They literally *make* tracing paper and light boards specifically for artists to trace. I stg Reddit and Instagram have some of the most brain-dead users that dwell in the comment section. Just a bunch of high and mighty wannabes feeling a little _too_ comfortable and confident saying dumb shit they're ignorant about.
Artists can never catch a break whether it's entitled people thinking they have a right to our works, or other people thinking they can "tell" artist what they should and shouldn't do when their only crime was trying to grow their brand. Which is _really hard_ for a lot of artists to do.

Ive used the internet to improve my art skills for as long as I knew of it’s existence. I never noticed how ingrained some of the internets most absurd ideas about art were until I actually entered art school and I found a light box in the classroom! I was so terrified of tracing even my own sketches that my teacher had to convince me it wasn’t a crime 😭. I wonder how many people take these extreme opinions to heart like I did but never see another perspective and suffer for it

One of my college drawing professors had a whole week dedicated to teaching us different tracing methods. As long as you aren’t stealing other people’s work and presenting it as your own, I don’t think there is any harm in tracing. Personally, tracing helped me learn a lot about dimensions and perspective. It’s always disheartening to hear people who know nothing about art demonize it.

The IRL art community is so refreshing after years of being in the online art communities. People aren’t as snotty towards you, the criticism is always helpful; it’s less rigorous and they’d be more impressed with the fact that you made art on MS Paint than willing to doxx you. IRL art is a lot less pressure and the people in that community are very often a lot more accepting.

As someone who is an artist (mostly as a hobby as I cant afford to just do art), I feel like the situation was blown way out of proportion. Yes, his art could use improvement - its not particularly striking as is but he does have talent in art and it just needs to be refined and he should spend time trying to figure out what kind of art he wants to make and focus less on whatever might strike someone else's fancy. The comments about him tracing are unecessarily harsh - not everyone wants to draw directly onto a large canvas, and its easier to draw your sketch elsewhere sometimes and then transfer that to your canvas. Overall, i think the kid handled this situation as best he could, and people should really stop attacking him over something that really isnt that big of a deal.

I’m constantly on the lookout for new paintings, do you have a portfolio yet? I’d love to see your work! Also please don’t be discouraged, I think the main reason for the flack this kid is getting is due to his art not conveying anything. It’s essentially a practice piece rather than a self or outward reflection of anything, it’s like someone submitting their fruit stills to a gallery, that type of ballsiness usually doesn’t fair well on the internet. But the piece itself is not saying anything about the statues or a bygone past with how pristine they are, the splatters seem like ways to fill empty space because he’s not actually confident in his work yet to display any vulnerability, same goes with his branded persona.
I have art from aspiring artists in my collection and even though they are rough and the techniques are still rudimentary, they are still so interesting because of what they are. Reflections of the artist, the essence of what the artist is trying to express of themselves and it’s why it’s so good, so do keep creating and don’t let the internet get to you or your journey as an artist.

i've learned not to criticize based on how interesting art is to me, personally. like i used to hate acrylic pours cause i thought they were 'basic'. looking back, i feel like i was the basic one lol. now i have a beautiful set of acrylic poured coasters i found, and i can really appreciate the texture and craftsmanship of them. if i don't like a specific pour then that's ok, it doesn't mean someone's art is worthless.

Not amazing, but at 18 when I first got to college I wasn’t making insane original artwork yet. It takes time and an understanding of the art world AND HISTORY to create something original. Now galleries are also tricky though bc they often look for a certain “look” so I wouldn’t go applying to them Willy nilly. But when I saw this video I didn’t even comment on it, it looks just like a bunch of my former classmates works which were then critiqued in class by the professors. We learn and grow and change. If an artist wants to go with a gallery, they're best finding an artist run one or an indie one where they'll actually be appreciated.

As a former 18 year old artist myself, he’s literally doing nothing “wrong.” Omg, I look back at my portfolio from that time, stuff I was super proud of at that age and skill level that I just absolutely cringe at now😂 some has held up, some I still love, but my god there’s a few where I’m like my art teacher must have thought I was koo koo bananas when I made this😂 there was a nugget of my personal style forming there, but I was literally only like 1-2 years off from just drawing anime, and even 10 years on from that I’m still developing my personal style and who I am as an artist. I think social media has taught us it’s bad to be “cringe” but like, teenagers are inherently awkward we just didn’t have as much permanent documentation of that before now and there’s this weird pressure to be a fully formed perfect human in your online presence which just isn’t reality.
A lot has changed in the almost decade since I was there, social media and how young creatives use it is entirely different, and it’s so easy to open yourself up to what you think is useful critique but ends up just being people hiding behind a screen typing out every negative and hurtful thing. When you pursue art you learn how to give critiques that help people better themselves and their art and doesn’t just drag them and their art down for the sake of it. There’s a difference between being constructive and being destructive, both may hurt but one is meant to help. People really just want to hate on people sharing their creativity while pretending like they’re offering helpful advice.
6:50 the comment telling him to stop posting his progress online just absolutely hurts my soul. Why not? Why can’t he share? People share every other minute random minutia of their lives online. I see peoples random art come across my shorts all the time and I always give it a like because they had the courage to share that with the world and internet strangers. Art doesn’t need to be “perfect” to be shared, “good” art is subjective anyways.
Anyways, I hope he keeps pursuing it, learning, and can look back on himself in 10 years and maybe cringe a bit but also have a little pride for having the gumption to pursue this and share it.

as a """professional"""" artist, the whole thing abt people getting mad abt tracing was bizarre. i think this is one of those situations where people need to learn to use the block button instead of leaving comments telling a guy to get off the platform. hes making very much "high schooler" art. rooted in trite concepts, very collage looking, and refrencing more famous art styles/works. to me that makes sense w how much its drilled into young artists to "study the masters." hes just doing what he thinks it takes to be successful. that being said, there is something to say about how the paintings themselves to a degree but the generalized responces on tiktok were all like, facist talking points. the hatred towards "modern art" (our notion of "modern art" isnt even modern anymore! a lot of the works most mocked in these circles are decades old now!) is quite literaly a common facist talking point and honestly, not the kind of thing you want to put down in comparison to a work like this. if you want to make ugly and kitch type art then if anything you need to just embrace that harder and become more annoying about it, ala duchamp, right? but its a tightrope to walk when working with this kind of imgary. the concepts of what art works the art insitution (ie who makes the art history books) are fundamentally rooted in white supremacy. thats why, going back to my mentioning of the facistic nature of the anti modern art movement earlier, the fascist types are always like "why dont we make these epic statues anymore?" when you treat historcal artifacts and art as a simple aesthetic without researching them and underatanding their background, youre not able to really explore these concepts or add much commentrary. hence the "desktop wallpaper vibes". i think its not just a matter of getting offline its also a matter of understanding art history and forming an opinion on a subject rather than just using an iconic work or style as a subject with little thought beyond "i want to do what they say the so called masters did". thats what fundamentally i think would maybe distinguish his work beyond dentist waiting room poster. what about these works compell him to make art abt them for instance?

as an artist myself, the hate comments went way too far and many of them were clearly not made by experienced artists. i personally just find it bland. compositionally, it feels unbalanced and heavy on the right with too much emptiness on the left, and there is hardly any color. i feel like if he had gone monochrome with a specific color and experimented more, it would’ve been much better. but like, he’s 18. everyone starts somewhere. it isn’t even a bad painting. its just a normal realism study of a statue. if it was just for school, that would be one thing. i think most of the outrage came from the fact that he applied to a museum.

This is one of the most insane dogpilings I’ve ever seen in the art community (hyperbole). People calling this cringe are insane and are making perfectly harmless behaviors into something bad (as all cringe is), and the people calling it a cashgrab are also insane for being this horrifically harsh.
It’s most certainly not cringe and whether it’s a cashgrab or not does nothing for you. He didn’t burn down your crops, push over your cows or sleep with your wife-he’s done nothing but post his art in a format you don’t personally like.

the "tracing bad" argument is so stupid. it's such a 2016 deviantart/wattpad argument. tracing from good references can be good for budding artists to learn the basics of anatomy. except he didn't even trace another photo! HE TRACED HIS OWN FUCKING WORK!!!! IT'S STILL HIS!!! i'm so convinced the american school system has completely failed people in terms of art literacy. and his paintings aren't even bad! i, for one, think they're pretty alright, and i'm an artist myself!

I'm annoyed by the comments saying that he should focus on improving his art and not also document it. He's not even bad, his first painting was done very well (i.e. blending, shadows). Do people not want to see an artists grow; are they that impatient for "good" art? Also the non-artists getting mad at the tracing baffles me. You can literally see his sketch in procreate! Lastly, most of the "constructive criticism" shown in this video clearly isn't coming from artists or people who have the vocabulary to critique. All of this is so disheartening to see.

it seems like there's a recurring trend on the internet where any time an artist (especially a young artist) shows confidence in their work, they get absolutely dogpiled. there's a reason you see so many artists online captioning their work with self-deprecating descriptions even when the work is really good, and that reason is fear of receiving backlash for not being humble enough. it's kind of sad.

@@reckless_herb there’s nothing wrong with the subject; like you said it’s not suiting my taste for reasons of not being executed well technically and for me personally seeming to lack anything other
than surface level aesthetics. this is a very subjective opinion and doesn’t mean that there is anything ‘wrong’ about the artwork but for context my personal opinion stems and is in formed by 3 years of intense study of art and cultural practices. which to reiterate does not make my opinion any more or less valid - it just means for myself that i have changed some opinions and tastes i would have had when i was a teenager on tumblr if that makes sense

There is sooo much projection going on from ppl who think an 18 yr old should already have this art thing down pat and if not should shut himself away until he does. One thing I cannot stand about social media today is the idea that if you are going to even try for an audience you had better be pristine to start. Not like hey let’s watch this kid evolve and cheer him while he does,p. But no you take arty adult with varying degrees of success in their own professional lives and let them loose on the comment section to hurl every negative thing they had to endure coming up, rather than taking time to realize that approach doesn’t work.
I do agree about the branding taking over. But I don’t think it will be a detriment to his career when galleries, art crawls, etc don’t turn around n say oh no ur reach would be terrible for my business, sadly it’s a plus nowadays. So yeah put trad art first if that’s where you wanna go, never pretend like improvements mean you can stop learning or caring and in 5 yrs or maybe 10. We always got the 10k hr banked to get ur foot in the door.but ya give it time n it will work out if you put the work in.
All the negative nellies need to take a look at themselves and see if they weren’t just scolding themselves.

as someone who has spent years in traditional art, I think this guy is doing something interesting by marketing himself. being an artist doesn't automatically mean everything you make has to be super profound and meticulous! if this guy wants to build a brand out of himself to give himself better chances of making a living as an artist, then I would really love to see him succeed in that and for others to find similar success. it's so discouraging trying to make enough income as a traditional artist, which is why I abandoned it to become a software engineer instead. I wish I had known a marketing strategy like this was an option for me, and whether or not it could really work. I'm curious to see where he goes from here, and I appreciate what he's doing from a strategy perspective. everyone has different tastes when it comes to art so it's pretty unfair for random people to come in and tell him his style is bad and to give up, if they aren't colleagues who understand the direction he wants to go as an artist and can genuinely advise him, I dont think he should have to listen to their criticism. if he is posting these videos purely to bait people into looking at his art so that the few who do like it will find him and give him business, then I think thats very clever. he obviously wouldn't be taking people's criticisms on the internet too much to heart in that case, and his response of continuing to post and build his brand even in response to negative feedback makes total sense to me. it seems like he is just following through with exactly what he set out to do. if hes still just a high school student, im sure he has a community advising him and helping him develop his abilities Offline, and that is more than enough. he doesn't have to cater to the internet's opinions of how good his art is, he's just getting an early start in his artist career through a little marketing strategy.
