of roots
    What you need to know - You can find the # of roots a parabola has via discriminants (b^2-4ac).
    How to recognize - The question will either say that the parabola has “no solution” “one solution” or “two solutions.” Remember, you can only use discriminants for a PARABOLA. Similar question will show up for two lines, but you can’t use discriminant for lines (it doesn’t have a,b,c to plug into the discriminant formula.
    What to be aware of:
    1. Don’t use it for the line.
    2. There are two types of discriminant questions the SAT asks for. Finding the # of roots is the first type, the second type is finding the number of intersection between line and a parabola. The second type is covered in the lecture link above.

    Everything on this video is still tested on the Digital SAT. If anything new is added, will create a new video.
    The "t" I plugged @ 11:51 should've been "-t" (because the "c" value is -t) ===> So the sign for the final answer would be flipped and the correct answer would be A

    you could also think about the last problem conceptually but it's more difficult. if you move "t" over to the left (2x^2 -4x - t = 0) you know t has to be negative to create a positive "c" value, since the graph opens upwards due to the positive "a" value; this would allow there to be no x-intercepts. out of answer choices "a" and "b," without doing any calculations "a" is a better choice because it's higher up and therefore less likely to dip below the x-intercept, which would give the quadratic solutions. thanks for the vid :)

    I think there is a mistake with the third question
    It should be (-t) not (t) john

    I just did the #13 that you did but the scoring sheet says the answer is A?

    • @JohnSAT
      @JohnSAT  4 роки тому +2

      That's correct! The "t" I plugged @ 11:51 should've been "-t"
      So the sign would be flipped and the correct answer would be A. Thanks for pointing it out

    I'm not sure why you take up half the screen with a view of you looking down at the problem. Much more useful if you expand the math part of the screen.

    For the last problem
    we can easily solve it, if we use simple calculus.
    2x^2 - 4x = t can be written as 2x^2 - 4x - t = 0
    derivative of the expression above is 4x - 4, since t is a constant.
    we can find the critical point by finding the root of 4x - 4 = 0
    and the critical point is at x = 1
    insert 1 in 2x^2 - 4x - t > 0
    solve for t and that will give you t < -2

    for the sum of roots isnt the answer suppose to be -8 since the formula is -b/a

    • @user-pr2os3ky2r
      @user-pr2os3ky2r 5 місяців тому

      no. b is -16, so -(-16)/2 = 8. 2 negative signs multiplied make a positive. he did the last problem wrong though in the video because he didnt move t to the other side of the equation to resemble the general form where c would be -1t.
