This was exactly one week before my 16th birthday, and the episode of _RAW_ (March 17, 1997) featuring Bret Hart screaming obscenities like a sailor at Stone Cold re: their WM 13 match (and the best damn match in _WrestleMania_ history; I stand by that statement) to end the show LMAO. What a time to have been alive. Also, this show was the first time in WWF to use Marilyn Manson's "The Beautiful People", ca. 4½ yeara before becoming the _SmackDown!_ theme. on its August 16, 2001 episode, which also debuted the famous " fist" set for the show.

The Bret 20 year contract situation is just an inverted employment at will. Bret's clauses were legal because both parties negotiated for them and they weren't so unfair (unfair in this context is basically that the WWF isn't dumb, they understand what is going on), he had to give a 30 day notice before quitting and was given automatic creative in those 30 days. But because the title was on the line in creative, it would've created an even worse look for wrestling, having a court case over whether Bret should've won the match. He could have sued WWF, saying that the company breached the contract by not giving Bret 100% creative over losing the title, which led to him losing out on the very unique contract, but it would essentially lead to having to tell courts exactly how creative works in the business. Bret probably didn't want to overly expose wrestling himself.
WCW from 1999 to 2001 was some of the most putrid garbage ever put on television. WWF was far superior which is why it crushed them in the ratings and still exists today.
