I will have to say myself being in traditional archery most of my life , you guys work is beautiful. It is an art . A deadly art.😉
Wow, thank you!
@@longbows actually the first mention of a bow being used military use was in 633 ad Anglo-Saxon war I believe killed the king
It's been at least 20 years since I last met you Richard - good to see you still crafting bows and in good health. Keep well keep safe.
Nice to hear from you, stay safe.
You guys no your stuff awesome bows
Thats very kind of you , sir.
Richard Head Longbows made the best looking medieval arrows in the net. IMHO 👍

Good timing as we are approaching the Agincourt anniversary in a few days hence.
Top job, cheers from the US
Thanks
Thank you
You're welcome
The English longbow is so fascinating that we forget that England lost the Hundred Years War.
The impact of the weapon on medieval society (both militarily and socially), is what makes it truly fascinating.
And that the bow is welsh
A Welsh bow is Welsh
@@mortenjacobsen5673 I'm not sure about that. In Somerset, England, they have found the remains of a couple of 2500 year old longbows in the marsh area on the Somerset flats...
Maybe they were exported to Wales, across the Bristol channel...?
@@mortenjacobsen5673 the staves were often imported from Italy apparently.
Always good to see another Richard Head Longbows video. Beautiful creations. And I recognise the composer of the intro music.
Thank you very much!

I guess you’re go to bow if you were going for a shoot be interested to see your set up . 👍
Vet nice.
Thanks
Sighs. Your display arrows are better than my actual arrows.
Sounds like awesome work.
Thanks
The winding of the yarn on the feathers seems extremely tight (only a few millimeters distance between each loop). Is this based on historical findings? If so, do you know why it was done this way and not like practical examples today with fewer loops/windings? The feather already stays attached nicely with only a few loops with a centimeter between each loop for example. It does look insanely cool in any case!
Hi, Thanks for watching and commenting. The binding, as it's called, is less tight than the examples that all `Medieval` arrows are now based on, that would be the finds from the Mary Rose, which, makes the examples people follow technically Tudor. You would have to ask the Tudor Fletchers of the time why they chose to bind so tightly together; I am sure from their 100s of years of experience they knew what they were doing.
You could avoid people trying to pull the arrows by having one in full display. Perhaps the mannikin could hold one in its hand.
People always want to see what they can't, no Matt how many we have fully on display, also, it's what the museum has ordered.
As a kid ..and perhaps even as an adult , I would have definitely attempted some arrow pilferage and liberation on seeing the bag of fine looking shafts destined never to experience the wind rushing over their fletchings 😂
Naughty
Interesting bit of trivia, they actually did not draw and knock from the back quiver, the back quiver was for holding more arrows to refill the sidequiver with when it went empty.
If you can prove me wrong I'd appreciate it, that way I'm not just typing my fingers off.
Well said
The arrow bag interests me ... do you have a link to an article (video) with more details ??
Yes indeed... ua-cam.com/video/JVnib1TsPBY/v-deo.html
Lovely work guys,as usual. While im here any news on the arrow found i the barn?
Thanks, no, we had a lab lined up, but as you can probably guess, that has had to be put on hold.
Great video, as always. Interesting comment about the side nocks; I’ve noticed that a side nock fits well with a bowyer’s knot where there is more string (coiled) on one side. What do you think? Perhaps this was the rationale at the time. Great fletching and binding on the arrows by the way.
Thanks for the kind words. The side nock is on the top nock, not the end with the bowyers knot.
How do you keep a manequin around without shooting an Apple of its head...

I dont know, How do you keep a manequin around without shooting an Apple of its head...

@@longbows never have Apples
What was the go to reference for longbows etc before the “Mary rose” finding cool video thanks Liam
Well, for all our lifetimes, they have been the only ones, the Deane brothers brought up bows from the wreck in the 1800s, so beyond then it's hard to say.
Richard Head Longbows thank you for the reply appreciate it
3:45 That bowyer's knot looks like a timber hitch.
That's because it is.
My guess is they put the strung bow on a tillering stick and heated it up until there was just no tension left. I never thought of doing that for display before.
Am I right guys?
No, good try, have another guess.
@@longbows Similar guess to TFf; did you steam treat the bow on a jig to shape it, then apply the string?
@@mikegregory2492 That's what I would think.
Or take a freezing machine to a medieval longbow re enactment event & zap an archer at full draw!
No
Do I just Include a mailing address or how do i receive this? Lol

Do you reckon you could shoot an apple from atop Donald Trump’s head with such a bow?
